All-Dielectric Meta-Optics for High-Efficiency Independent Amplitude and Phase Manipulation

Optical metasurfaces, composed of subwavelength scattering elements, demonstrate remarkable control over the transmitted amplitude, phase, and polarization of light. However, manipulating the amplitude upon transmission, without the use of surface waves, requires loss if a single metasurface is used. Herein, high-efficiency independent manipulation of the amplitude and phase of a beam is described using two lossless phase-only metasurfaces separated by a distance. With this configuration, optical components such as combined beam-forming and splitting devices are experimentally demonstrated, as well as those for forming complex-valued, 3D holograms. The compound meta-optic platform provides a promising approach for achieving high-performance holographic displays and compact optical components, while exhibiting a high overall efficiency.

A Beehive Inspired Hydrogen Photocatalytic Device Integrating a Carbo–Benzene Triptych Material for Efficient Solar Photo–Reduction of Seawater

The dream to produce green, clean and sustainable hydrogen from earth-abundant and free resources such as seawater and sunlight is highly motivating because of the interest for desirable economical and societal applications in energy. However, it remains challenging to develop an efficient and unassisted photocatalytic device to split seawater molecules with just sunlight without any external bias. For the first time, a such novel hierarchical material has been developed, based on thin film technology that integrates TiO 2 semiconductor layers, embedded gold nanoparticles and a photosensitive carbo-benzene layer. The design of the triptych device placing the photocatalyst in be-to-be increases the photoactive surface area by a factor 2. Its stability (>120 successive hours of hydrogen production and >5 days in a day/night representative alternation) and efficiency (STH 0.06%) are measured in NaCl-salted water. Here, the chloride ions act as hole scavengers and induce an increase of pH increasing in turn the sun-driven hydrogen production rate.

An Optimized Fibril Network Morphology Enables High‐Efficiency and Ambient‐Stable Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract Morphological stability is crucially important for the long‐term stability of polymer solar cells (PSCs). Many high‐efficiency PSCs suffer from metastable morphology, resulting in severe device degradation. Here, a series of copolymers is developed by manipulating the content of chlorinated benzodithiophene‐4,8‐dione (T1‐Cl) via a random copolymerization approach. It is found that all the copolymers can self‐assemble into a fibril nanostructure in films. By altering the T1‐Cl content, the polymer crystallinity and fibril width can be effectively controlled. When blended with several nonfullerene acceptors, such as TTPTT‐4F, O‐INIC3, EH‐INIC3, and Y6, the optimized fibril interpenetrating morphology can not only favor charge transport, but also inhibit the unfavorable molecular diffusion and aggregation in active layers, leading to excellent morphological stability. The work demonstrates the importance of optimization of fibril network morphology in realizing high‐efficiency and ambient‐stable PSCs, and also provides new insights into the effect of chemical structure on the fibril network morphology and photovoltaic performance of PSCs.

Correlating Electronic Structure and Device Physics with Mixing Region Morphology in High-Efficiency Organic Solar Cells

The donor/acceptor interaction in non-fullerene organic photovoltaics leads to the mixing domain that dictates the morphology and electronic structure of the blended thin film. Initiative effort is paid to understand how these domain properties affect the device performances on high-efficiency PM6:Y6 blends. Different fullerenes acceptors are used to manipulate the feature of mixing domain. It is seen that a tight packing in the mixing region is critical, which could effectively enhance the hole transfer and lead to the enlarged and narrow electron density of state (DOS). As a result, short-circuit current (J SC ) and fill factor (FF) are improved. The distribution of DOS and energy levels strongly influences open-circuit voltage (V OC ). The raised filling state of electron Fermi level is seen to be key in determining device V OC . Energy disorder is found to be a key factor to energy loss, which is highly correlated with the intermolecular distance in the mixing region. A 17.53% efficiency is obtained for optimized ternary devices, which is the highest value for similar systems. The current results indicate that a delicate optimization of the mixing domain property is an effective route to improve the V OC , J SC , and FF simultaneously, which provides new guidelines for morphology control toward high-performance organic solar cells.

