Flume and single-pass washing systems for fresh-cut produce processing: Disinfection by-products evaluation

Free chlorine is widely used in fresh-cut produce washing to minimize microbial cross-contamination, but its application can also lead to the formation of harmful disinfection byproducts (DBPs). This study compared DBPs in process water and washed produce during commercial operation. Samples of shredded lettuce and diced cabbages washed in chlorinated water in the traditional double-flume wash and novel immersion-free single-pass wash systems were collected at multiple time points and locations from the processing lines. A suite of 33 conventional and emerging DBPs, including 4 trihalomethanes (THMs), 9 haloacetic acids (HAAs), 9 nitrogenous DBPs (N-DBPs), and 11 carbonaceous DBPs (C-DBPs), were investigated. Overall, N-DBPs and HAAs dominated the concentration of detected DBPs. Wash water in the flumes contained 7–111 folds higher DBP levels compared to that in the single-pass system, with the abundance of DBPs following the order of N-DBPs > HAAs > C-DBPs > THMs. DBPs were detected on washed produce, presenting primarily in the forms of N-DBPs and HAAs followed by C-DBPs and THMs. While higher levels of DBPs were detected in flume-washed produce, the final potable water rinse significantly reduced the DBP concentration in these products. The concentrations of THMs and HAAs on these washed products were used to estimate potential exposure via consumption of fresh-cut produce and the levels were below the daily allowable exposure for drinking water standard established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The detected high concentration and potential toxicity of N-DBPs indicate the need for further research. Here, the findings of this study advance the understanding of the formation and removal of DBPs during wash processes, and identify additional research opportunities for further reduction in DBPs and food safety improvement.

Short-cut Methods versus Rigorous Methods for Performance-evaluation of Distillation Configurations

Here, this study demonstrates the efficacy of a short-cut method such as the Global Minimization Algorithm (GMA), that uses assumptions of ideal mixtures, constant molar overflow (CMO) and pinched columns, in pruning the search-space of distillation column configurations for zeotropic multicomponent separation, to provide a small subset of attractive configurations with low minimum heat duties. The short-cut method, due to its simplifying assumptions, is computationally efficient, yet reliable in identifying the small subset of useful configurations for further detailed process evaluation. This two-tier approach allows expedient search of the configuration space containing hundreds to thousands of candidate configurations for a given application.

Laser Cutting and Micromachining for Localized and Targeted Solar Cell Characterization

Laser cutting and micromachining can be applied to solar cell materials for processing and characterization applications. An ultrashort pulse (USP) laser with sub-picosecond pulse width can remove material with minimal thermal effects or damage, which is termed `cold ablation'. Such USP laser cutting and scribing can be implemented for isolating areas within a larger cell while maintaining electrical performance and preventing laser-induced damage and shunting. Laser micromachining has been used to isolate a shunt to improve cell performance and to isolate a small, selected area to define a sample suitable for deep level transient spectroscopy.

Theory of Intermittent Cutting. 3. Description of Tool Exit from the Blank

Vorontsov’s plastic-flow method permits the derivation of a model of cutting for the region where the tool exits the blank. The stress–strain state of the blank is determined, and the dimensions of the plastic-deformation zone are calculated. The main cutting parameters are shown to be variable.

Determining the Mean Frictional Coefficient in Metal Cutting

An analytical formula is derived for determining the frictional coefficient at cutter–blank contact, on the basis of the cutting equations and the shear angle, and is verified by means of experimental data. This formula may be used to calculate the cutting parameters, without constraints on the significant factors.

Control of the Machining Precision in Thread Cutting

In research on thread cutting, the flaws inevitably arising in the first two and last two turns of the thread, when the process is unsteady, are analyzed. Specifically, insertion and removal of the tool from the workpiece are accompanied by abrupt change in thread diameter: abrupt decrease in the case of threads on shafts; and increase for threads in holes. That leads to the appearance of slots on assembly, thereby increasing the likelihood of accidents and other problems in thread operation. A method of eliminating such gaps is proposed and tested: control of the machining precision in the course of thread cutting. In particular, the thread diameter and pitch are controlled by compensation of the axial and radial elastic displacements of the tool, based on timely correction of the transverse and longitudinal supply during the unsteady stage of the process. Compensation of the machining errors improves the dimensional precision of the thread and decreases the systematic errors and spread in the thread dimensions.

Eigenfrequency-Based Prediction of the Cutting Properties of Superhard Inserts

The relation between the cutting properties of superhard tool inserts and their eigenfrequency is studied. The relation between the life of inserts and their acoustic properties is confirmed experimentally in the turning of high-temperature nickel alloys and quenched steels. A method is developed for determining the eigenfrequency of cutting inserts, along with the corresponding equipment.

Evolution of the Dynamic Cutting System with Irreversible Energy Transformation in the Machining Zone

The evolution of the dynamic cutting system is simulated with different trajectories of the power of irreversible transformations in performing work. The evolutionary changes associated with change in tool wear and in surface precision and quality depend on the dynamic properties, on the subsystems that interact through cutting, and also on the initial dynamic relationship formed by the process.

