Real-Time and Rapid Respiratory Response of the Soil Microbiome to Moisture Shifts

Microbial response to changing environmental factors influences the fate of soil organic carbon, and drought has been shown to affect microbial metabolism and respiration. We hypothesized that the access of microbes to different carbon pools in response to dry–rewet events occurs sequentially at different rates. We amended desiccated soils with 13 C-labeled glucose and measured the rates of 12 CO 2 and 13 CO 2 respiration in real time after rewetting. Using these differentiated 12 CO 2 and 13 CO 2 respiration rate soils after rewetting, we were able to deduce when microbes are accessing different pools of carbon. Immediately upon rewetting, respiration of 12 CO 2 occurred first, with negligible 13 CO 2 respiration. Appreciable metabolism and respiration of the added 13 C glucose did not occur until 15 min after rewetting. We conclude that, while all carbon pools are being accessed in the first 9 h after rewetting, the rate and timing at which new and existing carbon pools are being accessed varies. Within this study, using stable isotope-labeled substrates to discern which carbon pools are metabolized first uniquely illustrates how microorganisms access different carbon pools which has implications into understanding how carbon metabolism can further affect climate, carbon sequestration, and soil health.

Are Methanol-Derived Foliar Methyl Acetate Emissions a Tracer of Acetate-Mediated Drought Survival in Plants?

Upregulation of acetate fermentation in plants has recently been described as an evolutionarily conserved drought survival strategy, with the amount of acetate produced directly correlating to survival. However, destructive measurements are required to evaluate acetate-linked drought responses, limiting the temporal and spatial scales that can be studied. Here, 13C-labeling studies with poplar (Populus trichocarpa) branches confirmed that methyl acetate is produced in plants from the acetate-linked acetylation of methanol. Methyl acetate emissions from detached leaves were strongly stimulated during desiccation, with total emissions decreasing with the leaf developmental stage. In addition, diurnal methyl acetate emissions from whole physiologically active poplar branches increased as a function of temperature, and light-dark transitions resulted in significant emission bursts lasting several hours. During experimental drought treatments of potted poplar saplings, light-dark methyl acetate emission bursts were eliminated while strong enhancements in methyl acetate emissions lasting > 6 days were observed with their initiation coinciding with the suppression of transpiration and photosynthesis. The results suggest that methyl acetate emissions represent a novel non-invasive tracer of acetate-mediated temperature and drought survival response in plants. The findings may have important implications for the future understanding of acetate-mediated drought responses to transcription, cellular metabolism, and hormone signaling, as well as its associated changes in carbon cycling and water use from individual plants to whole ecosystems.

The First Habitable-zone Earth-sized Planet from TESS. III. Climate States and Characterization Prospects for TOI-700 d

We present self-consistent three-dimensional climate simulations of possible habitable states for the newly discovered habitable-zone Earth-sized planet TOI-700 d. We explore a variety of atmospheric compositions, pressures, and rotation states for both ocean-covered and completely desiccated planets in order to assess the planet’s potential for habitability. For all 20 of our simulated cases, we use our climate model outputs to synthesize transmission spectra, combined-light spectra, and integrated broadband phase curves. These climatologically informed observables will help the community assess the technological capabilities necessary for future characterization of this planet—as well as similar transiting planets discovered in the future—and will provide a guide for distinguishing possible climate states if one day we do obtain sensitive spectral observations of a habitable planet around an M star. We find that TOI-700 d is a strong candidate for a habitable world and can potentially maintain temperate surface conditions under a wide variety of atmospheric compositions. Unfortunately, the spectral feature depths from the resulting transmission spectra and the peak flux and variations from our synthesized phase curves for TOI-700 d do not exceed 10 ppm. This will likely prohibit the James Webb Space Telescope from characterizing its atmosphere; however, this motivates the community to invest in future instrumentation that perhaps can one day reveal the true nature of TOI-700 d and to continue to search for similar planets around less distant stars.

