$K^{*}(892)^0$ production and the time between freeze-outs in $^{40}$Ar+$^{45}$Sc collisions by NA61/SHINE at the CERN SPS

The analysis of the production of strange $K^{*}(892)^0$ resonances allows us to better understand the temporal evolution of high-energy nucleus--nucleus collisions. In particular, the ratio of $K^{*}(892)^0$ to charged kaon yields is used to determine the time interval between chemical and kinetic freeze-outs. In this paper, the first measurements of $K^{*}(892)^0$ production in central $^{40}$Ar+$^{45}$Sc collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron are reported. They were performed by NA61/SHINE at collision center-of-mass energies per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 8.8, 11.9, 16.8 GeV. The obtained $\langle K^{*}(892)^0 \rangle/\langle K^{+} \rangle $ and $\langle K^{*}(892)^0 \rangle/\langle K^{-} \rangle$ mean multiplicity ratios are compared with corresponding results in $p$+$p$ collisions, allowing for an estimate of the time interval between chemical and thermal freeze-outs in the $^{40}$Ar+$^{45}$Sc system. These are the first such results reported for $^{40}$Ar+$^{45}$Sc collisions.

Photoproduction of K 0 S Pairs at GlueX

We present an study of the ¿¿ ¿ ¿0 ¿¿0 ¿¿ channel measured by the GlueX experiment. This channel selects for resonances with ¿¿¿ = even++ quantum numbers (the ¿0, ¿2, ¿0, and ¿2 light, flavorless mesons) and potentially contains contributions from the lightest scalar glueball (¿0). Data from the 2017, 2018, and 2020 run periods are used to perform a mass independent (binned) partial-wave analysis to distinguish spin states. Due to the polarized photon beam at GlueX, we are also able to extract reflectivity amplitudes for the first time in this channel. Additionally, we perform mass-dependent partial-wave analyses using a fixed ¿-matrixparameterization to attempt a determination of the relative contribution of each res onance, and we present a guided initialization method which facilitates navigation through a parameter space with many local minima. These mass-dependent fits are a proof-of-concept in using fixed ¿-matrix models constrained by other experiments to measure photoproduc tion amplitudes for overlapping states which may only differ by isospin, a property which cannot be distinguished in this channel.

Multiplicity-dependent production of Σ(1385) ± and Ξ(1530) 0 in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The production yields of the Σ(1385) ± and Ξ(1530) 0 resonances are measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with ALICE. The measurements are performed as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity $\langle$dN ch /dη$\rangle$, which is related to the energy density produced in the collision. The results include transverse momentum (p T ) distributions, p T - integrated yields, mean transverse momenta of Σ(1385) ± and Ξ(1530) 0 , as well as ratios of the p T - integrated resonance yields relative to yields of other hadron species. The Σ(1385) ± /π ± and Ξ(1530) 0 /π ± yield ratios are consistent with the trend of the enhancement of strangeness production from low to high multiplicity pp collisions, which was previously observed for strange and multi-strange baryons. The yield ratio between the measured resonances and the long-lived baryons with the same strangeness content exhibits a hint of a mild increasing trend at low multiplicity, despite too large uncertainties to exclude the flat behaviour. The results are compared with predictions from models such as EPOS-LHC and PYTHIA 8 with Rope shoving. The latter provides the best description of the multiplicity dependence of the Σ(1385) ± and Ξ(1530) 0 production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV.

Search for lepton-flavor-violating ${\tau }^{-}\to {{\ell}}^{-}{K}_{s}^{0}$ decays at Belle and Belle II

We present the results of a search for charged-lepton-flavor violating decays ${\tau }^{-}\to {{\ell}}^{-}{K}_{s}^{0}$, where ℓ − is either an electron or a muon. We combine e + e − data samples recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider (428 fb −1 ) with samples recorded by the Belle experiment at the KEKB collider (980 fb −1 ) to obtain a sample of 1.3 billion e + e − → τ + τ − events. We observe 0 and 1 events and set 90% confidence level upper limits of 0.8 × 10 −8 and 1.2 × 10 −8 on the branching fractions of the decay modes ${\tau }^{-}\to {e}^{-}{K}_{S}^{0}$ and ${\tau }^{-}\to {\mu }^{-}{K}_{S}^{0}$, respectively. These are the most stringent upper limits to date.