Stability Evaluation for a Damped, Constrained-Motion Cutting Force Dynamometer

This paper describes the dynamic stability evaluation of a constrained-motion dynamometer (CMD) with passive damping. The CMD’s flexure-based design offers an alternative to traditional piezoelectric cutting force dynamometers, which can exhibit adverse effects of the complex structural dynamics on the measurement accuracy. In contrast, the CMD system’s structural dynamics are nominally single degree of freedom and are conveniently altered by material selection, flexure element geometry, and element arrangement. In this research, a passive damping approach is applied to increase the viscous damping ratio and, subsequently, the stability limit. Cutting tests were completed and the in situ CMD displacement and velocity signals were sampled at the spindle rotating frequency. The periodic sampling approach was used to determine if the milling response was synchronous with the spindle rotation (stable) or not (chatter) by constructing Poincaré maps for both experiment and prediction (time-domain simulation). It was found that the viscous damping coefficient was increased by 130% and the critical stability limit was increased from 4.3 mm (no damping) to 15.4 mm (with damping).

A physical basis for cosmological correlators from cuts

Significant progress has been made in our understanding of the analytic structure of FRW wavefunction coefficients, facilitated by the development of efficient algorithms to derive the differential equations they satisfy. Moreover, recent findings indicate that the twisted cohomology of the associated hyperplane arrangement defining FRW integrals overestimates the number of integrals required to define differential equations for the wave-function coefficient. We demonstrate that the associated dual cohomology is automatically organized in a way that is ideal for understanding and exploiting the cut/residue structure of FRW integrals. Utilizing this understanding, we develop a systematic approach to organize compatible sequential residues, which dictates the physical subspace of FRW integrals for any n -site, ℓ-loop graph. In particular, the physical subspace of tree-level FRW wavefunction coefficients is populated by differential forms associated to cuts/residues that factorize the integrand of the wavefunction coefficient into only flat space amplitudes. After demonstrating the validity of our construction using intersection theory, we develop simple graphical rules for cut tubings that enumerate the space of physical cuts and, consequently, differential forms without any calculation.

Emergent unitarity, all-loop cuts and integrations from the ABJM amplituhedron

We elaborate on aspects of a new positive geometry proposed recently, which was conjectured to be the four-point amplituhedron for ABJM theory. We study generalized unitarity cuts from the geometry, and in particular we prove that (1) the four-point integrand satisfies perturbative unitarity (or optical theorem) to all loops, which follows directly from the geometry, and (2) vanishing cuts involving odd-point amplitudes follow from the “bipartite” nature of the associated “negative geometries”, which justifies their appearance in ABJM theory. We also take a first step in integrating the forms of these negative geometries and obtain an infrared-finite quantity up to two loops, from which we extract the cusp anomalous dimension at leading order.

Riemann–Hilbert Problems on a Cut Plane

We consider the Riemann–Hilbert-type boundary-value problems in the case of several unknown functions and obtain solvability conditions and index formulas for the linear conjugation problem, the Riemann–Hilbert problem, and the Riemann–Hilbert–Poincaré problem on a plane cut along several regular arcs in various weighted functional classes. We also examine the general differential boundary-value problem for analytic functions and boundary-value problems with shifts and complex conjugation on a cut plane.

Cross-cutting strategies to lower electricity use of miscellaneous electric loads in the domestic sector

Miscellaneous Electric Loads (MELs) account for roughly one quarter of building electricity use in most developed countries. A product-specific approach to lowering MELs electricity use in this category takes too long and costs too much because there are so many MELs, each providing unique services. An alternative approach focusing on key functionalities was therefore explored. These functionalities include: (1) power management, (2) power scaling, and (3) power conversion. Cross-cutting efficiency improvements to these functionalities can be incorporated into broad categories of MELs, thus saving electricity and lowering costs. Even though the population of MELs is diverse and rapidly evolving, major technical opportunities exist to improve their efficiency in these functionalities. Research into energy-saving solutions within the cross-cutting technologies will probably have larger savings than focusing on single products.

Algebraic cutting equations

The cutting equations are diagrammatic identities that are used to prove perturbative unitarity in quantum field theory. In this paper, we derive algebraic, upgraded versions of them. Differently from the diagrammatic versions, the algebraic identities also holds for propagators with arbitrary, nonvanishing widths. In particular, the cut propagators do not need to vanish off shell. The new approach provides a framework to address unsolved problems of perturbative quantum field theory and a tool to investigate perturbative unitarity in higher-derivative theories that are relevant to the problem of quantum gravity, such as the Lee–Wick models and the fakeon models.

Energy system analysis of cutting off Russian gas supply to the European Union

The reduction of European Union's pipeline gas imports from Russia as a consequence of the Russian war against Ukraine has had severe economy-wide implications for the EU. Using a multisector integrated assessment model (GCAM), we find that a potential complete cut-off of Russian pipeline gas exports to the EU unevenly impacts the energy mix, prices, and trade flows of different subregions within the EU, depending on their access to alternative gas pipelines and LNG infrastructure. Moreover, there are also large changes in the volume and geographical distribution of global gas infrastructure capacity additions and stranded assets. Our results show that by significantly reducing demand for natural gas, the EU Fit-for-55 policy framework already improves resilience against a complete and persistent cut-off of Russian pipeline gas. However, further improvements in energy efficiency and renewable targets could further soften impacts, while bringing climate objectives closer in sight.
