Searching for axions with kaon decay at rest

We describe a novel search strategy for axions (or hadronically coupled axionlike particles) in the mass range of m a ≲350 MeV. The search relies on kaon decay at rest, which produces a monoenergetic signal in a large volume detector (e.g., a tank of liquid scintillator) from axion decays a → γγ or a → e + ⁢e – . The decay modes K + → π + ⁢a and a → γγ are induced by the axion’s coupling to gluons, which is generic to any model which addresses the strong CP problem. We recast a recent search from MicroBooNE for e +⁢ e – pairs and study prospects at JSNS 2 and other near-term facilities. We find that JSNS 2 will have world-leading sensitivity to hadronically coupled axions in the mass range of 40 MeV ≲ m a ≲ 350 MeV.

Axionic dark matter halos in the gravitational field of baryonic matter

We consider a dark matter halo (DMH) of a spherical galaxy as a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) of the ultra-light axions (ULA) interacting with the baryonic matter. In the mean-field (MF) limit, we have derived the integro-differential equation of the Hartree–Fock type for the spherically symmetrical wave function of the DMH component. This equation includes two independent dimensionless parameters: (i) β is the ratio of baryon and axion total mases and (ii) ξ is the ratio of characteristic baryon and axion spatial parameters. We extended our “dissipation algorithm” for studying numerically the ground state of the axion halo in the gravitational field produced by the baryonic component. We calculated the characteristic size, x c of DMH as a function of β and ξ and obtained an analytical approximation for x c .

Focusing Optics for Axion Detection: Simulating Sensing Enhancements of Photons in InfraBREAD

The Broadband Reflector Experiment for Axion Detection (BREAD) will search for axions, a promising particle candidate for dark matter, in the high mass range of [$10^{-3}$,1]eV. BREAD acts like a telescope for dark matter, using a parabolic reflector to direct axion-induced photons onto a precise focal spot. InfraBREAD is the experimental version designed to detect photons resulting from axions with infrared frequency using a 1mm × 1mm Superconducting Nanowire Singe Photon Detector (SNSPD). However, at this frequency scale two problems arise: 1) the focal spot becomes smeared across an area larger than the size of the SNSPD detector; 2) any millimeter-scale misalignment shifts in the SNSPD can greatly diminish photon signal. This study performed simulations of novel optical configurations of lenses and reflectors placed around the SNSPD to achieve a greater efficiency than the SNSPD alone through both of these effects. One optical setup was identified called the “Parabolo id to Winston Cone (PTW) Configuration,” which exploits the optics of parabolic reflectors to focus incoming photons from the larger area of the smeared focal spot onto the smaller 1mm 2 area of the detector. The PTW configuration demonstrated overall improvements in efficiency by around 10% through misalignment shifts, with a maximal improvement of 55% in one region.

Axion searches with two superconducting radio-frequency cavities

We propose an experimental setup to search for Axion-like particles (ALPs) using two superconducting radio-frequency cavities. In this light-shining-through-wall setup the axion is sourced by two modes with large fields and nonzero $_E^→$∙$_B^→$ in an emitter cavity. In a nearby identical cavity only one of these modes, the spectator, is populated while the other is a quiet signal mode. Axions can up-convert off the spectator mode into signal photons. We discuss the physics reach of this setup finding potential to explore new ALP parameter space. Enhanced sensitivity can be achieved if high-level modes can be used, thanks to improved phase matching between the excited modes and the generated axion field. We also discuss the potential leakage noise effects and their mitigation, which is aided by O(GHz) separation between the spectator and signal frequencies.

A robust search for lepton flavour violating axions at Mu3e

We propose a search at Mu3e for lepton flavor violating axion(-like) particles in μ → 3e + a decays. By requiring an additional e+e− pair from internal conversion, one can circumvent the calibration challenges which plague the μ → e + a channel for axions lighter than 20 MeV. Crucially, the corresponding reduction in signal rate is to a large extent compensated for by Mu3e’s ability to resolve highly collimated tracks. For phase I of Mu3e, we project a sensitivity to decay constants as high as 6 × 109 GeV which probes uncharted parameter space in scenarios of axion dark matter. The sensitivity to axions which couple primarily to right-handed leptons can be further improved by leveraging the polarisation of the muon beam.

