Low-Cost, Easy-To-Integrate and Reliable Grid Energy Storage System with 2 nd Life Lithium Batteries

Batteries retired from electric vehicles have the potential to extend their service as low-cost stationary energy storage systems. However, disperse battery state of health (SOH) and nonuniform battery characters often lead to compromised battery performance and reliability, which greatly hinder their adoption. A Heterogenous Unifying Battery (HUB) system is proposed to stage 2 nd life battery bricks for a period, and enable them to attain improved SOH uniformity, performance, and reliability before being sold for 2 nd life applications, while simultaneously providing grid services. It may offer a technically and economically advantageous solution for the broad utilization of 2 nd use batteries. The goal of this project was to develop the hardware and software that enables the key functions of the HUB system. The first achievement of the project was the development of a 1kW scale proof-of-concept (POC) system, which comprises (i) a modular plug-n-play DC-DC power converter matrix with isolated series output connections to achieve fully independent control of energy flow to each of the connected battery units at low voltage; (ii) enhanced model based control that drives each batteries’ SOH towards uniformity while collectively providing grid energy storage services; and (iii) comprehensive procedures to perform battery diagnostics and prognostics. The second achievement was the development of a 100kW scale HUB system and demonstrated its performance of re-establishing battery SOH uniformity through a period of battery cycling operation. The final HUB system incorporates six DC-DC power converter matrices paired with six battery bricks. Hot swapping of a single battery brick while maintaining consistent system power was demonstrated and system operation was validated to be capable of implementing the approved grid duty cycle and of balancing and conditioning the battery bricks. Through the course of the project, the team optimized the building-block design, form-factors, and adjusted life balancing control. An up-sized 250kW Scale was developed and deployed in October 2022 with pack-level battery form factors, see photo in Figure 1 The third achievement of the project was to perform a techno-economic analysis in order to better understand the cost and revenue potentials in this new “recondition-then-resell" value proposition. The final TEA quantified the economics of new Li-ion batteries as well as second-life batteries processed via reconditioning and traditional binning. Results showed the reconditioned second-life batteries in this project to be economically favorable and viable in grid energy storage markets. The TEA results were published in the Applied Energy journal. The fourth achievement of the project was to deliver a tech-to-market plan for the HUB system that includes funding, IP, and manufacturing strategies. The final T2M plan outlines a business strategy in which the HUB provides a B2B service to EV companies as an alternative to battery recycling that can prepare batteries for 2nd life applications. A company named Smartville Inc. was founded to carry on the commercialization, funding, and technical IP licensing activities of the OPEN project.

Inertial effects in the dc+ac driven underdamped Frenkel-Kontorova model: Subharmonic steps, chaos, and hysteresis

The effects of inertial terms on the dynamics of the dc+ac driven Frenkel-Kontorova model were examined. As the mass of particles was varied, the response of the system to the driving forces and appearance of the Shapiro steps were analyzed in detail. Unlike in the overdamped case, the increase of mass led to the appearance of the whole series of subharmonic steps in the staircase of the average velocity as a function of average driving force in any commensurate structure. At certain values of parameters, the subharmonic steps became separated by chaotic windows while the whole structure retained scaling similar to the original staircase. The mass of the particles also determined their sensitivity to the forces governing their dynamics. Depending on their mass, they were found to exhibit three types of dynamics, from dynamical mode-locking with chaotic windows, through to a typical dc response, to essentially a free-particle response. Examination of this dynamics in both the upforce and downforce directions showed that the system may not only exhibit hysteresis, but also that large Shapiro steps may appear in the downforce direction, even in cases for which no dynamical mode-locking occurred in the upforce direction. © 2019 American Physical Society.

