Theoretical Perspective of Promoting Direct Methane-to-Methanol Conversion at Complex Metal Oxide–Metal Interfaces

Direct methane conversion to methanol has been considered as an effective and economic way to release greenhouse effects and current high demand on methanol in industry. However, the process has long been challenging due to lack of viable catalysts to compromise the activation of methane that typically occurs high temperatures and retaining of produced methanol that requires mild conditions. Here, this perspective demonstrates an effective strategy to promote direct methane to methanol conversion by engineering the active sites and chemical environments at complex metal oxide - copper oxide - copper interfaces. Such effort strongly depends on the extensive theoretical studies by combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations and kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations to provide in-depth understanding of reaction mechanism and active sites, which built the strong basis to enable the identification of design principles and advance the catalyst optimization for selective CH 4 -to-CH 3 OH conversion.

Laser Direct Write Synthesis of Lead Halide Perovskites

Lead halide perovskites are increasingly considered for applications beyond photovoltaics, for example, light emission and detection, where an ability to pattern and prototype microscale geometries can facilitate the incorporation of this class of materials into devices. In this study, we demonstrate laser direct write of lead halide perovskites, a remarkably simple procedure that takes advantage of the inverse dependence between perovskite solubility and temperature by using a laser to induce localized heating of an absorbing substrate. We also demonstrate arbitrary pattern formation of crystalline CH 3 NH 3 PbBr 3 on a range of substrates and fabricate and characterize a microscale photodetector using this approach. This direct write methodology provides a path forward for the prototyping and production of perovskite-based devices.

Direct Visualization of Counter-Propagating Surface Plasmons in Real Space-Time

We deploy two-dimensional nano-hole arrays as resonant surface plasmon polariton (SPP) couplers that enable counter-propagation and interference-free imaging of SPP wave-packets. We monitor the spatiotemporal evolution of the resulting SPPs using two-color photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM). The measurements track the electric field envelope of the SPP in real space and time and enable direct characterization of their spatiotemporal properties in a regime where the SPP wave-packet is the principle observable. We provide an analysis of the observables for both the co- and counter-propagating directions via SPP trajectories that are recorded in tandem. Our results highlight the advantages of isolating SPPs through counter-propagation, where field-SPP interactions are suppressed.

Ultrathin and Conformal Initiated Chemical-Vapor-Deposited Layers of Systematically Varied Surface Energy for Controlling the Directed Self-Assembly of Block CoPolymers

Directed self-assembly (DSA) of block copolymer (BCP) thin films is a promising approach to enable next-generation patterning at increasingly smaller length scales. DSA utilizes interfacial wetting layers to force the BCP domains to self-assemble with the desired orientation with respect to the substrate. Here, we demonstrate that initiated chemical-vapor-deposited (iCVD) polydivinylbenzene (pDVB) ultrathin films can direct the self-assembly of poly(styrene-block-methylmethacrylate). Here, we found that the methyl radicals formed at increased filament temperatures during the iCVD process result in the backbone methylation of pDVB. By tuning the degree of backbone methylation, we systematically changed the wetting properties of the iCVD pDVB from a slight poly(methylmethacrylate) preference to complete poly(styrene) preference. Additionally, we utilize the conformal nature of the iCVD to form a wetting layer over a topographical line and space pattern, which is subsequently used to produce self-assembled BCP films with both perpendicular orientation and long-range alignment.

Unconventional Complex Coacervation between Neutral Polymer and Inorganic Polyoxometalate in Aqueous Solution via Direct Water Mediation