Gravitational wave and CMB probes of axion kination

Rotations of an axion field in field space provide a natural origin for an era of kination domination, where the energy density is dominated by the kinetic term of the axion field, preceded by an early era of matter domination. Remarkably, no entropy is produced at the end of matter domination and hence these eras of matter and kination domination may occur even after Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We derive constraints on these eras from both the cosmic microwave background and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We investigate how this cosmological scenario affects the spectrum of possible primordial gravitational waves and find that the spectrum features a triangular peak. We discuss how future observations of gravitational waves can probe the viable parameter space, including regions that produce axion dark matter by the kinetic misalignment mechanism or the baryon asymmetry by axiogenesis. For QCD axion dark matter produced by the kinetic misalignment mechanism, a modification to the inflationary gravitational wave spectrum occurs above 0.01 Hz and, for high values of the energy scale of inflation, the prospects for discovery are good. We briefly comment on implications for structure formation of the universe.

Analytical estimation of the signal to noise ratio efficiency in axion dark matter searches using a Savitzky-Golay filter

The signal to noise ratio efficiency ϵ SNR in axion dark matter searches has been estimated using large-statistic simulation data reflecting the background information and the expected axion signal power obtained from a real experiment. This usually requires a lot of computing time even with the assistance of powerful computing resources. Employing a Savitzky-Golay filter for background subtraction, in this work, we estimated a fully analytical ϵ SNR without relying on large-statistic simulation data, but only with an arbitrary axion mass and the relevant signal shape information. Hence, our work can provide ϵ SNR using minimal computing time and resources prior to the acquisition of experimental data, without the detailed information that has to be obtained from real experiments. Axion haloscope searches have been observing the coincidence that the frequency independent scale factor ξ is approximately consistent with the ϵ SNR . This was confirmed analytically in this work, when the window length of the Savitzky-Golay filter is reasonably wide enough, i.e., at least 5 times the signal window.

Resurrecting low-mass axion dark matter via a dynamical QCD scale

In the framework where the strong coupling is dynamical, the QCD sector may confine at a much higher temperature than it would in the Standard Model, and the temperature-dependent mass of the QCD axion evolves in a non-trivial way. We find that, depending on the evolution of Λ QCD , the axion field may undergo multiple distinct phases of damping and oscillation leading generically to a suppression of its relic abundance. Such a suppression could therefore open up a wide range of parameter space, resurrecting in particular axion dark-matter models with a large Peccei-Quinn scale f a $\gg$ 10 12 GeV, i.e., with a lighter mass than the standard QCD axion.

New inflationary probes of axion dark matter

Abstract If a light axion is present during inflation and becomes part of dark matter afterwards, its quantum fluctuations contribute to dark matter isocurvature. In this article, we introduce a whole new suite of cosmological observables for axion isocurvature, which could help test the presence of axions, as well as its coupling to the inflaton and other heavy spectator fields during inflation such as the radial mode of the Peccei-Quinn field. They include correlated clock signals in the curvature and isocurvature spectra, and mixed cosmological-collider non-Gaussianities involving both curvature and isocurvature fluctuations with shapes and running unconstrained by the current data analyses. Taking into account of the existing strong constraints on axion isocurvature fluctuations from the CMB, these novel signals could still be sizable and potentially observable. In some models, the signals, if observed, could even help us significantly narrow down the range of the inflationary Hubble scale, a crucial parameter difficult to be determined in general, independent of the tensor mode.