Bioinspired Macrocyclic Molecule Supported Two‐Dimensional Lamellar Membrane with Robust Interlayer Structure for High‐Efficiency Nanofiltration

Abstract 2D lamellar membranes (2DLMs) are used for efficient desalination and nanofiltration. However, weak interactions between adjacent stacked nanosheets result in susceptibility to swelling that limits practical applicability. Inspired by the super adhesion of multi‐point suction cups on octopus tentacles, a 2DLM is constructed from Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene supported by the macrocyclic “multi‐point” molecule cucurbit[5]uril (CB5) and demonstrated for nanofiltration of methyl blue (MB) and enrichment of uranyl carbonate. Experimental results and density functional theory calculations indicate that CB5 rivets to the surface of the nanoflakes through strong stable interactions between its multiple binding sites and surface hydroxyl functional groups on MXene nanosheets. This novel 2DLM exhibits excellent nanofiltration performance (69 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 permeance with 93.6% rejection for MB) and can be recycled at least 30 times without significant degradation. The 2DLM exhibits excellent swelling resistance at high salinity, with a demonstration of selective enrichment of uranyl carbonate from artificial water and natural seawater. The results provide a new strategy for constructing highly stable 2DLMs with interlayer spacing controllable from sub‐nano to nanometer scales, for size‐selective sieving of molecules and ions, high‐efficiency nanofiltration, and other applications.

Thiol‐Functionalized Conjugated Metal–Organic Frameworks for Stable and Efficient Perovskite Photovoltaics

Abstract Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been investigated recently in perovskite photovoltaics owing to their potential to boost optoelectronic performance and device stability. However, the impact of variations in the MOF side chain on perovskite characteristics and the mechanism of MOF/perovskite film formation remains unclear. In this study, three nanoscale thiol‐functionalized UiO‐66‐type Zr‐based MOFs (UiO‐66‐(SH) 2 , UiO‐66‐MSA, and UiO‐66‐DMSA) are systematically employed and examined in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Among these MOFs, UiO‐66‐(SH) 2 , with its rigid organic ligands, exhibited a strong interaction with perovskite materials with more efficient suppression of perovskite vacancy defects. More importantly, A detailed and in‐depth discussion is provided on the formation mechanism of UiO‐66‐(SH) 2 ‐assisted perovskite film upon in situ GIWAXS performed during the annealing process. The incorporation of UiO‐66‐(SH) 2 additives substantially facilitates the conversion of PbI 2 into the perovskite phase, prolongs the duration of stage I, and induces a delayed phase transformation pathway. Consequently, the UiO‐66‐(SH) 2 ‐assisted device demonstrates reduced defect density and superior optoelectronic properties with optimized power conversion efficiency of 24.09% and enhanced long‐term stability under ambient environment and continuous light illumination conditions. This study acts as a helpful design guide for desired MOF/perovskite structures, enabling further advancements in MOF/perovskite optoelectronic devices.

Highly Efficient Room‐Temperature Spin‐Orbit‐Torque Switching in a Van der Waals Heterostructure of Topological Insulator and Ferromagnet

Abstract All‐Van der Waals (vdW)‐material‐based heterostructures with atomically sharp interfaces offer a versatile platform for high‐performing spintronic functionalities at room temperature. One of the key components is vdW topological insulators (TIs), which can produce a strong spin‐orbit‐torque (SOT) through the spin‐momentum locking of their topological surface state (TSS). However, the relatively low conductance of the TSS introduces a current leakage problem through the bulk states of the TI or the adjacent ferromagnetic metal layers, reducing the interfacial charge‐to‐spin conversion efficiency ( q ICS ). Here, a vdW heterostructure is used consisting of atomically‐thin layers of a bulk‐insulating TI Sn‐doped Bi 1.1 Sb 0.9 Te 2 S 1 and a room‐temperature ferromagnet Fe 3 GaTe 2, to enhance the relative current ratio on the TSS up to ≈20%. The resulting q ICS reaches ≈1.65 nm −1 and the critical current density J c ≈0.9 × 10 6 Acm −2 at 300 K, surpassing the performance of TI‐based and heavy‐metal‐based SOT devices. These findings demonstrate that an all‐vdW heterostructure with thickness optimization offers a promising platform for efficient current‐controlled magnetization switching at room temperature.

