Thermal coupled cluster theory for SU(2) systems

Coupled cluster (CC) has established itself as a powerful theory to study correlated quantum many-body systems. Finite-temperature generalizations of CC theory have attracted considerable interest and have been shown to work as nicely as the ground-state theory. However, most of these recent developments address only fermionic or bosonic systems. The distinct structure of the su(2) algebra requires the development of a similar thermal CC theory for spin degrees of freedom. In this paper, we provide a formulation of our thermofield-inspired thermal CC for SU(2) systems. Here, we apply the thermal CC to the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick system as well as the one-dimensional transverse field Ising model as benchmark applications to highlight the accuracy of thermal CC in the study of finite-temperature phase diagrams in SU(2) systems.

Observation of a van Hove singularity of a surface Fermi arc with prominent coupling to phonons in a Weyl semimetal

A van der Waals coupled Weyl semimetal NbIrTe 4 is investigated by combining scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. Here we observe a sharp peak in the tunneling conductance near the Fermi energy (E F ). Comparison with calculations indicates that the peak originates from a van Hove singularity (vHs) associated with a Lifshitz transition of the surface Fermi-arc state. Interestingly, our tunneling spectroscopy also shows signatures of strong electron-boson coupling. This is potentially due to an anomalously enhanced charge susceptibility coming from the near-E F vHs formation.

Spin liquid to spin glass crossover in the random quantum Heisenberg magnet

We study quantum SU($M$) spins with all-to-all and random Heisenberg exchange interactions of root-mean-square strength $J$. The $M \rightarrow \infty$ model has a spin liquid ground state with the spinons obeying the equations of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Numerical studies of the SU(2) model with $S=1/2$ spins show spin glass order in the ground state, but also display SYK spin liquid behavior in the intermediate frequency spin spectrum. We employ a $1/M$ expansion to describe the crossover from fractionalized fermionic spinons to a confining spin glass state with weak spin glass order $q_{EA}$. The SYK spin liquid behavior persists down to a frequency $\omega_\ast \sim J q_{EA}$, and for $\omega < \omega_\ast$, the spectral density is linear in $\omega$, thus quenching the extensive zero temperature entropy of the spin liquid. Furthermore, the linear $\omega$ spectrum is qualitatively similar to that obtained earlier using bosonic spinons for large $q_{EA}$. We argue that the extensive SYK spin liquid entropy is transformed as $T \rightarrow 0$ to an extensive complexity of the spin glass state.

Coexistence of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid and magnetic order in a spin-1 antiferromagnet

We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with the first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ and a three-spin scalar chirality term $J_\chi$. Using the density matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out a global phase diagram including various magnetic order phases and an emergent quantum spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a bosonic non-Abelian Moore-Read state from the fingerprint of the entanglement spectra and identification of a full set of topological sectors. We further unveil a stripe magnetic order coexisting with this spin liquid. Furthermore, our results not only establish a rare example of non-Abelian spin liquids in simple spin systems but also demonstrate the coexistence of fractionalized excitations and magnetic order beyond mean-field descriptions.

First-principles prediction of the Landau parameter for Fermi liquids near the unitarity limit

This paper explores the behavior of systems of cold fermions as they approach unitary above the critical temperature. Symmetry arguments indicate that at unitarity the Fermi-liquid picture breaks down. As we move away from unitarity, by decreasing the scattering length, the dilaton, the Goldstone boson resulting from the spontaneous breaking of Schrodinger symmetry by the Fermi sea, becomes gapped. At energies below this gap, the interaction between quasiparticles will be dominated by dilaton exchange. Here, the dilaton mass can, in turn, be related via anomaly matching to the scattering length and contact parameter within the confines of a systematic expansion.

