Inclusive quarkonium production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV

This article reports on the inclusive production cross section of several quarkonium states, J/ψ, ψ(2S), $\mathcal{Υ}$(1S), $\mathcal{Υ}$(2S), and $\mathcal{Υ}$(3S), measured with the ALICE detector at the LHC, in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=5.02 TeV. The analysis is performed in the dimuon decay channel at forward rapidity ( 2.5 < y < 4). The integrated cross sections and transverse-momentum (p T ) and rapidity (y) differential cross sections for J/ψ, ψ(2S), $\mathcal{Υ}$(1S), and the ψ(2S) -to-J/ψ cross section ratios are presented. The integrated cross sections, assuming unpolarized quarkonia, are: σ J/ψ (p T <20 GeV/c) = 5.88 ± 0.03 ± 0.34 μb, σ ψ(2S) (p T <12 GeV/c) = 0.87 ± 0.06 ± 0.10 μb, σ Υ(1S) (p T <15 GeV/c) = 45.5 ± 3.9 ± 3.5 nb, σ Υ(2S) (p T <15 GeV/c) = 22.4 ± 3.2 ± 2.7 nb, and σ Υ(3S) (p T <15 GeV/c) = 4.9 ± 2.2 ± 1.0 nb, where the first (second) uncertainty is the statistical (systematic) one. For the first time, the cross sections of the three $\mathcal{Υ}$ states, as well as the ψ(2S) one as a function of p T and y , are measured at $\sqrt{s}$=5.02 TeV at forward rapidity. These measurements also significantly extend the J/ψ p T reach and supersede previously published results. A comparison with ALICE measurements in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=2.76, 7, 8, and 13 TeV is presented and the energy dependence of quarkonium production cross sections is discussed. Finally, the results are compared with the predictions from several production models.

Measurement of the inclusive and differential WZ production cross sections, polarization angles, and triple gauge couplings in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The associated production of a W and a Z boson is studied in final states with multiple leptons produced in proton-proton (pp) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using 137 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. A measurement of the total inclusive production cross section yields σ$_{tot}$(pp → WZ) = 50.6 ± 0.8 (stat) ± 1.5 (syst) ± 1.1 (lumi) ± 0.5 (theo) pb. Measurements of the fiducial and differential cross sections for several key observables are also performed in all the final-state lepton flavour and charge compositions with a total of three charged leptons, which can be electrons or muons. All results are compared with theoretical predictions computed up to next-to-next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics plus next-to-leading or- der in electroweak theory and for various sets of parton distribution functions. The results include direct measurements of the charge asymmetry and the W and Z vector boson polarization. The first observation of longitudinally polarized W bosons in WZ production is reported. Anomalous gauge couplings are searched for, leading to new constraints on beyond-the-standard-model contributions to the WZ triple gauge coupling.

Measurements of the Higgs boson inclusive and differential fiducial cross-sections in the diphoton decay channel with pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of inclusive and differential fiducial cross-sections for the production of the Higgs boson decaying into two photons is performed using 139 fb –1 of proton-proton collision data recorded at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The inclusive cross-section times branching ratio, in a fiducial region closely matching the experimental selection, is measured to be 67 ± 6 fb, which is in agreement with the state-of-the-art Standard Model prediction of 64 ± 4 fb. Extrapolating this result to the full phase space and correcting for the branching ratio, the total cross-section for Higgs boson production is estimated to be 58 ± 6 pb. In addition, the cross-sections in four fiducial regions sensitive to various Higgs boson production modes and differential cross-sections as a function of either one or two of several observables are measured. All the measurements are found to be in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. The measured transverse momentum distribution of the Higgs boson is used as an indirect probe of the Yukawa coupling of the Higgs boson to the bottom and charm quarks. In addition, five differential cross-section measurements are used to constrain anomalous Higgs boson couplings to vector bosons in the Standard Model effective field theory framework.

Which nuclear data can be validated with LLNL pulsed-sphere experiments?