Water, specifically in a hydration shell, is critical for many biological supramolecular aggregations in nature, where water can directly mediate intermolecular association via hydrogen bonding and is regarded as “structured water”. Conversely, little has been reported on the biomimetic water-mediated supramolecular assembly with adequately high water content to date, because of the competing thermodynamic processes of water hydration and water as a building block to participate in self-assembly. In this work, we explore water-mediated complexation based on entropy-driven biphasic coacervate formation using highly hydrophilic neutral polymer and inorganic mineral-analogous nanoclusters. For the first time (to the best of our knowledge), nonelectrostatic liquid–liquid separating coacervate formation is demonstrated between polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyoxometalate (POM) nanoclusters in aqueous solutions of varied PEG and POM concentrations, POM types, and aqueous medium conditions. Comprehensive characterization using fluorescence microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, calorimetry, and other techniques has confirmed that the compositions, microstructure, and thermodynamics of PEG–POM complex coacervation are highly similar to entropy-driven complex coacervation between oppositely charged polyelectrolytes in aqueous solution. However, the effect of heavy water on critical POM concentration for the onset of coacervate formation suggests that water, instead of the counter ions as commonly debated for polyelectrolyte complex coacervation, is responsible for PEG–POM coacervate formation. Specifically, structured water works as a hydrogen bond donor for both highly hydrated PEG and POM to directly mediate the PEG–water–POM association, resulting in the release of excess hydrated water for entropy-driven PEG–POM complex coacervation. Furthermore, water-mediated complex coacervation could be developed as a general and simple strategy to build biomimetic hybrid nanomaterials with high water content for various applications from energy-related functional nanomaterials to biomedical ramification.

Direct Correlation of Charge Carrier Transport to Local Crystal Quality in Lead Halide Perovskites

Although solution processing methods provide an attractive route toward development of low-cost functional materials, these accessible fabrication approaches can engender high concentrations of microscopic structural defects that are detrimental to performance. In lead halide perovskites, structural disorder derived from solution processing has been implicated as an important determiner of photophysical properties. However, a direct correlation between the functional properties of these materials and the local crystal structure in which non-equilibrium states evolve has remained elusive, in part because structural heterogeneities occur on length scales that defy conventional characterization techniques. To address this knowledge gap, in this work we have combined ultrafast pump–probe microscopy and electron backscattering diffraction to directly correlate charge carrier transport with the local diffraction pattern contrast, an indicator of crystal quality. Spatial correlation of these measurements strongly suggests that even on individual single crystal CsPbBr3 domains, microscopic variability in the crystal quality profoundly impacts the efficiency of charge carrier transport.

Directed Assembly of Nanoparticle Catalysts on Nanowire Photoelectrodes for Photoelectrochemical CO 2 Reduction

Reducing carbon dioxide with a multicomponent artificial photosynthetic system, closely mimicking nature, represents a promising approach for energy storage. Previous works have focused on exploiting light-harvesting semiconductor nanowires (NW) for photoelectrochemical water splitting. With the newly developed CO 2 reduction nanoparticle (NP) catalysts, direct interfacing of these nanocatalysts with NW light absorbers for photoelectrochemical reduction of CO 2 becomes feasible. Here, we demonstrate a directed assembly of NP catalysts on vertical NW substrates for CO 2 -to-CO conversion under illumination. Guided by the one-dimensional geometry, well-dispersed assembly of Au 3 Cu NPs on the surface of Si NW arrays was achieved with facile coverage tunability. Such Au 3 Cu NP decorated Si NW arrays can readily serve as effective CO 2 reduction photoelectrodes, exhibiting high CO 2 -to-CO selectivity close to 80% at -0.20 V vs RHE with suppressed hydrogen evolution. A reduction of 120 mV overpotential compared to the planar (PL) counterpart was observed resulting from the optimized spatial arrangement of NP catalysts on the high surface area NW arrays. In addition, this system showed consistent photoelectrochemical CO 2 reduction capability up to 18 h. Furthermore, this simple photoelectrode assembly process will lead to further progress in artificial photosynthesis, by allowing the combination of developments in each subfield to create an efficient light-driven system generating carbon-based fuels.