Classification of (2 + 1) D invertible fermionic topological phases with symmetry

Here we provide a classification of invertible topological phases of interacting fermions with symmetry in two spatial dimensions for general fermionic symmetry groups G f and general values of the chiral central charge c - . Here G f is a central extension of a bosonic symmetry group G b by fermion parity, (-1) F , specified by a second cohomology class [ω 2 ]∈ $\mathscr{H}^2$(Gb,$\mathbb{Z}_2$). Our approach proceeds by gauging fermion parity and classifying the resulting G b symmetry-enriched topological orders while keeping track of certain additional data and constraints. We perform this analysis through two perspectives, using G-crossed braided tensor categories and Spin(2c - ) 1 Chern-Simons theory coupled to a background G gauge field. These results give a way to characterize and classify invertible fermionic topological phases in terms of a concrete set of data and consistency equations, which is more physically transparent and computationally simpler than the more abstract methods using cobordism theory and spectral sequences. Our results also generalize and provide a different approach to the recent classification of fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases by Wang and Gu, which have chiral central charge c - = 0. We show how the tenfold way classification of topological insulators and superconductors fits into our scheme, along with general nonperturbative constraints due to certain choices of c - and G f . Mathematically, our results also suggest an explicit general parametrization of deformation classes of (2 + 1)D invertible topological quantum field theories with G f symmetry.

Possible continuous transition from fractional quantum Hall to stripe phase at ν e = 7 / 3

We study the phase diagram of the ν e = 7/3 state in the N=1 Landau level in the presence of band mass anisotropy. Using the density matrix renormalization group on an infinite cylinder geometry, we find a continuous transition from the topologically ordered Laughlin fractional quantum Hall state to a stripe phase with a period of approximately five and a half magnetic lengths. The transition is driven by the condensation of the magnetoroton mode which becomes gapless at the critical point. We interpret the transition within the composite-boson theory as the onset of stripe order in a superfluid background, resulting from the roton mode going soft.

Superconductivity out of a non-Fermi liquid: Free energy analysis

In this paper, we present an in-depth analysis of the condensation energy E c for a superconductor in a situation when superconductivity emerges out of a non-Fermi liquid due to pairing mediated by a massless boson. This is the case for electronic-mediated pairing near a quantum-critical point in metal, for pairing in SYK-type models, and for phonon-mediated pairing in the properly defined limit, when the dressed Debye frequency vanishes. We consider a subset of these quantum-critical models, in which the pairing in a channel with a proper spatial symmetry is described by an effective 0 + 1 dimensional model with the effective dynamical interaction V(Ω m ) = g¯ γ /|Ω m | γ , where γ is model-specific (the γ model). In previous papers, we argued that the pairing in the γ model is qualitatively different from that in a Fermi liquid, and the gap equation at T = 0 has an infinite number of topologically distinct solutions, Δ n (ω m ), where an integer n, running between 0 and infinity, is the number of zeros of Δ n (ω m ) on the positive Matsubara axis. This gives rise to the set of extrema of E c at E c,n , of which E c,0 is the global minimum. Here, the spectrum E c,n is discrete for a generic γ < 2 but becomes continuous at γ = 2–0. Here, we discuss in more detail the profile of the condensation energy near each E c,n and the transformation from a discrete to a continuous spectrum at γ → 2. We also discuss the free energy and the specific heat of the γ model in the normal state.

Quantum many-body scars from Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen states in bilayer systems

Quantum many-body scar states are special eigenstates of nonintegrable models with distinctive entanglement features that give rise to infinitely long-lived coherent dynamics under quantum quenches from certain initial states. Here, we elaborate on a construction of quantum many-body scar states in which they emerge from Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen states in systems with two layers, wherein the two layers are maximally entangled. We apply this construction to spin systems as well as systems of itinerant fermions and bosons and demonstrate how symmetries can be harnessed to enhance its versatility. We show that several well-known examples of quantum many-body scars, including the tower of states in the spin-1 XY model and the η-pairing states in the Fermi-Hubbard model, can be understood within this formalism. We also demonstrate how an infinite tower of many-body scar states can emerge in bilayer Bose-Hubbard models with charge conservation.

Robust analytic continuation of Green's functions via projection, pole estimation, and semidefinite relaxation

Green's functions of fermions are described by matrix-valued Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions. Since analytic continuation is fundamentally an ill-posed problem, the causal space described by the matrix-valued Herglotz-Nevanlinna structure can be instrumental in improving the accuracy and in enhancing the robustness with respect to noise. We demonstrate a three-pronged procedure for robust analytic continuation called PES: (1) projection of data to the causal space; (2) estimation of pole locations; and (3) semidefinite relaxation within the causal space. We compare the performance of PES with the recently developed Nevanlinna and Carathéodory continuation methods and find that PES is more robust in the presence of noise and does not require the usage of extended precision arithmetics. We also demonstrate that a causal projection improves the performance of the Nevanlinna and Carathéodory methods. The PES method is generalized to bosonic response functions, for which the Nevanlinna and Carathéodory continuation methods have not yet been developed. Furthermore, it is particularly useful for studying spectra with sharp features, as they occur in the study of molecules and band structures in solids.

