Software development for avionics SSME control and diagnostics

A study was made of software to integrate data from about 500 sensors that monitor the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) and to make decisions for real-time control. Such software is expected to be applicable to other distributed systems as well. This study investigated the use of pattern recognition and other techniques to detect trends that could lead to major damage to the SSME and which would allow an orderly shutdown of the SSME before such damage could occur.

StarPlan: A model-based diagnostic system for spacecraft

The Sunnyvale Division of Ford Aerospace created a model-based reasoning capability for diagnosing faults in space systems. The approach employs reasoning about a model of the domain (as it is designed to operate) to explain differences between expected and actual telemetry; i.e., to identify the root cause of the discrepancy (at an appropriate level of detail) and determine necessary corrective action. A development environment, named Paragon, was implemented to support both model-building and reasoning. The major benefit of the model-based approach is the capability for the intelligent system to handle faults that were not anticipated by a human expert. The feasibility of this approach for diagnosing problems in a spacecraft was demonstrated in a prototype system, named StarPlan. Reasoning modules within StarPlan detect anomalous telemetry, establish goals for returning the telemetry to nominal values, and create a command plan for attaining the goals. Before commands are implemented, their effects are simulated to assure convergence toward the goal. After the commands are issued, the telemetry is monitored to assure that the plan is successful. These features of StarPlan, along with associated concerns, issues and future directions, are discussed.

Automated extraction of knowledge for model-based diagnostics

The concept of accessing computer aided design (CAD) design databases and extracting a process model automatically is investigated as a possible source for the generation of knowledge bases for model-based reasoning systems. The resulting system, referred to as automated knowledge generation (AKG), uses an object-oriented programming structure and constraint techniques as well as internal database of component descriptions to generate a frame-based structure that describes the model. The procedure has been designed to be general enough to be easily coupled to CAD systems that feature a database capable of providing label and connectivity data from the drawn system. The AKG system is capable of defining knowledge bases in formats required by various model-based reasoning tools.

Spectroscopic study of combustion diagnostics on hydroxyl radicals

Experimental observations of propane-air flames were performed. Measurements of hydroxyl (OH) radical concentration were made using resonance line absorption techniques. A microwave-pumped low pressure discharge in argon and water vapor is employed to produce strong OH radical band radiation in the 308 nm region. This radiation is transmitted through the plume and absorption data are taken at various radical positions using an optical multichannel analyzer. This absorption data is used to compute OH number density using a model for the absorption band characteristics as a function of temperature based on an atlas of line strengths. A numerical computation of flow fields, temperature profile and OH number density is carried out by using a technique of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results of CFD computation are good compared with experimental observation with a good agreement.

Optical emission diagnostics of electron cyclotron resonance and glow discharge plasmas for a-Si:H and a-SiC:H film depositions

It is demonstrated that the steady-state and kinetic characteristics of ECR (electron cyclotron resonance) and RF glow discharge plasmas can be readily monitored by OES (optical emission spectroscopy) in real time during a-Si:H and a-SiC:H film depositions using an OMA detection system. The ECR and RF glow discharge plasmas used for a-Si:H and a-SiC:H film depositions were studied by monitoring the emission of SiH(asterisk), H(asterisk), H(asterisk)2, and CH(asterisk) excited states. The OES of the ECR plasma shows a strong emission at 434 nm from H(asterisk), which is not detectable in the glow discharge plasma. Steady-state OES studies have established preliminary correlations between SiH(asterisk) and CH(asterisk) emission intensities and the film deposition rate. Transient OES spectra of SiH4 and CH4 plasmas have shown different kinetics in SiH(asterisk) and CH(asterisk) emission intensities. Transient studies of the SiH(asterisk) emission intensity have indicated that additional mechanisms for producing the SiH(asterisk) species become evident in hydrogen-diluted silane plasmas.

Silane and germane plasma diagnostics for depositing photosensitive a-SiGe:H films

Highly photosensitive a-SiGe:H films with a light-to-dark conductivity ratio of 8 x 103 and an optical bandgap of 1.40 eV have been produced by RF glow discharge using hydrogen dilution of SiH4 and GeH4 mixed gas plasma. The critical role of hydrogen dilution in GeH4 containing plasmas is to suppress the gas-phase polymerization and promote the incorporation of Ge into the film. It is observed that inelastic laser light scattering of the RF plasma is a sensitive method for monitoring the onset of the gas-phase polymerization. In situ coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy measurements have shown that the dissociation rate of GeH4 is a factor of three larger than that of SiH4.

Flow diagnostics in unseeded air

Several approaches are presented for the quantitative measurement of flowfield parameters in high-speed flows. The techniques are developed for the study of air flows in the Mach 2 to Mach 3 regime and can be extended to the hypersonic and subsonic regimes in a straightforward manner. Instantaneous two-dimensional cross-sectional images of the density using UV Rayleigh scattering and the measurement of velocity profiles using the RELIEF technique are shown. The RELIEF technique employs two high-powered lasers separated in frequency by the vibrational frequency of oxygen molecules to write lines across the flowfield by stimulated Raman scattering. The preliminary results indicate that the UV Rayleigh scattering may also be extended to the measurement of velocity and temperature fields by using an atomic or molecular absorption filter window, and that the RELIEF technique can be extended to marking shaped volumetric points or arrays of points in the flowfield for velocity and vorticity measurements.