Analysis of MTDC Inertia Emulation Impact on Connected AC Systems

The frequency decoupling effect of the voltage source converter (VSC)-based high voltage dc (HVDC) transmission makes frequency support unavailable between two ac subsystems interconnected by the HVDC link. Recently, several algorithms have been proposed and demonstrated to improve the ac system stability by implementing inertia emulation (IE) functions in the HVDC VSC stations. However, the capability of the VSC-HVDC to achieve the IE control is not clear. According to the previous research, the IE control strategy has been studied without concerning the impact of the practical control process, which will introduce some time delay into the IE realization. In this paper, a detailed multi-terminal HVDC VSC control module, including the phase-locked loop (PLL) and low pass filter (LPF), is considered in order to analyze the multi-terminal HVDC network impact on the IE performance. The analysis indicates that the frequency performance of the ac network with IE integrated HVDC transmission can be nearly as good as that directly connected with the ac subsystem which involves a high penetration of conventional generation units, except for the short time delay introduced by the VSC control modules. The effectiveness of IE performance will be compromised if the response delay is significant. The simulation results have verified the analysis.

Quantifying Intrinsic, Extrinsic, Dielectric, and Secondary Pyroelectric Responses in PbZr 1–x Ti x O 3 Thin Films

Applications such as solid-state waste-heat energy conversion, infrared sensing, and thermally-driven electron emission rely on pyroelectric materials (a subclass of dielectric piezoelectrics) which exhibit temperature-dependent changes in polarization. Although enhanced dielectric and piezoelectric responses are typically found at polarization instabilities such as temperature- and chemically induced phase boundaries, large pyroelectric effects have been primarily limited in study to temperature-induced phase boundaries. Here in this paper, we directly identify the magnitude and sign of the intrinsic, extrinsic, dielectric, and secondary pyroelectric contributions to the total pyroelectric response as a function of chemistry in thin films of the canonical ferroelectric PbZr$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$O$_3$ (x = 0.40, 0.48, 0.60, and 0.80) across the morphotropic phase boundary. Using phase-sensitive frequency and applied dc-bias methods, the various pyroelectric contributions were measured. It is found that the total pyroelectric response decreases systematically as one moves from higher to lower titanium contents. This arises from a combination of decreasing intrinsic response (-232 to -97 μC m$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$) and a sign inversion (+33 to -17 μC m$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$)) of the extrinsic contribution upon crossing the morphotropic phase boundary. Additionally, the measured secondary and dielectric contributions span between -70 and -29 and 10-115 μC m$^{-2}$K$^{-1}$) under applied fields, respectively, following closely trends in the piezoelectric and dielectric susceptibility. These findings and methodologies provide novel insights into the understudied realm of pyroelectric response.

Reassessing the Market—Computation Interface to Enhance Grid Security and Efficiency

The goal of this project is to reconsider core market and reliability processes that can potentially yield to transformative advances in power grid security, reliability, and efficiency. Current electric power market designs are strongly a function of computing capabilities and limitations that were available in the mid-to-late 1990s, circa deregulation. This includes constructs such as: (1) a 2-tiered day-ahead/real-time market construct; and (2) linearized (“DC”) real power flow approximations in dispatch and pricing. At that time, state-of-the-art computational capabilities could at the limit address deterministic mixed-integer programming formulations of unit commitment (UC) and linear programming formulations of economic dispatch (ED) at limited fidelity and scale. Such constraints forced limited look-ahead time-horizons, crude approximations of AC power flow physics and operations, and artificial partitioning between day-ahead markets, hour(s)-ahead reliability processes, and real-time markets. Consequently, these limitations have resulted in limited security and reliability with increasing out-of-market payments, particularly as uncertainty associated with renewables and distributed energy resources grows.

Spin pumping from antiferromagnetic insulator spin-orbit-proximitized by adjacent heavy metal: a first-principles Floquet-nonequilibrium Green function study