Global quantum phase diagram and non-Abelian chiral spin liquid in a spin- 3 2 square-lattice antiferromagnet

Since strong quantum fluctuations are essential for the emergence of quantum spin liquids, there have been extensive exploration and identification of spin liquid candidates in spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ systems, while such activities are rare in higher spin systems. Here we report an example of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid emerging in a spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice. By tuning Heisenberg exchange interaction and scalar chirality interaction, we map out a quantum phase diagram enclosing three conventional magnetic orders and a chiral spin liquid based on density-matrix renormalization group studies. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a long-sought bosonic version of the Read-Rezayi state that supports non-Abelian Fibonacci anyonic statistics, identified by the ground state entanglement spectrum. Significantly, we establish that the non-Abelian chiral spin liquid emerges through the enlarged local degrees of freedom and enhanced quantum fluctuations near the classical phase boundaries of competing magnetic orders. Finally, our numerical discovery of an exotic quantum spin liquid in a spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ system suggests a route for discovering fractionalized quantum phases in frustrated higher spin magnetic compounds.

Renormalization of Ising cage-net model and generalized foliation

A large class of type-I fracton models, including the X-cube model, have been found to be fixed points of the foliated renormalization group (RG). The system size of such foliated models can be changed by adding or removing decoupled layers of 2D topological states and continuous deformation of the Hamiltonian. In this paper, we study a closely related model—the Ising cage-net model—and find that this model is not foliated in the same sense. In fact, we point out certain unnatural restrictions in the foliated RG, and find that removing these restrictions leads to a generalized foliated RG under which the Ising cage-net model is a fixed point, and which includes the original foliated RG as a special case. The Ising cage-net model thus gives a prototypical example of the generalized foliated RG, and its system size can be changed either by condensing/uncondensing bosonic planon excitations near a 2D plane or through a linear-depth quantum circuit in the same plane. Additionally, we show that these two apparently different RG procedures are closely related, as they lead to the same gapped boundary when implemented in part of a plane. Finally, we briefly discuss the implications for foliated fracton phases, whose universal properties will need to be reexamined in light of the generalized foliated RG.

Nonlinear Lifshitz photon theory in condensed matter systems

We present an interacting theory of a U(1) gauge boson with a quadratic dispersion relation, which we call the "nonlinear Lifshitz photon theory.'' The Lifshitz photon is a three-dimensional generalization of the Tkachenko mode in rotating superfluids. Starting from the Wigner crystal of charged particles coupled to a dynamical U(1) gauge field, after integrating out gapped degrees of freedom, we arrive at the Lagrangian for the nonlinear Lifshitz photon. The symmetries of the theory include a global U(1) 1-form symmetry and nonlinearly realized "magnetic" translation and rotation symmetries. The interaction terms in the theory lead to the decay of the Lifshitz photon, the rate of which we estimate. We show that the Wilson loop, which plays the role of the order parameter of the spontaneous breaking of the 1-form global symmetry, deviates from the perimeter law by an additional logarithmic factor. Here, we explore potential connections to other condensed matter systems, with a particular focus on quantum spin ice and ferromagnets. Finally, we generalize our theory to higher dimensions.

Entropy and de Haas–van Alphen oscillations of a three-dimensional marginal Fermi liquid

Here we study de Haas-van Alphen oscillations in a marginal Fermi liquid resulting from a three-dimensional metal tuned to a quantum-critical point (QCP). We show that the conventional approach based on extensions of the Lifshitz-Kosevich formula for the oscillation amplitudes becomes inapplicable when the correlation length exceeds the cyclotron radius. This breakdown is due to (i) non-analytic finite-temperature contributions to the fermion self-energy (ii) an enhancement of the oscillatory part of the self-energy by quantum fluctuations, and (iii) non-trivial dynamical scaling laws associated with the quantum critical point. We properly incorporate these effects within the Luttinger-Ward-Eliashberg framework for the thermodynamic potential by treating the fermionic and bosonic contributions on equal footing. As a result, we obtain the modified expressions for the oscillations of entropy and magnetization that remain valid in the non-Fermi liquid regime.

