DFT-based insight into finite-temperature properties of ferroelectric perovskites with lone-pair: the case of CsGeX 3 (X = Cl, Br, I)

Ferroelectrics remain in the focus of scientific attention for decades owing to their fundamental and practical appeal. Recently, ferroelectricity has been demonstrated in semiconducting halide perovskites (Zhang et al 2022 Sci. Adv. 8 eabj5881), offering both a rare combination of ferroelectricity and semiconductivity in the same material and a possible alternative to the prevailing perovskite oxide ferroelectrics. We propose a route to simulating such materials at finite temperatures capable of reproducing key experimental and first-principle data, such as Curie temperature, phase transition sequence, spontaneous polarization, and soft mode frequencies. The key methodological finding is the superior performance of hybrid exchange correlation functionals in parametrization of effective Hamiltonians for ferroelectrics with lone pair. The parametrization for effective Hamiltonians for CsGeX 3 (X = Cl, Br, I) is reported. The application of methodology to study polarization reversal in CsGeX 3 allows for the development of a ‘minimalistic’ model for polarization reversal in ferroelectrics that provides an insight into the mechanisms of polarization reversal and its key features, such as the relationship between the coercive field, temperature, and AC field frequency. Importantly, the model reveals the origin of the well-known and ever-puzzling overestimation of coercive fields in computations. Furthermore, we report a variety of finite-temperature properties of CsGeX 3 ferroelectrics, such as dielectric susceptibility, pyroelectric coefficients, and energy storage density, which reveal that these halide perovskites possess properties comparable to their oxide counterparts. Here, we believe that our work provides significant methodological advancements, deepens fundamental understanding of ferroelectrics, and reveals the potential of halide perovskite ferroelectrics.

Centralized and Decentralized Distributed Energy Resource Access Control Implementation Considerations.

A global transition to power grids with high penetrations of renewable energy generation is being driven in part by rapid installations of distributed energy resources (DER). New DER equipment includes standardized IEEE 1547-2018 communication interfaces and proprietary communications capabilities. Interoperable DER provides new monitoring and control capabilities. The existence of multiple entities with different roles and responsibilities within the DER ecosystem makes the Access Control (AC) mechanism necessary. In this paper, we introduce and compare two novel architectures, which provide a Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) service to the DER ecosystem’s entities. Selecting an appropriate RBAC technology is important for the RBAC administrator and users who request DER access authorization. The first architecture is centralized, based on the OpenLDAP, an open source implementation of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). The second approach is decentralized, based on a private Ethereum blockchain test network, where the RBAC model is stored and efficiently retrieved via the utilization of a single Smart Contract. We have implemented two end-to-end Proofs-of-Concept (PoC), respectively, to offer the RBAC service to the DER entities as web applications. Finally, an evaluation of the two approaches is presented, highlighting the key speed, cost, usability, and security features.

High Power Amplifier and Power Supply

A document discusses the creation of a high-voltage power supply (HVPS) that is able to contain voltages up to -20 kV, keep electrical field strengths to below 200 V/mil (approximately equal to 7.87 kV/mm), and can provide a 200-nanosecond rise/fall time focus modulator swinging between cathode potential of 16.3 kV and -19.3 kV. This HVPS can protect the 95-GHz, pulsed extended interaction klystron (EIK) from arcs/discharges from all sources, including those from within the EIK fs vacuum envelope. This innovation has a multi-winding pulse transformer design, which uses new winding techniques to provide the same delays and rise/fall times (less than 10 nanoseconds) at different potential levels ranging from -20 kV to -16 kV. Another feature involves a high-voltage printed-wiring board that was corona-free at -20 kV DC with a 3- kV AC swing. The corona-free multilayer high-voltage board is used to simulate fields of less than 200 V/mil (approximately equal to 7.87 kV/mm) at 20 kV DC. Drive techniques for the modulator FETs (field-effect transistors) (four to 10 in a series) were created to change states (3,000-V swing) without abrupt steps, while still maintaining required delays and transition times. The packing scheme includes a potting mold to house a ten-stage modulator in the space that, in the past, only housed a four-stage modulator. Problems keeping heat down were solved using aluminum oxide substrate in the high-voltage section to limit temperature rise to less than 10 while withstanding -20 kV DC voltage and remaining corona-free.

