Flash Communication: Boron K-edge XAS and TDDFT Studies of Covalent Metal–Ligand Bonding in Ni(C 2 B 9 H 11 ) 2

Ligand K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), a technique that can measure variations in covalent metal–ligand bonding, has rarely been used to assess covalency in complexes containing metal–boron bonds. Here we describe ligand K-edge XAS and TDDFT studies of the Ni dicarbollide complex Ni(C 2 B 9 H 11 ) 2 (1) and the Ni-free salt (HNMe 3 )(C 2 B 9 H 12 ) (L1). The XAS spectrum for 1 reveals a pre-edge feature indicative of covalent Ni–B bonding, which is corroborated by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations and comparative analysis to L1 and inner-shell electron energy loss spectroscopy (ISEELS) collected on the same Ni complex.

Targeted synthesis and reaction mechanism discussion of Mo 2 C based insertion-type electrodes for advanced pseudocapacitors

Mo 2 C is one of the few compounds that possess good electronic conductivity. Meanwhile, it possesses a natural 1D zigzag tunnel structure that is ideally suited for fast ion diffusion. Here, an effective approach is demonstrated for fabrication of structurally stable N-doped Mo 2 C/C nanobelts. They demonstrate high and fast energy storage ability with initial capacitances of 1139 C g -1 at 1 mV s-1, 151 C g -1 at an extremely high scan rate of 2000 mV s -1 and 208 C g -1 at a discharge current density of 200 A g -1 . After electrochemical activation of cycling, the capacity is continuously enhanced and much higher capacitances of 2523 C g -1 at 1 mV s -1 and 1403 C g -1 at 50 A g -1 are achieved after 15,000 cycles at 50 mV s -1 . Using the power law, it is evaluated that a surface-controlled capacitive process makes the main contribution to the capacity, which is over 90% when the scan rates are higher than 10 mV s -1 and still high as 73% at 1 mV s -1 . From in situ synchrotron XRD, it is found that there is a negligible change in the crystal structure and volume during charging/discharging, reflecting an insertion-type charge storage mechanism.

Search for e + e − → φ χ c 0 and φ η c 2 ( 1 D ) at center-of-mass energies from 4.47 to 4.95 GeV

Utilizing a dataset of 6.7 fb − 1 from electron-positron collisions recorded by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, a search is conducted for the processes e + e − → ϕ χ c 0 and ϕ η c 2 ( 1 D ) across center-of-mass energies from 4.47 to 4.95 GeV. In the absence of any significant signals, upper limits are set. These include limits on the dressed cross sections for e + e − → ϕ χ c 0 , as well as the product of the dressed cross section for e + e − → ϕ η c 2 ( 1 D ) and a sum of five branching fractions. Furthermore, the product of the electronic width of Y ( 4660 ) and the branching fraction of the Y ( 4660 ) → ϕ χ c 0 , denoted as Γ e + e − Y ( 4660 ) B Y ( 4660 ) → ϕ χ c 0 , is determined to be < 0.35 eV at the 90% confidence level. Influence of Disorder on the Electronic Properties and Magnetotransport of Ti 3 C 2 T x Single-Flake Devices

The exploration of MXenes for electronic applications is a rapidly growing field in materials science. However, most research has focused on MXene films, with only a limited number of studies addressing the characterization of single-flake devices. In this work, we investigate the electronic and magnetotransport properties of Ti 3 C 2 T x single-flake devices, exploring the influence of structural defectivity on their transport mechanisms. We show that negative magnetoresistance present at low temperatures in single flake samples arises from weak localization, which we analyze to extract the phase coherence length of single-layer and multi-layer flakes. The study of magnetoresistance for this metallic MXene shows that the material exhibits quantum transport phenomena when intrinsic electronic behavior dominates. Moreover, by increasing the defect density via thermal annealing in ultrahigh vacuum, we uncover and characterize the metal-to-disordered metal transition in Ti 3 C 2 T x , shedding light on new properties and enriching fundamental knowledge about MXenes.

