Standard services for the capture, processing, and distribution of packetized telemetry data

Standard functional services for the capture, processing, and distribution of packetized data are discussed with particular reference to the future implementation of packet processing systems, such as those for the Space Station Freedom. The major functions are listed under the following major categories: input processing, packet processing, and output processing. A functional block diagram of a packet data processing facility is presented, showing the distribution of the various processing functions as well as the primary data flow through the facility.

Neutral buoyancy methodology for studying satellite servicing EVA crewmember interfaces

Current economic constraints indicate the need for incorporating the satellite servicing philosophy of commonality within the design of spacecraft subsytems. This philosophy is essential for conserving resources including hardware/software development and implementation costs, on-orbit and ground-based manpower, crew training/testing time, and documentation. In addition, spacecraft subsystem commonality may be coupled with standardization of operation procedures, and test and verification techniques for spacecraft design. Several spacecraft have adopted this practice, including Hubble Space Telescope, Space Station Freedom, and the Explorer Platform. As these and other programs continue and if effective crew interfaces and procedures are clearly and consistently defined, crew retraining for similar spacecraft subsystems will lessen, and procurement efforts will diminish. A relatively high fidelity zero-gravity simulation using water immersion is available to establish crew interfaces economically. The flexibility and utility of this space simulation medium for planning and assisting on-orbit operations was exemplified by astronaut evaluations of potential EVA electrical connectors. The testing was conducted at a NASA underwater neutral buoyancy training facility.

Type of service wide area networking

A variety of long-distance types of circuits can be used for data communication. A description is given of an experiment which optimizes the simultaneous use of terrestrial and satellite circuits in a TCP/IP network. Traditionally, it has been difficult to use effectively the full capacity of high-bandwidth satellite circuits, due to long round-trip times coupled with TCP window-size limitations. The experiment significantly reduced the problem, and the result was effective use of all the available bandwidth and a satellite circuit for a single data transfer. This experiment also demonstrates the use of multiple T1 communication lines and type of service networking over these lines.

Finding fixed satellite service orbital allotments with a k-permutation algorithm

A satellite system synthesis problem, the satellite location problem (SLP), is addressed. In SLP, orbital locations (longitudes) are allotted to geostationary satellites in the fixed satellite service. A linear mixed-integer programming model is presented that views SLP as a combination of two problems: the problem of ordering the satellites and the problem of locating the satellites given some ordering. A special-purpose heuristic procedure, a k-permutation algorithm, has been developed to find solutions to SLPs. Solutions to small sample problems are presented and analyzed on the basis of calculated interferences.

Flight service evaluation of composite helicopter components

An assessment is presented of ten composite tail rotor spars and four horizontal stabilizers exposed to the effects of in-flight commercial service for up to nine years to establish realistic environmental factors for use in future designs. This evaluation is supported by test results of helicopter components and panels which have been exposed to outdoor environmental effects since 1979. Full scale static and fatigue tests were conducted on graphite/epoxy and Kevlar/epoxy composite components removed from Sikorsky Model S-76 helicopters in commercial operations off the Gulf Coast of Louisiana. Small scale static and fatigue tests were conducted on coupons obtained from panels exposed to outdoor conditions in Stratford, CT and West Palm Beach, Florida. The panel materials and ply configurations were representative of the S-76 components. The results are discussed of moisture analyses and strength tests on both the S-76 components and composite panels after up to nine years of outdoor exposure. Full scale tests performed on the helicopter components did not disclose any significant reductions from the baseline strengths. The results increased confidence in the long term durability of advanced composite materials in helicopter structural applications.

A description of results from the handbook on signal fade degradation for the land mobile satellite service

During the period 1983 to 1988 a series of experiments were undertaken by the Electrical Engineering Research Laboratory of the University of Texas and the Applied Physics Laboratory of the Johns Hopkins University in which propagation impairment effects were investigated for the Land Mobile Satellite Service (LMSS). The results of these efforts have appeared in a number of publications, technical reports, and conference proceedings. The rationale for the development of a 'handbook' was to locate the salient and useful results in one single document for use by communications engineers, designers of planned LMSS communications systems, and modelers of propagation effects. Where applicable, the authors have also drawn from the results of other related investigations. A description of sample results contained in this handbook which should be available in the latter part of 1990 is given.

Design and implementation of interface units for high speed fiber optics local area networks and broadband integrated services digital networks

The design and implementation of interface units for high speed Fiber Optic Local Area Networks and Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks are discussed. During the last years, a number of network adapters that are designed to support high speed communications have emerged. This approach to the design of a high speed network interface unit was to implement package processing functions in hardware, using VLSI technology. The VLSI hardware implementation of a buffer management unit, which is required in such architectures, is described.

The development test flight of the flight telerobotic servicer

The Development Test Flight (DTF-1) is the first of two shuttle flights to test operations of the Flight Telerobotic Servicer (FTS) in space and to demonstrate its capabilities in performing tasks for Space Station Freedom. The DTF-1 system, which Martin Marietta Astronautics Group is designing and building for the Goddard Space Flight Center, will be flown in December, 1991, as an attached payload on the shuttle. The design of the DTF-1 system, the tests to be performed, and the data to be gathered are discussed.

The flight telerobotic servicer and technology transfer

The Flight Telerobotic Servicer (FTS) project at the Goddard Space Flight Center is developing an advanced telerobotic system to assist in and reduce crew extravehicular activity (EVA) for Space Station Freedom (SSF). The FTS will provide a telerobotic capability in the early phases of the SSF program and will be employed for assembly, maintenance, and inspection applications. The current state of space technology and the general nature of the FTS tasks dictate that the FTS be designed with sophisticated teleoperational capabilities for its internal primary operating mode. However, technologies such as advanced computer vision and autonomous planning techniques would greatly enhance the FTS capabilities to perform autonomously in less structured work environments. Another objective of the FTS program is to accelerate technology transfer from research to U.S. industry.

Recommended fine positioning test for the Development Test Flight (DTF-1) of the NASA Flight Telerobotic Servicer (FTS)

Test procedures are proposed for the NASA DTF (Development Test Flight)-1 positioning tests of the FTS (Flight Telerobotic Servicer). The unique problems associated with the DTF-1 mission are discussed, standard robot performance tests and terminology are reviewed and a very detailed description of flight-like testing and analysis is presented. The major technical problem associated with DTF-1 is that only one position sensor can be used, which will be fixed at one location, with a working volume which is probably smaller than some of the robot errors to be measured. Radiation heating of the arm and the sensor could also cause distortions that would interfere with the test. Two robot performance testing committees have established standard testing procedures relevant to the DTF-1. Due to the technical problems associated with DTF-1, these procedures cannot be applied directly. These standard tests call for the use of several test positions at specific locations. Only one position, that of the position sensor, can be used by DTF-1. Off-line programming accuracy might be impossible to measure and in that case it will have to be replaced by forward kinetics accuracy.