Significant Efficiency Enhancements in Non‐Y Series Acceptors by the Addition of Outer Side Chains

Abstract Most current highly efficient organic solar cells utilize small molecules like Y6 and its derivatives as electron acceptors in the photoactive layer. In this work, a small molecule acceptor, SC8‐IT4F, is developed through outer side chain engineering on the terminal thiophene of a conjugated 6,12‐dihydro‐dithienoindeno[2,3‐d:2′,3′‐d′]‐s‐indaceno[1,2‐b:5,6‐b′]dithiophene (IDTT) central core. Compared to the reference molecule C8‐IT4F, which lacks outer side chains, SC8‐IT4F displays notable differences in molecule geometry (as shown by simulations), thermal behavior, single‐crystal packing, and film morphology. Blend films of SC8‐IT4F and the polymer donor PM6 exhibit larger carrier mobilities, longer carrier lifetimes, and reduced recombination compared to C8‐IT4F, resulting in improved device performance. Binary photovoltaic devices based on the PM6:SC8‐IT4F films reveal an optimal efficiency over 15%, which is one of the best values for non‐Y type small molecule acceptors (SMAs). The resultant devices also show better thermal and operational stability than the control PM6:L8‐BO devices. SC8‐IT4F and its blend exhibit a higher relative degree of crystallinity and π coherence length, compared to C8‐IT4F samples, beneficial for charge transport and device performance. The results indicate that outer side chain engineering on existing small electron acceptors can be a promising molecular design strategy for further pursuing high‐performance organic solar cells.

Efficient, Thermally Stable, and Mechanically Robust All-Polymer Solar Cells Consisting of the Same Benzodithiophene Unit-Based Polymer Acceptor and Donor with High Molecular Compatibility

All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) are a highly attractive class of photovoltaics for wearable and portable electronics due to their excellent morphological and mechanical stabilities. Recently, new types of polymer acceptors (P A s) consisting of non-fullerene small molecule acceptors (NFSMAs) with strong light absorption have been proposed to enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of all-PSCs. However, polymerization of NFSMAs often reduces entropy of mixing in PSC blends and prevents the formation of intermixed blend domains required for efficient charge generation and morphological stability. One approach to increase compatibility in these systems is to design P A s that contain the same building blocks as their polymer donor (P D ) counterparts. Here, a series of NFSMA-based P A s [P(BDT2BOY5-X), (X = H, F, Cl)] are reported, by copolymerizing NFSMA (Y5-2BO) with benzodithiophene (BDT), a common donating unit in high-performance P D s such as PBDB-T. All-PSC blends composed of PBDB-T PD and P(BDT2BOY5-X) P A show enhanced molecular compatibility, resulting in excellent morphological and electronic properties. Specifically, PBDB-T:P(BDT2BOY5-Cl) all-PSC has a PCE of 11.12%, which is significantly higher than previous PBDB-T:Y5-2BO (7.02%) and PBDB-T:P(NDI2OD-T2) (6.00%) PSCs. Additionally, the increased compatibility of these all-PSCs greatly improves their thermal stability and mechanical robustness. For example, the crack onset strain (COS) and toughness of the PBDB-T:P(BDT2BOY5-Cl) blend are 15.9% and 3.24 MJ m -3 , respectively, in comparison to the PBDB-T:Y5-2BO blends at 2.21% and 0.32 MJ m -3 .