Intercalation-Induced Reversible Electrochromic Behavior of Two-Dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene in Organic Electrolytes

MXenes, a large family of two-dimensional materials, have attracted tremendous attention due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Reversible ion intercalation between MXene layers allows modification of the optical, thermal, magnetic, and chemical properties. The electrochemical charge/discharge of MXenes in aqueous electrolytes was reported to lead to reversible electrochromic behavior. In this work, the electrochromic effect of semitransparent Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene film was probed by electrochemical intercalation of Li ions. Correspondingly, a peak shift of 100 nm was observed in the UV-vis spectrum. By combining in-situ Raman spectroscopy, in-situ X-ray diffraction, and density functional theory calculations, we show that the electrochromic shift is primarily due to the formation of robust O-Li bonds and the emerging bands induced changes of inter-band excitations. Finally, understanding the mechanism of electrochromic behavior in Ti 3 C 2 T x lays the foundations of designating 2D materials with durable, controllable, and efficient intercalation-induced electrochromic behaviors.

Aera-Mip: Emission Pathways, Remaining Budgets, and Carbon Cycle Dynamics Compatible With 1.5 and 2 °C Global Warming Stabilization

While international climate policies now focus on limiting global warming to well below 2 °C or pursuing a 1.5 °C level of global warming, the climate modelling community has not provided an experimental design in which all Earth system models (ESMs) converge and stabilize at the same prescribed global warming levels. This gap hampers accurate estimations based on comprehensive ESMs of the carbon emission pathways and budgets needed to meet such agreed warming levels and of the associated climate impacts under temperature stabilization. Here, we apply the Adaptive Emission Reduction Approach (AERA) with ESMs to provide such simulations in which all models converge at 1.5 and 2.0 °C warming levels by adjusting their emissions over time. These emission-driven simulations provide a wide range of emission pathways and resulting atmospheric CO 2 projections for a given warming level, uncovering uncertainty ranges that were previously missing in the traditional Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) scenarios with prescribed greenhouse gas concentration pathways. Meeting the 1.5 °C warming level requires a 40 % (full model range: 7 % to 76 %) reduction in multi-model mean CO 2 -forcing-equivalent (CO 2 -fe) emissions from 2025 to 2030, a 98 % (57 % to 127 %) reduction from 2025 to 2050, and a stabilization at 1.0 (−1.7 to 2.9) PgC yr−1 from 2100 onward after the 1.5 °C global warming level is reached. Meeting the 2.0 °C warming level requires a 47 % (8 % to 92 %) reduction in multi-model mean CO 2 -fe emissions until 2050 and a stabilization at 1.7 (−1.5 to 2.7) PgC yr−1 from 2100 onward. The on-average positive emissions under stabilized global temperatures are the result of a decreasing transient climate response to cumulative CO 2 -fe emissions over time under stabilized global warming. This evolution is consistent with a slightly negative zero emissions commitment – initially assumed to be zero – and leads to an increase in the post-2025 CO 2 -fe emission budget by a factor of 2.2 (−0.8 to 6.9) by 2150 for the 1.5 °C warming level and a factor of 1.4 (0.9 to 2.4) for the 2.0 °C warming level compared to its first estimate in 2025. The median CO 2 -only carbon budget by 2150, relative to 2020, is 800 GtCO 2 for the 1.5 °C warming level and 2250 GtCO 2 for the 2.0 °C warming level. These median values exceed the median IPCC AR6 estimates by 60 % for the 1.5 °C warming level and 67 % for 2.0 °C. Some of the differences may be explained by the choice of the mitigation scenario for non-CO 2 radiative agents. Our simulations highlight shifts in carbon uptake dynamics under stabilized temperature, such as a cessation of the carbon sinks in the North Atlantic and in tropical forests. On the other hand, the Southern Ocean remains a carbon sink centuries after temperatures stabilize. Overall, this new type of warming-level-based emission-driven simulation offers a more coherent assessment across climate models and opens up a wide range of possibilities for studying both the carbon cycle and climate impacts, such as extreme events, under climate stabilization.