L 98-59: A Benchmark System of Small Planets for Future Atmospheric Characterization

The M3V dwarf star L 98-59 hosts three small (R < 1.6 R {sub ⊕}) planets. The host star is bright (K = 7.1) and nearby (10.6 pc), making the system a prime target for follow-up characterization with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Herein, we use simulated transmission spectroscopy to evaluate the detectability of spectral features with HST and JWST assuming diverse atmospheric scenarios (e.g., atmospheres dominated by H{sub 2}, H{sub 2}O, CO{sub 2}, or O{sub 2}). We find that H{sub 2}O and CH{sub 4} present in a low mean molecular weight atmosphere could be detected with HST in one transit for the two outermost planets, while H{sub 2}O in a clear steam atmosphere could be detected in six transits or fewer with HST for all three planets. We predict that observations using JWST/NIRISS would be capable of detecting a clear steam atmosphere in one transit for each planet and H{sub 2}O absorption in a hazy steam atmosphere in two transits or less. In a clear, desiccated atmosphere, O{sub 2} absorption may be detectable for all three planets with NIRISS. If the L 98-59 planets possess a clear, Venus-like atmosphere, NIRSpec could detect CO{sub 2} within 26 transits for each planet, but the presence of H{sub 2}SO{sub 4} clouds would significantly suppress CO{sub 2} absorption. The L 98-59 system is an excellent laboratory for comparative planetary studies of transiting multiplanet systems, and observations of the system via HST and JWST would present a unique opportunity to test the accuracy of the models presented in this study.

Reduced Late Bombardment on Rocky Exoplanets around M Dwarfs

Ocean-vaporizing impacts of chemically reduced planetesimals onto the early Earth have been suggested to catalyze atmospheric production of reduced nitrogen compounds and trigger prebiotic synthesis despite an oxidized lithosphere. While geochemical evidence supports a dry, highly reduced late veneer on Earth, the composition of late-impacting debris around lower-mass stars is subject to variable volatile loss as a result of their hosts' extended pre-main-sequence phase. We perform simulations of late-stage planet formation across the M-dwarf mass spectrum to derive upper limits on reducing bombardment epochs in Hadean-analog environments. We contrast the solar system scenario with varying initial volatile distributions due to extended primordial runaway greenhouse phases on protoplanets and the desiccation of smaller planetesimals by internal radiogenic heating. We find a decreasing rate of late-accreting reducing impacts with decreasing stellar mass. Young planets around stars ≤0.4 M ⊙ experience no impacts of sufficient mass to generate prebiotically relevant concentrations of reduced atmospheric compounds once their stars have reached the main sequence. For M-dwarf planets to not exceed Earth-like concentrations of volatiles, both planetesimals, and larger protoplanets must undergo extensive devolatilization processes and can typically emerge from long-lived magma ocean phases with sufficient atmophile content to outgas secondary atmospheres. Our results suggest that transiently reducing surface conditions on young rocky exoplanets are favored around FGK stellar types relative to M dwarfs.

Inclusion of a cold hardening scheme to represent frost tolerance is essential to model realistic plant hydraulics in the Arctic–boreal zone in CLM5.0-FATES-Hydro

As temperatures decrease in autumn, vegetation of temperate and boreal ecosystems increases its tolerance to freezing. This process, known as hardening, results in a set of physiological changes at the molecular level that initiate modifications of cell membrane composition and the synthesis of anti-freeze proteins. Together with the freezing of extracellular water, anti-freeze proteins reduce plant water potentials and xylem conductivity. To represent the responses of vegetation to climate change, land surface schemes increasingly employ “hydrodynamic” models that represent the explicit fluxes of water from soil and through plants. The functioning of such schemes under frozen soil conditions, however, is poorly understood. Nonetheless, hydraulic processes are of major importance in the dynamics of these systems, which can suffer from, e.g., winter “frost drought” events. In this study, we implement a scheme that represents hardening into CLM5.0-FATES-Hydro. FATES-Hydro is a plant hydrodynamics module in FATES, a cohort model of vegetation physiology, growth, and dynamics hosted in CLM5.0. We find that, in frozen systems, it is necessary to introduce reductions in plant water loss associated with hardening to prevent winter desiccation. This work makes it possible to use CLM5.0-FATES-Hydro to model realistic impacts from frost droughts on vegetation growth and photosynthesis, leading to more reliable projections of how northern ecosystems respond to climate change.

