Neutrino Oscillations at the NOvA Experiment

NOvA is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment located at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, IL, USA. Its main goal is to extract neutrino oscillation parameters by examining the disappearance of $\nu_\mu \ (\bar{\nu}_\mu)$ and the appearance of $\nu_e \ (\bar{\nu}_e)$ at its far detector. The experiment uses the NuMI beamline at Fermilab, which delivers a high-purity neutrino and antineutrino beam. NOvA consists of two functionally similar, high-resolution liquid scintillator tracking calorimeters, both placed 14.6 milliradians off the beam axis. The near detector, positioned 100 m underground and 1 km from the beam's origin, captures unoscillated $\nu_\mu (\bar{\nu}_\mu)$ and instrinsic beam $\nu_e \ (\bar{\nu}_e)$ events. The far detector, located 810 km away from the beam source in Ash River, Minnesota, measures both unoscillated $\nu_\mu \ (\bar{\nu}_\mu)$ and those that have oscillated into $\nu_\mu \ (\bar{\nu}_\mu) \to \nu_e \ (\bar{\nu}_e)$. This poster will cover the latest results on three-flavor neutrino oscillation parameters, derived from an exposure of neutrino beam of $26.60 \times 10^{20}$ POT and anti-neutrino beam exposure of $12.50\times 10^{20}$ POT including an additional low energy $\nu_e$ sample.

DUNE experiment physics

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will feature a 40-kton liquid argon TPC detector situated a mile below the surface at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. A new broadband high-intensity neutrino source and Near Detector complex will be located at Fermilab, 1300 kilometers away. This arrangement will provide unprecedented sensitivity in the search for neutrino CP violation, determination of the neutrino mass ordering, and precision measurements of neutrino mixing parameters. The underground Far Detector also allows for low background, low threshold observations of supernova neutrinos, with a unique sensitivity to the electron neutrino flux. Further, DUNE will conduct a wide range of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, including baryon number violation, rare scattering processes, and non-standard flavor transitions. In this poster, we review DUNE's extensive physics program and show updated sensitivities.

Low-energy Electron-track Imaging for a Liquid Argon Time-projection-chamber Telescope Concept Using Probabilistic Deep Learning

The GammaTPC is an MeV-scale single-phase liquid argon time-projection-chamber gamma-ray telescope concept with a novel dual-scale pixel-based charge-readout system. It promises to enable a significant improvement in sensitivity to MeV-scale gamma rays over previous telescopes. The novel pixel-based charge readout allows for imaging of the tracks of electrons scattered by Compton interactions of incident gamma rays. The two primary contributors to the accuracy of a Compton telescope in reconstructing an incident gamma-ray’s original direction are its energy and position resolution. In this work, we focus on using deep learning to optimize the reconstruction of the initial position and direction of electrons scattered in Compton interactions, including using probabilistic models to estimate predictive uncertainty. We show that the deep-learning models are able to predict locations of Compton scatters of MeV-scale gamma rays from simulated 500 μm pixel-based data to better than 1 mm rms error and are sensitive to the initial direction of the scattered electron. We compare and contrast different deep-learning uncertainty estimation algorithms for reconstruction applications. Additionally, we show that event-by-event estimates of the uncertainty of the locations of the Compton scatters can be used to select those events that were reconstructed most accurately, leading to improvement in locating the origin of gamma-ray sources on the sky.

VERITAS Observations Contemporaneous with the LHAASO Detection of NGC 4278

Significant gamma-ray emission between 1 TeV and 20 TeV from a point source, 1LHAASO J1219+2915, consistent with the location of the LINER/LLAGN galaxy NGC 4278 was recently reported by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) collaboration. These data were later split into active and quasi-quiet states, with most of the LHAASO significance coming from the active state (MJD 59449-59589). Subsequent analysis of Fermi-LAT and Swift-XRT observations have been used to explore the double-peaked broadband emission. Models of the spectral energy distribution (SED) are currently unconstrained due to the lack of contemporaneous multiwavelength data at either peak. Here, we report serendipitous observations of NGC 4278 with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS), made possible by the contemporaneous observations of the nearby blazars 1ES 1218+304, 1ES 1215+303, and W Comae, each of which are located within 2° of NGC 4278. VERITAS did not detect any gamma-ray emission, and a flux upper limit was calculated. The flux upper limits constrain the photon spectrum of the quasi-quiet period, and together with Fermi-LAT, indicate a peak in the SED between 100 GeV and 2 TeV. We present an interpretation of the broadband SED that is based on acceleration of protons in the corona of the active galactic nuclei, followed by p–γ interactions and optically thin γ-ray emission. Within this framework, the implied neutrino signal is slightly below the current sensitivity of IceCube.