$K^0_S$ and $Λ(\overline{Λ})$ two-particle femtoscopic correlations in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02TeV

Two-particle correlations are presented for $K^0_S$, $Λ$, and $\overline{Λ}$ strange hadrons as a function of relative momentum in lead-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 0.607 nb -1 and was collected using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. These correlations are sensitive to quantum statistics and to final-state interactions between the particles. The source size extracted from the $K^0_S$$K^0_S$ correlations is found to decrease from 4.6 to 1.6 fm in going from central to peripheral collisions. Strong interaction scattering parameters (i.e., scattering length and effective range) are determined from the $ΛK^0_S$ and $ΛΛ$ (including their charge conjugates) correlations using the Lednický–Lyuboshitz model and are compared to theoretical and other experimental results.

A sound horizon-free measurement of H 0 in DESI 2024

The physical size of the sound horizon at recombination is a powerful source of information for early-time measurements of the Hubble constant H 0 , and many proposed solutions to the Hubble tension therefore involve modifications to this scale. In light of this, there has been growing interest in measuring H 0 independently of the sound horizon. We present the first such measurement to use data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), jointly analyzing the full-shape galaxy power spectra of DESI luminous red galaxies, emission line galaxies, quasars, and the bright galaxy sample, in a total of six redshift bins. Information from the sound horizon scale is removed from our constraints via a rescaling procedure at the power spectrum level, with our sound horizon-marginalized measurement being driven instead primarily by the matter-radiation equality scale. This measurement is then combined with additional sound horizon-free information from Planck+ACT CMB lensing, uncalibrated type Ia supernovae, and the DESI Lyman-α forest. We agnostically combine with the DESY5, Pantheon+, and Union3 supernova datasets, with our tightest respective constraints being H 0 = 66.7 +1.7 -1.9 , 67.9 +1.9 -2.1 , and 67.8 +2.0 -2.2 km s -1 Mpc -1 . This corresponds to a sub-3% sound horizon-free constraint of the Hubble constant, and is the most precise measurement of its kind to date. Even without including information from the sound horizon, our measurement is still in 2.2-3.0σ tension with SH0ES. Additionally, the consistency between our result and other measurements that do rely on the sound horizon scale provides no evidence for new early-Universe physics (e.g. early dark energy). Future DESI data releases will allow unprecedented measurements of H 0 and place strong constraints on models that use beyond-ΛCDM physics to ameliorate the Hubble tension.

Inference of the linear matter power spectrum at z = 0 using DESI DR1 Full-Shape data

Measurements of galaxy distributions at large cosmic distances capture clustering from the past. In this study, we use a cosmological model to translate these observations into the present-day galaxy distribution. Specifically, we reconstruct the 3D linear matter power spectrum at redshift z = 0 using Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Year 1 (DR1) galaxy clustering data and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observations, assuming the ΛCDM model, and compare it to the result assuming the w 0 w a CDM model. Building on previous state-of-the-art methods, we apply Effective Field Theory (EFT) modelling of the galaxy power spectrum to account for small-scale effects in the 2-point statistics of galaxy data. Implementation of the EFT approach improves the modelling of the galaxy power spectrum, providing a more robust consistency test of the assumed cosmological model. By casting both CMB and galaxy clustering observations, spanning distinct redshift regimes, into k-space, we can identify discrepancies between the datasets of different redshifts, which would indicate potential inaccuracies in the assumed expansion history. While previous studies have shown consistency with ΛCDM, this work extends the analysis with higher-quality data to further test the expansion histories of both ΛCDM and w 0 w a CDM. Our findings show that both ΛCDM and w 0 w a CDM provide consistent fits to the linear matter power spectrum recovered from DESI DR1 data.

$Ξ$ 𝑐 → $Ξ$ form factors from lattice QCD with domain-wall quarks: A new piece in the puzzle of $Ξ^0_𝑐$ decay rates

We present a lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) determination of the vector and axial-vector form factors that describe the charm-baryon semileptonic decays Ξ 𝑐 → Ξ⁢ℓ + ⁢𝜈 ℓ . The calculation uses a domain-wall action for the up, down, and strange quarks, and an anisotropic clover action for the charm quark. We use four ensembles of gauge-field configurations generated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations, with lattice spacings between 0.111 and 0.073 fm and pion masses ranging from 420 to 230 MeV. We present Standard Model predictions for the decay rates and branching fractions of Ξ$^0_𝑐$ → Ξ$^−_𝑐$⁢ℓ + ⁢𝜈 ℓ and Ξ$^+_𝑐$ → Ξ$^0_𝑐$⁢ℓ + ⁢𝜈 ℓ for ℓ =𝑒, 𝜇. In particular, we obtain Γ⁡(Ξ$^0_𝑐$ → Ξ − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝜈 𝑒 )/|𝑉 𝑐⁢𝑠 | 2 = 0.2515⁢(73) ps −1 and ℬ⁡(Ξ$^0_𝑐$ → Ξ − ⁢𝑒 +⁢ 𝜈 𝑒 ) = 3.58⁢(12)%. These values are higher than those predicted by a previous lattice calculation and substantially higher than the experimentally measured values, but consistent with expectations from approximate 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(3) flavor symmetry.

