Dehydration-induced luminescence in clay minerals

Reports of triboluminescent phenomena in organic crystalline materials prompted a search for related processes in clay minerals. The reported extensive mechanical distortion produced on freezing and drying of montmorillonite was particularly interesting because of studies of condensation reactions in a wet/dry cycled reaction sequence. The discovery of an unusual luminescent process in several clay minerals is reported and its characteristics are described.

Quantum-chemical modeling of smectite clays

A self-consistent charge extended Hueckel program is used in modeling isomorphic substitution of Al(3+) by Na(+), K(+), Mg(2+), Fe(2+), and Fe(3+) in the octahedral layer of a dioctahedral smectite clay, such as montmorillonite. Upon comparison of the energies involved in the isomorphic substitution, it is found that the order for successful substitution is as follows: Al(3+), Fe(3+), Mg(2+), Fe(2+), Na(+), which is equivalent to Ca(2+), and then K(+). This ordering is found to be consistent with experimental observation. The calculations also make it possible to determine the possible penetration of metal ions into the clay's 2:1 crystalline layer. For the cases studied, this type of penetration can occur at elevated temperatures into regions where isomorphic substitution has occurred with metal ions that bear a formal charge of less than 3+. The computed behavior of the electronic structure in the presence of isomorphic substitution is found to be similar to behavior associated with semiconductors.

The colloidal chemistry of ceramic clays

The colloidal chemistry and mineralogy of two argil minerals were studied. Deposits of kaolin and of ceramic clays in the United States and England are discussed for the probable mechanism of formation. The structural modifications of the bed, original material associated with the clays and the proper use of flocculants are discussed.

Properties of filamentary sublimation residues from dispersions of clay in ice

Results are reported from experimental studies of the formation of ice mixed with mineral particles in an effort to simulate similar processes on natural surfaces such as at the Martian poles, on comet nuclei and on icy satellites. The study consisted of low-pressure, low-temperature sublimations of water ice from dilutions of water-clay (montmorillonite and Cabosil) dispersions of various component ratios. Liquid dispersions were sprayed into liquid nitrogen to form droplets at about -50 C. Both clay-water dispersions left a filamentary residue on the bottom of the Dewar after the water ice had sublimated off. The residue was studied with optical and SEM microscopy, the latter method revealing a high electrical conductivity in the residue. The results suggest that the sublimation of the water ice can leave a surface crust, which may be analogous to processes at the Martian poles and on comet nuclei. The process could proceed by the attachment of water molecules to salt crystals during the hottest part of the Martian year. The residue remaining was found to remain stable up to 370 C, be porous, and remain resilient, which could allow it to insulate ice bodies such as comets in space.

Shocked quartz and more: Impact signatures in K-T boundary clays and claystones

Quartz grains displaying multiple sets of planar features are described from numerous Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) boundary clays and claystones at both marine and nonmarine depositional sites around the world. All these sites also show anomalously high amounts of iridium and enrichments of other siderophile elements in cosmic ratios within these boundary units. This combination of mineralogical and geochemical features are used in support of an impact hypothesis for the end-Cretaceous event. Recently, it was suggested that some combination of explosive and nonexplosive volcanism associated with the formation of the Deccan traps in India could be responsible for the mineralogy and geochemistry seen in the K-T boundary units. Besides the obvious contradition of simultaneous explosive and nonexplosive volcanism from one locality during an instant of geologic time, there remains the difficulty of spreading both iridium (and trace elements in cosmic proportions) and quartz grains around the world by volcanic (atmospheric) transport. In addition, the ability of volcanism to produce the type of shock metamorphism seen in minerals at the K-T boundary was not demonstrated. Multiple sets of shock lamellae in quartz are considered characteristic of shock metamorphism in rocks at the sites of known impact craters and are the type of deformation seen in quartz from K-T boundary clays and claystones. Single sets of poorly defined lamellae described from rare quartz grains in certain volcanic deposits are characteristic of tectonic deformation and do not correspond to the shock lamellae in quartz from K-T sediments and impact structures. So-called shock mosaicism in quartz and feldspar grains described from volcanic deposits can result from many processes other than shock metamorphism, and therefore is not considered to be an effect characteristic solely of shock. The mineralogy of shock-metamorphosed grains at the K-T boundary also argues against a volcanic origin.

