Modal vector estimation for closely-spaced-frequency modes

Identification of modal parameters is made more difficult if the system has repeated frequencies or even closely spaced frequencies. This paper discusses the problems associated with closely-spaced-frequency modes and describes two related methods for dealing with these problems. It is demonstrated that proper identification of the system parameters of such systems requires information from multiple inputs and/or multiple outputs. The analytical basis for the 'minimum coincident response method' is outlined, and examples of the use of these two techniques to extract model parameters are presented.

Coma morphology and dust-emission pattern of periodic Comet Halley. IV - Spin vector refinement and map of discrete dust sources for 1910

A hypothetical continuous ejection of dust from discrete emission sources on the sunlit hemisphere of a rotating comet nucleus is tested against 34 digitally processed plates of Comet Halley over the May 5-June 6, 1910 period, as well as the reported projected lengths of six antisunward jets observed between May 14 and June 6, 1910. A map of the comet's nucleus is presented of whose 13 discrete dust sources only two can be modeled as point-like regions. Attention is given to curious cases of 'chain' activation in which the sources that intersect one another on the surface emit dust sequentially, in successive rotations.

The scaling of model test results to predict intake hot gas reingestion for STOVL aircraft with augmented vectored thrust engines

The difficulties of modeling the complex recirculating flow fields produced by multiple jet STOVL aircraft close to the ground have led to extensive use of experimental model tests to predict intake Hot Gas Reingestion (HGR). Model test results reliability is dependent on a satisfactory set of scaling rules which must be validated by fully comparable full scale tests. Scaling rules devised in the U.K. in the mid 60's gave good model/full scale agreement for the BAe P1127 aircraft. Until recently no opportunity has occurred to check the applicability of the rules to the high energy exhaust of current ASTOVL aircraft projects. Such an opportunity has arisen following tests on a Tethered Harrier. Comparison of this full scale data and results from tests on a model configuration approximating to the full scale aircraft geometry has shown discrepancies between HGR levels. These discrepancies although probably due to geometry and other model/scale differences indicate some reexamination of the scaling rules is needed. Therefore the scaling rules are reviewed, further scaling studies planned are described and potential areas for further work are suggested.

Vector solution for the mean electromagnetic fields in a layer of random particles

The mean electromagnetic fields are found in a layer of randomly oriented particles lying over a half space. A matrix-dyadic formulation of Maxwell's equations is employed in conjunction with the Foldy-Lax approximation to obtain equations for the mean fields. A two variable perturbation procedure, valid in the limit of small fractional volume, is then used to derive uncoupled equations for the slowly varying amplitudes of the mean wave. These equations are solved to obtain explicit expressions for the mean electromagnetic fields in the slab region in the general case of arbitrarily oriented particles and arbitrary polarization of the incident radiation. Numerical examples are given for the application to remote sensing of vegetation.

Approximate polynomial preconditioning applied to biharmonic equations on vector supercomputers

Applying a finite difference approximation to a biharmonic equation results in a very ill-conditioned system of equations. This paper examines the conjugate gradient method used in conjunction with the generalized and approximate polynomial preconditionings for solving such linear systems. An approximate polynomial preconditioning is introduced, and is shown to be more efficient than the generalized polynomial preconditionings. This new technique provides a simple but effective preconditioning polynomial, which is based on another coefficient matrix rather than the original matrix operator as commonly used.

Direct finite element solution on an optical laboratory matrix-vector processor

The first optical laboratory system results employing a direct LU decomposition solution of a system of linear algebraic equations are presented for a finite element problem solution. This also represents the first laboratory demonstration of the use of sign-magnitude negative number representation as well as new bit partitioning techniques to increase the accuracy of an optical encoded processor beyond the number of bit channels available.

Scalar and vector collisional interference in the vibration-rotation absorption spectra of H2 and HD

The only atomic or molecular spectra known to exhibit 'collisional interference' effects are those of H2 and its isotopes. Attention is presently given to the sharp absorption spectra of HD, which demonstrate collisional interference effects is a fashion that while surprising has been experimentally verified and theoretically characterized in detail. Collisional interference can dramatically alter the line shapes usually encountered in dipole absorption spectra, while nevertheless remaining narrow.

Attitude determination and parameter estimation using vector observations

Procedures for attitude determination based on Wahba's loss function are generalized to include the estimation of parameters other than the attitude, such as sensor biases. Optimization with respect to the attitude requires either the singular value decomposition of a 3x3 matrix or finding the maximum eigenvalue and corresponding eigenvector of a 4x4 symmetric matrix, but does not require an a priori estimate of the attitude. Optimization with respect to the other parameters employs an iterative approach, which does require an a priori estimate of these parameters. Conventional state estimation methods require a priori estimates of both the parameters and the attitude, while the algorithms presented in this paper always compute the exact optimal attitude for given values of the parameters. The proposed method is shown to give the correct solution of an example problem. An expression for the covariance of the attitude and parameter estimates is derived.

Does vector-free gravity simulate microgravity? Functional and morphologic attributes of clinorotated nerve and muscle grown in cell culture

Cocultured Xenopus neurons and myocytes were subjected to nonvectorial gravity by clinostat rotation to determine the effects of microgravity on cell development and communications. Observed effects included increases in the myocyte and its nuclear area, fragmentation of nucleoli, the appearance of neuritic aneurysms, decreased growth in the presence of trophic factors, and decreased yolk utilization. These effects were most notable at 1-10 rpm and depended on the onset and duration of rotation. It is found that, in microgravity, cell differentiation is altered by interference with cytoskeleton-related mechanisms. It is suggested that the alteration of the distribution of acetylcholine receptor aggregates on myocytes which occurs might indicate that microgravity affects brain development.

Vector fields and nilpotent Lie algebras

An infinite-dimensional family of flows E is described with the property that the associated dynamical system: x(t) = E(x(t)), where x(0) is a member of the set R to the Nth power, is explicitly integrable in closed form. These flows E are of the form E = E1 + E2, where E1 and E2 are the generators of a nilpotent Lie algebra, which is either free, or satisfies some relations at a point. These flows can then be used to approximate the flows of more general types of dynamical systems.

Geodesy by radio interferometry - Determination of vector motions for sites in the western United States

The use of VBLI to study plate tectonic motion, plate boundary deformation, earth dynamics, and the crustal motions in the western U.S. is discussed. Results from dual frequency (S and X band) mobile VLBI experiments between October 1982 and February 1987 are presented. It is suggested that significant northwest motion is occurring well east of the San Andreas fault.

Optical matrix-vector processing for computational fluid dynamics

An optical processor to solve partial differential equations for computational fluid dynamics applications is considered. This application is new and original for optical processors. The algorithms that are used are optical realizations of the Newton-Raphson method for nonlinear equations and a new optical LU direct decomposition and Gauss-Seidel iterative solution to the resultant linear algebraic equations. These algorithms are used to solve Burger's equation (a specific form of the momentum equation in fluid dynamics). The nonlinear equations provide 1-D velocity data at each time step. Simulation results of optical processing with these algorithms on computational fluid dynamics data is included.