Modification of the Coordination Environment of Active Sites on MoC for High-Efficiency CH 4 Production

Modulating the coordination environment of active sites on catalyst surfaces is crucial to developing effective catalysts and controlling catalysis, but it is highly challenging. Guided by our first-principles calculations, we experimentally accomplish the modification of the coordination environment of active sites on MoC nanoparticle surfaces by anchoring pyridinic N atom rings of holey graphene on Mo atoms. The rings produce electrostatic forces that enable the tuning of the Mo sites' affinity to reaction intermediates, which passivates Mo hollow sites, activates Mo top sites and reduces the over-adsorption of OH on the Mo active sites, as predicted by the calculations. The atomic-level modification is well confirmed by atomic-resolution imaging, high-resolution electron tomography, synchrotron soft X-ray spectroscopy and operando electrochemical infrared spectroscopy. Consequently, the Faradaic efficiency for CO 2 reduction to CH 4 is enhanced from 16% to 89%, a record high efficiency so far, in aqueous electrolyte. Meantime, it also exhibits a negligible activity loss over 50 h.

Twinning Enhances Efficiencies of Metallic Catalysts toward Electrolytic Water Splitting

Twinning is demonstrated to be an effective way of enhancing efficiencies of metallic catalysts toward electrolytic water splitting. Dendritic Cu possessing dense coherent nanotwin (NT) boundaries (NTCu-5nm) is successfully prepared with an organic-assisted electrodeposition at high pulse current densities. NT boundaries significantly improve electrocatalytic efficiencies and stability of NTCu-5nm over nanocrystalline Cu (NCCu), reducing overpotentials at 10 mA cm -2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) from 378 to 281 mV and from 235 to 88 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with a small chronoamperometric decay of 5% after 100 h continuous overall water splitting at an ultrahigh initial current density of 500 mA cm -2 , largely outperforming the large chronoamperometric decay of 27% for only 1 h operation of the NCCu//NCCu couple. The defective twin boundaries enable formation of active Cu III O 2 - at low overpotentials, thus enhancing OER performance. Furthermore, the synergistic geometric and electronic effects induced by the twin boundaries result in shifts in Gibbs free energies of hydrogen adsorption (ΔG H ) toward the apex of a volcano plot of exchange current density versus ΔG H , leading to the remarkable improvement in HER activity.

Simultaneous Improvements in Efficiency and Stability of Organic Solar Cells via a Symmetric‐Asymmetric Dual‐Acceptor Strategy

Abstract Simultaneously achieving improvements in power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability is the main task of the current development stage of organic solar cells (OSCs). This work reports a symmetry–asymmetry dual‐acceptor (SADA) strategy to construct ternary devices, which is found to be feasible for increasing both the PCE and the operational lifetime of OSCs. In this contribution, the symmetric acceptor L8‐BO and the asymmetric acceptor BTP‐S9 are blended in equal proportions with polymer donor PM6 for the consideration of absorption spectrum complementarity and cascade energetic alignment. In addition, the features of crystallinity and miscibility of the dual‐acceptor deliver optimized morphology lead to a high PCE of 18.84%. In addition, the asymmetric acceptor BTP‐S9 with a larger dipole moment shows tighter molecular stacking and longer crystal correlation length, which favor intrinsic molecular photostability, and further consolidate the operational lifetime of OSCs when coordinated with L8‐BO. This work demonstrates the efficacy of the SADA strategy for constructing efficient and stable OSCs.

