Study program of NASA/GSFC weld quality monitor system

The Weld Quality Monitor has provided online control through the application of linear transducers. The electronic systems must be upgraded to increase confidence level required in production. The Weld Quality Monitor has been used with a recent model solid state power supply to evaluate ability to differentiate between sound and defective weld joints. The Weld Quality Monitor has been evaluated on Dumet and Kovar to interconnect materials Nickel and Alloy 180 in weld joints used on microelectronic module fabrication. Distinct separation was achieved between low strength welds and sound welds by the Quality Monitor. Evaluation performed indicates a drift level at less than 2 percent on a series of 50 consecutive welds. Operation under shop conditions identified need for controlled electrode impact. This was achieved with pneumatic actuation.

Noncontacting device to indicate deflection of turbopump internal rotating parts

Phase 2 (development) which was concluded for the ultrasonic Doppler device and the light-pipe-reflectance device is reported. An ultrasonic Doppler breadboard system was assembled which accurately measured runout in the J-2 LOX pump impeller during operation. The transducer was mounted on the outside of the pump volute using a C-clamp. Vibration was measured by conducting the ultrasonic wave through the volute housing and through the fluid in the volute to the impeller surface. The impeller vibration was also measured accurately using the light-pipe probe mounted in an elastomeric-gland fitting in the pump case. A special epoxy resin developed for cryogenic applications was forced into the end of the fiber-optic probe to retain the fibers. Subsequently, the probe suffered no damage after simultaneous exposure to 2150 psi and 77 F. Preliminary flash X-radiographs were taken of the turbine wheel and the shaft-bearing-seal assembly, using a 2-megavolt X-ray unit. Reasonable resolution and contrast was obtained. A fast-neutron detector was fabricated and sensitivity was measured. The results demonstrated that the technique is feasible for integrated-time measurements requiring, perhaps, 240 revolutions to obtain sufficient exposure at 35,000 rpm. The experimental verification plans are included.

An investigation of transient pressures and plasma properties in a pinched plasma column

The transient pinched plasma column generated in a linear Z-pinch was studied experimentally and analytically. The plasma column was investigated experimentally with several plasma diagnostics; they were: a rapid response pressure transducer, a magnetic field probe, a voltage probe, and discharge luminosity. Axial pressure profiles on the discharge chamber axis were used to identify three characteristic regions of plasma column behavior: (1) strong axial pressure asymmetry noted early in plasma column lifetime, (2) followed by plasma heating in which there is a rapid rise in static pressure, and (3) a slight decrease static pressure before plasma column breakup. Plasma column lifetime was approximately 5 microseconds. The axial pressure asymmetry was attributed to nonsimultaneous pinching of the imploding current sheet along the discharge chamber axis. The rapid heating could be attributed in part to viscous effects introduced by radial gradients in the axial streaming velocity.

Modification of a fuel-cell engine for control by a digital computer

A manually operated fuel-cell system was modified to be monitored and controlled by a digital computer. The purpose was to have a test item with which to study possible system-computer interface problems. The modification consisted of installing solenoid valves, circuitry, transducers, and limit switches on the system. These modifications permit computer control of load current, reactant purge, water removal, and electrolyte concentration and computer initiation of system shutdown.

Surface tensions of propellants

An apparatus is described for determining the surface tension of propellants by measuring the maximum bubble pressure using two capillaries of different bores. The innovation is the use of a pressure transducer coupled to a bridge supply and a strip chart recorder for registering the development of the pressure difference as the bubble is formed and released. This enables the measurements to be made under controlled atmospheres and to be remotely operated. Preliminary experiments were done on propellant-grade hydrazine and monomethylhydrazine, and on purified hydrazine, at temperatures between 275.4 and 353.2 K. Straight-line expressions and logarithmic expressions reproduce equally well the variation of surface tension with temperature. Contaminated hydrazine, pre-exposed to coupons of 6Al-4V titanium alloy for long periods, gives slightly higher values of surface tension.

Application of boron/epoxy reinforced aluminum stringers and boron/epoxy skid gear for the CH54B helicopter tail cone. Phase 2: Fabrication, inspection and flight test

A CH-54B Skycrane helicopter was fabricated with boron/epoxy reinforced stringers in the tail cone and boron/epoxy tubes in the tail skid. The fabrication of the tail cone was made with conventional tooling, production shop personnel, and no major problems. The flight test program includes a stress and vibration survey using strain gages and vibration transducers located in critical areas. The program to inspect and monitor the reliability of the components is discussed.

A note on pole assignment

It is shown that for a controllable, linear time invariant multivariable system at least max (m,p) poles can be assigned arbitrarily. In certain cases more than max (m,p) oikes can be assigned. This result is particularly useful in designing systems for high integrity in the event of transducer failure. In such an event this design takes advantage of the unequal number of inputs and outputs so as to assure no loss in pole assignability.

