Physical Science Informatics: Providing Open Science Access to Microheater Array Boiling Experiment Data

The Physical Science Informatics (PSI) system is the next step in this an effort to make NASA sponsored flight data available to the scientific and engineering community, along with the general public. The experimental data, from six overall disciplines, Combustion Science, Fluid Physics, Complex Fluids, Fundamental Physics, and Materials Science, will present some unique challenges. Besides data in textual or numerical format, large portions of both the raw and analyzed data for many of these experiments are digital images and video, requiring large data storage requirements. In addition, the accessible data will include experiment design and engineering data (including applicable drawings), any analytical or numerical models, publications, reports, and patents, and any commercial products developed as a result of the research. This objective of paper includes the following: Present the preliminary layout (Figure 2) of MABE data within the PSI database. Obtain feedback on the layout. Present the procedure to obtain access to this database.

Mobile and Web Game Development: Using Videogames as an Educational and Outreach Tool

Few tools reach out to capture the imagination and interests of children like video games do. As such, the development of educational applications that foster young minds' interest in science and technology become of the utmost importance. To this end, I spent my summer internship developing outreach and educational applications in conjunction with JPL's Space Place team. This small, but dedicated, team of people manages three NASA websites that focus on presenting science and technology information in such a manner that young children can understand it and develop an interest in the subjects. Besides the websites, with their plethora of educational content presented through hands-on activities, games and informative articles, the team also creates and coordinates the distribution of printed material to museums, astronomy clubs and a huge network of educators.

Emulating an Optical Planetary Access Link with an Aircraft

Video imagery was streamed from the ground to an aircraft using a free-space laser communication link. The link operated at 270 Mb/s over slant ranges of 5-9 km in day and night time background conditions. The experiment was designed to demonstrate autonomous link acquisition and served as a first proof-of-concept for a planetary access link between a surface asset and an orbiter at Mars. System parameters monitored during the link demonstration including acquisition and tracking and communication performance are discussed.

Live Aircraft Encounter Visualization at FutureFlight Central

Researchers at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have developed an aircraft data streaming capability that can be used to visualize live aircraft in near real-time. During a joint Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)/NASA Airborne Collision Avoidance System flight series, test sorties between unmanned aircraft and manned intruder aircraft were shown in real-time at NASA Ames' FutureFlight Central tower facility as a virtual representation of the encounter. This capability leveraged existing live surveillance, video, and audio data streams distributed through a Live, Virtual, Constructive test environment, then depicted the encounter from the point of view of any aircraft in the system showing the proximity of the other aircraft. For the demonstration, position report data were sent to the ground from on-board sensors on the unmanned aircraft. The point of view can be change dynamically, allowing encounters from all angles to be observed. Visualizing the encounters in real-time provides a safe and effective method for observation of live flight testing and a strong alternative to travel to the remote test range.

Optical Flow for Intermediate Frame Interpolation of Multispectral Geostationary Satellite Data

Applications in areas such as weather tracking and modeling, ecosystem monitoring, wildfire detection, and land-cover change are heavily dependent on spatial and temporal resolutions of satellite observations. However, there are typically trade-offs between spatial and temporal resolutions in dataset selection. For instance, geostationary weather tracking satellites are designed to take snapshots many times throughout the day but sensor hardware limits data collection. In this work we tackle this limitation, developing a method for temporal upsampling of multi-spectral satellite imagery using optical flow video interpolation deep convolutional neural networks. The presented model, extends Super SloMo (SSM) from single optical flow estimates to multichannel where flows are computed per band. We apply this technique on 8 multi-spectral bands of NOAA/NASA's GOES-16 mesoscale dataset to temporally enhance full disk hemispheric snapshots from 15 minutes to 1 minute. Through extensive experimentation, we show SSM vastly outperforms the linear interpolation baseline and that multichannel optical flows improves performance on GOES-16. A visual analysis of optical flow vectors clearly identifies hurricanes and large-scale atmospheric dynamics. Furthermore, we discuss challenges and open questions related to optical flow and temporal interpolation of multispectral geostationary satellite imagery.

NASA Leveraging Commercial Communication Ground Stations for Small Satellites

The Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program at NASA has reorganized its operations portfolio into two networks: the Deep Space Network and the new Near Space Network (NSN). With this reorganization, NASA can begin transforming to 100% direct-to-Earth commercial communications services for missions in the near-Earth region. NASA’s leveraging of commercial direct-to-Earth ground stations offers several benefits for the small satellite community, including lower cost, greater coverage, and increased technology infusion. In the fall of 2020, SCaN announced their intention to rely primarily on industry-provided communications services for missions close to Earth by 2030. Commercial services are one way to infuse new technology into the ground station network without requiring an investment from NASA. Digital Video Broadcast, Satellite Second Generation (DVB-S2) is one example of a current technology. When combined with variable coding and modulation (VCM), the system automatically optimizes the data rate based on signal performance, significantly increasing total downlink data volume without an increase in the spacecraft effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP). There are several commercial service providers, including Amazon Web Service (AWS) Ground Station (AGS) and the KSATLITE ground stations that support SmallSat missions using DVB-S2 waveforms for downlinks. This paper identifies some commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) CubeSat/SmallSat DVB-S2 X-band and Ka-band radios. Overall, NASA’s increased dependence on commercial direct-to-Earth ground stations is a significant benefit for the small satellite community.

DRAG CHARACTERISTICS AND DYNAMIC STABILITY IN DESCENT OF A ROTARY PARACHUTE TESTED IN A VERTICAL TUNNEL

An investigation was conducted in the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnel at low speeds to determine the drag characteristics and dynamic stability in descent of a 64-inch-diameter rotary parachute. The drag coefficient of the basic rotary parachute was approximately 1.7 based on total cloth area_ cutting cloth away from the tips of the parachute permitted it to rotate faster and gave a somewhat higher drag coefficient of about 2.1. In general, the rotary parachute was extremely stable in descent, with oscillations of probably less than 1°. Small changes in rigging had no appreciable effect on the performance of the parachute. Accompanying zip folder contains video of the experimental process completed for this document and the related records for the Experimental aerodynamic performance characteristics of a rotor entry vehicle configuration. 1-3.

Detector circuit compensates for vidicon beam current variations

Signal detector circuit compensates for black level shifts in vidicons by dark current cancellation. It clamps the video signal to the dark current component of the signal. The device also compensates for background noise variation or transducer bias fluctuations in other repetitive pulse systems.
