TERSSE: Definition of the Total Earth Resources System for the Shuttle Era. Volume 6: An Early Shuttle Pallet Concept for the Earth Resources Program

A space shuttle sortie mission which can be performed inexpensively in the early shuttle era and which, if the necessary intermediate steps are accomplished provides a major technological advance for the user organization-the U.S. Bureau of Census is described. The orbital configuration created for the Urban Land Use/1980 Census mission is illustrated including sensors and ground support equipment along with the information flow for the mission. Factors discussed include: specific Census Bureau functions to be supported by the mission; hardware and flight operations necessary for implementation of the mission; and integration of the TERSSE pallet into a shuttle mission.

TERSSE: Definition of the Total Earth Resources System for the Shuttle Era. Volume 7: User Models: A System Assessment

User models defined as any explicit process or procedure used to transform information extracted from remotely sensed data into a form useful as a resource management information input are discussed. The role of the user models as information, technological, and operations interfaces between the TERSSE and the resource managers is emphasized. It is recommended that guidelines and management strategies be developed for a systems approach to user model development.

TERSSE: Definition of the Total Earth Resources System for the Shuttle Era. Volume 8: User's Mission and System Requirements Data (appendix A of Volume 3)

A computer printout is presented of the mission requirement for the TERSSE missions and their associated user tasks. The data included in the data base represents a broad-based attempt to define the amount, extent, and type of information needed for an earth resources management program in the era of the space shuttle. An effort was made to consider all aspects of remote sensing and resource management; because of its broad scope, it is not intended that the data be used without verification for in-depth studies of particular missions and/or users. The data base represents the quantitative structure necessary to define the TERSSE architecture and requirements, and to an overall integrated view of the earth resources technology requirements of the 1980's.

Studies Relative to the Radiosensitivity of Man: Based on Retrospective Evaluations of Therapeutic and Accidental Total-Body Irradiation

The radiobiologic studies carried out with joint (AEC) ERDA and NASA support during the years 1964 to 1974 at the Medical Division of Oak Ridge Associated Universities are presented. The physiologic data generated were similar in many ways to those previously observed in other medical radiobiologic experiences. They differed, however, in the methods of data acquisition and analysis. Instead of more conventional analytical methods, pulmonary impedance was recorded and quantitated as a measure of radiation-induced gastrointestinal distress and fatiguability. While refinements in dose response related to gastrointestinal distress were accomplished, it was also found that through the use of Fourier analysis of pulmonary impedance waveform GI distress could easily be recognized and quantified even when the initial stages of nausea were below the subjects subjective level of recognition. The results demonstrate that change in pulmonary impedance waveform closely parallel well-defined stages of GI distress, i.e., initial nausea, a progressive increase in nausea, and finally vomiting episodes.

Determining total carbon in hydrazine

Procedure incorporates modified pyrolysis train. Samples are vaporized before entering furnace to be pyrolyzed at 850 C + or - 25 C. Direct collection of pyrolyzed gas reduces loss of carbon dioxide. Infrared spectroscopy can be used to analyze samples for carbon dioxide content.

Airship logistics: The LTA vehicle; a total cargo system

Design considerations for logistics are dealt with as they pertain to the large rigid LTA vehicle as either a commercial or military cargo carrier. Pertinent factors discussed are: (1) the basic mission; (2) types of payload; (3) the payload space in regards to configuration and sizing, its capacity, and its loadability. A logistic capability comparison of selected cargo airships versus jumbo jets is also made.

Performance of the Landsat-Data Collection System in a Total System Context

The author has identified the following significant results. This experiment was, and continues to be, an integration of the LANDSAT-DCS with the data collection and processing system of the Geological Survey. Although an experimental demonstration, it was a successful integration of a satellite relay system that is capable of continental data collection, and an existing governmental nationwide operational data processing and distributing networks. The Survey's data processing system uses a large general purpose computer with insufficient redundancy for 24-hour a day, 7 day a week operation. This is significant, but soluble obstacle to converting the experimental integration of the system to an operational integration.

Literature review of some selected types of results and statistical analyses of total-ozone data

The depletion of ozone in the stratosphere is examined, and causes for the depletion are cited. Ground station and satellite measurements of ozone, which are taken on a worldwide basis, are discussed. Instruments used in ozone measurement are discussed, such as the Dobson spectrophotometer, which is credited with providing the longest and most extensive series of observations for ground based observation of stratospheric ozone. Other ground based instruments used to measure ozone are also discussed. The statistical differences of ground based measurements of ozone from these different instruments are compared to each other, and to satellite measurements. Mathematical methods (i.e., trend analysis or linear regression analysis) of analyzing the variability of ozone concentration with respect to time and lattitude are described. Various time series models which can be employed in accounting for ozone concentration variability are examined.

TERSSE. Definition of the total earth resources system for the shuttle era. Volume 9: Earth resources shuttle applications

The use of the space shuttle for the Earth Resources Program is discussed. Several problems with respect to payload selection, integration, and mission planning were studied. Each of four shuttle roles in the sortie mode were examined and projected into an integrated shuttle program. Several representative Earth Resources missions were designed which would use the shuttle sortie as a platform and collectively include the four shuttle roles. An integrated flight program based on these missions was then developed for the first two years of shuttle flights. A set of broad implications concerning the uses of the shuttle for Earth Resources studies resulted.

The variability of the total flux density and polarization of Jupiter's decimetric radio emission

Results are presented for a continuing program to monitor the Jovian 13-cm flux at weekly intervals and for an observational program to measure the linear polarization on an annual basis. The initial results of these programs are compared with existing data. Some implications about the radiation belts are discussed. When the new data are combined with previously published 11- and 21-cm measurements, it is found that the nature of the time variations during the past 13 years is similar but not identical at these wavelengths and that there is no convincing evidence that the variations are correlated with either solar activity or Jupiter's distance from the sun. The peak degree of polarization of the synchrotron has not changed more than 1% from the mean value of 24.5% during the 12-year interval considered.
