thornado+FLASH-X: A Hybrid Discontinuous Galerkin–Implicit-explicit and Finite-volume Framework for Neutrino-radiation Hydrodynamics in Core-collapse Supernovae

We present neutrino-transport algorithms implemented in the toolkit for high-order neutrino-radiation hydrodynamics (thornado) and their coupling to self-gravitating hydrodynamics within the adaptive mesh refinement–based multiphysics simulation framework FLASH-X. thornado, developed primarily for simulations of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), employs a spectral, six-species two-moment formulation with algebraic closure and special-relativistic observer corrections accurate to $\mathcal{O}(v/c)$, and uses discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for phase-space discretization combined with implicit-explicit time stepping. A key development is a nonlinear neutrino–matter coupling algorithm based on nested fixed-point iteration with Anderson acceleration, enabling fully implicit treatment of collisional processes, including energy-coupling interactions such as neutrino–electron scattering and pair production. Coupling to finite-volume (FV) hydrodynamics is achieved through a hybrid DG-FV representation of the fluid variables and operator-split evolution within FLASH-X. The implementation is verified using basic transport tests with idealized opacities and relaxation and deleptonization problems with tabulated microphysics. Spherically symmetric CCSN simulations demonstrate accuracy and robustness of the coupled scheme, including close agreement with the CCSN simulation code Chimera. An axisymmetric CCSN simulation further demonstrates the viability of DG-based neutrino transport for multidimensional supernova modeling within FLASH-X. thornado’s neutrino-transport solver is GPU-enabled using OpenMP offloading or OpenACC, and all CCSN applications included in this work use the GPU implementation. Together, these results establish a foundation for future enhancements in physics fidelity, numerical algorithms, and computational performance, for increasingly realistic large-scale CCSN simulations.

The diurnal susceptibility of subtropical clouds to aerosols

The diurnal susceptibility of clouds and their radiative properties to aerosols is examined during their Lagrangian transition from subtropical stratocumulus to shallow cumulus regimes. Using large-eddy simulations, we analyze the six-day evolution of an air mass along a 3800 km observed trajectory from the coast of Peru toward the equator. Pristine and polluted scenarios are simulated with forcing imposed from weather reanalysis. The polluted scenario exhibits stronger diurnal variations in cloud water, cloud fraction, and albedo, with enhanced nighttime entrainment and suppressed precipitation. The overall response of cloud properties and outgoing shortwave radiation to droplet number concentration follows a distinct diurnal pattern: strong positive cloud adjustments dominate at night and in the morning, while weak negative adjustments prevail in the afternoon. This cycle is driven by the competition between precipitation suppression, which enhances cloud water and coverage, and entrainment drying, which depletes them. In polluted conditions, enhanced entrainment leads to a deeper and more decoupled boundary layer that cannot be sustained by surface fluxes in the afternoon, resulting in negative cloud adjustments. The enhanced entrainment rate under polluted conditions is caused by the reduced sedimentation of cloud and precipitation water from the entrainment zone. While the Twomey effect dominates the diurnal average albedo response, the diurnal variation in the competing cloud adjustments lead to a near-neutral net susceptibility in the afternoon, highlighting the critical role of diurnally varying processes in aerosol-cloud interactions.

CLM5 CAMELS Basins Ensemble

Land surface models such as Community Land Model Version 5 (CLM5) are essential tools for simulating the behaviors of the terrestrial system. Despite the extensive application of CLM5, limited attention has been paid to the underlying uncertainties associated with its hydrologic parameters and the implications that these uncertainties have on water resources applications. To address this long-standing issue, we conduct a comprehensive hydrologic parameter uncertainty characterization (UC) of CLM5 over the hydroclimatic gradients of the Conterminous United States using five meteorological datasets. Key datasets produced from the UC experiment include a benchmark dataset of CLM5 default hydrological performance, parameter sensitivity identified for 28 hydrological metrics, and large ensemble outputs for hydrological predictions. The presented datasets can assist CLM5 calibration and to support broad applications such as evaluating vulnerabilities to droughts and floods. The dataset can be used to identify under what hydroclimate conditions parametric uncertainties demonstrate substantial effects on hydrological predictions and clarify where further investigations are needed to understand how land runoff uncertainties interact with other Earth system processes. Please refer to the included README.pdf for a description of the included files. Note that raw CLM5 model outputs for each forcing dataset are hosted on a Globus endpoint: https://app.globus.org/file-manager?destination_id=d22ef858-27b0-11ed-a910-fd3165076336.