Nature of convection-stabilized dc arcs in dual-flow nozzle geometry. I - The cold flow field and dc arc characteristics. II - Optical diagnostics and theory

Steady-state low-current air arcs in a dual-flow nozzle system are studied experimentally. The cold flow field with no arc is investigated using a 12.7-mm diameter dual-flow nozzle in a steady-flow facility. Mach number and mass flux distributions are determined for various nozzle-pressure ratios and nozzle-gap spacing. It is found that the shock waves in the converging-diverging nozzles result in a decrease in overal resistance by about 15 percent. Also, Schlieren and differential interferometry techniques are used to visualize the density gradients within the arc plasma and thermal mantle. Both optical techniques reveal a laminar arc structure for a reservoir pressure of 1 atm at various current levels. Experimentally determined axial static pressure and cold-flow mass flux rate distributions and a channel-flow model with constant arc temperatre are used to solve the energy integral for the arc radius as a function of axial distance. The arc electric field strength, voltage, resistance, and power are determined with Ohm's law and the total heat transfer is related to arc power.

Use of piezoelectric foil for flow diagnostics

A laboratory investigation was conducted to characterize two piezoelectric-film sensor configurations, a rigidly mounted sensor and a sensor mounted over an air cavity. The sensors are evaluated for sensitivity and frequency response, and methods to optimize data are presented. The cavity-mounted sensor exhibited a superior frequency response and was more sensitive to normal pressure fluctuations and less sensitive to vibrations through the structure. Both configurations were sensitive to large-scale structural vibrations. Flight-test data are shown for cavity-mounted sensors, illustrating practical aspects to consider when designing sensors for application in such harsh environments. The relation of the data to skin friction and maximum shear stress, transition detection, and turbulent viscous layers is derived through analysis of the flight data.

A simulation and diagnostic study of water vapor image dry bands

Limited Area Mesoscale Prediction System model simulation and a special 3-hr radiosonde data set were used to investigate warm bands in the 6.7-micron water-vapor satellite imagery on March 6-7, 1982. It was found that the model reproduces major characteristics of the observed blackbody temperature, T(B), field. A 'development' dry image feature was found to occur in conjunction with an upper level shortwave trough, and an 'advective' feature was found associated with a polar jet streak. Both model and observed T(B) features were associated with vorticity maxima.

Three-dimensional quantitative flow diagnostics

The principles, capabilities, and practical implementation of advanced measurement techniques for the quantitative characterization of three-dimensional flows are reviewed. Consideration is given to particle, Rayleigh, and Raman scattering; fluorescence; flow marking by H2 bubbles, photochromism, photodissociation, and vibrationally excited molecules; light-sheet volume imaging; and stereo imaging. Also discussed are stereo schlieren methods, holographic particle imaging, optical tomography, acoustic and magnetic-resonance imaging, and the display of space-filling data. Extensive diagrams, graphs, photographs, sample images, and tables of numerical data are provided.

A diagnostic for denitrification in the winter polar stratospheres

The pairwise correlation of NO(y) and N2O data from the Southern and Northern Hemispheres is presented. Both data sets show a linear correlation region, defined as a reference state, and regions of denitrification where the correlation breaks down. Using two-dimensional photochemical model simulations of the atmosphere, a similar linear correlation is found between NO(y) and N2O, thereby establishing a theoretical framework for the reference state. This general approach, which can be extended to other pairs of molecules, should prove to be powerful in further comparisons of aircraft data with numerical models.

Rocket engine diagnostics using neural networks

Two problems in applying neural networks to fault detection and identification are (1) the complexity of the sensor data to fault mapping and (2) the lack of sufficient training data. Here, methods are derived and tested in an architecture which addresses these two problems. First, the sensor data to fault mapping is decomposed into three simpler mappings which perform sensor data compression, hypothesis generation, and sensor fusion. Efficient training is performed for each mapping separately. Second, the neural network which performs sensor fusion is structured to detect new unknown faults for which training examples were not presented. These methods were tested on a task of fault detection and identification in the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). Results indicate that the decomposed neural network architecture can be trained efficiently, can identify faults for which it has been trained, and can detect the occurrence of faults for which it has not been trained.

Diagnostics and performance of a 1/4-scale MPD thruster

The primary purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance and scaling characteristics of a 1/4-scale magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thruster operating with and without applied magnetic nozzle fields. The experiment was carried out with separate pulse forming networks for the thruster and the applied field solenoidal coil. A strong correlation of impact pressure signal with thruster current was noted. Also striking was the larger impact signal when the magnetic nozzle field was applied. Measurements of N(e) and T(e) from Langmuir probes have been made. Compatible interpretation of pressure with N(e), T(e), allow local velocity to be mapped, thus enhancing understanding of the acceleration process.

A high-speed spatial (linear) scanning pyrometer: A tool for diagnostics, temperature mapping, and property determinations at high temperatures

Development of a fast spatial scanning pyrometer for temperature measurements above 1500 K is described. The salient features of the pyrometer are: (1) it measures spectral radiance temperature (at 0.65 micron) at 1024 points along a straight line (25 mm long) on the target; (2) it has no moving parts and uses a self-scanning linear array of silicon photodiodes as the detector; (3) its output is recorded digitally every 1 microsec with a full-scale resolution of about 1 part in 4000, permitting performance of a complete cycle of measurements (1024 points) in about 1 ms. Operational characteristics of the pyrometer are given. Examples of measurements of the temperature along rapidly heated (resistive self-heating) specimens (rod, tube, strip) are presented. Potential use of the pyrometer in the experiments, both ground-based and in microgravity, requiring temperature mapping and property distribution of the specimen at high temperatures is discussed.

In analyzing the baseline Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) command and control architecture, various processes are found which would be enhanced by the use of knowledge based system methods of implementation. The most suitable process for prototyping using rule based methods are documented, while domain knowledge resources and other practical considerations are examined. Requirements for a prototype rule based software system are documented. These requirements reflect Space Station Freedom ECLSS software and hardware development efforts, and knowledge based system requirements. A quick prototype knowledge based system environment is researched and developed.