It is shown here that 14-MeV D+T LLNL pulsed-sphere experiments bring complementary information into the process of validating nuclear data compared to experiments that are traditionally used for this purpose—such as critical assemblies. To be more specific, the 14-MeV D+T LLNL pulsed-sphere neutron-leakage spectra enable to validate scattering and fission nuclear data up to 15 MeV (compared to approximately up to 5 MeV when using criticality experiments) and employ to this end simple compound targets containing only few isotopes. In this work, sensitivity profiles of the spectra to nuclear data are calculated in order to understand in detail which isotopes, observables, and energy ranges of nuclear data contribute significantly to their simulation. These profiles are presented for a few selected spheres containing 16 O, 12 C, 56 Fe, and 239 Pu. It is shown that the neutron-leakage spectra of spheres containing light elements are mostly sensitive to elastic- and inelastic-scattering cross sections on discrete levels and corresponding angular distributions. Spheres of structural materials are sensitive to elastic- and inelastic-scattering cross sections, including scattering on discrete levels and the continuum, and double-differential cross sections. Actinide spheres are also strongly sensitive to the fission observables, in particular to the total-fission neutron spectrum. Thin spheres (in which neutrons experience on average less than one scatter) are mostly sensitive to data near the elastic peak, in the energy range from 12–15 MeV, while thicker ones can be sensitive to data at lower incident-neutron energies due to multiple-scattering effects. This information is brought together with simulations of 71 pulsed-sphere neutron-leakage spectra using the ENDF/B-VII.1 and ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear-data libraries. This analysis highlights ENDF/B-VIII.0 data that could be further investigated for potential shortcomings ( 6 Li, 12 C, 16 O, 24-26 Mg, 27 Al, 48 Ti, 56 Fe, and 208 Pb) or are likely reliable ( 1,2 H, 7 Li, 9 Be, 14 N, 235,238 U, and 239 Pu) as indicated by validating with LLNL pulsed-sphere experiments.

Measurement and QCD analysis of double-differential inclusive jet cross sections in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A measurement of the inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV is presented. The double-differential cross sections are measured as a function of the jet transverse momentum p$_{T}$ and the absolute jet rapidity |y|. The anti-k$_{T}$ clustering algorithm is used with distance parameter of 0.4 (0.7) in a phase space region with jet p$_{T}$ from 97 GeV up to 3.1 TeV and |y| < 2.0. Data collected with the CMS detector are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb$^{-1}$ (33.5 fb$^{-1}$). The measurement is used in a comprehensive QCD analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order, which results in significant improvement in the accuracy of the parton distributions in the proton. Simultaneously, the value of the strong coupling constant at the Z boson mass is extracted as α$_{S}$(m$_{Z}$) = 0.1170±0.0019. For the first time, these data are used in a standard model effective field theory analysis at next-to-leading order, where parton distributions and the QCD parameters are extracted simultaneously with imposed constraints on the Wilson coefficient c$_{1}$ of 4-quark contact interactions.

Muon Neutrino Charged Current Single Pion Production on Various Targets in the MINERvA Detector

Measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters at accelerator-based experiments require precise knowledge of neutrino interaction cross sections. A significant fraction of neutrino interactions observed in these experiments produce single charged pions. While single charged pion production has been measured on hydrocarbon and water, few precise measurements exist for heavier targets, and there are no high statistics measurements that directly compare pion production on different targets. This thesis measures differential cross sections of muon neutrino charged current single charged pion production with no other mesons in the final state in a neutrino beam with a mean energy of $\approx 6$ GeV. The pion production is studied on targets of scintillator, carbon, water, iron, and lead at MINERvA, a neutrino cross section experiment located in the NuMI beamline at Fermilab. These measured cross sections are differential in $\mu^-$ and $\pi^+$ kinematics. A strong suppression of low $Q^2 $ and an enhancement of low $T_\pi$ are observed relative to commonly used neutrino interaction models in both the light and heavy nuclear targets. Incorporation of these observed effects in future neutrino oscillation experiments will improve their ability to measure energy of neutrino interactions, and therefore measure the parameters governing neutrino oscillations.

