Conditioning flat conductors for flat conductor cable production

Apparatus can straighten, anneal, clean, and a tension to stretch a cable one percent to assure uniform cross-sectional area. A conductor passes through temperature controlled distilled water and through a toroid coil. As The conductor enters the water, steam performs the cleaning action. Quenching and annealing also take place.

Levitation-melting technique for metals and alloys

Experimentation resulted in an improved levitation-melting technique for metals and alloys which quickly produces a completly homogeneous melt. Also developed were two levitation coils that permit a wide variety of metals to be levitated in the molten state and a helium quenching method which minimizes contamination and segregation.

Helical tape forming device

Using a device that is not limited to a minimum thickness or width-to-thickness ratio, a very thin metal tape or ribbon is formed into a continuous flat wound helical coil. The device imparts the desired circular shape by squeeze rolling it with an unequal force across its width.

Experimental prediction of performance by superconducting cables

Broken superconductor method of short sample testing makes possible the prediction of the performance of well cooled, stabilized, superconducting cable coils. It yields a field-versus-current curve for a short sample of cable. Plots are given for the superconductor and copper currents at various magnetic field strengths.

Solenoid valve performance characteristics studied

Current and voltage waveforms of a solenoid coil are recorded as the valve opens and closes. Analysis of the waveforms with respect to time and the phase of the valve cycle accurately describes valve performance.

Brushless direct-current motors

Survey results are presented on the use of unconventional motor windings and switching sequences to optimize performance of brushless dc motors. A motor was built, each coil terminal having a separate, accessible lead. With the shaft and all electronics excluded, length and outside diameter measured 1.25 and 0.75 in., respectively.

Pilot-booster control valve

Two-stage, pressure-sensing control valve is designed for servocontrol of 10-inch main tank valve regulating pressure of liquid oxygen in tank and serving to vent tank during filling. Valve uses a negative-rate Belleville spring to cancel positive spring rates of bellows and coil springs.

Intruder detection system

Moving coil geophones are utilized to develop a small, rugged, battery operated system capable of detecting seismic disturbances caused by intruders. Seismic disturbances sensed by each geophone are converted into electrical signals, amplified, and transmitted to remote receiver which provides listener with aural signal.