Constraints on axion-like dark matter from a SERF comagnetometer

Ultralight axion-like particles are well-motivated relics that might compose the cosmological dark matter and source anomalous time-dependent magnetic fields. We report on terrestrial bounds from the Noble And Alkali Spin Detectors for Ultralight Coherent darK matter (NASDUCK) collaboration on the coupling of axion-like particles to neutrons and protons. The detector uses nuclei of noble-gas and alkali-metal atoms and operates in the Spin-Exchange Relaxation-Free (SERF) regime, achieving high sensitivity to axion-like dark matter fields. Conducting a month-long search, we cover the mass range of 1.4 × 10 -12 eV/c 2 to 2 × 10 -10 eV/c 2 and provide limits which supersede robust astrophysical bounds, and improve upon previous terrestrial constraints by over two orders of magnitude for many masses within this range for protons, and up to two orders of magnitude for neutrons. These are the sole reliable terrestrial bounds reported on the coupling of protons with axion-like dark matter, covering an unexplored terrain in its parameter space.

Large-volume centimeter-wave cavities for axion searches

The scan rate of an axion haloscope is proportional to the square of the cavity volume. In this paper, a new class of thin-shell cavities are proposed to search for axionic dark matter. These cavities feature active volume much larger (>20×) than that of a conventional cylindrical haloscope, comparable quality factor Q, and a similar frequency tuning range. Furthermore, full 3D numerical finite-element analyses have been used to show that the TM 010 eigenmodes are singly polarized throughout the volume of the cavity and can facilitate axion-photon conversion in uniform magnetic field produced by a superconducting solenoid. To mitigate spurious mode crowding and volume losses due to localization, a pre-amplification binary summing network will be used for coupling. Because of the favorable frequency-scaling, the new cavities are most suitable for centimeter-wavelength (~ 10–100 GHz), corresponding to the promising post-inflation axion production window. In this frequency range, the tight machining tolerances required for high-Q thin-shell cavities are achievable with standard machining techniques for near-infrared mirrors.

Constraints on early dark energy from the axion weak gravity conjecture

A popular proposal for resolving the Hubble tension involves an early phase of dark energy, driven by an axion field with a periodic potential. Here, in this paper, we argue that these models are tightly constrained by the axion weak gravity conjecture: for typical parameter values, the axion decay constant must satisfy f < 0.008,M Pl , which is smaller than the axion decay constants appearing in the vast majority of early dark energy models to date. We discuss possible ways to evade or loosen this constraint, arguing that its loopholes are small and difficult to thread. This suggests that it may prove challenging to realize early dark energy models in a UV complete theory of quantum gravity.

Multiple axions save high-scale inflation

Many models of dark matter QCD axion require inflation at a scale H inf ≲ 10 6 GeV ,which precludes a detectable tensor mode fluctuation. This constraint arises because the domain wall problem forces the Peccei-Quinn symmetry to be broken during inflation and the axions to be produced by the misalignment mechanism. Here, we point out that theories with multiple axions can evade this constraint, thereby allowing high-scale inflation with detectable tensor mode. The only requirement is a condition on the anomaly coefficients that ensures a unique minimum of the axion potential without fine-tuning or the introduction of small parameters.

Search for Postinflationary QCD Axions with a Quantum-Limited Tunable Microwave Receiver

A search for cosmological axions has been performed by scanning a frequency region of 38 MHz centered at about 10.2 GHz, corresponding to an axion mass 𝑚 𝑎 ≃ 42 μ ⁢eV. The QUAX experimental apparatus, a haloscope comprised of a 1-liter volume tunable cavity immersed in an 8 T magnetic field and a quantum-limited detection chain, set limits on the axion-photon coupling at the 10 −14 GeV −1 level. As no signal candidate has been observed, viable hadronic axion models are ruled out in a currently preferred postinflationary region 𝑚 𝑎 > 40 μ ⁢eV.

