Vibrations of cantilevered doubly-curved shallow shells

Vibrational characteristics are determined for a previously unsolved class of problems, that of doubly-curved shallow shells having rectangular planforms, clamped along one edge and free on the other three. The solution procedure uses the Ritz method with algebraic polynomial trial functions. Convergence studies are made, and accurate frequencies and contour plots of mode shapes are presented for various curvature ratios, including spherical, circular cylindrical and hyperbolic paraboloidal shells. Particular emphasis is given to the effect of adding spanwise curvature to shells having chordwise curvature; numerous published references already exist for the case of zero spanwise curvature. The effects of changing aspect ratio, thickness ratio and Poisson's ratio are also studied.

Forced convective heat transfer in curved diffusers

Measurements of the velocity characteristics of the flows in two curved diffusers of rectangular cross section with C and S-shaped centerlines are presented and related to measurements of wall heat transfer coefficients along the heated flat walls of the ducts. The velocity results were obtained by laser-Doppler anemometry in a water tunnel and the heat transfer results by liquid crystal thermography in a wind tunnel. The thermographic technique allowed the rapid and inexpensive measurement of wall heat transfer coefficients along flat walls of arbitrary boundary shapes with an accuracy of about 5 percent. The results show that an increase in secondary flow velocities near the heated wall causes an increase in the local wall heat transfer coefficient, and quantify the variation for maximum secondary-flow velocities in a range from 1.5 to 17 percent of the bulk flow velocity.

A study of sound transmission in curved duct bends by the Galerkin method

A computational procedure based on the Galerkin method is developed to study the sound transmission and reflection characteristics of circularly curved bends of rectangular ducts. This procedure is adaptable to routine computer calculation. An important component of the computer program consists of a QR iterative algorithm which solves the matrix eigenvalue problem generated by the Galerkin method. The present procedure produced very satisfactory convergent results when applied even to cases where the incident wave has high frequency and high wave mode numbers. Some properties of the Galerkin solution are investigated. Its relationship to the classical solution by the method of separation of variables is discussed.

Curved-channel microchannel array plates

The microchannel array plate (MCP) is a photoelectric detector with an imaging capability comparable to that of a photographic plate. Recently MCPs in which the channels are curved to inhibit ion feedback have become available. These devices represent a major advance in MCP technology, since a single curved-channel MCP can be operated stably at high gain in the pulse-counting mode without any of the problems of stability of response or short lifetime reported for 'chevron' MCP detectors. Attention is given to the mode of operation of channel electron multipliers (CEM) and MCP, curved-channel MCP, test procedures, and performance characteristics. The accumulated test data show that the fundamental operating characteristics of the curved-channel MCP are directly related to those for the CEM.

The Effect of Slots and Flaps on the Lift and Drag of the Mcdonnell Airplanes Determined in Flight

This note contains the results of flight test conducted by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics on a low-wing monoplane equipped with leading-edge slots extending over the entire wing and flaps extending only to the ailerons, to find their effect on the lift and drag characteristics of the airplane. Curves are given showing the lift and drag characteristics of the airplane for the following conditions of the slots and flaps neutral; slots closed and flaps down; and slots open and flaps down. In addition, the high and low speed in level flight and the climbing characteristics are given. The results show that the slots used alone increase the maximum lift coefficient 54 per cent; the flaps alone increase it 38 per cent; and the slots and flaps in combination decrease the landing speed from 60 to 43 m.p.h.; increase the speed range of the airplane 40 per cent; and increase the glide angle at landing speed 4.2 degrees.

Broadband Transmission Loss Due to Reverberant Excitation

The noise transmission characteristics of candidate curved aircraft sidewall panel constructions is examined analytically using finite element models of the selected panel geometries. The models are validated by experimental modal analyses and transmission loss testing. The structural and acoustic response of the models are then examined when subjected to random or reverberant excitation, the simulation of which is also discussed. For a candidate curved honeycomb panel, the effect of add-on trim panel treatments is examined. Specifically, two different mounting configurations are discussed and their effect on the transmission loss of the panel is presented. This study finds that the add-on acoustical treatments do improve on the primary structures transmission loss characteristics, however, much more research is necessary to draw any valid conclusions about the optimal configuration for the maximum noise transmission loss. This paper describes several directions for the extension of this work.