ϕ → 3 π and ϕ π 0 transition form factor from Khuri-Treiman equations

This work studies the ϕ → 3 π decay and the ϕ → π 0 γ * transition form factor, utilizing the Khuri-Treiman formalism to account for analyticity, crossing, and unitarity. Using once-subtracted dispersion relations, we perform a simultaneous fit to the ϕ → 3 π Dalitz plot distribution and the ϕ → π 0 γ * measurements from the KLOE collaboration, finding good agreement with these experimental data. These results reaffirm the applicability of the Khuri-Treiman approach in the analysis of three-body decays. An interesting result is that the subtraction constant appearing in the equations is similar to a sum rule expectation, in contrast to analogous studies of ω → 3 π decays and ω → π 0 γ * , which shows significant deviations. Our results also provide a reasonable description of the trend of the transition form factor data from in the e + e − → ϕ π 0 scattering region. These intriguing theoretical differences between the decays of ϕ and ω could encourage further experimental measurements to assess the discrepancies and refine the theoretical predictions.

Determination of proton and neutron contributions to the 0$^+_{𝑔⁡𝑠}$ → 2$^+_{1}$ excitations in 42 Si and 44 S using inelastic proton scattering in inverse kinematics and intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation

Here, we have measured the 0$^+_{𝑔⁡𝑠}$ → 2$^+_1$ transition in the neutron-rich 𝑁 = 28 isotope 42 Si using the probes of intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation and inelastic proton scattering in inverse kinematics at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams with beam particle rates of ≈ 5 particles/s. The results of these two measurements allowed us to determine 𝑀 𝑛 /𝑀 𝑝 , the ratio of the neutron and proton transition matrix elements for the 0$^+_{𝑔⁡𝑠}$ → 2$^+_1$ transition. In addition, we have measured the 0$^+_{𝑔⁡𝑠}$ → 2$^+_1$ transition in the isotone 44 S using inverse kinematics inelastic proton scattering. By comparing the 44 S proton-scattering result with a recent intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation result on the same transition, we were able to determine 𝑀 𝑛 /𝑀 𝑝 for the 0$^+_{𝑔⁡𝑠}$ → 2$^+_1$ transition in this nucleus as well. This work strengthens the evidence that 42 Si has a stable quadrupole deformation in its ground state and that 44 S does not. Both conclusions are further supported by shell-model calculations carried out with the FSU interaction.

Evidence for $CP$ violation and measurement of $CP$-violating parameters in B$^0_\mathrm{s}$ $\to$ J/$\psi\,\phi$(1020) decays in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

A pioneering machine-learning-based flavor-tagging algorithm combining same-side and opposite-side tagging is used to obtain the equivalent of 27$\,$000 tagged B$^0_\mathrm{s}$$\to$ J/$\psi\, \phi$(1020) decays from pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 96.5 fb$^{-1}$. A time- and flavor-dependent angular analysis of the $\mu^+\mu^-$K$^+$K$^-$ final state is used to measure parameters of the $\mathrm{B}^0_\mathrm{s}$-$\overline{\mathrm{B}}^0_\mathrm{s}$ system. The weak phase is measured to be $\phi_\mathrm{s}$ = $-$73 $\pm$ 23 (stat) $\pm$ 7 (syst) mrad, which, combined with a $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV CMS result, gives $\phi_\mathrm{s}$ = $-$74 $\pm$ 23 mrad. This value differs from zero by 3.2 standard deviations, providing evidence for $CP$ violation in B$^0_\mathrm{s}$$\to$ J/$\psi\,\phi$(1020) decays. All measured physics parameters are found to agree with standard model predictions where available.