Measurement of the production cross section of prompt $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $ baryons at midrapidity in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 5.02 TeV

The transverse momentum (p T ) differential cross section of the charm-strange baryon $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $ is measured at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) via its semileptonic decay into e + Ξ - ν e in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The ratio of the p T -differential $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $-baryon and D 0 -meson production cross sections is also reported. The measurements are compared with simulations with different tunes of the PYTHIA 8 event generator, with predictions from a statistical hadronisation model (SHM) with a largely augmented set of charm-baryon states beyond the current lists of the Particle Data Group, and with models including hadronisation via quark coalescence. The p T -integrated cross section of prompt $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $-baryon production at midrapidity is also reported, which is used to calculate the baryon-to-meson ratio $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $/D 0 = 0.20 ± 0.04 (stat.)$^{+0.08}_{-0.07}$ (syst.). These results provide an additional indication of a modification of the charm fragmentation from e + e - and e - p collisions to pp collisions.

Precise measurement of the tt¯ production cross-section and lepton differential distributions in eμ dilepton events from s=13TeVpp collisions with the ATLAS detector

The inclusive top quark pair (tt¯$$t\bar{t}$$) cross-section σtt¯$$\sigma _{t\bar{t}}$$ has been measured in proton–proton collisions at s=13TeV$$\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {TeV}$$, using 140fb-1$$140\,{\text {fb}^{-1}} $$ of data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Using events with an opposite-charge eμ$$e\mu $$ pair and b-tagged jets, the cross-section is measured to be: σtt¯=829.3±1.3(stat)±8.0(syst)±7.3(lumi)±1.9(beam)pb,$$\begin{aligned} \sigma _{t\bar{t}} & = 829.3\pm 1.3\,\mathrm {(stat)}\ \pm 8.0\,\mathrm {(syst)}\ \pm 7.3\,\mathrm {(lumi)}\ \\ & \quad \pm 1.9\,\mathrm {(beam)}\,\textrm{pb}, \end{aligned}$$where the uncertainties reflect the limited size of the data sample, experimental and theoretical systematic effects, the integrated luminosity, and the proton beam energy, giving a total uncertainty of 1.3%. The result is used to determine the top quark pole mass via the dependence of the predicted cross-section on mtpole$${m_{t}^\textrm{pole}}$$, giving mtpole=172.8-1.7+1.5$${m_{t}^\textrm{pole}}=172.8^{+1.5}_{-1.7}$$ GeV$$\text {GeV}$$. The same event sample is used to measure absolute and normalised differential cross-sections for the tt¯→eμνν¯bb¯$$t\bar{t} \rightarrow e\mu u \bar{ u }b\bar{b} $$ process as a function of single-lepton and dilepton kinematic variables. Complementary measurements of eμbb¯$$e\mu b\bar{b} $$ production, treating both tt¯$$t\bar{t}$$ and Wt events as signal, are also provided. Both sets of differential cross-sections are compared to the predictions of various Monte Carlo event generators, demonstrating that the state-of-the-art generators Powheg MiNNLO and Powhegbb4l describe the data better than Powheghvq.

Measurement of the Higgs boson production in association with top quarks in multilepton final states in pp collisions at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of the associated production of a top-quark pair with the Higgs boson (tt¯H$$ t\overline{t}H $$) in multilepton final states is presented. The analysis is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at s=13$$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. Six final states defined by the number and flavour of reconstructed charged leptons are combined in a simultaneous likelihood fit to extract the tt¯H$$ t\overline{t}H $$ signal and constrain the most relevant backgrounds. The measured tt¯H$$ t\overline{t}H $$ cross-section normalised to Standard Model (SM) prediction is σtt¯H/σSM=0.63−0.19+0.20$$ {\sigma}_{t\overline{t}H}/{\sigma}^{\mathrm{SM}}=0.{63}_{-0.19}^{+0.20} $$. This result corresponds to an observed (expected) significance of 3.3σ (5.3σ). Additionally, two other fits are used to measure the tt¯H$$ t\overline{t}H $$ cross-section differentially in bins of the Higgs boson transverse momentum in the simplified template cross-section framework, and to extract the associated production cross-section of a single top-quark with the Higgs boson (tH) together with the tt¯H$$ t\overline{t}H $$ one. The CP structure of the top quark-Higgs boson Yukawa coupling is probed through an analysis of tt¯H$$ t\overline{t}H $$ and tH events. The results are compatible with the SM hypothesis, and values of the mixing angle between CP-even and CP-odd top-Higgs Yukawa couplings of |α| > 62° are excluded at 68% confidence level.