Mineralogy of Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary clays in the Chicxulub structure in northern Yucatan

The Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) boundary clay layer is thought to be derived from ejecta material from meteorite impact, based on the anomalous concentrations of noble metals in the layer. Because of recent findings of a half-meter thick ejecta deposit at the K/T boundary in Haiti, efforts have focused on locating a large impact feature in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. One of the leading candidates for the site of a large impact is the Chicxulub structure located on the northern Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The Chicxulub structure is a subsurface zone of upper Cretaceous igneous rocks, carbonates, and breccias. The structure has been interpreted to be a 200 km diameter; however, there is some question to the size of the structure or to the fact that it even is an impact feature. Little is known about the mineralogy of this structure; the objective of this study was to determine the clay mineralogy of core samples from within the Chicxulub structure.

Spectroscopic analyses of Fe and water in clays: A Martian surface weathering study

Martian surface morphology suggests the presence of liquid H2O on Mars in the past. Reflectance spectra of the Martian surface include features which correspond to the crystal field transitions of iron, as well as features supporting the presence of ice and minerals containing structural OH and surface water. Researchers initiated further spectroscopic studies of surface iron and water and structural OH in clays in order to determine what remotely obtained spectra can indicate about the presence of clays on Mars based on a clearer understanding of the factors influencing the spectral features. Current technology allows researchers to better correlate the low frequency fundamental stretching and bending vibrations of O-H bonds with the diagnostic near infrared overtone and combination bands used in mineral characterization and identification.

Ruthenium/Iridium Ratios in the Cretaceous-tertiary Boundary Clay: Implications for Global Dispersal and Fractionation Within the Ejecta Cloud

Ruthenium (Ru) and iridium (Ir) are the least mobile platinum group elements (PGE's) within the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) boundary clay (BC). The Ru/Ir ratio is, therefore, the most useful PGE interelement ratio for distinguishing terrestrial and extraterrestrial contributions to the BC. The Ru/Ir ratio of marine K-T sections (1.77 +/- 0.53) is statistically different from that of the continental sections (0.93 +/- 0.28). The marine Ru/Ir ratios are chondritic (C1 = 1.48 +/- 0.09), but the continental ratios are not. We discovered an inverse correlation of shocked quartz size (or distance from the impact site) and Ru/Ir ratio. This correlation may arise from the difference in Ru and Ir vaporization temperature and/or fractionation during condensation from the ejecta cloud. Postsedimentary alteration, remobilization, or terrestrial PGE input may be responsible for the Ru/Ir ratio variations within the groups of marine and continental sites studied. The marine ratios could also be attained if approximately 15 percent of the boundary metals were contributed by Deccan Trap emissions. However, volcanic emissions could not have been the principal source of the PGE's in the BC because mantle PGE ratios and abundances are inconsistent with those measured in the clay. The Ru/Ir values for pristine Tertiary mantle xenoliths (2.6 +/- 0.48), picrites (4.1 +/- 1.8), and Deccan Trap basalt (3.42 +/- 1.96) are all statistically distinct from those measured in the K-T BC.

Dehydroxylated clay silicates on Mars: Riddles about the Martian regolith solved with ferrian saponites

Clay silicates, resulting from the chemical weathering of volcanic glasses and basaltic rocks of Mars, are generally believed to be major constituents of the martian regolith and atmospheric dust. Because little attention has been given to the role, if any, of Mg-bearing clay silicates on the martian surface, the crystal chemistry, stability, and reactivity of Mg-Fe smectites are examined. Partially dehydroxylated ferrian saponites are suggested to be major constituents of the surface of Mars, regulating several properties of the regolith.

Aqueous geochemistry on Mars: Possible clues from salts and clays in SNC meteorites

All subgroups of the shergottite, nakhlite, and chassignite (SNC) meteorites contain traces of water precipitated minerals that include various combinations of carbonates, sulfates, halides, ferric oxides, and aluminosilicate clays of preterrestrial origin. Oxygen three-isotope analysis of thermally extracted bulk water has confirmed that at least some of the water in SNC's is, indeed, extraterrestrial. A mixture of aqueous precipitates found in the SNC's, comprising smectite, illite, and gypsum (with minor halite +/- calcite and hematite), provides a self-consistent, though not unique, model for the bulk elemental composition of surface sediments at the Viking Lander sites. Therefore, if the salts and clays in SNC's are truly linked to aqueous alteration and soil formation on Mars, then the suite of SNC secondary minerals might provide the best currently available insight into near-surface martian chemistry.

Elemental Abundance Distributions in Basalt Clays and Meteorites: Is It a Biosignature?