Quantum order by disorder in frustrated spin nanotubes

Here we investigate quantum order by disorder in a frustrated spin nanotube formed by wrapping a J1–J2 Heisenberg model at 45° around a cylinder. Using Schwinger boson theory and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), we have computed the ground-state phase diagram to reveal a Z2 phase in which collinear spin stripes form a right- or left-handed helix around the nanotube. We have derived an analytic estimate for the critical η c = J 1 /2J 2 of the Z 2 -helical phase transition, which is in agreement with the DMRG results. By evaluating the entanglement spectrum and nonlocal string order parameters we discuss the topology of the Z 2 -helical phase.

Topological Kondo effect with spinful Majorana fermions

Motivated by the importance of studying topological superconductors beyond the mean-field approximation, we here investigate mesoscopic islands of time-reversal-invariant topological superconductors. We characterize the spectrum in the presence of strong order-parameter fluctuations in the presence of an arbitrary number of Kramers pairs of Majorana edge states and study the effect of coupling the Coulomb blockaded island to external leads. In the case of an odd fermionic parity on the island, we derive an unconventional Kondo Hamiltonian in which metallic leads couple to both topological Majorana degrees of freedom (which keep track of the parity in different leads) and the overall spin 1 2 in the island. For the simplest case of a single wire (two pairs of Majorana edge states), we demonstrate that anisotropies are irrelevant in the weak coupling renormalization group flow. This permits us to solve the Kondo problem in the vicinity of a Toulouse-type point using Abelian bosonization. We demonstrate a residual ground-state entropy of ln ( 2 ) , which is protected by spin-rotation symmetry, but reduced to ln ( 2 ) (as in the spinless topological Kondo effect) by symmetry-breaking perturbations. In the symmetric case, we further demonstrate the simultaneous presence of both Fermi-liquid and non-Fermi-liquid-like thermodynamics (depending on the observable) and derive charge and spin transport signatures of the Coulomb blockaded island. Parity-violating inelastic electron-proton scattering at low Q 2 above the resonance region

We report the measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry for the inelastic scattering of electrons from the proton, at $Q^2 = 0.082$ GeV$^2$ and $ W = 2.23$ GeV, above the resonance region. The result $A_{\rm Inel} = - 13.5 \pm 2.0 ({\rm stat}) \pm 3.9 ({\rm syst})$ ppm agrees with theoretical calculations, and helps to validate the modeling of the $\gamma Z$ interference structure functions $F_1^{\gamma Z}$ and $F_2^{\gamma Z}$ used in those calculations, which are also used for determination of the two-boson exchange box diagram ($\Box_{\gamma Z}$) contribution to parity-violating elastic scattering measurements. A positive parity-violating asymmetry for inclusive $\pi^-$ production was observed, as well as positive beam-normal single-spin asymmetry for scattered electrons and a negative beam-normal single-spin asymmetry for inclusive $\pi^-$ production.

Evolution of collectivity in 118 Xe

A recoil-distance Doppler shift experiment has been performed using the Pd 102 ( F 19 , p 2 n ) reaction at a beam energy of 73 MeV to measure the lifetime of excited states in Xe 118 . Additionally, the differential decay-curve method using γ γ coincidences and a gating procedure that allows to extract the lifetime without feeding assumptions has been employed. The lifetimes obtained for the yrast states up to spin-parity 8 + are compared with interacting boson model calculations and Xe 118 can be classified as a transitional nucleus between the spherical and a deformed shape. Systematics of the B ( E 2 ) values for the 2 + → 0 + and 4 + → 2 + transitions in the isotopic chains of tin, tellurium and xenon are presented. It is proposed that a “critical point” exists at which the B ( E 2 ; 4 + → 2 + ) / B ( E 2 ; 2 + → 0 + ) ratio drops to unity for lower neutron numbers within the isotopic chain. The position of the “critical point” varies with proton number, i.e., it is presumed to be located at the same mass number A = 114 in the Sn, Te, and Xe isotopes.