Solvent-Mediated Formation of Quasi-2D Dion-Jacobson Phases on 3D Perovskites for Inverted Solar Cells Over 23% Efficiency

2D-on-3D (2D/3D) perovskite heterostructures present a promising strategy to realize efficient and stable photovoltaics. However, their applicability in inverted solar cells is limited due to the quantum confinement of the 2D-layer and solvent incompatibilities that disrupt the underlying 3D layer, hampering electron transport at the 2D/3D interface. Herein, solvent-dependent formation dynamics and structural evolution of 2D/3D heterostructures are investigated via in situ X-ray scattering. In this study, it is revealed that solvent interaction with the 3D surface determines the formation sequence and spatial distribution of quasi-2D phases with n = 2–4. Isopropanol (IPA) reconstructs the perovskite into a PbI 2 -rich surface, forming a strata with smaller n first, followed by a thinner substratum of larger n. In contrast, 2,2,2-Trifluoroethanol (TFE) preserves the 3D surface, promoting the formation of uniformly distributed larger n domains first, and smaller n last. Leveraging these insights, Dion–Jacobson perovskites are used with superior charge transport properties and structural robustness to fabricate 2D/3D heterostructures dominated by n ≥ 3 and engineer a favorable energy landscape for electron tunneling. Inverted solar cells based on 3-Aminomethylpyridine and TFE achieve a champion efficiency of 23.60%, with V oc and FF of 1.19 V and 84.5%, respectively, and superior stabilities with t 94 of 960 h under thermal stress.

Pathways Toward Efficient and Durable Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers Enabled By Electro‐Active Porous Transport Layers

Abstract Green hydrogen, produced via water electrolysis using renewable electricity, will play a crucial role in decarbonizing industrial and heavy‐duty transportation sectors. Anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) can overcome many of the performance and cost limitations of incumbent technologies, however, still suffer from durability challenges due to oxidative instability of anion‐exchange ionomers. Herein, the use of an electro‐active porous transport layer as anode (PTL‐electrode) is demonstrated to enable efficient and durable AEMWEs. The stainless‐steel PTL‐electrodes are shown to have superior performance and durability compared to traditional catalyst layers containing ionomer and nanoparticle catalysts. An AEMWE cell operating at 2 A cm −2 for over 600 h exhibited a degradation rate of just 5 µV h −1 . During operation, the surface composition of the stainless steel transforms into a mixture of iron and nickel oxyhydroxides, contributing to enhanced oxygen‐evolution reaction activity. The combination of experimental work and modeling elucidates how the bulk structure of the PTL‐electrode offers an additional design dimension to further improve electrolyzer performance. Lastly, a surface modification strategy is applied to a PTL‐electrode to achieve an even higher performing AEMWE (2.3 vs 2.0 A cm −2 at 1.8 V). Overall, this work lays out pathways toward more efficient, durable, and affordable AEMWEs.

Design of Star‐Shaped Trimer Acceptors for High‐Performance (Efficiency > 19%), Photostable, and Mechanically Robust Organic Solar Cells

Abstract High power conversion efficiency (PCE), long‐term stability, and mechanical robustness are prerequisites for the commercial applications of organic solar cells (OSCs). In this study, a new star‐shaped trimer acceptor (TYT‐S) is developed and high‐performance OSCs with a PCE of 19.0%, high photo‐stability (t 80% lifetime = 2600 h under 1‐sun illumination), and mechanical robustness with a crack‐onset strain (COS) of 21.6% are achieved. The isotropic molecular structure of TYT‐S affords efficient multi‐directional charge transport and high electron mobility. Furthermore, its amorphous structure prevents the formation of brittle crystal‐to‐crystal interfaces, significantly enhancing the mechanical properties of the OSC. As a result, the TYT‐S‐based OSCs demonstrate a significantly higher PCE (19.0%) and stretchability (COS = 21.6%) than the linear‐shaped trimer acceptor (TYT‐L)‐based OSCs (PCE = 17.5% and COS = 6.4%) and the small‐molecule acceptor (MYT)‐based OSCs (PCE = 16.5% and COS = 1.3%). In addition, the increased molecular size of TYT‐S, relative to that of MYT and dimer (DYT), suppresses the diffusion kinetics of the acceptor molecules, substantially improving the photostability of the OSCs. Finally, to effectively demonstrate the potential of TYT‐S, intrinsically stretchable (IS)‐OSCs are constructed. The TYT‐S‐based IS‐OSCs exhibit high device stretchability (strain at PCE 80% = 31%) and PCE of 14.4%.