Deuterium and tritium from solar flares at approximately 10 MeV per nucleon

It is indicated that the observations with the high-resolution solid-state charged-particle telescopes of the IMP-5 and IMP-6 earth satellites have resolved all the hydrogen and helium isotopes of solar-flare origin in groups of solar flares during the period from September, 1969, through November, 1972. The values obtained for the average isotope ratios are given and are compared with previous values. It is concluded that the observed high yields of H(2), H(3) and He(3) can be explained only by high-energy nuclear interactions and that an acceleration process must have taken place in the chromosphere at that time.

Conditioning of MVM '73 radio-tracking data

An extensive effort was undertaken to edit Mariner 10 radiometric tracking data. Interactive computer graphics were used for the first time by an interplanetary mission to detect blunder points and spurious signatures in the data. Interactive graphics improved the former process time by a factor of 10 to 20, while increasing reliability. S/X dual Doppler data was used for the first time to calibrate charged particles in the tracking medium. Application of the charged particle calibrations decreased the orbit determination error for a short data arc following the 16 March 1974 maneuver by about 80%. A new model was developed to calibrate the earth's troposphere with seasonal adjustments. The new model has a 2% accuracy and is 5 times better than the old model.

Use of remote sensing technology for inventorying and planning utilization of land resources in South Dakota

A comprehensive land use planning process model is being developed in Meade County, South Dakota, using remote sensing technology. The proper role of remote sensing in the land use planning process is being determined by interaction of remote sensing specialists with local land use planners. The data that were collected by remote sensing techniques are as follows: (1) level I land use data interpreted at a scale of 1:250,000 from false color enlargement prints of ERTS-1 color composite transparencies; (2) detailed land use data interpreted at a scale of 1:24,000 from enlargement color prints of high altitude RB-57 photography; and (3) general soils map interpreted at a scale of 1:250,000 from false color enlargement prints of ERTS-1 color composite transparencies. In addition to use of imagery as an interpretation aid, the utility of using photographs as base maps was demonstrated.

Resolution of electron emission mechanisms in an argon arc with a hot tungsten cathode

The regenerative nature of the interaction between the electron emission processes at the cathode surface and the ion-, excited-atom-, and photon-production processes in the plasma was examined. Semiquantitative estimates of the thickness of the species production layer, the current partition, and the time constants were made. These results were used to interpret experimental measurements of the current decay of an argon arc at 46.7 kPa, 3.2-7.9 A, and 28-18 V, with a self-sustained hot tungsten cathode. After the discharge is suddenly connected to a voltage clamp, the disparity of decay rates for different emission processes permits the separation of thermionic emission from the faster-decaying components. The observed thermionic current constitutes about 30% of the total emission. The high nonthermionic portions of the current could not be explained in terms of the present understanding of the emission processes.

Artificial stereo presentation of meteorological data fields

The innate capability to perceive three-dimensional stereo imagery has been exploited to present multidimensional meteorological data fields. Variations on an artificial stereo technique first discussed by Pichel et al. (1973) are used to display single and multispectral images in a vivid and easily assimilated manner. Examples of visible/infrared artificial stereo are given for Hurricane Allen and for severe thunderstorms on 10 April 1979. Three-dimensional output from a mesoscale model also is presented. The images may be viewed through the glasses inserted in the February 1981 issue of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, with the red lens over the right eye. The images have been produced on the interactive Atmospheric and Oceanographic Information Processing System (AOIPS) at Goddard Space Flight Center. Stereo presentation is an important aid in understanding meteorological phenomena for operational weather forecasting, research case studies, and model simulations.