Proposal and Development of a High Voltage Variable Frequency Alternating Current Power System for Hybrid Electric Aircraft

The development of ultra-efficient commercial vehicles and the transition to low-carbon emission propulsion are seen as strategic thrust paths within NASA Aeronautics. A critical enabler to these paths comes in the form of hybrid electric propulsion systems. For megawatt-class systems, the best power system topology for these hybrid electric propulsion systems is debatable. Current proposals within NASA and the Aero community suggest using a combination of alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) for power generation, transmission, and distribution. This paper proposes an alternative to the current thought model through the use of a primarily high voltage AC power system, supported by the Convergent Aeronautics Solutions (CAS) Project. This system relies heavily on the use of doubly-fed induction machines (DFIMs), which provide high power densities, minimal power conversion, and variable speed operation. The paper presents background on the activity along with the system architecture, development status, and preliminary results.

Recent developments in photoresists for extreme-ultraviolet lithography

Here, this report describes recent developments and current needs in the field of high-resolution photopolymers and photomolecules briefly describing prior generation lithographic patterning materials. It subsequently concentrates on recent advances in both inorganic and polymeric materials for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. It is also part of a series of papers written in celebration of the centenary of the Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE) division of the American Chemical Society (ACS). PMSE has long been home to polymer chemists who have made important contributions to advances in semiconductor manufacturing as a result of PMSE's focus on polymer coatings research. While EUV lithography has been an area of research for several decades, only within the last 5 years has the combination of new light sources, EUV optics, tool advances and resist discoveries come together to transition this area from the patterning method of the future to a leading-edge manufacturing technology.

Nuclear Thermal Rocket/Vehicle Characteristics And Sensitivity Trades For NASA's Mars Design Reference Architecture (DRA) 5.0 Study

This paper summarizes Phase I and II analysis results from NASA's recent Mars DRA 5.0 study which re-examined mission, payload and transportation system requirements for a human Mars landing mission in the post-2030 timeframe. Nuclear thermal rocket (NTR) propulsion was again identified as the preferred in-space transportation system over chemical/aerobrake because of its higher specific impulse (I(sub sp)) capability, increased tolerance to payload mass growth and architecture changes, and lower total initial mass in low Earth orbit (IMLEO) which is important for reducing the number of Ares-V heavy lift launches and overall mission cost. DRA 5.0 features a long surface stay (approximately 500 days) split mission using separate cargo and crewed Mars transfer vehicles (MTVs). All vehicles utilize a common core propulsion stage with three 25 klbf composite fuel NERVA-derived NTR engines (T(sub ex) approximately 2650 - 2700 K, p(sub ch) approximately 1000 psia, epsilon approximately 300:1, I(sub sp) approximately 900 - 910 s, engine thrust-toweight ratio approximately 3.43) to perform all primary mission maneuvers. Two cargo flights, utilizing 1-way minimum energy trajectories, pre-deploy a cargo lander to the surface and a habitat lander into a 24-hour elliptical Mars parking orbit where it remains until the arrival of the crewed MTV during the next mission opportunity (approximately 26 months later). The cargo payload elements aerocapture (AC) into Mars orbit and are enclosed within a large triconicshaped aeroshell which functions as payload shroud during launch, then as an aerobrake and thermal protection system during Mars orbit capture and subsequent entry, descent and landing (EDL) on Mars. The all propulsive crewed MTV is a 0-gE vehicle design that utilizes a fast conjunction trajectory that allows approximately 6-7 month 1-way transit times to and from Mars. Four 12.5 kW(sub e) per 125 square meter rectangular photovoltaic arrays provide the crewed MTV with approximately 50 kW(sub e) of electrical power in Mars orbit for crew life support and spacecraft subsystem needs. Vehicle assembly involves autonomous Earth orbit rendezvous and docking between the propulsion stages, in-line propellant tanks and payload elements. Nine Ares-V launches -- five for the two cargo MTVs and four for the crewed MTV -- deliver the key components for the three MTVs. Details on mission, payload, engine and vehicle characteristics and requirements are presented and the results of key trade studies are discussed.

Microscopic piezoelectric behavior of clamped and membrane (001) PMN-30PT thin films

Bulk single-crystal relaxor-ferroelectrics, like Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O- 3 -PbTiO 3 (PMN-PT), are widely known for their large piezoelectricity. This is attributed to polarization rotation, which is facilitated by the presence of various crystal symmetries for compositions near a morphotropic phase boundary. Relaxor-ferroelectric thin films, which are necessary for low-voltage applications, suffer a reduction in their piezoelectric response due to clamping by the passive substrate. To understand the microscopic behavior of this adverse phenomenon, we employ the AC electric field driven in-operando synchrotron x-ray diffraction on patterned device structures to investigate the piezoelectric domain behavior under an electric field for both a clamped (001) PMN-PT thin film on Si and a (001) PMN-PT membrane released from its substrate. In the clamped film, the substrate inhibits the field-induced rhombohedral (R) to tetragonal (T) phase transition resulting in a reversible R to Monoclinic (M) transition with a reduced longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient d 33 < 100 pm/V. Releasing the film from the substrate results in recovery of the R to T transition and results in a d 33 > 1000 pm/V. Here, using diffraction with spatial mapping, we find that lateral constraints imposed by the boundary between the active and inactive materials also inhibit the R to T transition. Phase-field calculations on both clamped and released PMN-PT thin films simulate our experimental findings. Resolving the suppression of thin film piezoelectric response is critical to their application in piezo-driven technologies.