Motivated by the recent experiment on spin pumping from sub-THz radiation-driven uniaxial antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) MnF 2 into heavy metal (HM) Pt hosting strong spin-orbit (SO) coupling, we compute and compare pumped spin currents in Cu/MnF 2 /Cu and Pt/MnF 2 /Cu heterostructures. Recent theories of spin pumping by AFI have relied on simplistic Hamiltonians (such as tight-binding) and the scattering approach to quantum transport yielding the so-called interfacial spin mixing conductance (SMC), but the concept of SMC ceases to be applicable when SO coupling is present directly at the interface. In contrast, we use a more general first-principles quantum transport approach which combines noncollinear density functional theory with Floquet-nonequilibrium Green's functions in order to take into account: SO-proximitized AFI as a new type of quantum material, different from isolated AFI and brought about by AFI hybridization with adjacent HM layer; strong SO coupling at the interface; and evanescent wavefunctions penetrating from Pt or Cu into AFI layer to make its interfacial region conducting rather than insulating as in the isolated AFI. The DC component of pumped spin current $I_\mathrm{DC}^{S_z}$ vs. precession cone angle $\theta_{\boldsymbol{l}}$ of the Néel vector l of AFI does not follow putative $I^{S_z}_\mathrm{DC} \propto \sin^2 \theta_{\boldsymbol{l}}$, except for very small angles $\theta_{\boldsymbol{l}} \lesssim 10^\circ$ for which we define an effective SMC from the prefactor and find that it doubles from MnF2/Cu to MnF2/Pt interface. In addition, the angular dependence $I^{S_z}_\mathrm{DC}(\theta_{\boldsymbol{l}})$ differs for opposite directions of precession of the Néel vector, leading to twice as large SMC for the right-handed than for the left-handed chirality of the precession mode.

Generation and characterization of magnetized electron beam from a DC high voltage photogun for electron beam cooling application

One of the most challenging requirements for the proposed Electron-Ion Collider is the strong cooling of the proton beam, which is key to achieving the collider’s desired luminosity of order 10 33 -10 34 cm -2 s -1 . Magnetized bunched-beam electron cooling could be a means to achieve the required high luminosity, where strong cooling is accomplished inside a cooling solenoid where the ions co-propagate with an electron beam generated from a source immersed in a magnetic field. To increase the cooling efficiency, a bunched electron beam with high bunch charge and high repetition rate is required. This work describes the production and characterization of magnetized electron beam using a compact 300 kV DC high voltage photogun and bi-alkali antimonide photocathode. Beam magnetization was studied using a diagnostic beamline that includes viewer screens for measuring the shearing angle of the electron beamlet passing through a narrow upstream slit. Simulations and corresponding measurements of beam magnetization are presented as a function of laser spot size and magnetic field strength. Correlated beam emittance with magnetic field (0–0.15 T) at the photocathode was measured for various laser spot sizes. Measurements of photocathode lifetime were carried out at different magnetized electron beam currents up to 28 mA, and bunch charge up to 0.7 nC (not simultaneously).

Absence of High-Pressure Ground-State Reentrant Ferroelectricity in PbTiO 3

We study ferroelectricity in the classic perovskite ferroelectric PbTiO 3 to high pressures with density functional theory (DFT) and experimental diamond-anvil techniques. We use second harmonic generation spectroscopy to detect lack of inversion symmetry. Consistent with early understanding and experiments, we find that ferroelectricity disappears at moderate pressures. However, DFT computations show that the disappearance arises from the overtaking of zone boundary instabilities, and not from the squeezing out of the off-centering ferroelectric displacements with pressure, as previously thought. Moreover, at high pressures the distorted perovskite phases are metastable with respect to a new dense centrosymmetric postperovskite phase with P⁢2 1 /m symmetry and 8-coordinated Ti, which becomes stable at about 70 GPa.

Characteristics of Amorphous As{sub 2}S{sub 3} Semiconductor Films Obtained via Spin Coating

Centrifugation is used in fabricating, e.g., films with large areas and/or thicknesses of several micrometers. However, it has yet to be widely employed for chalcogenide compounds, due to their relatively weak solubility in most solvents. Determining the optimum conditions for preparing solutions of chalcogenide compounds and obtaining films via centrifugation is therefore of great interest. Specific features of amorphous arsenic sulfide (As{sub 2}S{sub 3}) films prepared via the centrifugation of solutions in n-butylamine have been studied. These films were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction analysis, IR spectroscopy, atomic-force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. It was shown that amorphous As{sub 2}S{sub 3} films have a greater elasticity modulus than those of analogous composition produced via thermal evaporation in vacuum, or As{sub 2}S{sub 3} glass. A structural model based on arsenic sulfide clusters whose surfaces are bound by negatively and positively charged ions is used to explain the experimental results obtained in this work. DC measurements show that the amorphous films exhibit semiconductor-type conductivity. Their room temperature conductivity is ~10{sup −15} S/cm, which indicates good dielectric properties. The films are optically transparent starting from the yellow spectral range, making them promising functional materials for engineering applications in optics and photonics.