Updated cosmological constraints on axion dark energy with DESI

Here, we present updated constraints on the parameters of an axion dark energy model, for which we took into account the properties of its characteristic potential and its full cosmological evolution. We show that the values of the axion parameters appear sufficiently constrained by the data, including the latest DESI DR1, and are consistent with the theoretical expectations of a field mass 𝑚 𝑎 in the ultralight regime log⁡(𝑚 𝑎 ⁢𝑐 2 /eV) ≃ −32.60 ±0.12, and an effective energy scale 𝑓 𝑎 close to the reduced Planck energy log⁡(𝑓 𝑎 ⁡/𝑀 Pl ) ≃ −0.28 ± 0.19. Our results also support the idea of dynamical dark energy, although Bayesian evidence still favors the phenomenological dark energy model 𝑤 0 ⁢𝑤 𝑎 over the axion dark energy, with the Bayes factor indicating moderate and weak strength of the evidence, respectively, when the models are compared to the cosmological constant Λ. However, the results suggest that axion dark energy remains a well-motivated model and its parameters may be better constrained if the upcoming DESI data show further evidence for dynamical dark energy.

A Continuous Galactic Line Source of Axions: The Remarkable Case of 23 Na

Here, we argue that $^{23}$Na is a potentially significant source of galactic axions. For temperatures $\gtrsim 7 \times 10^8$K -- characteristic of carbon burning in the massive progenitors of supernovae and ONeMg white dwarfs -- the 440 keV first excited state of $^{23}$Na is thermally populated, with its repeated decays pumping stellar energy into escaping axions. Odd-A nuclear abundances are typically very low in high-temperature stellar environments (or absent entirely due to burn-up). $^{23}$Na is an exception: $\approx 0.1 M_\odot$ of the isotope is synthesized during carbon burning then maintained at $\approx 10^9$K for times ranging up to $6 \times 10^4$y. Using MESA simulations, a galactic model, and sampling over progenitor masses, locations, and evolutionary stages, we find a continuous flux at earth of $\langle ϕ_a \rangle \approx 22$/cm$^2$s for $g^\mathrm{eff}_{aNN} = 10^{-9}$. Some fraction of these axions convert to photons as they propagate through the galactic magnetic field, producing a distinctive 440 keV line $γ$ ray detectable by all-sky detectors like the Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI). Assuming a 1$μ$G galactic magnetic field and a sufficiently light axion mass, we find that COSI will be able to probe $| g_{aNN}^\mathrm{eff} g_{a γγ} | \gtrsim1.8 \times 10^{-22}$ GeV$^{-1}$ at $3σ$ after two years of surveying.

Axion baryogenesis puts a new spin on the Hubble tension

We show that a rotating axion field that makes a transition from a matterlike equation of state to a kinationlike equation of state around the epoch of recombination can significantly ameliorate the Hubble tension, i.e., the discrepancy between the determinations of the present-day expansion rate H 0 from observations of the cosmic microwave background on one hand and type Ia supernovae on the other. We consider a specific, UV-complete model of such a rotating axion and find that it can relax the Hubble tension without exacerbating tensions in determinations of other cosmological parameters, in particular the amplitude of matter fluctuations S 8 . We subsequently demonstrate how this rotating axion model can also generate the baryon asymmetry of our Universe, by introducing a coupling of the axion field to right-handed neutrinos. This baryogenesis model predicts heavy neutral leptons that are most naturally within reach of future lepton colliders, but in finely tuned regions of parameter space may also be accessible at the high-luminosity LHC and the beam dump experiment SHiP. Early-Universe Simulations of the Cosmological Axion

Ultracompact dark matter (DM) minihalos at masses at and below 10 –12 $M_⊙$ arise in axion DM models where the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry is broken after inflation. The minihalos arise from density perturbations that are generated from the nontrivial axion self-interactions during and shortly after the collapse of the axion-string and domain-wall network. We perform high-resolution simulations of this scenario starting at the epoch before the PQ phase transition and ending at matter-radiation equality. We characterize the spectrum of primordial perturbations that are generated and comment on implications for efforts to detect axion DM. In this work, we also measure the DM density at different simulated masses and argue that the correct DM density is obtained for $m_a$ = 25.2 ± 11.0 μ eV .