Photoionization of endohedral molecules: N 2 @C 60

Calculations of the photoionization of the nitrogen $1σ_g$, $1σ_u$, and $2σ_g$, states of the N 2 @C 60 molecule are performed at the density functional theory (DFT) level taking full account of the molecular geometry of both N 2 and the C 60 . In this work, the results show that cross sections are sensitive to the parity of the final channels, with a complex interplay between the native $σ_u$ resonance in free N 2 and confinement resonances. A quite different behavior is obtained for the asymmetry parameters.

Vibrational Quantum-State-Controlled Reactivity in the O 2 + + C 3 H 4 Reaction

Quantum-state-controlled reactivity is a long-standing goal in the field of physical chemistry. In this work, we explore the vibrational-state-dependent behavior of the ion–molecule reaction between O 2 + in distinct vibrational states and two isomers of C 3 H 4 , allene (H 2 C 3 H 2 ) and propyne (H 3 C 3 H). While most products are formed regardless of the vibrational state of O 2 + , the branching ratios are influenced by vibrational excitation, and a new product, C 2 O + , appears exclusively in the excited-state reactions. This selective formation of C 2 O + demonstrates that vibrational excitation can effectively activate a reaction pathway, providing direct evidence of quantum-state control in the reactivity. These results represent an important step toward the goal of quantum-state-controlled chemistry in molecular systems.

Maximizing ion dynamics and electrochemical performance of ionic liquid-acetonitrile electrolyte in Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene

Modification of the structure and morphology of MXene electrodes and the formulation of the electrolytes used in their supercapacitor configurations are significant factors affecting the performance of electrochemical devices. In this study, we investigated the electrochemical performance and ion dynamics of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [EmimTFSI], ionic liquid in the presence of acetonitrile (ACN) at different concentrations in Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene supercapacitor. We found an optimum concentration of ACN, at which more cations from the ionic liquid attach to the MXene electrode surface, providing higher electrochemical performance. This higher capacitance is also associated with increased microscopic dynamics of the cation away from the pore wall. These findings give a guideline to optimize the performance of MXene-based supercapacitors using organic solvents-ionic liquid-based electrolyte systems.

NO x adsorption with CO and C 2 H 4 on Pd/SSZ-13: Experiments and modeling

A transient monolith model containing microkinetic schemes for NO uptake and release over Pd/SSZ-13 without and with reductants CO or C2H4 is presented. The scheme involves three cationic Pd species (Z – [PdOH] + , Z – Pd 2+ Z – , Z – Pd + ) as the active sites during uptake of NO, CO and C 2 H 4 , and their desorption and conversion at higher temperature. Kinetic parameters are estimated through a combination of density functional theory (DFT) estimates and a fit of uptake, desorption and conversion data. The tuned model is validated at different uptake temperatures, ramp rates, and flowrates. A “degree of uptake control” parameter is defined that helps to identify the step(s) that are uptake controlling. The model helps to interpret the data features and is used to identify operating conditions to meet application-relevant performance metrics, including NO trapping efficiency and NO release temperature. Furthermore, the model demonstrates higher NO uptake on Pd/SSZ-13 compared to Pd/ZSM-5.

Neutron Diffraction Study of Significant sp 3 and sp 2 C–H Bond Shortening in a Fluorinated Pyridinium Saccharinate

Here we have experimentally shown by neutron diffraction significant shortening of both $sp^3$- and $sp^2$-hybridized C–H bonds to 1.092(2) and 1.081(1) Å in a hydrogen-bonded crystal of a difluorinated compound, 4-((2,2-difluoroethoxy)methyl)pyridinium saccharinate. Both MP2 and DFT calculations affirmed the C–H bond shrinkages. Sanderson’s electronegativity equalization principle provides insight into the shortening of the C–H covalent bond lengths for both $sp^3$- and $sp^2$-hybridized carbon atoms. To the best of our knowledge, this neutron diffraction study has revealed the largest extents of $sp^3$ and $sp^2$ C–H bond shrinkages with a 3-sigma rule being satisfied.