Characterization of Self-Magnetic Pinch (SMP) radiographic diode performance on RITS-6 at Sandia National Laboratories: 1) Diode Dynamics, DC Heating to extend Radiation Pulse

Radiographic diodes focus an intense electron beam to a small spot size to minimize the source area of energetic photons for radiographic interrogation. The self-magnetic pinch (SMP) diode has been developed as such a source and operated as a load for the RITS-6 Inductive Voltage Adder (IVA) driver. While experiments support the generally accepted conclusion that a 1:1 aspect diode (cathode diameter equals anode-cathode gap) delivers optimum SMP performance, such experiments also show that reducing the cathode diameter, while reducing spot size, also results in reduced radiation dose, by as much as 50%, and degraded shot reproducibility. Analyzation of the effective electron impingement angle on the anode converter with time made possible by a newly developed dose-rate array diagnostic indicates that fast-developing oscillations of the angle are correlated with early termination of the radiation pulse on many of the smaller-diameter SMP shots. This behavior as a function of relative cathode size persists through experiments with output voltages and currents up to 11.5 MV and 225 kA, respectively, and with spot sizes below ~ few mm. Since simulations to date have not predicted such oscillatory behavior, considerable discussion of the angle-behavior of SMP shots is made to lend credence to the inference. There is clear anecdotal evidence that DC heating of the SMP diode region leads to stabilization of this oscillatory behavior. This is the first of two papers on the performance of the SMP diode on the RITS-6 accelerator.

Defect-engineered GaN high electron mobility transistors for enhanced radiation tolerance

This study explores the radiation resilience of GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) under various preconditioning treatments—pristine, electro-pulsed, electrically overstressed, and 60 Co gamma-irradiated—with a focus on enhancing survivability in high-radiation environments. Key findings emphasize the gate region’s central role in radiation sensitivity, with increased defect concentrations leading to reduced sensitivity—as determined from reduced single-event transient intensities during pulsed-laser studies—and impacting charge-transport dynamics. Notably, the most sensitive region shifted as a function of bias state, with the drain side of the gate being most sensitive under negative gate bias and the source side under unbiased conditions due to two-dimensional electron gas disruptions. These insights clarify the mechanisms influencing radiation sensitivity in microelectronics and highlight the potential of defect and strain engineering to enhance the radiation hardness of GaN HEMTs across various operational states, providing valuable guidance for applications in space, defense, and other radiation-rich environments.

High-frequency electrical behavior in V 3 O 5 thin films

Vanadium oxides are known for their metal–insulator transition (MIT), with V 3 O 5 being notable for its transition temperature exceeding room temperature. At about 430 K, this material shows a change in crystal symmetry accompanied with one order of magnitude increase in its electrical conductivity and alterations in its optical properties. Although the property changes during the MIT in V 3 O 5 are less pronounced than those observed in VO 2 , its transition temperature is 90 K higher, making it appealing for applications requiring elevated temperatures. In this article, the high-frequency characteristics were determined in a V 3 O 5 two-terminal device in the range from 5 to 35 GHz. The S-parameters showed that the return loss at room temperature was close to −1.5 dB, and the isolation between ports was approximately −50 dB. At temperatures above the metal–insulator transition, the isolation decreased to around −40 dB at 35 GHz. For S11 and S22, similar behavior was observed at room temperature, with a notable change in the S-parameter phase of the device. This behavior suggests that V 3 O 5 may function well as a capacitor because the considerable change in phase could control the flow of electrical signals in devices. This property also may be used for matching purposes, especially considering its response to temperature changes. Additionally, conductivity calculation from S-parameters shows a decrease of approximately two orders of magnitude at 500 K and one order of magnitude at 300 K compared to DC values. These findings highlight V 3 O 5 potential for integration into radio frequency devices that demand consistent performance in high-temperature environments.

