LSST Commissioning Camera

The LSST Commissioning Camera (LSSTComCam) was mounted on the Simonyi Survey Telescope in August 2022 and observed for seven weeks in late 2024 until it was removed from the telescope in December 2024. It is a smaller, fully functional version of LSSTCam, with only the central raft of 9 4k x 4k CCDs (all ITL sensors) and comprising 144 megapixels. Every CCD has 16 amplifiers, each reading 1 million pixels. LSSTComCam was designed to enable end-to-end testing of the observatory’s systems, including data acquisition, image processing, and observatory operations.

Review of NASTRAN development relative to efficiency of execution

This paper reviews the development of NASTRAN relative to the efficiency of execution, with particular emphasis on those items which have changed significantly since the original release of NASTRAN. Features discussed include main and secondary storage utilization, matrix packing, matrix assembly, matrix multiplication, matrix decomposition and equation solution. Also a brief look into the future discusses the questions of faster arithmetic units and more effective storage utilization. In some cases the improvements in NASTRAN efficiency have resulted from taking advantage of hardware developments, while in other cases increased efficiency has resulted from improvements in the state of the art for data processing or matrix operations. The modular design of NASTRAN has made it possible to improve the efficiency in many parts of NASTRAN without changing the basic design of the program.

Lunar surface cosmic ray experiment

The galactic cosmic ray and solar flare experiment on Apollo 16 is reported. The published papers presented describe the experiment, equipment, data processing techniques, and operational history. The principle findings include: (1) The composition of heavy ions in interplanetary space at energies between approximately 30 and 130 MeV/nucleon is the same, within experimental errors. (2) The ability of a Lexan stack to determine simultaneously the energy spectra of major elements from He up to Fe in the energy interval 0.2 to 30 MeV/nucleon revealed systematic changes in the composition of solar flare particles as a function of energy. (3) Heavy ions emitted in a solar flare appear to be completely stripped of electrons, and are not in charge equilibrium at the time of acceleration and releases from the sun.

Holographic and ultrasonic detection of bond flaws in aluminum panels reinforced with boron-epoxy

An experimental investigation was made of the application of holographic interferometry to the nondestructive detection of unbonded areas (flaws) in bonded panels. Flaw detection results were compared with results obtained with an ultrasonic flaw detector. Holography, with panel deformation accomplished by a reduction in ambient pressure, is less sensitive for flaws beneath 5 and 10 plies of boron-epoxy than the ultrasonic method, though it does have its operational advantages. A process for the manufacture of bonded panels which incorporate known unbonded areas was also developed. The unbonded areas were formed without the use of foreign materials, which makes the method suitable for the construction of reference standards for bonded panels whenever needed for the proper setup of ultrasonic flaw-detection instruments.

Command and data handling for Atmosphere Explorer satellite

The command and data-handling subsystem of the Atmosphere Explorer satellite provides the necessary controls for the instrumentation and telemetry, and also controls the satellite attitude and trajectory. The subsystem executes all command information within the spacecraft, either in real time (as received over the S-band command transmission link) or remote from the command site (as required by the orbit operations schedule). Power consumption in the spacecraft is optimized by suitable application and removal of power to various instruments; additional functions include control of magnetic torquers and of the orbit-adjust propulsion subsystem. Telemetry data from instruments and the spacecraft equipment are formatted into a single serial bit stream. Attention is given to command types, command formats, decoder operation, and command processing functions.

Organic chemistry and biology of the interstellar medium

Interstellar organic chemistry is discussed as the field of study emerging from the discovery of microwave lines of formaldehyde and of hydrogen cyanide in the interstellar medium. The reliability of molecular identifications and comparisons of interstellar and cometary compounds are considered, along with the degradational origin of simple organics. It is pointed out that the contribution of interstellar organic chemistry to problems in biology is not substantive but analogical. The interstellar medium reveals the operation of chemical processes which, on earth and perhaps on vast numbers of planets throughout the universe, led to the origin of life, but the actual molecules of the interstellar medium are unlikely to play any significant biological role.

Recent advancements in information extraction methodology and hardware for earth resources survey systems

The present work discusses some recent developments in preprocessing and extractive processing techniques and hardware and in user applications model development for earth resources survey systems. The Multivariate Interactive Digital Analysis System (MIDAS) is currently being developed, and is an attempt to solve the problem of real time multispectral data processing in an operational system. The main features and design philosophy of this system are described. Examples of wetlands mapping and land resource inventory are presented. A user model developed for predicting the yearly production of mallard ducks from remote sensing and ancillary data is described.

Signal processing and display interface studies

Signal processing equipment specifications, operating and test procedures, and systems design and engineering are described. Five subdivisions of the overall circuitry are treated: (1) the spectrum analyzer; (2) the spectrum integrator; (3) the velocity discriminator; (4) the display interface; and (5) the formatter. They function in series: (1) first in analog form to provide frequency resolution, (2) then in digital form to achieve signal to noise improvement (video integration) and frequency discrimination, and (3) finally in analog form again for the purpose of real-time display of the significant velocity data. The formatter collects binary data from various points in the processor and provides a serial output for bi-phase recording. Block diagrams are used to illustrate the system.

Environment-sensitive manipulator control

Environment-sensitive manipulator control (control systems capable of controlling manipulator motion based on real-time response to sensor data obtained during the attempt to perform a requested task) is described, and experiments on (1) proximity control in manipulation and (2) application of an articulated and adaptively controlled hand-to-environment-sensitive manipulator control are reported. The efficiency of such systems is determined by the separation of control and data processing functions between operator and computer.

Development of beam lead RF integrated circuits

This paper describes the design and development of a set of multifunction VHF/UHF integrated circuits aimed at providing a major improvement in spacecraft radio reliability through low stress operation and the processing of these circuits in beam-lead form. The methods evolved for the high frequency characterization of the devices are discussed together with the design of suitable test fixtures. Typical test results and the distribution of test parameters are presented. A unique carrier for beam-lead devices is described, and the need for such a device is discussed. The application of the carrier to device screening, burn-in and drift measurements is discussed together with the incentives for providing these capabilities. An overview of the integration of the devices into the spacecraft radio is given and candidate assembly processes are discussed. The technology impact of this approach upon future spacecraft radio systems is qualitatively examined.
