A Compositional Relevance Model for Adaptive Information Retrieval

There is a growing need for rapid and effective access to information in large electronic documentation systems. Access can be facilitated if information relevant in the current problem solving context can be automatically supplied to the user. This includes information relevant to particular user profiles, tasks being performed, and problems being solved. However most of this knowledge on contextual relevance is not found within the contents of documents, and current hypermedia tools do not provide any easy mechanism to let users add this knowledge to their documents. We propose a compositional relevance network to automatically acquire the context in which previous information was found relevant. The model records information on the relevance of references based on user feedback for specific queries and contexts. It also generalizes such information to derive relevant references for similar queries and contexts. This model lets users filter information by context of relevance, build personalized views of documents over time, and share their views with other users. It also applies to any type of multimedia information. Compared to other approaches, it is less costly and doesn't require any a priori statistical computation, nor an extended training period. It is currently being implemented into the Computer Integrated Documentation system which enables integration of various technical documents in a hypertext framework.

Space station dynamic modeling, disturbance accommodation, and adaptive control

Dynamic models for two space station configurations were derived. Space shuttle docking disturbances and their effects on the station and solar panels are quantified. It is shown that hard shuttle docking can cause solar panel buckling. Soft docking and berthing can substantially reduce structural loads at the expense of large shuttle and station attitude excursions. It is found predocking shuttle momentum reduction is necessary to achieve safe and routine operations. A direct model reference adaptive control is synthesized and evaluated for the station model parameter errors and plant dynamics truncations. The rigid body and the flexible modes are treated. It is shown that convergence of the adaptive algorithm can be achieved in 100 seconds with reasonable performance even during shuttle hard docking operations in which station mass and inertia are instantaneously changed by more than 100%.

Adaptive Internal Model Based Current Control with Embedded Active Damping of a Three-Phase Grid-Connected Inverter with LCL Filter for PV Application

This paper presents an internal model based controller with embedded active damping for a three-phase grid-connected inverter with LCL filter. A strategy to control the grid current based on the internal model principle is presented in this paper. It is known that a third-order LCL filter apart from providing better attenuation also poses the problem of initiating unwanted resonance oscillations especially during transients. To address this problem, an active damping strategy based on virtual resistance emulation on the grid side filter is implemented. Also, to ensure effective active damping, an online parameter update strategy is implemented for the filter parameters. The proposed method provides better attenuation to oscillation damping and achieves good tracking performance without adversely affecting the bandwidth. The architecture is verified based on computer simulations via MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS domain and various important case study results are presented.

Computational Modeling To Adapt Neutralizing Antibody

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) is the leading therapy for viral infections because it provides immediate protection and can be administered at higher levels than in a natural immune response. Finding mAbs that neutralize a broad spectrum of viral targets has proven difficult because many species and strains exist and blanket targeting is a slow and laborious process to experimentally screen 108 variants. A new method is needed to rapidly redesign mAbs for homologous targets. This project speeds up redesign using structure-based computational design to reduce the mAbs search space to a manageable level and screen mutants at a much higher rate than in experiments. Computation will also provide critical knowledge about the fundamental interactions. The project will adapt S230, a human antibody that neutralizes SARS-CoV, to neutralize SARS-COV-2.

Design implementation in model-reference adaptive systems

The derivation of an approximate error characteristic equation describing the transient system error response is given, along with a procedure for selecting adaptive gain parameters so as to relate to the transient error response. A detailed example of the application and implementation of these methods for a space shuttle type vehicle is included. An extension of the characteristic equation technique is used to provide an estimate of the magnitude of the maximum system error and an estimate of the time of occurrence of this maximum after a plant parameter disturbance. Techniques for relaxing certain stability requirements and the conditions under which this can be done and still guarantee asymptotic stability of the system error are discussed. Such conditions are possible because the Lyapunov methods used in the stability derivation allow for overconstraining a problem in the process of insuring stability.

Analytical verification of undesirable properties of direct model reference adaptive control algorithms

The present investigation is concerned with a new method, called 'final approach analysis', which has been developed to analyze the dynamic properties of a class of direct adaptive control algorithms. Particular attention is given to the robustness of these algorithms to a number of aspects. These aspects are related to the generation of high frequencies in the plant control signal, to excessive bandwidth of the adaptive control loop resulting in excitation of unmodeled dynamics, and, consequently, leading to dynamic instability of the closed-loop adaptive system, and, thirdly, to noise corrupted measurements. The final approach analysis is useful because it can be used in a constructive way to adjust the adaptive gains so as to limit the closed-loop system bandwidth and to ameliorate some of the undesirable characteristics of existing adaptive algorithms.

An object-oriented, technology-adaptive information model

The primary objective was to develop a computer information system for effectively presenting NASA's technologies to American industries, for appropriate commercialization. To this end a comprehensive information management model, applicable to a wide variety of situations, and immune to computer software/hardware technological gyrations, was developed. The model consists of four main elements: a DATA_STORE, a data PRODUCER/UPDATER_CLIENT and a data PRESENTATION_CLIENT, anchored to a central object-oriented SERVER engine. This server engine facilitates exchanges among the other model elements and safeguards the integrity of the DATA_STORE element. It is designed to support new technologies, as they become available, such as Object Linking and Embedding (OLE), on-demand audio-video data streaming with compression (such as is required for video conferencing), Worldwide Web (WWW) and other information services and browsing, fax-back data requests, presentation of information on CD-ROM, and regular in-house database management, regardless of the data model in place. The four components of this information model interact through a system of intelligent message agents which are customized to specific information exchange needs. This model is at the leading edge of modern information management models. It is independent of technological changes and can be implemented in a variety of ways to meet the specific needs of any communications situation. This summer a partial implementation of the model has been achieved. The structure of the DATA_STORE has been fully specified and successfully tested using Microsoft's FoxPro 2.6 database management system. Data PRODUCER/UPDATER and PRESENTATION architectures have been developed and also successfully implemented in FoxPro; and work has started on a full implementation of the SERVER engine. The model has also been successfully applied to a CD-ROM presentation of NASA's technologies in support of Langley Research Center's TAG efforts.

Multiple Concurrent Visual-Motor Mappings: Implications for Models of Adaptation

Previous research on adaptation to visual-motor rearrangement suggests that the central nervous system represents accurately only 1 visual-motor mapping at a time. This idea was examined in 3 experiments where subjects tracked a moving target under repeated alternations between 2 initially interfering mappings (the 'normal' mapping characteristic of computer input devices and a 108' rotation of the normal mapping). Alternation between the 2 mappings led to significant reduction in error under the rotated mapping and significant reduction in the adaptation aftereffect ordinarily caused by switching between mappings. Color as a discriminative cue, interference versus decay in adaptation aftereffect, and intermanual transfer were also examined. The results reveal a capacity for multiple concurrent visual-motor mappings, possibly controlled by a parametric process near the motor output stage of processing.