Electron emission from bromouracil and uracil induced by protons and radiosensitization

Absolute double differential cross sections (DDCS) of electrons emitted from uracil and 5-bromouracil (BrU) in collisions with protons of energy 200 keV have been measured for various forward and backward emission angles over wide range of electron energies. The measured DDCS are compared with the continuum distorted wave-eikonal initial state (CDW-EIS) calculations. The optimized structure of the BrU was estimated along with the population analysis of all the occupied orbitals using a self-consistent field density. A comparison between the measured DDCS data for the two molecules show that the cross section of low energy electrons emitted from BrU is substantially larger than that for uracil. The BrU-to-uracil DDCS ratios obtained from the present measurements indicate an enhancement of the electron emission by a factor which is as large as 2.0 to 2.5. These electrons being the major agent for damaging the DNA/RNA of the malignant tissues, the present results are expected to provide an important input for the radiosensitization effect in hadron therapy. It is noteworthy to mention that the CDW-EIS calculations for Coulomb ionization cannot predict such enhancement. A large angular asymmetry is observed for uracil with a broad structure, which is absent in case of BrU.

Cross section of neutrons from the H 2 ( n , 2 n ) reaction at E n = 15 MeV

In this work, the double-differential cross section of the deuteron breakup reaction 2 H(n, 2n) has been studied experimentally with a neutron beam energy of 15 MeV. Special attention has been devoted to estimation of background condition and multiple scattering effect in the scattering sample. Experimental data have been compared with models based on phase-space approximation used in the ENDF/B-VIII.0 data library and in the MCNP neutron transport code, as well as with rigorous model based on Faddeev equations used for cross section evaluations in JENDL data library. It was found that experimental data are better reproduced by Faddeev model, however, the model overestimates data in the low-energy region of the neutron spectrum (<4 MeV)

Electron emission from fluorene (C 13 H 10 ) upon 3.5 MeV/u Si 8+ ion impact: double differential distributions

In this work, we have studied the electron emission from one of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules namely, fluorene (C13H10), upon 3.5 MeV/u Si8+ ion impact. The experimentally measured absolute double differential cross sections (DDCS) are compared with the continuum distorted wave-eikonal initial state (CDW-EIS) model and the first Born approximation including correct boundary conditions (CB1). The measurements are carried out in the ejected e⁻-energy range of 1 eV–400 eV and in the angular range of 20°–160°. We have obtained the single differential and the total cross sections (TCSs) of e⁻-emission as well. The CB1 calculation largely underestimates the data. The CDW-EIS model, which is applied for the PAH molecule for the first time, provides an overall better agreement with the double differential, single differential and TCS data. The DDCS data for fluorene has also been compared with that for CH4 molecule, at a few angles. The forward–backward angular asymmetry shows a relatively flatter distribution compared to the theoretical predictions. The contribution due to the giant plasmon resonance could not be clearly observed except a mild indication in the asymmetry parameter. The angular distribution of the carbon KLL Auger electron cross section shows certain variations. The study of the KLL hyper-satellite component indicates the double K-ionization cross section is about 8.6% of the single K-ionization one.