Volcanic glass altered by microorganisms exhibits distinctive textures differing significantly from abiotic alteration [1-4]. We have previously presented morphological evidence of bioweathering in sub-oceanic basalt glass [5] and olivine [6], and noted similar alterations in Nakhla [7]. We have also introduced an autonomous Bayesian probabilistic classification methodology to identify biotic and abiotic alteration in sub-oceanic basalts using elemental abundance data [8]. We now present data from multiple sub-oceanic sites addressing the more general question of utilizing elemental abundance distribution in clays as a valid biosignature for the exploration of putative clay alteration products in meteorites.

Clay Bearing Units in the Region around Mawrth Vallis: Stratigraphy, Extent, and Possible Alteration Fronts

The largest exposure of phyllosilicates on Mars occurs on the highland plains around Mawrth Vallis. This exposure extends for about 300 km southward from the edge of the dichotomy boundary, covering an area greater than 200 x 300 kilometers over an elevation range of approximately 2000 meters. At least two different types of hydrated phyllosilicates (Fe/Mg-rich and Al-rich phyllosilicates) have been identified in OMEGA data based on absorption bands near 2.3 and 2.2 micrometers, respectively. These clay-bearing units are associated with layered, indurated light-toned units with complex spatial and stratigraphic relationships, and are unconfomably overlain by a darker, indurated, more heavily cratered unit. Ongoing analysis of OMEGA (approximately 1 kilometer/pixel) and CRISM multi-spectral (MSP, 200 meters/pixel) data reveal hydrated minerals with absorptions at approximately 2.2 or 2.3 micrometers in locations up to 300 kilometers away from the borders of the previously identified extent of clay-bearing units. We seek to: 1) further constrain the mineralogy of the hydrated species identified in [5], and 2) understand spatial and stratigraphic relationships between the different hydrated minerals and the cratered plains units in which they are found. In this work we perform mineralogical and stratigraphic comparisons between units to test whether these extended units may be related, in order to establish a broad zone of alteration.

Clay Sediments from Basaltic Terrains: Implications for Sedimentary Processes on Mars

The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover, Curiosity, has been traversing across fluvial, lacustrine, and eolian sedimentary rocks since it touched down in 2012. The CheMin X-ray diffractometer (XRD) on board Curiosity has revealed smectite clay minerals in most fluvio-lacustrine samples and abundant X-ray amorphous materials in all samples analyzed to date. For example, mudstones from the Sheepbed member at the base of the stratigraphic section and the lower part of the Murray formation contain on average ~7 to 20 wt% smectite and ~30 to 46 wt% X-ray amorphous abundances. On Earth, smectite and secondary X-ray amorphous materials are juvenile weathering products that are generated in sedimentary environments and ultimately record the interaction between primary igneous minerals and the hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. For this study, we investigated glacio-fluvio-eolian sediments generated in basaltic terrains as terrestrial analogs for the mudstones from Gale Crater, Mars. This work focuses on the clay sized sediments (<2 μm) from these deposits as this grain size hosts the most mineralogically and geochemically altered detritus in sedimentary environments. The goal of investigating basaltic sedimentation is to create a terrestrial reference frame that sheds light on the paleoclimate and paleoaqueous conditions responsible for shaping the ancient sedimentary environments of Mars (e.g., Gale Crater and Jezero Crater).

Mechanical and physical properties of inorganic polymer cement made of iron-rich laterite and lateritic clay: A comparative study

In this work, two different laterites (iron contents of 13.07 and 49.34 wt%, respectively, for lateritic clay, LAC, and iron-rich laterite, LAI) were selected and calcined at 600 °C. The obtained calcined laterites, namely LAI600 and LAC600, were separately mixed with an alkaline solution (silicate modulus of 1.35) or an acidic solution (phosphoric acid solution at pH ≤ 2) for the synthesis of inorganic polymer products. The fabricated products were cured at 20 °C (ambient) and 40 °C (oven). The obtained results showed that the compressive strength of each series of alkaline-based inorganic polymer binder increased with ageing time (7 and 28 days) for room temperature curing, while the reverse trend was noted for oven-cured specimens. The best mechanical performance was obtained when using a phosphoric acid solution, 38 and 52 ± 1 MPa; 62 and 65 ± 1 MPa at 28 days for LAC and LAI respectively. It appeared that a higher iron content within the laterite contributed to an increase in the compressive strength under acidic conditions (LAI (59 MPa) > LAC (48 MPa)) compared to the behavior obtained under alkaline conditions (LAI (6 MPa) < LAC (29 MPa)). Accordingly, the acidic products exhibited a dense structure (with lower porosity) and contained amorphous iron/aluminium phosphate phases such as berlinite (FePO{sub 4}), iron hydrogen phosphate hydrate (Fe{sub 3}H{sub 15}(PO{sub 4}){sub 8·}4H{sub 2}O), ferrowyllieite (AlFe{sub 2}Na{sub 2}(PO{sub 4}){sub 3}) and sodium iron phosphate (Na{sub 3}Fe{sub 2}(PO{sub 4}){sub 3}) arising from the alteration of iron minerals in an acidic medium, confirmed by Mössbauer spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy.

