Rapid discovery of high hardness multi-principal-element alloys using a generative adversarial network model

Multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) continue to gain research prominence due to their promising high-temperature microstructural and mechanical properties. Recently, machine learning (ML) and materials informatics have been used extensively for screening MPEAs, however, most of these efforts were focused on constructing classification and regression models for predicting phase stability and mechanical properties of known compositions. These approaches may accelerate the screening process but optimizing new compositions with desirable properties within a practical time frame from an infinitely large design space of MPEA systems remains a grand challenge. To tackle this composition optimization challenge, a generative adversarial network coupled with a neural-network ML model was utilized to design MPEAs by filtering compositions that have high hardness. Even in a high-dimensional space with 18 elements as descriptors, the ML model was able to generate optimized compositions from which one composition was found to have 10% higher hardness (941 HV) than the maximum in the training data (857 HV). Density-functional theory was used to provide thermodynamic and electronic insights to higher hardness of the new MPEA found. The present work can optimize compositions from a wide design space of 18 elements (including W, Ta and Nb) that presents an opportunity to synthesize new compositions for applications ranging from corrosion-resistant alloys to nuclear materials. Here the findings suggest that generative ML can greatly accelerate materials discovery by identifying novel compositions, which can serve as a data-informed tool to guide experiments.

Driving rapid atomic order in MnAl via low-magnitude magnetic field annealing

Application of a mild (60 mT), uniform magnetic field during short-term thermal treatment of kinetically retained, atomically disordered (paramagnetic) ε-MnAl was found to deliver a significant ~50 % increase in the formation of L1 0 atomically ordered (ferromagnetic) τ-MnAl product phase, compared to that produced by conventional (i.e., zero-field) annealing under identical thermal conditions. The magnetic field, applied in a passive closed-circuit configuration during annealing, induced significant changes in the structural, magnetic, and phase evolution of the material. Computational results based on electronic structure calculations demonstrate that the effective magnetic susceptibility of τ-MnAl is sensitive to the orientation, rather than the magnitude, of an applied magnetic field in the vicinity of the Curie temperature. The uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the L1 0 structure is proposed to act as a filter for selective propagation of the population of τ-MnAl variants that are favorably aligned with the applied field. In this manner, crystallographic “gridlock” is alleviated that would otherwise arise from the coexistence of multiple, energetically equivalent τ-phase variants within the parent ε-phase matrix. These results confirm that static, low-magnitude magnetic field annealing is able to accelerate L1 0 atomic ordering in the MnAl system and likely can exert similar influences in relevant magnetic systems, facilitating efficient tailoring of structure-sensitive magnetic properties for the manufacture of magnetic materials.

Rapid determination of supercritical CO 2 and brine relative permeability using an unsteady-state flow method

In this study, relative permeability of supercritical CO 2 (scCO 2 ) and brine was determined in reactive and non-reactive rock cores using a combination of unsteady-state methodology and computed tomography. Experiments were conducted using a medical grade CT scanner to determine saturation using a custom Python script. The saturation and differential pressure across the core were then used to derive four empirical constants to calculate relative permeability. This methodology increases temporal efficiency while reducing experimental complexity. Additionally, we show that the method can be used to determine scCO 2 relative permeability in a wide range of lithologies and flow rates, and with the ability to account for matrix dissolution during scCO 2 flooding.

Compact automated apparatus for rapid astatine recovery from nitric acid media: Design, application, and impurity characterization

We report automation of irradiated bismuth target dissolution and astatine recovery from nitric acid media has been achieved at Texas A&M University. This process can be controlled remotely; it does not require any chemical treatment or evaporation of dissolution solution prior to the separation of above-mentioned elements on an extraction chromatography column, making the final product ready within 20 min. The accompanying radio-impurities have been identified and successfully separated from astatine, leading to greater than 99% radiopurity of the desired fractions. The system consists of only one pump and a set of LabVIEW controlled valves, and allows the connection of up to 10 different columns, providing the opportunity to prepare a variety of air dry columns, which can be different column geometries, containing astatine ready for further chemistry or shipment to desired facilities.
