Strain Improvements that Keep Algae Ponds Growing Strong

A challenge for algal biofuel development is finding strains of algae best suited for producing copious amounts of oil quickly and under industrial-scale conditions. Furthermore, maintaining pond health is also challenging—deteriorating health in a small fraction of algal cells within a pond can quickly lead to the death of the entire pond’s population. To overcome these challenges, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) scientist Christina Steadman and team designed a process to optimize algal physiology and metabolism in cultures by interrogating specific characteristics of the algae cells. This process uses flow cytometry methods and solves two problems: the LANL team can quickly detect potential pond problems, and use this process to streamline the screening of potential algae candidates for biofuel production.

New Approaches to Strong Dynamics (Final Report)

In this report we summarize the research which was performed during the period 6/1/2019 - 3/31/2020 when this award was active. Research was conducted by PI Poland at the Yale University Physics Department within the context of the high energy theory group. A portion of the research was carried out with Yale PhD student Soner Albayrak who was supported by this grant, as well as with Yale postdoc Zhijin Li, who was partially supported by this grant.

ASCEND: Asymptotically compatible strong form foundations for nonlocal discretization

Nonlocal models naturally handle a range of physics of interest to SNL, but discretization of their underlying integral operators poses mathematical challenges to realize the accuracy and robustness commonplace in discretization of local counterparts. This project focuses on the concept of asymptotic compatibility, namely preservation of the limit of the discrete nonlocal model to a corresponding well-understood local solution. We address challenges that have traditionally troubled nonlocal mechanics models primarily related to consistency guarantees and boundary conditions. For simple problems such as diffusion and linear elasticity we have developed complete error analysis theory providing consistency guarantees. We then take these foundational tools to develop new state-of-the-art capabilities for: lithiation-induced failure in batteries, ductile failure of problems driven by contact, blast-on-structure induced failure, brittle/ductile failure of thin structures. We also summarize ongoing efforts using these frameworks in data-driven modeling contexts. This report provides a high-level summary of all publications which followed from these efforts.

Magnetic Reconnection in Strongly-Magnetized, Weakly-Collisional Plasmas: Onset, Turbulence, and Energy-Partition in 3D, Plasmoid-Dominated Regimes

This project is concerned with theoretical and numerical studies of magnetic reconnection. Key areas of focus are the reconnection onset (how reconnection gets started), energy partition (how the magnetic energy gets distributed during a reconnection event), and the effect of background turbulence on reconnection. We aim to shed light on these issues in kinetic plasmas (i.e., plasmas where the collisional mean free path is long compared to the length-scales of interest), with emphasis on 3D geometries.

Strong Interaction Studies with Medium Energy Probes

The PI, Kam Seth, and his group have engaged in nuclear and medium-energy particle physics for several decades. This report is the final one in a long successful scientific effort. During the last funding cycle, the Seth group contributed in important ways to the commissioning of the GlueX experiment at JLAB. Prior to joining GlueX, they were long-standing members of the CLEO Collaboration. Their scientific production includes measurements of hadronic cross sections pertinent to the (g-2) muon anomaly, the measurement of certain rare branching fractions of the Omega-minus baryon, and the observation of the first exclusive photoproduction of J/psi in Gluex. Two postdocs, Sean Dobbs and Ting Xiao, secured good faculty positions and are successfully pursuing their own research agendas.
