Measurement of Cosmic-Ray Antiproton Spectrum at Solar Minimum with a Long-Duration Balloon Flight in Antarctica

The energy spectrum of cosmic-ray antiprotons (p(raised bar)'s) collected by the BESS-Polar II instrument during a long-duration flight over Antarctica in the solar minimum period of December 2007 through January 2008. The p(raised bar) spectrum measured by BESS-Polar II shows good consistency with secondary p(raised bar) calculations. Cosmologically primary p(raised bar)'s have been searched for by comparing the observed and calculated p(raised bar) spectra. The BESSPolar II result shows no evidence of primary p(raised bar)'s originating from the evaporation of PBH.

Hierarchical Control of Distributed Battery Energy Storage System in a DC Microgrid

This paper presents a novel hierarchical control approach of a DC microgrid (DCMG) which is supplied by a distributed battery energy storage system (BESS). With this approach, all battery units distributed in the BESS can be controlled to discharge with accurate current sharing and state-of-charge (SoC) balancing. Similar to other hierarchical control approaches used in DCMGs, this approach consists of three levels: (1) primary control, (2) secondary control and (3) tertiary control. This work includes defining a unit control error (UCE) at the secondary control level and evaluating current sharing weights at tertiary control level. A centralized controller at secondary control level is designed to detect the UCEs of each battery unit, and to restore the average voltage of a DCMG and control battery current sharing simultaneously. The distributed battery units share the load current in a DCMG based on weights. These weights are evaluated at the tertiary control level based on battery SoCs. The approach’s effectiveness was confirmed in digital simulation tests with the same simulation model as used in the NASA AMPS Modular Hardware Emulator.

A Combined Day-ahead and Real-time approach for Scheduling Real and Reactive power dispatch of Battery Energy Storage System

A combined day-ahead (look-ahead) and real-time optimization approach is proposed to schedule BESS real and reactive power dispatch. The look ahead scheduling agent maximizes profit and essentially performs the function of energy arbitrage by looking at forecasted prices, network constraints and BESS operating conditions to generate real power dispatch schedule. While this schedule is followed, the real time optimization agent computes an optimum reactive power set-point (for a particular objective function) using optimal power flow framework. The concepts are implemented by co-simulating legacy tools and demonstrated on a large real world distribution system. In addition to the profits from energy arbitrage, optimum reactive power set point computation results in achieving desirable network attributes like flat voltage profiles and minimizing voltage deviations from desired value.

Transactive Energy Rationing in an Islanded Electric Power System

A battery energy storage system (BESS) has been installed on Nantucket Island to provide service continuity during the N-1 contingency of partial electricity supply interruption from the mainland. During the N-2 contingency of complete interruption from the mainland, most of the loads will have to be disconnected so that a combustion gas turbine (CTG) can supply critical facilities. This work proposes an alternative transactive rationing mechanism that would provide some service to all of the loads, and still fully serve the critical loads, through market-based control during the N-2 contingency. A BESS operating strategy is proposed that would enhance the transactive rationing mechanism. The necessary enabling changes to communication systems, controls and utility tariffs are discussed, along with some ancillary benefits.

SIW21-95: Hybridizing Synchronous Condensers with Grid-Forming Battery Energy Storage Systems

One of the main challenges associated with deployment of high shares of inverter-based resources (IBRs) in power grid is not only reduced system inertia but also degrading system strength that may cause severe stability impacts. A minimum level of system strength is needed for the power system to remain stable under normal conditions and to return to a steady state condition following a system disturbance. Significant system strength reduction is expected in almost all planned areas for solar and wind generation deployment. Synchronous condensers (SC) have been considered as one main technology to address the system strength issues for the areas with high levels of IBRs. SCs can help improving reliability and resiliency of power system but they do not provide the full range of services needed by power systems for reliable and economic integration of high shares of inverter-coupled variable generation such as PV generation. Services related to active power controls cannot be provided by SCs due to lack of prime mover. Even for provision of reactive power SCs have certain constraints based on their thermal and stability limits. NREL has been conducting research on a hybridized concept that combines SCs with grid forming (GFM) battery energy storage systems (BESS). This super flexible AC transmission system (SuperFACTS) that combines these two technologies in a single plant under the same controller offers a unique scalable set of services to the power system at all levels (transmission, sub-transmission, distribution, islands and isolated microgrids). Depending on use cases, SuperFACTS can be controlled to provide fully dispatchable and flexible operation using energy storage component, provide a full range of existing and future ancillary and reliability services to the grid (similar or better than conventional sources), maintain adequate levels of grid strength and inertia, and provide fault current for proper operation of protection systems. Therefore, this economic and easy to commercialize solution has potential for significant impacts on certain segments of global energy sector. All types of gird services (market based, reliability and resiliency) can be provided by SuperFACTS plants. GFM BESS can act as a self-black start source for each SuperFACTS module, which in turn can act a black start resource for co-located PV and wind power plants, segments of transmission and distribution networks, for conventional power plants, etc. The issue of in-rush currents during black start is addressed by overcurrent capability of SCs. In this paper we describe the results of modeling for SuperFACTS concept.