Unconventional Anomalous Hall Effect in Hexagonal Polar Magnet Y 3 Co 8 Sn 4

A rare realization of unconventional anomalous Hall effect (UAHE) both below and above the magnetic transition temperature (T C ) in a hexagonal noncentrosymmetric magnet Y 3 Co 8 Sn 4 , using a combined experimental and ab initio calculations. Occurrence of such UAHE is mainly attributed to the reciprocal ($\mathscr{KS}$) topology (i.e., the presence of topological Weyl points at/near the Fermi level), along with some contribution from the topological magnetic texture (at low temperatures), as inferred from the measured field-dependent ac susceptibility. The effect of UAHE on the measured transport behavior however evolves differently with temperature above and below T C = 53 K, suggesting different physical mechanism responsible in the two phases. A unique planar ferrimagnetic ordering is found to be the most stable state with ab-plane as the easy plane below T C . The simulated net magnetization and the moment per Co atom agrees fairly well with the experimentally measured values. A reasonably large anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) is also observed in both the phases (above and below T C ) of the present compound, which is again not so ubiquitous. In conclusion, the results underscore the family of R 3 Co 8 Sn 4 (R = rare earth) polar magnets as a compelling backdrop for exploring the synergy of magnetism and topological non-trivial electronic states, pivotal for spintronic applications.

Reduced Common-Mode Voltage PWM Scheme for Full-SiC Three-Level Uninterruptible Power Supply With Small DC-Link Capacitors

In this article, a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) scheme for three-level full-SiC uninterruptible power supplies is developed to achieve a high power density. Two key passive components are selected for size reduction of the ac-ac stage: common-mode (CM) EMI filter, and dc-link capacitors. To reduce the CM noise, a new vector combination is proposed based on synchronous switching among three-phases. The proposed combinations align CM voltage (CMV) to be a single pulse per switching period. Owing to the simple shape, CMV cancellation between a three-level rectifier and inverter can be maximally utilized. A transition between the three combinations can control the drift of neutral point voltage. An equivalent carrier-based implementation is developed. Second, a simple algorithm to compensate neutral point voltage fluctuation is proposed both for differential mode (DM) and CM output voltage. Low-order harmonics on three-phase currents and an additional high-frequency CM noise by misaligned switching instant can be eliminated. The proposed compensation can be implemented by a simple correction on carrier slopes and injected zero-sequence voltage. The proposed PWM scheme is verified with 20-kW full-SiC UPS switching at 60 kHz with 140 μF dc-link capacitors.

Advanced spectroscopic studies of (PPh 4 ) 2 [Co(N 3 ) 4 ], a field-induced single-ion magnet

The high-spin Co II complex (PPh 4 ) 2 [Co(N 3 ) 4 ] (Co-N 3 )has been investigated using advanced spectroscopic techniques [far-IR magneto-spectroscopy (FIRMS), high-frequency and high-field EPR (HFEPR), and inelastic neutron scattering (INS)] to study its zero-field-splitting (ZFS), giving spin-Hamiltonian (SH) parameters. The analysis of multi-frequency HFEPR reveals the easy-axis anisotropy with a D value of −10.39(5) cm −1 and a rhombic ratio (E/D) of 0.21(1). The magnetic properties have also been probed by direct-current (DC) magnetometry, suggesting minor differences in anisotropy from the previously reported polymorph (Co-N 3 ′). Ligand-field theory (LFT) analysis indicates that the structures of Co-N 3 and Co-N 3 ′ are closer to D 2d symmetry than other symmetries considered. Alternate-current (AC) susceptibility reveals slow magnetic relaxation under an applied field, indicating that Co-N 3 is a field-induced single-ion magnet (SIM). Here, while both Co-N 3 and Co-N 3 ′ were studied by DC magnetometry, one unusual aspect of the current work on Co-N 3 is that advanced spectroscopies HFEPR, FIRMS, and INS were used to directly observe transitions between ZFS split states, giving accurate SH parameters.