Direct Measurements of Magnetic Polarons in Cd 1– x Mn x Se Nanocrystals from Resonant Photoluminescence

In semiconductors, quantum confinement can greatly enhance the interaction between band carriers (electrons and holes) and dopant atoms. One manifestation of this enhancement is the increased stability of exciton magnetic polarons in magnetically doped nanostructures. In the limit of very strong 0D confinement that is realized in colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals, a single exciton can exert an effective exchange field B ex on the embedded magnetic dopants that exceeds several tesla. Here we use the very sensitive method of resonant photoluminescence (PL) to directly measure the presence and properties of exciton magnetic polarons in colloidal Cd 1–x Mn x Se nanocrystals. Despite small Mn 2+ concentrations (x = 0.4–1.6%), large polaron binding energies up to ~26 meV are observed at low temperatures via the substantial Stokes shift between the pump laser and the resonant PL maximum, indicating nearly complete alignment of all Mn 2+ spins by B ex ex ≈ 10 T in these nanocrystals, in good agreement with theoretical estimates. Further, the emission line widths provide direct insight into the statistical fluctuations of the Mn 2+ spins. In conclusion, these resonant PL studies provide detailed insight into collective magnetic phenomena, especially in lightly doped nanocrystals where conventional techniques such as nonresonant PL or time-resolved PL provide ambiguous results.

Injectable Anisotropic Nanocomposite Hydrogels Direct in Situ Growth and Alignment of Myotubes

Here, while injectable in situ cross-linking hydrogels have attracted increasing attention as minimally invasive tissue scaffolds and controlled delivery systems, their inherently disorganized and isotropic network structure limits their utility in engineering oriented biological tissues. Traditional methods to prepare anisotropic hydrogels are not easily translatable to injectable systems given the need for external equipment to direct anisotropic gel fabrication and/or the required use of temperatures or solvents incompatible with biological systems. Herein, we report a new class of injectable nanocomposite hydrogels based on hydrazone cross-linked poly(oligoethylene glycol methacrylate) and magnetically aligned cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) capable of encapsulating skeletal muscle myoblasts and promoting their differentiation into highly oriented myotubes in situ. CNC alignment occurs on the same time scale as network gelation and remains fixed after the removal of the magnetic field, enabling concurrent CNC orientation and hydrogel injection. The aligned hydrogels show mechanical and swelling profiles that can be rationally modulated by the degree of CNC alignment and can direct myotube alignment both in two- and three-dimensions following coinjection of the myoblasts with the gel precursor components. As such, these hydrogels represent a critical advancement in anisotropic biomimetic scaffolds that can be generated noninvasively in vivo following simple injection.

Direct Observation of Large Flexoelectric Bending at the Nanoscale in Lanthanide Scandates

There is a growing interest in the flexoelectric effect, since at the nanoscale it is predicted to be very large. However, there have been no direct observations of flexoelectric bending consistent with current theoretical work that implies strains comparable to or exceeding the yield strains of typical materials. In this work, we show a direct observation of extraordinarily large, two-dimensional reversible bending at the nanoscale in dysprosium scandate due to the converse flexoelectric effect, with similar results for terbium and gadolinium scandate. Within a transmission electron microscope, thin features bend up to 90° with radii of curvature of about 1 μm, corresponding to very large nominal strains. Analysis including independent experimental determination of the flexoelectric coefficient is semiquantitatively consistent with interpreting the results as due to flexoelectricity. These results experimentally demonstrate large flexoelectric bending at the nanoscale.

Direct Laser Writing Crystal Polymorphs of Organic Semiconductors for Phase Change Electronics

The many diverse polymorphic behaviors observed in organic electronic materials offer opportunities to modulate electronic properties through reversibly switching crystal structures. Here, we access the prolific polymorphism observed in two-dimensional quinoidal terthiophene via laser writing to locally heat and direct the phase transitions. We access a metastable polymorph IV through rapid cooling and observe distinct symmetry as well as packing through grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD). Using our open-source PolyChemPrint patterning platform, we direct laser heating to initiate the IV-I transition, switching the conductance by >2 orders of magnitude. Here, this is confirmed via a combination of GIXD and Raman spectroscopy. Finally, we demonstrate switching of transistor devices as well as discrete tuning of conductance via laser writing.