Photoproduction of pion pairs at high energy and small angles

Here, we explore the photoproduction mechanisms for charged and neutral pion pairs off a heavy nucleus at threshold. We calculate the production of charged pairs in the Coulomb field of the nucleus in the Born approximation using explicit expressions for the differential cross sections and their connection with the total cross section σ(γγ→π + π - ). The production of σ mesons at threshold and their subsequent decay into pions is an important mechanism and is investigated quantitatively in a framework that can be used for both charged and neutral pions. σ mesons can be produced via electromagnetic (photon exchange) or strong (ω exchange) interactions. For neutral pions, another production mechanism consists of the two-step process where charged pions are produced first and then charge exchange into two neutral pions. Differential and total cross sections are computed for each production mechanism.

Measurement of the Higgs boson inclusive and differential fiducial production cross sections in the diphoton decay channel with pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The inclusive fiducial cross section is measured to be σ fid = 73.4$^{+5.4}_{-5.3}$ (stat)$a^{+2.4}_{-2.2 }$(syst) fb, in agreement with the standard model expectation of 75.4 ± 4.1 fb. The measurements are also performed in fiducial regions targeting different production modes and as function of several observables describing the diphoton system, the number of additional jets present in the event, and other kinematic observables. Two double differential measurements are performed. No significant deviations from the standard model expectations are observed.

J/Psi Photoproduction Near Threshold With CLAS12

The structure of the proton is comprised of quarks and a sea of gluons. A mechanism that can extract the characteristics of the hidden-color correlations of the nuclear wavefunction is the production of charm near threshold. Due to the fact that momentum transfer is large near threshold in the production of J/ψ , all three valence quarks must act coherently to ex- change energy for the reaction to occur. Models have been developed to predict the nature of J/ψ photoproduction at these specific energies. These include production mechanisms with the two-gluon and three-gluon exchanges. The transferred momentum dependence of the differential cross sections are sensitive to the gluonic form factors, which describe the distribution of color charge in the proton. The CLAS12 detector is capable of measuring J/ψ photoproduction at the energy range close to the threshold. Work showcased in this dissertation encompasses the preparation of the CLAS12 experiments, including the optimization of tracking reconstruction through the study of the Torus magnetic field. In terms of software, contributions were made to the CLAS12 Event Builder, a key stage of reconstruction where event-by-event information is summarized for efficient data analysis. After the run periods were successfully completed, analysis of the RG-A data commenced and an analysis framework was developed to measure the differential and total cross sections of J/ψ photoproduction in Hall B.

Measurement of simplified template cross sections of the Higgs boson produced in association with W or Z bosons in the H → b b ¯ decay channel in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

Differential cross sections are measured for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with vector bosons (W, Z) and decaying to a pair of b quarks. Measurements are performed within the framework of the simplified template cross sections. The analysis relies on the leptonic decays of the W and Z bosons, resulting in final states with 0, 1, or 2 electrons or muons. The Higgs boson candidates are either reconstructed from pairs of resolved b-tagged jets, or from single large-radius jets containing the particles arising from two b quarks. Proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment in 2016–2018 and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 , are analyzed. The inclusive signal strength, defined as the product of the observed production cross section and branching fraction relative to the standard model expectation, combining all analysis categories, is found to be μ = $1.15^{+0.22}_{-0.20}$. This corresponds to an observed (expected) significance of 6.3 (5.6) standard deviations.

Designing observables for measurements with deep learning

Many analyses in particle and nuclear physics use simulations to infer fundamental, effective, or phenomenological parameters of the underlying physics models. When the inference is performed with unfolded cross sections, the observables are designed using physics intuition and heuristics. We propose to design targeted observables with machine learning. Unfolded, differential cross sections in a neural network output contain the most information about parameters of interest and can be well-measured by construction. The networks are trained using a custom loss function that rewards outputs that are sensitive to the parameter(s) of interest while simultaneously penalizing outputs that are different between particle-level and detector-level (to minimize detector distortions). We demonstrate this idea in simulation using two physics models for inclusive measurements in deep inelastic scattering. We find that the new approach is more sensitive than classical observables at distinguishing the two models and also has a reduced unfolding uncertainty due to the reduced detector distortions.
