Synthesis of [(3,4,5‐F 3 C 6 H 2 )(4‐ n BuC 6 H 4 ) 2 C][HCB 11 Cl 11 ]: A Much More Soluble Version of the Trityl Cation with Slightly Higher Lewis Acidity

A new triarylmethyl cation (*Tr + ), designed to closely mimic Ph 3 C + in reactivity, has been prepared as a [HCB 11 Cl 11 ] − salt. *Tr + very slightly exceeds the Lewis acidity of Ph 3 C + in chloride and hydride transfer reactions, but possesses two orders of magnitude higher solubility in organic solvents of low polarity.

Reactions of U(DMSO) 8 (ClO 4 ) 4 with Terpyridine Yield Dimeric Hydrolysis Products and Induce C–C Coupling

Reactions have been carried out using UIV(DMSO) 8 (ClO 4 ) 4 with 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine (terpy) under nonaqueous conditions. At room temperature in acetonitrile, the combination of the U(IV) starting material with terpy resulted in a mixture containing [UO 2 (DMSO) 2 terpy][ClO 4 ] 2 ·MeCN, while increasing the water content led to the hydrolysis products [(UO 2 (DMSO)terpy) 2 (μ 2 –O)][ClO 4 ] 2 and [(UO 2 terpy) 2 (μ 2 –OH) 2 ][ClO 4 ] 2 ·MeCN·H 2 O. Performing the reaction at slightly elevated temperature with no added water led to the formation of [UO 2 sexipyridine][ClO 4 ] 2 ·MeCN. This new uranyl complex contains the hexadentate ligand 2,2′:6′,2″:6″,2″:6‴,2⁗:6⁗,2⁗′-sexipyridine, which formed in situ from the tetravalent uranium starting material, where photoexcited uranyl or in situ generated peroxide could have induced C–C coupling. Analysis of bonding in the dimeric uranyl species via quantum chemical methods revealed a small increase in covalency of the bridging oxo unit and a slightly greater stability compared to the bridging hydroxo compound, which causes a significant shift in the uranyl symmetric stretch in the Raman spectrum. Structural, spectroscopic, and computational comparisons are made across the series of compounds, providing insight into the bonding and reactivity of uranium in nonaqueous media.

Improved Accuracy in Semi-Experimental Structure Determination by Resolving Problems Associated with Rotation of Principal Inertial Axes of Isotopologues: Structures of 1,3-Oxazole ( c -C 3 H 3 NO)

The rotational spectrum of the normal isotopologue of 1,3-oxazole (c-C 3 H 3 NO) was observed from 43 to 750 GHz. Over 3900 transitions for the ground vibrational state are measured, assigned, and least-squares fit to sextic centrifugally distorted-rotor Hamiltonians. The measured frequencies and resulting spectroscopic constants from this extended spectral range, combined with previous measurements of the nuclear quadrupole coupling constants, will facilitate astronomical searches for oxazole across the majority of the range of modern radiotelescopes. Spectra for a set of 30 oxazole isotopologues, which include multiple isotopic substitutions of each atom, are used to determine the first semi-experimental equilibrium ($r$$^{SE}_{e}$) structure and semi-experimental substitution structure ($r$$^{SE}_{e}$), each using CCSD(T) computed values for the vibration–rotation interaction and electron-mass corrections. The large number of isotopologues, including 21 isotopologues observed for the first time, and the redundant substitutions of each atom provide sufficient spectroscopic information to determine the $r$$^{SE}_{e}$ structure with the expected high level of accuracy and precision (0.0001 or 0.0002 Å in bond distances and 0.013 to 0.025° in bond angles). In the course of this study, we analyzed a known issue for some $r$$^{SE}_{e}$ structure determinations of near-oblate asymmetric tops in which inclusion of individual isotopologues degrades the structure determination. We demonstrate that this problem primarily arises from the difference in the values of the computed vibration–rotation interaction corrections as evaluated at the computed re geometry vs the $r$$^{SE}_{e}$ geometry of the “real” molecule. Our solution to this problem substantially improves the $r$$^{SE}_{e}$ structure of oxazole and likely can be generalized to many other molecules.

Mechanism of O 2 /NO-Promoted Oxidative C–C Bond Cleavage in Linear Alkanes

Selective oxidation of alkanes to oxygenated products remains a fundamental challenge, particularly if the goal is to promote C−C bond cleavage while minimizing formation of CO 2 . Oxidation conditions that use O 2 and nitrogen oxides (NO x ) have been shown to be very effective in promoting radical-mediated functionalization and oxidative carbon−carbon cleavage in saturated hydrocarbon polymers, such as polyethylene. Here, we investigate the mechanism of O 2 /NO-mediated oxidation of ndecane as a prototypical linear alkane substrate. These reactions enable identification and quantification of reactive intermediates, including nitrites, nitrates, alcohols, and ketones. Under the reaction conditions, these species convert into common ketone intermediates that evolve into α-diketones and other α-functionalized ketones, which undergo further conversion into carboxylic acids. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy indicates that HDPE oxidation proceeds through similar key intermediates. Together, these findings establish a mechanistic framework for NO x -mediated alkane oxidation and provide a foundation for the development of broadly applicable oxidative transformations.