The relationship between phase stability and frequency stability and a method of converting between them

A method is presented for obtaining the value of the phase stability from time domain frequency stability measurements. Definition of frequency and phase stability are presented. The various types of noise sources in an oscillator and how their location in the oscillator circuitry determines the resultant phase and frequency noise spectrum are described. With this knowledge, the type of noise spectrum from time domain frequency stability measurements is determined. Using certain conversions, the total phase noise spectrum is obtained, which is integrated to obtain the phase stability. Examples of the conversion process are also presented.

Design, fabrication and calibration of alpha particle densitometers for measuring planetary atmospheric density

An alpha particle densitometer was developed for possible application to measurement of the atmospheric density-altitude profile on Martian entry. The device uses an Am-241 radioactive-foil source, which emits a distributed energy spectrum, located about 25 to 75 cm from a semiconductor detector. System response - defined as the number of alphas per second reaching the detector with energy above a fixed threshold - is given for Ar and CO2. The altitude profile of density measurement accuracy is given for a pure CO2 atmosphere with 5 mb surface pressure. The entire unit, including dc-dc converters, requires less than 350 milliwatts of power from +28 volts, weighs about 0.85 lb and occupies less than 15 cubic inches volume.

A1540-53, an eclipsing X-ray binary pulsator

An eclipsing X-ray binary pulsator consistent with the location of A1540-53 was observed. The source pulse period was 528.93 plus or minus 0.10 seconds. The binary nature is confirmed by a Doppler curve for the pulsation period. The eclipse angle of 30.5 deg plus or minus 3 deg and the 4 h transition to and from eclipse suggest an early type, giant or supergiant, primary star.

Energy, frequency, and distance of moonquakes at the Apollo 17 site

'Thermal' moonquakes have been detected at the Apollo 17 site. A typical event releases about 1 to 10 million ergs of energy. The annual seismic energy release for the events observed in the Taurus-Littrow Valley is estimated at 100 billion ergs. Such small events would not cause impossibly rapid erosion on either the North Massif or within the craters of the Central Cluster. Seismic events become increasingly frequent after sunrise and reach a maximum at sunset. The largest events, however, occur most commonly near lunar noon. Rise times of the seismic signals, after being calibrated by the well-located Lunar Seismic Profiling Experiment (LSPE) seismic sources, were used to estimate distances to the seismic events. Most seismic events (about 90%) appear to occur within 2.5 km of the seismometer array.

Focal plane transport assembly for the HEAO-B X-ray telescope

The High Energy Astronomy Observatory - Mission B (HEAO-B), an earth orbiting X-ray telescope facility capable of locating and imaging celestial X-ray sources within one second of arc in the celestial sphere, is considered. The Focal Plane Transport Assembly (FPTA) is one of the basic structural elements of the three thousand pound HEAO-B experiment payload. The FPTA is a multifunctional assembly which supports seven imaging X-ray detectors circumferentially about a central shaft and accurately positions any particular one into the focus of a high resolution mirror assembly. A drive system, position sensor, rotary coupler, and detent alignment system, all an integral part of the rotatable portion which in turn is supported by main bearings to the stationary focal plane housing are described.

Design requirements for SRB production control system. Volume 2: System requirements and conceptual description

In the development of the business system for the SRB automated production control system, special attention had to be paid to the unique environment posed by the space shuttle. The issues posed by this environment, and the means by which they were addressed, are reviewed. The change in management philosphy which will be required as NASA switches from one-of-a-kind launches to multiple launches is discussed. The implications of the assembly process on the business system are described. These issues include multiple missions, multiple locations and facilities, maintenance and refurbishment, multiple sources, and multiple contractors. The implications of these aspects on the automated production control system are reviewed including an assessment of the six major subsystems, as well as four other subsystem. Some general system requirements which flow through the entire business system are described.

