Creation of Synthetic Electric Grids (SPP/MISO) Supporting PERFORM (Final Report)

Over the course of the project, two “realistic but not real” synthetic transmission-level grid models over the SPP-MISO and ERCOT footprints were created to provide more realistic data and increase the reliability and resiliency of the grids under a variety of scenarios. The synthetic ERCOT transmission grid is compatible with the distribution grid developed in collaboration with NREL. All generators are based on the EIA 860 data and a column with EIA plant code and Gen ID is added to generators of both grids so that they can be easily mapped. The improvements are also made to electric grids including N-1 contingencies with some remedial actions, improving the transmission lines to avoid lines in lakes, including an HVDC line to the SPP-MISO case, providing several generator parameters and their temporal constraints that were not included in EIA 860 form, generators’ cost curves, load offer curves, adding phase shifters and tap changers with impedance correction tables, adding reactive power control and partitioning the grids into active and reactive reserve zones and determine different types of the required reserve for each zone. Hourly load time series at the bus level were generated to create scenarios for solving power flow in different loading conditions. Weather measurement information and the models of renewable generators are used to directly include the impact of weather on the grids. Based on a variety of load and weather conditions the grids are improved to accommodate different conditions. The ERCOT 7k-bus grids were also modeled for the year 2030 with predicted improvements in renewable resources. The renewable generation model was also improved with historic weather data included. The impact of electric vehicles on the ERCOT grid is also modeled.

Soil mechanics results of Luna 16 and Lunokhod 1: A preliminary report

The physical and mechanical properties of the lunar soil, as determined by Luna 16 and Lunokhod 1 experiments, are discussed. Data are included for interactions between vehicle wheels and the lunar soil, compressibility, resistance to penetration, and friction characteristics of the soil. The shear strength of the returned lunar soil for various bulk densities is also examined. Several potential spacecraft materials were tested in contact with lunar soil to determine their friction and wear characteristics.

Prediction of electron concentration reductions in re-entry flow fields due to electrophilic liquid and water injection.

Discussion of an analytical model which leads to predictions of reductions in electron concentrations in reentry flow fields due to the injection of electrophilic liquids and water. The processes incorporated into the model are: penetration and breakup of the liquid jet, droplet acceleration and vaporization, expansion of the liquid spray due to droplet vaporization, electrophilic vapor diffusion, heterogeneous and homogeneous charged species recombination kinetics and homogeneous electron attachment kinetics. Spray boundary calculations are shown to be in good agreement with photographic observations of water and Freon E-3 sprays in wind tunnel tests of a scale model RAM C-III flight vehicle. Fixed-bias electrostatic probe data taken during the RAM C-III flight are interpreted in terms of effective jet penetration distances - which are shown to be consistent with calculations using the present model.

Atmosphere revitalization in the space station prototype.

The atmosphere revitalization group (ARG) for the space station prototype (SSP) environmental/thermal control and life support system (ETC/LSS) has been designed to meet a comprehensive set of requirements and constraints for a flight type mission. Design definition is for a modular vehicle temperature and humidity control subsystem, contaminant control equipment, a hydrogen depolarized cell CO2 concentrator, a water electrolysis oxygen generation subsystem, CO2 reduction equipment, and a pressure and composition control subsystem. Performance requirements are for support of a crew of six. Realistic leakage rates and metabolic activity cycles, cabin temperature selectability, and controlled cabin relative humidities are specified for the design. Operational aspects of the subsystem are discussed with emphasis given to the influence of a 180-day, maintainable requirement on system design. Consideration of flight vehicle type packaging, in flight maintenance, data management systems interface and fault detection capability, and electrical supply constraints is covered.

Self-acting and hydrodynamic shaft seals

Self-acting and hydrodynamic seals are described. The analytical procedures are outlined for obtaining a seal force balance and the operating film thickness. Particular attention is given to primary ring response (seal vibration) to rotating seat face runout. This response analysis revealed three different vibration modes. Proposed applications of self-acting seals in gas turbine engines and in rocket vehicle turbopumps are described. Also experimental data on self-acting face seals operating under simulated gas turbine conditions are given; these data show the feasibility of operating the seal at conditions of 345 newtons per square centimeter (500 psi) and 152 meters per second (500 ft/sec) sliding speed.

Aerodynamic characteristics of Lockheed delta-body orbiter and stage-and-one-half launch vehicle

An experimental wind tunnel test program was conducted to investigate the subsonic through high supersonic aerodynamic characteristics of the Lockheed delta lifting body orbiter and stage-and-one-half launch vehicle. Analyses and results of these data are presented. A 0.01-scale model of the LS 200-5 system was designed and fabricated for testing in wind tunnels. Orbiter and launch configurations were tested over a speed range of Mach 0.6 to 2.0, whereas only the orbiter was tested over a speed range of Mach 2.3 to 4.6. Six-component force and moment data, base pressures, and schlieren photos were obtained at various angles-of-attack and sideslip. A 0.03-scale model of the orbiter was also designed, fabricated, and tested in a wind tunnel. Six-component force and moment data, base pressure, and a limited amount of tuft flow visualization data were obtained on a variety of configuration combinations.