Statistical load data processing

A recorder system has been installed on two operational fighter aircrafts. Signal values from a c.g.-acceleration transducer and a strain-gage installation at the wing root were sampled and recorded in digital format on the recorder system. To analyse such load-time histories for fatigue evaluation purposes, a number of counting methods are available in which level crossings, peaks, or ranges are counted. Ten different existing counting principles are defined. The load-time histories are analysed to evaluate these counting methods. For some of the described counting methods, the counting results might be affected by arbitrarily chosen parameters such as the magnitude of load ranges that will be neglected and other secondary counting restrictions. Such influences might invalidate the final counting results entirely. The evaluation shows that for the type of load-time histories associated with most counting methods, a sensible value of the parameters involved can be found.

Advances in measuring techniques for turbine cooling test rigs

Surface temperature distribution measurements for turbine vanes and blades were obtained by measuring the infrared energy emitted by the airfoil. The IR distribution can be related to temperature distribution by suitable calibration methods and the data presented in the form of isotherm maps. Both IR photographic and real time electro-optical methods are being investigated. The methods can be adapted to rotating as well as stationary targets, and both methods can utilize computer processing. Pressure measurements on rotating components are made with a rotating system incorporating 10 miniature transducers. A mercury wetted slip ring assembly was used to supply excitation power and as a signal transfer device. The system was successfully tested up to speeds of 9000 rpm and is now being adapted to measure rotating blade airflow quantities in a spin rig and a research engine.

Modularized instrument system for turbojet engine test facilities

A modular instrument system is being developed to handle the many data channels encountered in turbojet engine testing. Each module contains a group of transducers and all the signal conditioning multiplexing, and digitizing electronics necessary for direct interface with a digital computer. The digital interface within each module is the same for all modules; in addition, each module provides a controlled environment for its contents. A minicomputer in the control room gathers the data, performs on-line calculation and display, and interfaces with a shared recording and computing system. The advantages of this system are: (1) reduced manpower for system installation, setup, and checkout; (2) standardized equipment interfaces; (3) increased reliability through automatic system testing and minimization of manual adjustments; and (4) reduced cost through minimization of wiring and simplification of control room display.

Laboratory and field evaluation of an underwater sand height gage

An underwater sand height gage was investigated. This instrument consisted of two transducers, one screened and one unscreened. Laboratory experimentation included static and dynamic tests with three test sands--fine, medium, and coarse. Field tests were conducted at Rudee Inlet, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Test results showed a linear response to up to 10 inches of sand loading. Deviation observed in identical tests appeared to be due to variation in the density of sand. Density differences reflected varying packing styles which, in turn, were a consequence of grain size and flow regime. Further evaluations of the sand height gage reflect this instrument's potential.

Ultrasonic attenuation in superconducting molybdenum-rhenium alloys.

Investigation of longitudinal sound attenuation in superconducting Mo-Re alloys as a function of temperature, magnetic field, and frequency. Evaporated thin film CdS transducers were used for the measurements at frequencies up to 3 GHz. The normal state attenuation coefficient was found to be proportional to the square of frequency over this frequency range. Measurements in zero magnetic field yielded a value of the energy gap parameter close to the threshold value of 3.56 kTc, appropriate to a weakly coupled dirty limit superconductor.

Effects of wind-tunnel disturbances on hypersonic boundary-layer transition. I, II.

An experimental investigation of the dependence on facility disturbance of transition on sharp cones has been made. In Part I, the sound radiated from the turbulent boundary layer on the walls of several facilities was measured with pressure transducers mounted flush with the cone surface. In Part II, a constant current hot-wire anemometer measured free-stream and cone shock layer disturbances in two hypersonic helium tunnels. Comparison of hot-wire results with surface pressure measurements in one of the helium tunnels indicate the latter data provide an accurate indication of the facility disturbance levels. Both studies show that transition Reynolds numbers correlate in terms of facility rms sound disturbance levels provided the laminar boundary layers on the models are similar.

High-sensitivity receiver for infrared laser communications.

Description of a high-sensitivity wide-bandwidth 10.6-micron heterodyne receiver for space and ground operational use. The receiver includes a cooled HgCdTe infrared mixer diode, a conical scanner for spatial tracking, an acquisition channel for spatial search and station alignment, and an automatic frequency-control channel to maintain a fixed laser frequency offset. The infrared mixer is designed to provide nearly quantum-noise-limited operation over an extended range of mixer temperature, bias voltage, and intermediate frequency. The resultant experimental receiver has a measured noise equivalent power of less than 10 to the minus 19th W/Hz over the 15- to 40-MHz i.f. band for mixer temperatures from 85 to 115 K, and less than 2 x 10 to the minus 19th W/Hz up to 140 K. Mixer 3-dB cutoff frequencies as high as 420 MHz were measured at a mixer temperature of 125 K. An analysis and engineering equations are given for receiver noise components, noise equivalent power, available mixer conversion gain, mixer transducer gain, and quantum-noise factor in terms of such factors as mixer parameters, quantum efficiency, mixer temperature, dynamic conductance, bias voltage, local oscillator power, and i.f. amplifier characteristics.

Aerospace reliability applied to biomedicine.

An analysis is presented that indicates that the reliability and quality assurance methodology selected by NASA to minimize failures in aerospace equipment can be applied directly to biomedical devices to improve hospital equipment reliability. The Space Electric Rocket Test project is used as an example of NASA application of reliability and quality assurance (R&QA) methods. By analogy a comparison is made to show how these same methods can be used in the development of transducers, instrumentation, and complex systems for use in medicine.