On the use of limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) in high-strength strain-hardening cement-based composites (HS-SHCC)

Highlights: • Use of LC{sup 3} slightly reduces flowability and shortens the setting time of fresh matrices. • Highly polymerized C-A-S-H gel and abundant ettringite benefit flexural strength of LC{sup 3}-matrices. • Use of LC{sup 3} enhances the bond strength between fiber and high-strength matrix. • LC{sup 3}-based HS-SHCC yields similar flexural performance as the composite with Portland cement. High-strength strain-hardening cement-based composites (HS-SHCC) demonstrate excellent mechanical and durability properties. However, high cement content typical to HS-SHCC results not only in high carbon footprint, but also in excessive hydration heat and severe autogenous shrinkage. In this investigation, Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC{sup 3}) was used to produce sustainable HS-SHCC. The LC{sup 3} substitution resulted in higher energy consumption during mixing and in shorter setting times of the fresh, plain matrices. Although the LC{sup 3} substitution slightly reduced the compressive strength, the formation of highly polymerized C-A-S-H gel and abundant ettringite benefited the flexural strength of the plain matrices. Additionally, single-fiber pullout experiments showed that the use of LC{sup 3} led to increased fiber-matrix bond strength and pullout energy. Finally, the replacement of Portland cement by LC{sup 3} resulted in HS-SHCC with similar mechanical performance to the reference composite, indicating a high potential for using LC{sup 3} in high-performance cement-based composites.

Strength-promoting mechanism of alkanolamines on limestone-calcined clay cement and the role of sulfate

This paper reports the strength-promoting mechanism of alkanolamines on limestone-calcined clay cement (LC{sup 3}). The hydration kinetics, phase formation and microstructure of LC{sup 3} with triethanolamine (TEA) or triisopropanolamine (TIPA) were investigated. TEA enhanced the strength of LC{sup 3}, while TIPA was effective at 28 days, and a correct sulfate addition promoted their effects. Alkanolamines accelerated the aluminate reaction of LC{sup 3} during early hydration, increased sulfate slowed this reaction by producing more ettringite. TIPA favoured the hydration of ferrite in clinker, not only accelerated the silicate reaction of metakaolin, but also resulted in a rapid limestone reaction. Alkanolamines altered the morphology and chemical composition of the aluminate hydrates and C-A-S-H. Alkanolamines enabled the reduction of porosity of hardened pastes and the increased sulfate further refined them. It was the large pores being induced by TIPA at early ages that were considered to have an adverse impact on the early strength of LC{sup 3}.

3D printing of calcined clay-limestone-based cementitious materials

This paper aims to investigate the influences of high Portland cement substitutions (>60 wt%) by low-grade calcined clay (CC) and limestone (LF) on 3D concrete printability, stiffness evolution and early-age hydration. Results show that, with the same dosage of admixtures (superplasticizer and viscosity modifier), increasing LF and CC content reduced the slump, flowability and initial material flow rate, and significantly improved the buildability of fresh mixtures, which can be attributed to the reduced water film thickness (WFT). Furthermore, the stiffness evolution and SSA{sub total} development up to the first 3 h were accelerated by increasing CC content, which can also be linked to the change of WFT, and consumption of superplasticizer for the dispersion induced by hydration products. Additionally, the dilution effect on compressive strength and hydration caused by the high cement replacement was observed.

Limestone calcined clay cement and concrete: A state-of-the-art review

This article reviews the rapidly developing state-of-the-art literature available on the subject of the recently developed limestone calcined clay cement (LC{sup 3}). An introduction to the background leading to the development of LC{sup 3} is first discussed. The chemistry of LC{sup 3} hydration and its production are detailed. The influence of the properties of the raw materials and production conditions are discussed. The mixture design of concrete using LC{sup 3} and the mechanical and durability properties of LC{sup 3} cement and concrete are then compared with other cements. At the end the economic and environmental aspects of the production and use of LC{sup 3} are discussed. The paper ends with suggestions on subjects on which further research is required.