Charmonium χ c 0 and χ c 2 resonances in coupled-channel scattering from lattice QCD

In order to explore the spectrum of hidden-charm scalar and tensor resonances, we study meson-meson scattering with J P C = 0 + + , 2 + + in the charmonium energy region using lattice QCD. Employing a light-quark mass corresponding to m π ≈ 391 MeV , we determine coupled-channel scattering amplitudes up to around 4100 MeV considering all kinematically relevant channels consisting of a pair of open-charm mesons or a charmonium meson with a light meson. A single isolated scalar resonance near 4000 MeV is found with large couplings to D D ¯ , D s D ¯ s and the kinematically closed D * D ¯ * channel. A single tensor resonance at a similar mass couples strongly to D D ¯ , D D ¯ * and D * D ¯ * . We compare the extracted resonances to contemporary experimental candidate states, previous lattice results and theoretical modeling. In contrast to several other studies, we do not find any significant feature in the scalar amplitudes between the ground state χ c 0 ( 1 P ) and the resonance found around 4000 MeV. Atomization, drop size, and penetration for cross-stream water injection at high-altitude reentry conditions with application to the RAM C-1 and C-3 flights

Atomization, drop size, and penetration data are presented for cross stream water injection at conditions simulating high altitude reentry (low Weber number, high static temperature, high Knudsen number, and low static pressure). These results are applied to the RAM C-1 and C-3 flights. Two primary breakup modes are considered, vapor pressure or flashing and aerodynamic atomization. Results are given for breakup boundaries and mean drop size for each of these atomization mechanisms. Both standard and flight orifice geometries are investigated. The data were obtained in both a static environment and in conventional aerodynamic facilities at Mach numbers of 4.5 and 8. The high temperature aspects of reentry were simulated in a Mach 5.5 cyanogen-oxygen tunnel with total temperature of 4500 K.

Approximate thermochemical tables for some C-H and C-H-O species

Approximate thermochemical tables are presented for some C-H and C-H-O species and for some ionized species, supplementing the JANAF Thermochemical Tables for application to finite-chemical-kinetics calculations. The approximate tables were prepared by interpolation and extrapolation of limited available data, especially by interpolations over chemical families of species. Original estimations have been smoothed by use of a modification for the CDC-6600 computer of the Lewis Research Center PACl Program which was originally prepared for the IBM-7094 computer Summary graphs for various families show reasonably consistent curvefit values, anchored by properties of existing species in the JANAF tables.

Gas-phase hydrogen permeation through alpha iron, 4130 steel, and 304 stainless steel from less than 100 C to near 600 C

Gas phase hydrogen permeation studies were conducted on hollow, cylindrical membranes of triply zone-refined alpha iron, AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel, and AISI-SAE 4130 steel in both the normalized (ferrite and carbide) and quenched and tempered (martensite) conditions. Membrane temperature was varied from less than 100 C to near 600 C and hydrogen pressure was varied. For one membrane material, normalized 4130 steel, gas phase hydrogen transport under both steady state and nonsteady state conditions was demonstrated to be controlled by lattice diffusion. Additionally, Sievert's law was shown to be applicable. For all membrane materials, expressions for the coefficients for hydrogen permeation were determined by analysis of steady state transport; the coefficients for diffusion were determined by the lag time technique applied to nonsteady state transport; and through a knowledge of the Sievert's constants, the subsurface equilibrium lattice hydrogen concentrations were determined.

GEOS-2 C-band radar system project. Marine study using C-band radars

One of the secondary objectives of the GEOS-2 C-band Systems Project is to study the feasibility of using geodetic satellites to both evaluate shipborne instrumentation and to determine ship positions in broad ocean areas. The purpose of this task is to determine whether shipborne C-band radar tracking, in conjunction with ground based tracking, is sufficiently accurate to provide instrumentation evaluation and ship position estimates. Data from several Apollo tracking ships, in particular the USNS Vanguard, was made available for this effort. A series of tests, using the USNS Vanguard, were carried out in the Port Canaveral and Bahama Acoustic Transponder Array Areas. The major portion of the analyses reported are the result of preliminary investigations using the data from these tests.

Development of a hybrid microelectronics solid state relay for 2500 volts isolation and minus 120 C to 80 C thermal cycling range

A hybrid microelectronics solid state relay was developed in a TO-116 package for the MINX project. The relay provides 2500 Vdc input to output isolation and operated from a MHTL logic signal to switch a load of 400 Vdc at 2 mA. The relay is designed to operate in space and survive 1000 thermal cycles of 120 C to 80 C. The use of X-rays for failure analysis in small hybrid circuits proved valuable and the applications of vacuum deposited Parylene as a dielectric coating proved extremely valuable.