Mechanochemical Solid Form Screening of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks Using Structure-Directing Liquid Additives

We demonstrate a systematic application of the mechanochemical liquid-assisted grinding (LAG) methodology to screen for forms of zinc imidazolate (ZnIm 2 ), of fundamental importance as the simplest member of the zeolitic imidazolate framework materials family. The exploration of 45 different liquid additives, selected based on their molecular structure and physicochemical properties has resulted in eight different ZnIm 2 topological forms, appearing in 13 crystallographically distinct solid forms (including two previously unknown forms of the crb (BCT) topology), amorphous phases, and the interrupted moc-Zn 4 Im 8 HIm. All prepared topological forms were also explored computationally, using dispersion-corrected periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations, enabling the rationalization of screening outcomes, and setting the stage for future prediction of additive-directed metal–organic framework (MOF) synthesis. This first systematic exploration of LAG in screening for three-dimensional MOFs demonstrates the potential of the liquid additive to not only accelerate materials synthesis, but also to direct it toward topologically different MOFs. The discovery of novel forms of a material that already exhibits at least 21 crystallographically and functionally different forms provides a strong testimony on the power of mechanochemistry in metal–organic materials discovery.

Haldane topological spin-1 chains in a planar metal-organic framework

Haldane topological materials contain unique antiferromagnetic chains with symmetry-protected energy gaps. Such materials have potential applications in spintronics and future quantum computers. Haldane topological solids typically consist of spin-1 chains embedded in extended three-dimensional (3D) crystal structures. Here, we demonstrate that [Ni(μ-4,4'-bipyridine)(μ-oxalate)] n (NiBO) instead adopts a two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) structure of Ni 2+ spin-1 chains weakly linked by 4,4'-bipyridine. NiBO exhibits Haldane topological properties with a gap between the singlet ground state and the triplet excited state. The latter is split by weak axial and rhombic anisotropies. Several experimental probes, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction, variable-temperature powder neutron diffraction (VT-PND), VT inelastic neutron scattering (VT-INS), DC susceptibility and specific heat measurements, high-field electron spin resonance, and unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations, provide a detailed, comprehensive characterization of NiBO. Vibrational (also known as phonon) properties of NiBO have been probed by INS and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, indicating the absence of phonons near magnetic excitations in NiBO, suppressing spin-phonon coupling. The work here demonstrates that NiBO is indeed a rare 2D-MOF Haldane topological material.

Perpendicular momentum input of lower hybrid waves and its influence on driving plasma rotation.

The mechanism of perpendicular momentum input of lower hybrid waves and its influence on plasma rotation are studied. Discussion for parallel momentum input of lower hybrid waves is presented for comparison. It is found out that both toroidal and poloidal projections of perpendicular momentum input of lower hybrid waves are stronger than those of parallel momentum input. The perpendicular momentum input of lower hybrid waves therefore plays a dominant role in forcing the changes of rotation velocity observed during lower hybrid current drive. Lower hybrid waves convert perpendicular momentum carried by the waves into the momentum of dc electromagnetic field by inducing a resonant-electron flow across flux surfaces therefore charge separation and a radial dc electric field. The dc field releases its momentum into plasma through the Lorentz force acting on the radial return current driven by the radial electric field. Plasma is spun up by the Lorentz force. An improved quasilinear theory with gyro-phase dependent distribution function is developed to calculate the radial flux of resonant electrons. Rotations are determined by a set of fluid equations for bulk electrons and ions, which are solved numerically by applying a finite-difference method. Analytical expressions for toroidal and poloidal rotations are derived using the same hydrodynamic model.

Power converter using near-load output capacitance, direct inductor contact, and/or remote current sense

An apparatus includes a first circuit board including first components including a load, and a second circuit board including second components including switching power devices and an output inductor. Ground and output voltage contacts between the circuit boards are made through soldered or connectorized interfaces. Certain components on the first circuit board and certain components, including the output inductor, on the second circuit board act as a DC-DC voltage converter for the load. An output capacitance for the conversion is on the first circuit board with no board-to-board interface between the output capacitance and the load. The inductance of the board-to-board interface functions as part of the output inductor's inductance and not as a parasitic inductance. Sense components for sensing current through the output inductor are located on the first circuit board. Parasitic inductance of the board-to-board interface has less effect on a sense signal provided to a controller.
