Random fields from quenched disorder in an archetype for correlated electrons: The parallel spin stripe phase of La 1.6 – x Nd 0.4 Sr x CuO 4 at the 1/8 anomaly

The parallel stripe phase is remarkable both in its own right, and in relation to the other phases with which it coexists. Its inhomogeneous nature makes such states susceptible to random fields from quenched magnetic vacancies. Here we argue this is the case by introducing low concentrations of nonmagnetic Zn impurities (0%–10%) into La 1.6–x ⁢Nd 0.4⁢ Sr x ⁢CuO 4 (Nd-LSCO) with x=0.125 in single-crystal form, well below the percolation threshold of ~41% for a two-dimensional square lattice. Elastic neutron scattering measurements on these crystals show clear magnetic quasi-Bragg peaks at all Zn dopings. While all the Zn-doped crystals display order parameters that merge into each other and the background at ~68 K, the temperature dependence of the order parameter as a function of Zn concentration is drastically different. This result is consistent with meandering charge stripes within the parallel stripe phase, which are pinned in the presence of quenched magnetic vacancies. In turn it implies vacancies that preferentially occupy sites within the charge stripes, and hence that can be very effective at disrupting superconductivity in Nd-LSCO (x=0.125), and, by extension, in all systems exhibiting parallel stripes.

Low-energy quasi-circular electron correlations with charge order wavelength in Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ

Most resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) studies of dynamic charge order correlations in the cuprates have focused on the high-symmetry directions of the copper oxide plane. However, scattering along other in-plane directions should not be ignored as it may help understand, for example, the origin of charge order correlations or the isotropic scattering resulting in strange metal behavior. Our RIXS experiments reveal dynamic charge correlations over the qx-qy scattering plane in underdoped Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ . Tracking the softening of the RIXS-measured bond-stretching phonon, we show that these dynamic correlations exist at energies below approximately 70 meV and are centered around a quasi-circular manifold in the q x -q y scattering plane with radius equal to the magnitude of the charge order wave vector, q CO . This phonon-tracking procedure also allows us to rule out fluctuations of short-range directional charge order (i.e., centered around [q x = ±q CO , q y = 0] and [q x = 0, q y = ±q CO ]) as the origin of the observed correlations.

Comparison of the quadratic configuration interaction and coupled cluster approaches to electron correlation including the effect of triple excitations

The recently proposed quadratic configuration interaction (QCI) method is compared with the more rigorous coupled cluster (CC) approach for a variety of chemical systems. Some of these systems are well represented by a single-determinant reference function and others are not. The finite order singles and doubles correlation energy, the perturbational triples correlation energy, and a recently devised diagnostic for estimating the importance of multireference effects are considered. The spectroscopic constants of CuH, the equilibrium structure of cis-(NO)2 and the binding energies of Be3, Be4, Mg3, and Mg4 were calculated using both approaches. The diagnostic for estimating multireference character clearly demonstrates that the QCI method becomes less satisfactory than the CC approach as non-dynamical correlation becomes more important, in agreement with a perturbational analysis of the two methods and the numerical estimates of the triple excitation energies they yield. The results for CuH show that the differences between the two methods become more apparent as the chemical systems under investigation becomes more multireference in nature and the QCI results consequently become less reliable. Nonetheless, when the system of interest is dominated by a single reference determinant both QCI and CC give very similar results.

The protonation of N2O reexamined - A case study on the reliability of various electron correlation methods for minima and transition states

The protonation of N2O and the intramolecular proton transfer in N2OH(+) are studied using various basis sets and a variety of methods, including second-order many-body perturbation theory (MP2), singles and doubles coupled cluster (CCSD), the augmented coupled cluster (CCSD/T/), and complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) methods. For geometries, MP2 leads to serious errors even for HNNO(+); for the transition state, only CCSD/T/ produces a reliable geometry due to serious nondynamical correlation effects. The proton affinity at 298.15 K is estimated at 137.6 kcal/mol, in close agreement with recent experimental determinations of 137.3 +/- 1 kcal/mol.

A Correlative Electron Microscopy Study of a Ru-rich Metal Grain from a Calcium-aluminum-rich Inclusion

Calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) are sub-mm to cm-sized objects composed of highly refractory Ca- and Al-rich mineral phases, hosted in chondritic meteorites. The component minerals of CAIs were thermodynamically predicted to be condense at high temperatures in the cooling solar nebula. Isotopic analyses place the age of these objects at 4.567 Ga, making them the first formed solids in our solar system. The chemical compositions and crystal structures of the Ca- and Al-rich minerals serve as imprints of the thermochemical environments in which they formed. Therefore, detailed microstructural analyses of CAIs can provide insight into the processes that prevailed in the early solar system.

Correlation-driven electronic reconstruction in FeTe 1−x Se x

Electronic correlation is of fundamental importance to high temperature superconductivity. While the low energy electronic states in cuprates are dominantly affected by correlation effects across the phase diagram, observation of correlation-driven changes in fermiology amongst the iron-based superconductors remains rare. Here we present experimental evidence for a correlation-driven reconstruction of the Fermi surface tuned independently by two orthogonal axes of temperature and Se/Te ratio in the iron chalcogenide family FeTe 1−x Se x . We demonstrate that this reconstruction is driven by the de-hybridization of a strongly renormalized d xy orbital with the remaining itinerant iron 3 d orbitals in the emergence of an orbital-selective Mott phase. Our observations are further supported by our theoretical calculations to be salient spectroscopic signatures of such a non-thermal evolution from a strongly correlated metallic phase into an orbital-selective Mott phase in d xy as Se concentration is reduced.
