Kinetics and Mechanism of Tetravalent Cerium Extraction by Di-2-Ethylhexyl Isobutyramide (DEHiBA)

DEHiBA is a fully-incinerable, CHON extractant with a high selectivity for hexavalent actinides. However, as a recently-developed ligand, much remains unknown about its physical and chemical properties, including its extraction and phase disengagement rates. Here, we present data on the phase transfer kinetics of Ce(IV) extraction and stripping by both DEHiBA and TBP collected using microfluidic devices. Ce(IV) was selected as a surrogate for Pu(IV) and Np(IV) in the initial tests of the microfluidics system prior to testing with the actinides. Pseudo first-order reaction rate constants are determined for both systems, and the corresponding Damköhler numbers (Da) are calculated to establish whether the extraction and stripping processes are kinetically or diffusion controlled. The stoichiometry of the extracted Ce(IV)-DEHiBA complex is determined, and the phase disengagement properties under extraction conditions are assessed using the dimensionless dispersion number. A possible explanation for the favorable extraction of Ce(IV) by DEHiBA, which is known to poorly extract many tetravalent cations, is presented.

Metallic Coating of Cerium Oxide Microspheres

The ability to remove heat is paramount to nuclear fuel performance and longevity. Retaining fission product and separating fuel from reactor coolant and the environment is also necessary to prevent radiological contamination. Conventional nuclear fuel for commercial light water reactors and radioisotope power systems (RPS) is composed of oxide powders pressed into a pellet (cm-scale) and then sealed into a metal cladding to confine the fuel. What typical fuels lack is a method to surround each particle of nuclear fuel in metal, thus providing a more intimate protection layer for accident tolerance and boosting the thermal extraction from the fuel element. In such a way, metal-coated fuel particles increase heat extraction efficiency over clad-pellet designs while increasing the accident tolerance of the fuel. Metal oxide microspheres have wide-ranging applications, including the realm of fuels for nuclear reactors and RPS. Microspheres of uranium oxide/uranium carbide, mixed uranium/plutonium oxides, transuranics, and thorium fuels have been extensively studied. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has also demonstrated the production of 238 PuO 2 microspheres for RPS applications. Metal-coated oxide microsphere fuels may also be attractive for other applications such as nuclear thermal rockets, future nuclear reactor designs, and catalysts.

A Solid State Ultraviolet Lasers Based on Cerium-Doped LiCaAIF(sub 6) Crystal Resonator

We report the first demonstration of a UV laser using a high-Q whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonator of Ce+: LiCaAlF6. We show that WGM resonators from LiCaAlF6 can achieve a Q of 2.6 x 10(sup 7) at UV. We demonstrated a UV laser at 290 nm with a pulsed pump laser at 266 nm. The experiments showed the low pump threshold intensity of 7.5 x 10(sup 9) W/m(sup 2) and slope efficiency of 25%. We have also observed lasing delay dynamics. These results are consistent with our modeling and theoretical estimates, and pave the way for a low threshold cw UV laser using WGM resonator cavity.

Studying Cerium Oxide and Uranium Oxide Using Particle Attached Microelectrodes

The conference proceeding presents results of CeO2 and UO2 particles as microelectrodes enclosed in the SALVI E-cell developed in Dr. Yu's lab. These microfluidic cells can be used to study spent fuel materials in minute amount. They offer a flexible and economic way to understand spent fuel oxidation and dissolution in waste storage conditions.
