Materials Research in Microgravity 2012

Reducing gravitational effects such as thermal and solutal buoyancy enables investigation of a large range of different phenomena in materials science. The Symposium on Materials Research in Microgravity involved 6 sessions composed of 39 presentations and 14 posters with contributions from more than 14 countries. The sessions concentrated on four different categories of topics related to ongoing reduced-gravity research. Highlights from this symposium will be featured in the September 2012 issue of JOM. The TMS Materials Processing and Manufacturing Division, Process Technology and Modeling Committee and Solidification Committee sponsored the symposium.

Technical Committee on Noise: Researchers and Practitioners

The Technical Committee on Noise (TCNS) includes researchers and industry practitioners interested in understanding noise generation from a variety of sources, its propagation, and its impact on structures, objects, and people. The goal of reducing the impact of this noise, i.e. unwanted sound, has led to innovative model development, measurement techniques, mitigation strategies, and input towards the establishment of regulations. Community noise definition and abatement is of particular interest and motivates the advancement of research on a variety of topics, such as transportation noise, hearing protection, jet and rocket noise, building systems noise and vibration, atmospheric sound propagation, soundscapes, and low-frequency sound. The diverse technical background of TCNS members is essential, given the interdisciplinary nature of this research, and it is mirrored in the topics of special sessions typically held jointly with other ASA technical committees.

Assessment of reverse gun taylor cylinder experimental configuration

Experimental efforts for Taylor-anvil impact tests have often been limited to near room temperature. The ‘Reverse Gun’ method proposed by Gust in 1982 allows for the Taylor impact specimen to be uniformly heated without temperature losses before impact. Through the use of finite element analysis, we explore two topics in this work. First, we examine whether the reverse gun experimental configuration is comparable to the traditional Taylor-anvil setup. Second, we assess the accuracy of several commonly employed flow strength models in terms of their ability to predict the reverse gun experimental results which involve dynamic loading conditions and complex thermo-mechanical coupling. The reverse gun simulations are performed for tantalum targets at initial temperatures in the range 295 K to 1295 K and velocities from 135 m/s to 242 m/s. We show that with suitable care in the modeling of the preheated reverse gun experiments one can make valuable assessments of flow strength models. Given the conditions explored, these observations probe the thermal softening, strain hardening, and strain rate sensitivity of the material.

Comparing Emulation Methods for Computer Models with High Dimensional Output

This Master’s Capstone project will present a comparison of statistical models for computer simulation studies. The four models included in this comparison study were chosen for both their proven and diverse methodologies. We will present a case study on hurricane flood data in the Delaware bay which highlights the strengths and weaknesses of each model when applied to a very large spatial field. As computers have gotten faster, we have become interested in modeling increasingly large spatial fields in both size and resolution. Statistical algorithms that are able to efficiently handle these fields have never been more important. We therefore find this comparison to be extremely topical.

Nuclear Data for High Energy Ion Interactions and Secondary Particle Production

Understanding the harmful effects of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) on space exploration requires a substantial amount of nuclear data. Specifically, the interaction of energetic GCR charged particles with spacecraft materials generates secondary radiations that, through energy deposition, can harm astronauts and electronic systems. By identifying the gaps in our knowledge of the relevant nuclear data – interaction cross sections – and identifying ways to fill those gaps – with measurements, compilations, evaluations, disseminations, reaction modeling, sensitivity studies, and uncertainty quantification – the safety and viability of space exploration can be improved. This work surveys the state of the art in this interdisciplinary field and identifies promising collaborative research topics that have significant potential to advance our understanding of the effects of the space radiation environment on space exploration.

Handbook for the estimation of microwave propagation effects: Link calculations for earth-space paths (path loss and noise estimation)

A single model for a standard of comparison for other models when dealing with rain attenuation problems in system design and experimentation is proposed. Refinements to the Global Rain Production Model are incorporated. Path loss and noise estimation procedures as the basic input to systems design for earth-to-space microwave links operating at frequencies from 1 to 300 GHz are provided. Topics covered include gaseous absorption, attenuation by rain, ionospheric and tropospheric scintillation, low elevation angle effects, radome attenuation, diversity schemes, link calculation, and receiver noise emission by atmospheric gases, rain, and antenna contributions.