Measurement of 𝐷 0 Meson Photoproduction in Ultraperipheral Heavy Ion Collisions

This Letter reports the first measurement of photonuclear 𝐷 0 meson production in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions. The study is performed using lead-lead collision data, with an integrated luminosity of 1.34 nb −1 , collected by the CMS experiment at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.36 TeV. Photonuclear events, where one of the colliding nuclei breaks up and the other remains intact, are selected based on breakup neutron emissions and by requiring no particle activity in a large rapidity interval in the direction of the photon-emitting nucleus. The 𝐷 0 mesons are reconstructed via the 𝐷 0 → 𝐾 −⁢ 𝜋 + decay channel, with the cross section measured as a function of 𝐷 0 meson transverse momentum and rapidity. The results are compared with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations that employ recent parametrizations of the lead nuclear parton distribution functions, as well as with predictions based on the color glass condensate framework. This measurement is the first photonuclear collision study characterizing parton distribution functions of lead nuclei for parton fractional momenta 𝑥 (relative to the nucleon) ranging approximately from a few 10 −4 to 10 −2 for different hard energy scale 𝑄 2 selections.

Measurement of the e + e − → p p ¯ π 0 cross section at s = 2.1000 − 3.0800 GeV

The process e + e − → p p ¯ π 0 is studied at 20 center-of-mass energies ranging from 2.1000 to 3.0800 GeV using 636.8 pb − 1 of data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross sections for e + e − → p p ¯ π 0 are measured with high precision. Since the lowest center-of-mass energy, 2.1000 GeV, is less than 90 MeV above the p p ¯ π 0 energy threshold, we can probe the threshold behavior for this reaction. However, no anomalous threshold enhancement is found in the cross sections for e + e − → p p ¯ π 0 . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for the Rare Decay 𝐷 0 → 𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV

A search for the rare decay 𝐷 0 → 𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − is reported using proton-proton collision events at $\sqrt{s}$ =13.6 TeV collected by the CMS detector in 2022–2023, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 64.5 fb −1 . This is the first analysis to use a newly developed inclusive dimuon trigger, expanding the scope of the CMS flavor physics program. The search uses 𝐷 0 mesons obtained from 𝐷* + → 𝐷 0 ⁢𝜋 + decays. No significant excess is observed. A limit on the branching fraction of ℬ⁡(𝐷 0 → 𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − ) < 2.4 × 10 −9 at 95% confidence level is set. This is the most stringent upper limit set on any flavor changing neutral current decay in the charm sector.

$K^0_S$ meson production in inelastic p+p interactions at 31, 40 and 80 $\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$ beam momentum measured by NA61$/$SHINE at the CERN SPS

The yields of $K^0_S$ mesons have been measured in inelastic p+p interactions at incident projectile momenta of 31, 40 and 80 $\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$ ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7, 8.8$ and 12.3 $\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}$, respectively). The data were recorded by the NA61$/$SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron and the $K^0_S$ mesons identified via their decays into $\pi ^{+} \pi ^{-}$ pairs. Double-differential distributions are presented as function of transverse momentum and rapidity. The mean multiplicities of $K^0_S$ mesons were determined to be $(5.95 \pm 0.19 (stat) \pm 0.30 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$ at 31 $\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$, $(7.61 \pm 0.13 (stat) \pm 0.43 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$ at 40 $\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$ and $(11.58 \pm 0.12 (stat) \pm 0.55 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$ at 80 $\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$. The results on $K^{0}_{S}$ production are compared with the production of charged kaons in corresponding reactions and with model calculations (Epos1.99, SMASH 2.0 and PHSD) as well as with published data from other experiments.

High-$Q_0$ treatment of CEBAF 1.5 GHz SRF cavities

The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) was the first large-scale accelerator to employ superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities for continuous-wave operation. Ongoing research and development efforts continue to focus on increasing the intrinsic quality factor (Q 0 ) of these cavities in order to reduce cryogenic losses while maintaining operational gradients. Here, in this work, we report on the application of high-Q 0 surface treatments to single-cell and multicell C100 and C75 style 1.5 GHz niobium cavities used in the CEBAF accelerator. Nitrogen infusion and oxygen alloying via medium-temperature baking were applied under heat-treatment constraints relevant to existing cavity hardware. Both processes yielded substantial improvements in Q 0 at moderate accelerating gradients, achieving values of approximately 2 × 10 10 at 2.07 K and 20 MV/m. The effectiveness of nitrogen infusion at reduced annealing temperatures and the successful extension of oxygen alloying to multicell cavities are demonstrated. These results establish viable pathways for implementing high-Q 0 treatments in CEBAF-compatible cavities and support future integration into cryomodules for reduced operational cryogenic load.
