Upper Limit for the 248 Cm( 50 Ti, x n) 298− x Og Reaction Cross Section

After the synthesis of element 113, nihonium (Nh) via the 209 Bi( 70 Zn,n) 278 Nh cold fusion reaction using the RIKEN heavy-ion Linear ACcelerator (RILAC) and the GAs-filled Recoil Ion Separator (GARIS), the search for the heaviest isotopes of oganesson was initiated with GARIS-II by means of the 248 Cm( 50 Ti,xn) 298−x Og fusion evaporation reaction. The optimal bombarding energy for the 50 Ti + 248 Cm reaction was determined from the quasielastic barrier distribution extracted from the excitation function of quasielastic backscattering. Here, this method optimizes the compound nucleus formation. The search for Og was conducted for 39 days on the basis of the experimentally derived 50 Ti beam energy of 227.9(5) MeV at the middle of 248 Cm target. A precise analysis of the dataset based on multiple event search strategies revealed no decay chains with a total dose on 248 Cm target of 4.93 × 10 18 50 Ti projectiles, reaching a sensitivity of 0.27 pb and a 1σ upper cross section limit of 0.50 pb.

Quasi-Coherent Fluctuations Limiting the Pedestal Growth on Alcator C-Mod: Experiment and Modeling

Performance predictions for future fusion devices rely on an accurate model of the pedestal structure. The leading candidate for predictive pedestal structure is EPED, and it is imperative to test the underlying hypotheses to further gain confidence for ITER projections. Here, we present experimental work testing one of the EPED hypotheses, namely the existence of a soft limit set by microinstabilities such as the kinetic ballooning mode (KBM). This work extends recent work on Alcator C-Mod [Diallo, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., , (2014), 115001], to include detailed measurements of the edge fluctuations and comparisons of edge simulation codes and experimental observations.

Design Guide for Pitch-Up Evaluation and Investigation at High Subsonic Speeds of Possible Limitations Due to Wing-Aspect-Ratio Variations

A design guide is suggested as a basis for indicating combinations of airplane design variables for which the possibilities of pitch-up are minimized for tail-behind-wing and tailless airplane configurations. The guide specifies wing plan forms that would be expected to show increased tail-off stability with increasing lift and plan forms that show decreased tail-off stability with increasing lift. Boundaries indicating tail-behind-wing positions that should be considered along with given tail-off characteristics also are suggested. An investigation of one possible limitation of the guide with respect to the effects of wing-aspect-ratio variations on the contribution to stability of a high tail has been made in the Langley high-speed 7- by 10-foot tunnel through a Mach number range from 0.60 to 0.92. The measured pitching-moment characteristics were found to be consistent with those of the design guide through the lift range for aspect ratios from 3.0 to 2.0. However, a configuration with an aspect ratio of 1.55 failed t o provide the predicted pitch-up warning characterized by sharply increasing stability at the high lifts following the initial stall before pitching up. Thus, it appears that the design guide presented herein might not be applicable when the wing aspect ratios lower than about 2.0.

Cam-operated limit switch features safe fuse replacement

Two hermetically sealed, short travel, limit switches permit fuse replacement without danger of a spark or arcing. The switches are wired in parallel circuits and actuated by manually operated cams containing the circuit fuses.