An advanced membrane-based HMX model and its application in utilizing sensible and latent heat removed in space cooling

This paper presents a comprehensive simulation model for advanced membrane-based heat and mass exchanger (HMX) components which account for three separate fluid streams with complex flow patterns. The model was implemented with various liquid desiccants and their properties (including LiCl, CaCl and ionic liquid (IL)). Preliminary model validation is presented using data from a laboratory prototype absorber. The paper also presents implementation of the model into a sorption system modeling platform and analyzes potential benefit analysis of the HMX component in utilizing the sensible and latent heat removed in space cooling to heat water. The developed model and codes are expected to enable detailed optimization studies and identify novel configurations for the three-fluid HMX maximum performance and cost effectiveness.

Heat dissipation systems with hygroscopic working fluid

A heat dissipation system apparatus and method of operation using hygroscopic working fluid for use in a wide variety of environments for absorbed water in the hygroscopic working fluid to be released to minimize water consumption in the heat dissipation system apparatus for effective cooling in environments having little available water for use in cooling systems. The system comprises a low-volatility, hygroscopic working fluid to reject thermal energy directly to ambient air. The low-volatility and hygroscopic nature of the working fluid prevents complete evaporation of the fluid and a net consumption of water for cooling, and direct-contact heat exchange allows for the creation of large interfacial surface areas for effective heat transfer. Specific methods of operation prevent the crystallization of the desiccant from the hygrosopic working fluid under various environmental conditions.

Method and system for dehumidification and atmospheric water extraction with minimal energy consumption

Methods, systems and devices for managing humidity within an HVAC system including a nanostructured desiccant porous material configured to adsorb water from an inlet stream at a first air pressure and to release water from that material when subjected to a second air pressure when the second air pressure is lower than the first air pressure is located within a particular location so as to allow for the passage of wet air over the materials and allow adsorption of the water on to the material. When coupled with a vacuum pump water can be collected and released from the materials and the system, regenerating the material for future use and removing water from a stream at a significantly lower cost than existing processes.

Influence of the Anions on the Interaction Energy between Water and Ionic Liquids

It is essential to understand the interaction energy between water and ionic liquids (ILs) in search of ILs for dehumidification applications. In this paper, the intermolecular interaction energy between water and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ([EMIM])-based ILs was investigated. The vapor-liquid equilibrium data were first measured for solutions of [EMIM][BF 4 ], [EMIM][N(CN) 2 ], [EMIM][CF 3 SO 3 ], and [EMIM][CH 3 SO 3 ] with water molar fractions of 8–95 % at temperatures of 303–343 K. The IL-IL and water-IL intermolecular interaction energies were determined by using the correlated non-random two-liquid model. The results revealed that fluorine atoms in anions reduce the attraction energy between IL and water, and thus, decrease the water affinity.

Separate sensible and latent cooling: Carnot limits and system taxonomy

Energy efficiency and thermal comfort can be improved by independent control of temperature and humidity. In recent work, an emerging class of cooling systems known as separate sensible and latent cooling (SSLC) systems have demonstrated 14 to 47% energy savings, while simultaneously providing better comfort control than conventional air conditioning. In this work, SSLC is defined as using two or more cooling processes with unequal sensible heat ratio (SHR) to control temperature and humidity independently and dynamically. Fundamental efficiency limits of SSLC systems are developed for the first time, demonstrating that the Carnot efficiency for SSLC is higher than that of conventional systems. It is revealed that SSLC has particularly high potential for moderate outdoor temperatures, high sensible building loads, and drier indoor conditions. Additionally, this work proposes a classification scheme for SSLC systems, revealing an enormous number of feasible cycle permutations. This provides a framework for the important research task of developing SSLC systems that will save energy, be practical to construct, and be controllable.