BESSIE: Battery & Energy Storage Supply Chain Analysis, Mitigation Deployment, and Tools

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) and their associated power electronic interfaces are key components to delivering clean and more resilient energy, providing much-needed fast-ramping, emergency discharge, generation, and operations support to the electric grid. These services have grown to be invaluable over the past ten years and will soon be an irreplaceable element of energy delivery. The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) strives to address these challenges through a strategic approach to supply chain risk assessment and mitigation for BESS and related digital energy equipment through the BESSIE project under the Center for Securing Digital Energy Technology. Recognizing that decreasing dependence on a foreign supply chain will take significant time and investment, BESSIE’s focus is strategically addressing battery supply chain risks by pairing short-term steps to operate securely through today’s risks with long-term steps to shape the supply chain over the coming years.

Hybrid Powered Command Trailers Cost-Benefit Analysis Tool: User Guide and Examples

U.S. Forest Service (USFS) wildfire base camps use portable power for electrical needs, including yurts and trailers from which logistics staff work during the incident. These yurts and trailers are conventionally powered by portable diesel generators. Hybrid portable power systems consisting of a combination of solar photovoltaics (PV), battery energy storage systems (BESS), and/or backup diesel generators have been used in recent years and were piloted by the National Technology and Development Program (NTDP) on incidents in fall 2024 as part of NTDP's Portable Power Project. As part of that project, this work included the development of two Excel-based tools and two reports explaining the tools. The first tool, the Incident Energy Systems Model, is an Excel-based tool that models the power output of hybrid portable power systems powering yurts and/or trailers at fire camps over a typical day. The associated report (published separately) outlines a user guide for the model and walks through two scenarios. The two scenarios are 1) trailers powered by rooftop solar PV, batteries, and a back-up diesel generator, and 2) trailers powered by ground mount solar PV, batteries, and a back-up diesel generator. The second tool is a high-level cost-benefit analysis of the same two types of portable power systems, and is location independent.

Cyber-Informed Engineering Requirements Framework Use Cases

The requirement analysis use case effort leverages the Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE) requirements framework to examine two real-world scenarios: Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) installation at the Flatirons Campus, NLR; SCADA improvement program. This work evaluates the existing requirements for each use case, applies the CIE requirements framework, and assesses the benefits and enhancements gained compared to the current requirements. The results will advance CIE from concept to practical application by identifying key opportunities for integrating CIE principles into established engineering workflows during the requirements phase.

Time and space spectra of earth-emitted radiation at large scales

Several earth radiation instruments have been flown on spacecraft. The most recent of these instruments has been the Earth Radiation Budget (ERB) instrument aboard the Nimbus 6 and Nimbus 7 spacecraft. The ERB instrument includes two earth-viewing wide-field-of-view (WFOV) radiometers one of which measures total irradiance and the other measures shortwave (SW) irradiances. he difference between the two irradiances is the longwave (LW) or earth-emitted irradiance. The ERB instrument has been providing WFOV measurements since July 1975. These WFOV data are suitable for studying large-scale processes over spatial scales of thousands of kilometers. The present investigation is concerned with a study of the annual cycle of the distribution of the earth's LW radiation. This study is based on one year of WFOV data, from July 1975 through June 1976. The present investigation is an extension of the study by Bess and Smith (1979).
