Evalution Of A 4.5-kW D-100 Thruster With Anode Layer

Design characteristics and performance data of a 4.5-kW, thruster with anode layer (TAL) developed at the Central Research Institue for Machine Building (TsNIIMASH) are presented. The TAL is designated the D-100 with a discharge chamber of outer diameter approximately 100mm. Performance characteristics demonstrated by the D-100 and life estimates by TsNIIMASH make this thruster an excellent candidate for a wide range of station keeping, orbit raising, orbit maneuvering and JPL planetary missions.

(abstract) Experimental Evaluation of Russian Anode Layer Thruster

This paper describes the results of a preliminary evaluation of a 1.35 kW anode layer thruster. Data on performance and plume characteristics will be presented. Data on thruster characteristics such as thrust, plume current densities, discharge voltage, discharge current, and mass flow rate along with the results of a 500-hour endurance test wear will be presented.

Masking of aluminum surface against anodizing

Masking material and a thickening agent preserve limited unanodized areas when aluminum surfaces are anodized with chromic acid. For protection of large areas it combines well with a certain self-adhesive plastic tape.

A method for precision anodize stripping

Felt templates saturated with etch solution remove anodized finish from aluminum without damage to the surface. The solution is a combination of nitric acid, chromic acid, and hydrofluoric acid.