Direct-Write 3D Nanoprinting of Plasmonic Structures

During the past decade, significant progress has been made in the field of resonant optics ranging from fundamental aspects to concrete applications. And while several techniques have been introduced for the fabrication of highly defined metallic nanostructures, the synthesis of complex, free-standing three-dimensional (3D) structures is still an intriguing, but so far intractable, challenge. Here, we demonstrate a 3D direct-write synthesis approach that addresses this challenge. Specifically, we succeeded in the direct-write fabrication of 3D nanoarchitectures via electron-stimulated reactions, which are applicable on virtually any material and surface morphology. Furthermore, by that, complex 3D nanostructures composed of highly compact, pure gold can be fabricated, which reveal strong plasmonic activity and pave the way for a new generation of 3D nanoplasmonic architectures that can be printed on-demand.

Direct Electrical Detection of Iodine Gas by a Novel Metal–Organic-Framework-Based Sensor

High-fidelity detection of iodine species is of utmost importance to the safety of the population in cases of nuclear accidents or advanced nuclear fuel reprocessing. In this paper, we describe the success at using impedance spectroscopy to directly detect the real-time adsorption of I 2 by a metal–organic framework zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8-based sensor. Methanolic suspensions of ZIF-8 were dropcast onto platinum interdigitated electrodes, dried, and exposed to gaseous I 2 at 25, 40, or 70 °C. Using an unoptimized sensor geometry, I 2 was readily detected at 25 °C in air within 720 s of exposure. The specific response is attributed to the chemical selectivity of the ZIF-8 toward I 2 . Furthermore, equivalent circuit modeling of the impedance data indicates a >10 5 × decrease in ZIF-8 resistance when 116 wt % I 2 is adsorbed by ZIF-8 at 70 °C in air. This irreversible decrease in resistance is accompanied by an irreversible loss in the long-range crystallinity, as evidenced by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. Air, argon, methanol, and water were found to produce minimal changes in ZIF-8 impedance. Finally, this report demonstrates how selective I 2 adsorption by ZIF-8 can be leveraged to create a highly selective sensor using >10 5 × changes in impedance response to enable the direct electrical detection of environmentally relevant gaseous toxins.

Directly Linking Low-Angle Grain Boundary Misorientation to Device Functionality for GaAs Grown on Flexible Metal Substrates

A new growth method to make highly oriented GaAs thin films on flexible metal substrates has been developed, enabling roll-to-roll manufacturing of flexible semiconductor devices. The grains are oriented in the <001> direction with <1 degree misorientations between them, and they have a comparable mobility to single-crystalline GaAs at high doping concentrations. At the moment, the role of low-angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) on device performance is unknown. A series of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and cathodoluminesence (CL) studies reveal that increased doping concentrations decrease the grain size and increase the LAGB misorientation. Cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) reveals the complex dislocation structures within LAGBs. Most importantly, a correlative EBSD/electron beam-induced current (EBIC) experiment reveals that LAGBs are carrier recombination centers and that the magnitude of recombination is dependent on the degree of misorientation. The presented results directly link increased LAGB misorientation to degraded device performance, and therefore, strategies to reduce LAGB misorientations and densities would improve highly oriented semiconductor devices.

Fabrication of α-Fe 2 O 3 Nanoparticles/g-C 3 N 4 Direct Z-Scheme Heterojunction of Durable Photocatalytic Activity

The fabrication of a nanohybrid photocatalyst that combines α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) is reported. The ensuing direct Z-scheme heterojunction greatly boosts the photocatalytic activity of the α-Fe 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 nanohybrids. This results in organic dye degradation rates more than two times higher than its individual components, promoted by the efficient charge separation and transfer of the Z-scheme heterojunction mechanism of the nanohybrid photocatalyst. In addition, recyclability tests show an outstanding stability of the nanohybrids spanning five consecutive dye degradation experiments, during which the degradation rate is slightly improved. The origin of the improved photocatalytic performance of the nanohybrid lies in the intimate interaction between α-Fe 2 O 3 and g-C 3 N 4 afforded by the two-step fabrication process, which enables the direct and controlled growth of α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles on g-C 3 N 4 . A first ultrasound impregnation step promotes the effective anchoring of stable Fe species via Fe–N and C–N/C–O bonding, while a second microwave phase conversion step induces the subsequent growth of α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles on the g-C 3 N 4 sheets. Careful control of the FeCl 3 precursor concentration up to a threshold value of 0.25 M during impregnation enables complete control over their size and phase. This approach clearly highlights the benefits of microwave reactor systems in the fabrication of hematite-based Z-scheme photocatalytic, overcoming the limitations of conventional thermal treatment technology.