GASPS--A Herschel Survey of Gas and Dust in Protoplanetary Disks: Summary and Initial Statistics

We describe a large-scale far-infrared line and continuum survey of protoplanetary disk through to young debris disk systems carried out using the ACS instrument on the Herschel Space Observatory. This Open Time Key program, known as GASPS (Gas Survey of Protoplanetary Systems), targeted approx. 250 young stars in narrow wavelength regions covering the [OI] fine structure line at 63 micron the brightest far-infrared line in such objects. A subset of the brightest targets were also surveyed in [OI]145 micron, [CII] at 157 μm, as well as several transitions of H2O and high-excitation CO lines at selected wavelengths between 78 and 180 micron. Additionally, GASPS included continuum photometry at 70, 100 and 160 micron, around the peak of the dust emission. The targets were SED Class II– III T Tauri stars and debris disks from seven nearby young associations, along with a comparable sample of isolated Herbig AeBe stars. The aim was to study the global gas and dust content in a wide sample of circumstellar disks, combining the results with models in a systematic way. In this overview paper we review the scientific aims, target selection and observing strategy of the program. We summarize some of the initial results, showing line identifications, listing the detections, and giving a first statistical study of line detectability. The [OI] line at 63 micron was the brightest line seen in almost all objects, by a factor of ∼10. Overall [OI] 63 micron detection rates were 49%, with 100% of HAeBe stars and 43% of T Tauri stars detected. A comparison with published disk dust masses (derived mainly from sub-mm continuum, assuming standard values of the mm mass opacity) shows a dust mass threshold for [OI] 63 μm detection of approx.10(exp -5) Solar M.. Normalizing to a distance of 140 pc, 84% of objects with dust masses ≥10 (exp -5) Solar M can be detected in this line in the present survey; 32% of those of mass 10(exp -6) – 10 (exp -5) Solar M, and only a very small number of unusual objects with lower masses can be detected. This is consistent with models with a moderate UV excess and disk flaring. For a given disk mass, [OI] detectability is lower for M stars compared with earlier spectral types. Both the continuum and line emission was, in most systems, spatially and spectrally unresolved and centered on the star, suggesting that emission in most cases was from the disk. Approximately 10 objects showed resolved emission, most likely from outflows. In the GASPS sample, [OI] detection rates in T Tauri associations in the 0.3–4 Myr age range were approx. 50%. For each association in the 5–20 Myr age range, approx. 2 stars remain detectable in [OI] 63 micron, and no systems were detected in associations with age >20 Myr. Comparing with the total number of young stars in each association, and assuming a ISM-like gas/dust ratio, this indicates that approx. 18% of stars retain a gas-rich disk of total mass approx. Jupiter- M for 1–4 Myr, 1–7% keep such disks for 5–10 Myr, but none are detected beyond 10–20 Myr. The brightest [OI] objects from GASPS were also observed in [OI]145 micron, [CII]157 micron and CO J = 18- 17, with detection rates of 20–40%. Detection of the [CII] line was not correlated with disk mass, suggesting it arises more commonly from a compact remnant envelope.

Simple and Robust Carrier-Based PWM Technique for Single-Stage Three-phase Rectifier Indirect Matrix Converter

Indirect matrix converters (IMC) can offer high efficiency, high power density, and bidirectional power flow capability with a single-stage three-to single-phase AC-AC power conversion integrating a conventional three-phase active rectifier with a primary side full-bridge inverter of a dual active bridge converter. However, the IMCs generally require space vector modulation techniques, leading to complex sectors and dwell times calculations. A practical implementation of the modulation methods with a commonly used digital signal processor becomes even more challenging when considering power factor correction, harmonics reduction, and deadtime between sector transitions. This paper proposes a simple and robust carrier-based pulse width modulation (PWM) technique determined through a voltage-source inverter (VSI) to current-source inverter (CSI) to IMC conversion. This translation enables the adoption of all conventional VSI control methods with active and reactive power control in the IMCs through simple carrier and reference waveform comparison. The VSI vectors are first one-on-one matched with CSI vectors and translated to IMC modulation signals without calculating sectors and dwell times. Nine different carrier waveforms are proposed, and the converter performance is analyzed. Grid current THD and efficiency are estimated for each modulation method. The symmetric A and B methods had the lowest THD of the grid current, 2.80%, and the efficiency remained at approximately 98.3%, making it the most suitable carrier-based method proposed in this paper. The space vector PWM (SVPWM) modulation method was implemented to the DSP and generated the expected twelve gate signals.