Evaluation of lightning accommodation systems for wind-driven turbine rotors

Wind-driven turbine generators are being evaluated as an alternative source of electric energy. Areas of favorable location for the wind-driven turbines (high wind density) coincide with areas of high incidence of thunderstorm activity. These locations, coupled with the 30-m or larger diameter rotor blades, make the wind-driven turbine blades probable terminations for lightning strikes. Several candidate systems of lightning accommodation for composite-structural-material blades were designed and their effectiveness evaluated by submitting the systems to simulated lightning strikes. The test data were analyzed and system design were reviewed on the basis of the analysis.

Intrinsic polarization of SS 433 - An electron scattering model

A model for the generation of the observed intrinsic linear polarization in the optical radiation from SS 433 due to scattering from free electrons in highly ionized material in a jet or inclined disk is examined and compared with observational data. Expressions for the Stokes parameters of the linear polarization as a function of phase are obtained for a simple jet model in which continuum light from a point source is singly scattered by free electrons located along the jets resulting in strikingly different relations between Q and U at different values of model parameters. Comparison of 30 broadband linear polarization measurements with the model indicates a mean value of rotation axis inclination to the line of sight of 63 deg, which is not inconsistent with X-ray and radio data. The measurements are also compatible with models invoking highly inclined disks or rings with emission arising in regions on opposite sides of a diameter.

Ultraviolet interstellar absorption toward HD 5980 in the Small Magellanic Cloud

Individual high-dispersion International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectra of extragalactic stars are noisy because of the long exposure times required and the inherent limitations of the IUE detectors. A program has, therefore, been undertaken to obtain multiple ultraviolet spectra of the brightest Magellanic Cloud stars in order to produce composite spectra with higher signal-to-noise ratios than in individual spectra. The present investigation is concerned with results for HD 5980. The target star, HD 5980, is one of the brightest extragalactic far-ultraviolet sources in the sky. HD 5980 is located in the northeast quadrant of NGC 346, the largest H II region and OB star cluster in the SMC. The analysis of the interstellar line spectrum of HD 5980 provides a number of conclusions about the complex absorption characteristics of the interstellar gas toward the SMC.

Secondary gamma-ray production in a coded aperture mask

The application of the coded aperture mask to high energy gamma-ray astronomy will provide the capability of locating a cosmic gamma-ray point source with a precision of a few arc-minutes above 20 MeV. Recent tests using a mask in conjunction with drift chamber detectors have shown that the expected point spread function is achieved over an acceptance cone of 25 deg. A telescope employing this technique differs from a conventional telescope only in that the presence of the mask modifies the radiation field in the vicinity of the detection plane. In addition to reducing the primary photon flux incident on the detector by absorption in the mask elements, the mask will also be a secondary radiator of gamma-rays. The various background components in a CAMTRAC (Coded Aperture Mask Track Chamber) telescope are considered. Monte-Carlo calculations are compared with recent measurements obtained using a prototype instrument in a tagged photon beam line.

Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) represents an approach for expanding the communication capacity and for implementing special data techniques in a fiber optics system. This technology is implemented by adding optical sources of different wavelengths at optical transmitting locations. The present paper is concerned with some of the current efforts in WDM. WDM applications are related to long haul communications, local area data networks, spacecraft and aircraft data systems, fault tolerant computer networks, special sensor devices, high speed data processors, closed circuit and cable television, and submarine cable systems. Attention is given to the current state of wavelength division multiplexing applications, the availability and status of WDM components semiconductor lasers/transmitters, availability and status of fiber optic detectors/receivers, optical fibers/cables/connectors/taps/star couplers, wavelength multiplexers/demultiplexers, and future WDM for local area networks.

On the stability of a class of isothermal, magnetostatic atmospheres

The stability of a class of isothermal magnetostatic atmospheres with one ignorable coordinate corresponding to a uniform gravitational field in a plane geometry is explored. Special attention is given to the stability of nonpotential equilibria that have the same magnetic field geometry as the potential equilibrium of the solution family. It is found that equilibria in which the source currents for the potential field are buried at large distances below the photospheric base are stable. Also considered is the stability of configurations in which the source currents for the potential field are located at a finite depth below the base.