Directed Self-Assembly of the Organic Semiconductor C8-BTBT-C8 in Anodic Aluminum Oxide Nanopores

Controlling the self-assembly of organic semiconductors at the nanoscale is critical for advancing high-performance electronic and photonic devices, yet it remains challenging due to their intrinsic anisotropic crystallization and sensitivity to processing conditions. Here, in this study, we demonstrate that cylindrical nanoconfinement within anodic aluminum oxide membranes provides a versatile platform to precisely tune the molecular orientation and phase behavior of the prototypical organic semiconductor 2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (C8-BTBT-C8). Combining temperature-dependent high-resolution synchrotron X-ray scattering with optical birefringence measurements, we uncover that confinement geometries (pore diameters 25–180 nm) and surface chemistry govern the emergence of distinct smectic A textures, featuring molecular layers either parallel or perpendicular to the pore axis. The competition between axial and radial smectic layering is modulated by pore size, surface hydrophilicity, and thermal history, enabling reversible control over domain orientations and transitions between liquid crystalline and crystalline states. Notably, nanoconfinement stabilizes the smectic phase over an expanded temperature range compared to bulk, while inducing complex multidomain configurations owing to geometric constraints and anchoring conditions. Our results elucidate fundamental mechanisms by which anisotropic nanoscale confinement directs the self-organization of highly conjugated organic molecules, with implications for optimizing directional charge transport and anisotropic optical responses in organic–inorganic hybrid nanoarchitectures. This study establishes nanoconfinement as a powerful strategy to engineer morphology and functional properties in organic semiconducting materials with nanoscale precision.

Plasmon-Assisted Direct Interfacial Charge Transfer Enables Molecular Photodissociation on Metal Surfaces

Plasmonic photocatalysis is promising for driving reactions out of equilibrium, leading to enhanced rates and selectivity, but the energy and charge transfer mechanism at the interface remains to be explored. Here, we revisit visible-light plasmon-assisted photodissociation of dimethyl disulfide molecules (S–S bond cleavage) over single-crystalline silver and copper surfaces, using density functional theory calculations and the delta self-consistent field method. We investigate different excitation mechanisms and show that the direct intramolecular excitations, as suggested earlier to explain the experimental findings, cannot address the observed catalytic bond activation. Instead, the calculated excitations mediated by the metal Fermi level agree well with the threshold energy and maximum-yield energy in experiments and suggest that the reaction follows a direct interfacial charge transfer mechanism. Furthermore, we show that the excitation energy and the charge transfer can be modulated by introducing excess charges in the systems. Here, this study thus provides a fundamental understanding of interfacial charge transfer for driving plasmonic photocatalysis.

Ionic Conductivity Enhancement of Polymer Electrolytes by Directed Crystallization

Here, we report that hot stretching of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) can lead to a preferred orientation of PEO crystalline lamellae, thereby reducing the tortuosity of the ion-conduction pathway along the thickness direction of the SPE film, causing improved ionic conductivity. The hot stretching method is implemented by stretching SPE films above the melting point of PEO in an inert environment followed by crystallization at room temperature while maintaining the applied strain. The effect of hot stretching on the crystalline orientation, crystallinity, morphology, and ion transport in PEO with two types of salts, lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) and lithium triflate (LiCF3SO3), is investigated in detail. Wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) show that the orientation of PEO crystalline lamellae induces the formation of a short ion-conduction pathway along the through-plane direction of the SPE films, leading to 1.4- to 3.5-fold enhancement in the through-plane ionic conductivity.