Magnetocapacitance effect and magnetoelectric coupling in type-II multiferroic HoFeWO 6

We have investigated the multiferroicity and magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in HoFeWO 6 . With a noncentrosymmetric polar structure (space group Pna2 1 ) at room temperature, this compound shows an onset of electric polarization with an antiferromagnetic ordering at the Néel temperature (T N ) of 17.8 K. The magnetic properties of the polycrystalline samples were studied by DC and AC magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The metamagnetic behavior at low temperatures was found to be directly related to the dielectric properties of the compound. In particular, field-dependent measurements of capacitance show a magnetocapacitance (MC) effect with double-hysteresis loop behavior in direct correspondence with the magnetization. Our x-ray diffraction results show the Pna2 1 structure down to 8 K and suggest the absence of a structural phase transition across T N . Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy and soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Fe L 2,3 and Ho M 4,5 edges revealed the oxidation state of Fe and Ho cations to be 3+. Fe L 2,3 XMCD further shows that Fe 3+ cations are antiferromagnetically ordered in a noncollinear fashion with spins arranged 90° with respect to each other. Our findings show that HoFeWO 6 is a type-II multiferroic exhibiting a MC effect. Furthermore, the observed MC effect and the change in polarization by the magnetic field, as well as their direct correspondence with magnetization, further support the strong ME coupling in this compound.

Elastocaloric evidence for a multicomponent superconductor stabilized within the nematic state in Ba(Fe 1− x Co x ) 2 As 2

The iron-based high-$T_c$ superconductors (SCs) exhibit rich phase diagrams with intertwined phases, including magnetism, nematicity, and superconductivity. The superconducting $T_c$ in many of these materials is maximized in the regime of strong nematic fluctuations, making the role of nematicity in influencing the superconductivity a topic of intense research. Here, in this study, we use the AC elastocaloric effect (ECE) to map out the phase diagram of Ba(Fe 1− x Co x ) 2 As 2 near optimal doping. The ECE signature at $T_c$ on the overdoped side, where superconductivity condenses without any nematic order, is quantitatively consistent with other thermodynamic probes that indicate a single-component superconducting state. In contrast, on the slightly underdoped side, where superconductivity condenses within the nematic phase, ECE reveals a second thermodynamic transition proximate to and below $T_c$. We rule out magnetism and reentrant tetragonality as the origin of this transition and find that our observations strongly suggest a phase transition into a multicomponent superconducting state. This implies the existence of a subdominant pairing instability that competes strongly with the dominant $s^±$ instability. Our results highlight the significant role of nematic order in determining the pairing symmetry close to optimal doping in this extensively studied iron-based SC, while also demonstrating the power of ECE in uncovering strain-tuned phase diagrams of quantum materials.

Skyrmion ratchet in funnel geometries

Here, using a particle-based model, we simulate the behavior of a skyrmion under the influence of asymmetric funnel geometries and ac driving at zero temperature. We specifically investigate possibilities for controlling the skyrmion motion by harnessing a ratchet effect. Our results show that as the amplitude of a unidirectional ac drive is increased, the skyrmion can be set into motion along either the easy or hard direction of the funnel depending on the ac driving direction. When the ac drive is parallel to the funnel axis, the skyrmion flows in the easy direction and its average velocity is quantized. In contrast, when the ac drive is perpendicular to the funnel axis, a Magnus-induced ratchet effect occurs, and the skyrmion moves along the hard direction with a constant average velocity. For biharmonic ac driving of equal amplitude along both the parallel and perpendicular directions, we observe a reentrant pinning phase where the skyrmion ratchet vanishes. For asymmetric biharmonic ac drives, the skyrmion exhibits a combination of effects and can move in either the easy or hard direction depending on the configuration of the ac drives. These results indicate that it is possible to achieve controlled skyrmion motion using funnel geometries, and we discuss ways in which this could be harnessed to perform data transfer operations.

Glassy correlated state induced by disorder in the frustrated antiferromagnet Tb 2 Zr 2 O 7

Here, we study the low-temperature thermomagnetic properties of the polycrystalline material Tb 2 Zr 2 O 7 through ac susceptibility and specific heat measurements. This zirconate displays a defect-fluorite structure in which the magnetic Tb 3+ and nonmagnetic Zr 4+ cations sit randomly on the same metal sublattice. No long-range magnetic order is found down to 100 mK, although dominant antiferromagnetic interactions are observed and the spins remain dynamic down to the lowest temperatures investigated. We observed a frequency-dependent peak around 2.5 K which is well described by many models of a canonical spin-glass transition. In-field specific heat measurements and the recovered entropy of the system R ln(4) suggest a two doublets ground state separated by 7 K. Comparisons to the pyrochlores Tb 2 Ti 2 O 7 and Tb 2 Hf 2 O 7 reinforce the collective spin-glass-type behavior and the opening for discussions of an exotic Coulomb phase in this material.