Molecular Precision Engineering for Efficient Binary Organic Photovoltaics through Energy Level and Fibrillar Structure Modulation

Adjusting the energy levels and fibrillar morphology is paramount to enhancing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs). In the present study, an increase in the open-circuit voltage (VOC) is facilitated through the elongation of the alkyl chain within AQx (namely AQx-8), aiming to decrease the free volume ratio (FVR). This reduction in FVR attenuates electron-phonon coupling, thereby augmenting emission efficiency and diminishing the non-radiative energy loss (ΔEnr). To further refine the energy levels and morphological characteristics, the external undecyl chain of AQx-8 is substituted with a shorter carbon chain and cyclohexane noted for its considerable steric hindrance (AQx-H). Additionally, this alteration significantly mitigates intermolecular aggregation, expands the bandgap, and elevates the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level, culminating in an elevated VOC of 0.923 V in devices based on AQx-H. Morphological analysis reveals that blends based on AQx-H exhibit an enhanced multi-length-scale fibrillar structure, which is conducive to exciton dissociation and charge transport, thereby contributing to a high fill factor (FF) nearing 80%. Consequently, this study reports one of the highest binary PCEs documented, standing at 19.5% (with certification at 19.0%).

Enabling energy‐efficient manufacturing of pharmaceutical solid oral dosage forms via integrated techno‐economic analysis and advanced process modeling

Abstract The global pharmaceutical industry is a trillion‐dollar market. However, the pharmaceutical sector often lags in manufacturing innovation and automation which limits its potential to maximize energy efficiency. The integration of techno‐economic analysis (TEA) with advanced process models as part of an overarching smart manufacturing platform, can help industries create business models, which can be adapted for manufacturing to reduce energy consumption and operating costs while ensuring product quality which can further enable a more sustainable process operation. In this study, a rational design of experiment on three unit‐operations (wet granulation, drying, and milling) was performed on a batch (case 1) and continuous (case 2) pharmaceutical process to obtain experimental data. Process models for predicting product quality and energy efficiency of each of the three‐unit operations were developed. The experimental data were used to validate the models and good agreement was observed. The energy consumption of each unit operation was calculated using statistical models relating the power consumption and the process parameters. The developed process models and energy models were further integrated into a TEA framework, which quantified the energy and monetary cost of manufacturing for both batch and continuous manufacturing cases. With this integrated framework, energy costs savings of ~33% was obtained in the continuous manufacturing process (case 2) over the batch process (case 1).

Intramolecular Electric Field Construction in Metal Phthalocyanine as Dopant‐Free Hole Transporting Material for Stable Perovskite Solar Cells with >21 % Efficiency

Abstract Low conductivity and hole mobility in the pristine metal phthalocyanines greatly limit their application in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) as the hole‐transporting materials (HTMs). Here, we prepare a Ni phthalocyanine (NiPc) decorated by four methoxyethoxy units as HTMs. In NiPc, the two oxygen atoms in peripheral substituent have a modified effect on the dipole direction, while the central Ni atom contributes more electron to phthalocyanine ring, thus efficiently increasing the intramolecular dipole. Calculation analyses reveal the extracted holes within NiPc are mainly concentrated on the phthalocyanine core induced by the intramolecular electric field, and further to be transferred by π‐π stacking space channel between NiPc molecules. Finally, the best efficiency of PSCs with NiPc as dopant‐free HTMs realizes a record value of 21.23 % (certified 21.03 %). The PSCs also exhibit the good moisture, heating and light stabilities. This work provides a novel way to improve the performance of PSCs with free‐doped metal phthalocyanines as HTMs.
