A reactive ferroelectric tuner for microphonics compensation

Jefferson Lab (JLab) is actively pursuing an extensive research program focused on developing advanced Nb₃Sn superconducting technology for particle accel-eration. Due to the brittle nature of Nb₃Sn coatings, a Ferroelectric Tuner (FRT) currently represents the most viable approach for microphonics compensation in these next-generation cavities. We suggest a novel, fast-responding FRT integrated directly into the main coupler, eliminating the need for an additional RF port. Leveraging a unique RF design based on a magic-T configuration, this advanced FRT will enable micro-phonics compensation in the ±30 Hz range without undesirable changes to the external quality factor.

Non-reactive facet specific adsorption as a route to remediation of chlorinated organic contaminants

The present work quantifies metal-contaminant interactions between palladium substrates and three salient chlorinated organic contaminants, namely trichloroethylene 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene (TCB), and 3,3′,4,4′-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB77). Given that Pd is one of the conventional catalytically active materials known for contaminant removal, maximizing catalytic efficiency through optimal adsorption dynamics reduces the cost of remediation of contaminants that are persistent water pollutants chronically affecting public health. Adsorption efficiency analyses from all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations advance the understanding of reaction mechanisms available from density functional theory (DFT) calculations to an extractable feature scale that can fit the parametric design of supported metal catalytic systems and feed into high throughput catalyst selection. Data on residence time, site-specific adsorption, binding energies, packing geometries, orientation profiles, and the effect of adsorbate size show the anomalous behaviour of organic contaminant adsorption on the undercoordinated {110} surface as compared to the {111} and {100} surfaces. The intermolecular interaction within contaminants from molecular dynamics simulation exhibits refreshing results than ordinary single molecule density functional theory calculation. Since complete adsorption and dechlorination is an essential step for chlorinated organic contaminant remediation pathways, the presented profiles provide essential information for designing efficient remediation systems through facet-controlled palladium nanoparticles.

The Relationship Between Perceived Control and Hypothalamic–Pituitary–Adrenal Axis Reactivity to the Trier Social Stress Test in Healthy Young Adults

Psychological factors can modulate the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis activity toward stressors. Animal studies demonstrated that uncontrollability was one critical factor associated with HPA axis stress response, but the results in human studies were inconsistent. The current study adopted a standardized laboratory stress induction procedure, the Trier Social Stress Test (the TSST), as the stressor to regulate the objective controllability level, and young adult participants were asked to rate their subjectively perceived control level toward the stressor and measured their cortisol stress responses ( N =54; 19 females and 35 males) to address this concern. Results showed that participants’ perceived control on the TSST was related to the cortisol stress response. In other words, under the stress of a certain objective controllability level, the lower the subjectively perceived control level, the greater the HPA axis response. This finding suggested that, in addition to objective controllability, subjectively perceived control is a psychological factor that regulates activation of the HPA axis in young adults.

Model Quality and Measurement Density Impact on Volt/Volt Ampere Reactive Optimization Performance

The operation of the utility grid is being reshaped by the continuous addition of distributed energy resources and advanced metering infrastructure, which challenge existing grid control strategies. Some utilities deploy advanced distribution management systems (ADMS) to assist with the consolidation of various applications and to augment situational awareness in response to the new power delivery dynamics. An ADMS is an integrated software platform that provides utilities with a way to enhance their reliability, control, and optimization with advanced applications, such as volt/VAR optimization (VVO). A VVO application could serve as a vehicle to deliver cost savings by providing the utility with a method to reduce rates by controlling the voltage and decreasing the energy usage in their service territory. Some utilities are reluctant to integrate an ADMS, because it is a significant investment that requires approval from the public regulatory commission and/or their customers. This paper evaluates the impact on VVO performance when using a lower-quality network model supplemented with additional measurements, which could provide an implementation for cost savings. The results show that a better model quality would provide the highest energy savings; however, some level of telemetry is necessary in all scenarios to prevent voltage exceedances.

Assessment of Hydroxyl Radical Reactivity in Sulfur-Containing Amino Acid Models Under Acidic pH

Methionine residues in proteins and peptides are frequently oxidized by losing one electron. The presence of nearby amide groups is crucial for this process, enabling methionine to participate in long-range electron transfer. Hydroxyl radical (HO•) plays an important role being generated in aerobic organisms by cellular metabolisms as well as by exogenous sources such as ionizing radiations. The reaction of HO• with methionine mainly affords the one-electron oxidation of the thioether moiety through two consecutive steps (HO• addition to the sulfur followed by HO− elimination). We recently investigated the reaction of HO• with model peptides mimicking methionine and its cysteine-methylated counterpart, i.e., CH3C(O)NHCHXC(O)NHCH3, where X = CH2CH2SCH3 or CH2SCH3 at pH 7. The reaction mechanism varied depending on the distance between the sulfur atom and the peptide backbone, but, for a better understanding of various suggested equilibria, the analysis of the flux of protons is required. We extended the previous study to the present work at pH 4 using pulse radiolysis techniques with conductivity and optical detection of transient species, as well as analysis of final products by LC-MS and high-resolution MS/MS following γ-radiolysis. Comparing all the data provided a better understanding of how the presence of nearby amide groups influences the one-electron oxidation mechanism.

CMOS-Compatible Ultrathin Superconducting NbN Thin Films Deposited by Reactive Ion Sputtering on 300 mm Si Wafer

We report a milestone in achieving large-scale, ultrathin (~5 nm) superconducting NbN thin films on 300 mm Si wafers using a high-volume manufacturing (HVM) industrial physical vapor deposition (PVD) system. The NbN thin films possess remarkable structural uniformity and consistently high superconducting quality across the entire 300 mm Si wafer, by incorporating an AlN buffer layer. High-resolution X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses unveiled enhanced crystallinity of (111)-oriented δ-phase NbN with the AlN buffer layer. Notably, NbN films deposited on AlN-buffered Si substrates exhibited a significantly elevated superconducting critical temperature (~2 K higher for the 10 nm NbN) and a higher upper critical magnetic field or H c2 (34.06 T boost in H c2 for the 50 nm NbN) in comparison with those without AlN. These findings present a promising pathway for the integration of quantum-grade superconducting NbN films with the existing 300 mm CMOS Si platform for quantum information applications.

Measurements of Radical Reactivity with an Imine, (CF 3 ) 2 CNH: Rate Constants for Chlorine Atoms and Hydroxyl Radicals and the Global Warming Potential

The rate constant kOH for the reaction of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroprop-2-imine with OH radicals was measured relative to two reference compounds, CH 3 F and CH 3 CHF 2 , to be k OH = (4.2 ± 1.1) × 10 −14 cm 3 molecule −1 s −1 at 295 K. This implies an atmospheric lifetime with respect to consumption by OH of 0.75 years. Reaction with Cl atoms yielded k Cl = (7.9 ± 1.7) × 10 −16 cm 3 molecule −1 s −1 at 295 K, and reaction with O 3 has an upper limit of k O3 < 4 × 10 −23 cm 3 molecule −1 s −1 , so that the atmospheric consumption by Cl and O 3 is negligibly slow. Absolute infrared cross sections of the imine yield a radiative efficiency of 0.34 W m −2 ppb −1 , which is corrected to 0.23 W m −2 ppb −1 for the effects of atmospheric lifetime. The imine’s corresponding 100-year global warming potential is 64 ± 19. This value is an upper limit, given that heterogenous atmospheric removal paths, such as hydrolysis in water droplets, are not included.
