Development of helicopter transmission seals, task 2

High speed helicopter transmission seal concepts were designed, fabricated and tested. The concepts were a dual element split ring seal and a circumferential seal. The tests were performed in a rig using an actual input quill assembly. The test conditions were selected to simulate transmission operation and were 230 F oil temperature, and a sliding speed of 9400 ft/min. The split ring seal exhibited gross leakage and was considered unsatisfactory, while the circumferential seal leakage was less than 1 c.c./hour; this leakage is within acceptable limits. The circumferential seal wear was only to .0005 inches during a 100 hour run (40 starts and stops). During a 40 hour contamination test (mesh silica flour) the seal total wear was a maximum of .004 inches. This wear is considered acceptable.

Monopropellant hydrazine resistoject: Engineering model fabrication and test task

The monopropellant hydrazine resistojet, termed the electrothermal hydrazine thruster (EHT) by TRW systems, thermally decomposes anhydrous hydrazine propellant to produce a high-temperature, low-molecular-weight gas for expulsion through a propulsive nozzle. The EHT developed for this program required about 3-5 watts of electrical power and produced 0.020 to 0.070 pound of thrust over the inlet pressure range of 100 to 400 psia. The thruster was designed for both pulsed and steady state operation. A summary of the GSFC original requirements and GSFC modified requirements, and the performance of the engineering model EHT is given. The experimental program leading to the engineering model EHT design, modifications necessary to achieve the required thruster life capability, and the results of the life test prgram. Other facets of the program, including analyses, preliminary design, specifications, data correlation, and recommendations for a flight model are discussed.

Design integration and noise studies for jet STOL aircraft. Task 7A: Augmentor wing cruise blowing valveless system. Volume 2: Design exploration

A design integration study program was conducted to determine size and performance parameters of an augmentor wing cruise blowing (valveless) system in a 150-passenger STOL airplane for the purpose of defining size and configuration of static rig, flow duct, and wind tunnel test hardware. The studies encompassed blowing systems powered by low-pressure (single stage) and high-pressure (three and four stage) engine fans. A range of wing aspect ratios, wing thicknesses, and duct flow velocity effects were investigated to establish airplane characteristics which minimize takeoff gross weight while achieving sideline noise requirements for an advanced commercial STOL airplane.

Preflight SL-1/SL-3 Skylab VHF ranging coverage (nominal TPI). Antenna and propagation studies for spacecraft systems, task E-531

A preflight assessment of the Skylab VHF ranging coverage for the rendezvous portion of the nominal SL-1/SL-3 mission is reported, assuming a 27 July 1973 SL-3 launch. Data are based on a nominal attitude trajectory, which has the Saturn workshop in a solar inertial attitude throughout the rendezvous; the CSM terminal phase initiation maneuver is nominal. An addendum to this report is being prepared, which considers the effects of early and late TPI maneuvers. Curves are presented which show the variation in received power levels on both spacecraft-to-spacecraft links from about 600 n.mi. range to CSM and SWS station keeping. Appropriate threshold levels are shown on these received power curves to indicate zero circuit margins for the ranging function.

Mission requirements for a manned earth observatory. Task 2: Reference mission definition and analyiss, volume 2

The mission requirements and conceptual design of manned earth observatory payloads for the 1980 time period are discussed. Projections of 1980 sensor technology and user data requirements were used to formulate typical basic criteria pertaining to experiments, sensor complements, and reference missions. The subjects discussed are: (1) mission selection and prioritization, (2) baseline mission analysis, (3) earth observation data handling and contingency plans, and (4) analysis of low cost mission definition and rationale.