Performance of 15-Stage Experimental J71 Axial-Flow Compressor: II - Individual Stage Performance Characteristics

The first four stages were found to cause a major part of the poor low-speed efficiency of this compressor. The low design-speed over-all pressure ratio at surge was caused by the first and the twelfth to fifteenth stages. The multiple over-all performance curves in the intermediate-speed range were at least partly the result of double-branched characteristic curves for the third and seventh stages.

Soil, water, and vegetation conditions in South Texas

The author has identified the following significant results. Reflectance measurements with a field spectroradiometer on nine dates (between December 9 and April 8) during the growing season of two wheat varieties, Milam and Penjamo, showed that the reflectance curves had the characteristic shape of vegetated surfaces by 4 weeks after the emergence. Green light (0.55 micron) reflectance was maximal and between water absorption bands (1.65 and 2.2 microns) reflectance was minimal when green vegetation development was greatest. Computer classification was accomplished for 81,000 hectare coastal rangeland area for October 13 and December 10, 1975, overpass dates. A hard freeze occurred between these two dates and many of the deciduous woody species defoliated so that more light penetrated to the herbaceous understory in December than in October.

Swept group delay measurement

Direct recording of group delay measurements on a system under temperature and stress tests employs modulated carrier frequency sweep over an S or X band. Reference path and test paths to separate detectors utilize a power divider e.g., a directional coupler or a hybrid T junction. An initially balanced phase comparator is swept in frequency by modulated carrier over the band of interest for different conditions of temperature and/or mechanical stress to obtain characteristic group delay curves.

Effect of casing treatment on performance of a two-stage high-pressure-ratio fan

A two-stage fan, previously tested with a solid casing, was tested with a casing with circumferential grooves over the tips of both rotors (casing treatment). Tests were conducted at 80 and 100 percent of design speed with uniform flow. The casing treatment improved the flow range and stall margin significantly without changing the characteristics overall performance curves of total-pressure and efficiency as functions of weight flow, other than extending them to lower weight flows.

Monitoring and mapping global vegetation cover using data from meteorological satellites

The role of coarse resolution meteorological satellite data for monitoring and mapping of vegetation for global, continental and regional scales is outlined. In the NOAA products used the effects of cloud cover are reduced by the generation of temporal composites of images of the normalized difference vegetation index. Different land cover types are shown to have characteristic spectral phenological curves. Such data have the disadvantage of effectively increasing the apparent areal extent of small areas of green vegetation.

Spectral alteration effects in chondritic gas-rich breccias - Implications for S-Class and Q-Class asteroids

Reflection spectra were obtained from sawed or freshly broken surfaces of gas-rich matrix regions in a number of ordinary chondrites (Dubrovnik, Cangas de Onis, Olivenza, and Dimmitt) which are believed to represent lithified portions of asteroid regoliths that were once directly exposed to space, with the purpose of relating these chondrites to Class S asteroids. However, the observations did not detect curved red continuum characteristic for Class S asteroid spectra, suggesting that it is unlikely for any well-observed Class S asteroid to be a source of ordinary chondrites. It is suggested that the newly discovered spectral class 'Q', of which asteroid 1982 Apollo is the prototype, provides a viable alternative of a parent body.

A laser based computer aided non-intrusive technique for full field flow characterization in macroscopic curved channels

This paper presents the application of a laser based, computer aided image processing technique for the nonintrusive evaluation of field velocities and accelerations in a 180 deg curved channel geometry, characteristic of inlet passages of the cowls of airbreathing aircraft engines. The method based on the illumination of the test section with a laser generated planar sheet of light, allows microscopic or macroscopic surveillance of fluid flow across or along large cross sections for relatively long (greater than 1 sec) periods of time. The method is Lagrangian in concept and permits identification and tracking of the same particle, thus facilitating construction of more comprehensive trajectories and the calculation of velocities and accelerations.
