Simulation and visualization of face seal motion stability by means of computer generated movies

A computer aided design method for mechanical face seals is described. Based on computer simulation, the actual motion of the flexibly mounted element of the seal can be visualized. This is achieved by solving the equations of motion of this element, calculating the displacements in its various degrees of freedom vs. time, and displaying the transient behavior in the form of a motion picture. Incorporating such a method in the design phase allows one to detect instabilities and to correct undesirable behavior of the seal. A theoretical background is presented. Details of the motion display technique are described, and the usefulness of the method is demonstrated by an example of a noncontacting conical face seal.

Means for growing ribbon crystals without subjecting the crystals to thermal shock-induced strains

A susceptor particularly suited for use in growing a ribbon crystal employing edge defined film fed growth techniques is described. The susceptor includes a die through which a melt is drawn for forming a crystal ribbon. This is combined with a coolant delivery system characterized by a pair of jets for directing a stream of fluid coolant along a path extended to impinge on the susceptor in close proximity with the die in nonincident relation with the crystal being grown.

Experiments for improved positioning by means of integrated Doppler satellite observations and the NNSS broadcast ephemeris

A study to improve position determination using broadcast ephemeris in Doppler data reduction is presented. The uncertainty of the broadcast ephemeris was assessed, and sample autocovariances were computed for acceleration, velocity, and position considering the state disturbance as a signal. An experiment was made in which three stations coobserved 12 passes, and the removal of the radial bias resulted in a chord distance which was in better agreement with the ground survey. In the second experiment, the station positions of the first test simulated the range observations, and the autocovariance function of the acceleration signal in the Cartesian coordinate system was used in an adaptive filtering procedure to improve the state of the satellite in one pass.

Time analysis of volcanic activity on Io by means of plasma observations

A model of Io volcanism in which the probability of activity obeys a binomial distribution is presented. Observed values of the electron density obtained over a 3-year period by ground-based spectroscopy are fitted to such a distribution. The best fit is found for a total number of 15 volcanoes with a probability of individual activity at any time of 0.143. The Pioneer 10 ultraviolet observations are reinterpreted as emissions of sulfur and oxygen ions and are found to be consistent with a plasma much less dense than that observed by the Voyager spacecraft. Late 1978 and the first half of 1979 are shown to be periods of anomalous volcanicity. Rapid variations in electron density are related to enhanced radial diffusion.

Electrophoretic cell separation by means of microspheres

The electrophoretic mobility of fixed human erythrocytes immunologically labeled with poly(vinylpyridine) or poly(glutaraldehyde) microspheres was reduced by approximately 40%. This observation was utilized in preparative scale electrophoretic separations of fixed human and turkey erythrocytes, the mobilities of which under normal physiological conditions do not differ sufficiently to allow their separation by continuous flow electrophoresis. We suggest that resolution in the electrophoretic separation of cell subpopulations, currently limited by finite and often overlapping mobility distributions, may be significantly enhanced by immunospecific labeling of target populations using microspheres.

A numerical model of the zonal mean circulation of the middle atmosphere

The paper presents a simulation of the zonally averaged circulation in the middle atmosphere using a numerical model based on the primitive equations in log pressure coordinates. The circulation is driven radiatively by heating due to solar ultraviolet absorption by ozone and infrared cooling due to carbon dioxide and ozone; Rayleigh friction with a a short time constant above 70 km is included to simulate the strong mechanical dissipation which is hypothesized to exist in the vicinity of the mesopause due to turbulence associated with gravity waves and tides near the mesopause.

Determination of deep level capture cross sections in wide band-gap semiconductors by means of an electron beam

The paper presents a general theory for the determination of the short circuit current generated by a sinusoidally amplitude-modulated electron beam in the presence of recombination centers with an arbitrary number of charge states. It is shown that a measurement of the coherent phase shift with respect to the incident beam as a function of the modulation frequency of the beam ascertains the magnitudes of electron and hole capture cross sections. The surface exposed to the electron beam must have a negligible surface recombination velocity for the measurements to be unambiguous.

Numerical derivation of linear perturbation model from nonlinear real-time vehicle simulations - A means of validation and increased credibility

A numerical technique has been developed which generates linear perturbation models from nonlinear real-time aircraft vehicle simulations at Langley Research Center. The technique is very general and can be applied to simulations of any system described by nonlinear differential equations. Linear models about various trim conditions have been obtained from simulations of the Boeing 737, Northrop F5-E, Cessna 180, Sikorsky CH-54, and NASA/Army Rotor Systems Research Aircraft (RSRA). One use of the derived linear models is as a validation and verification tool for the nonlinear simulation.

Aerodynamic side-force alleviator means

An apparatus for alleviating high angle of attack side force on slender pointed cylindrical forebodies such as fighter aircraft, missiles and the like is described. A symmetrical pair of helical separation trips was employed to disrupt the leeside vortices normally attained. The symmetrical pair of trips starts at either a common point or at space points on the upper surface of the forebody and extends along separate helical paths along the circumference of the forebody.

Measurements of interactions between acoustic fields and nonuniform mean flow

Two problems crucial to the stability of longitudinal acoustic waves in solid rocket motors were examined experimentally. The first is the dissipation of energy associated with an average flow inward at the lateral boundary. Measurements reported here, though subject to considerable experimental error, show that the actual losses are much larger than predicted by the approximate one dimensional analysis. The second problem is the attenuation of waves accompanying reflection by the nonuniform flow in a choked exhaust nozzle. Emphasis on technique, to provide data relatively easily and inexpensively. It appears that good results can be obtained in a routine manner using small supersonic wind tunnel operated as an open cycle. At least for Mach numbers up to 0.04 at the nozzle entrance, difficulties with signal/noise are satisfactorily overcome with a tracking filter.

Ways of increasing muscular activity by means of isometric muscular exertion

The effect of isometric muscular exertion on the human body was investigated by having subjects perform basic movements in a sitting position in the conventional manner with additional muscle tension at 50% maximum force and at maximum force. The pulse, arterial pressure, skin temperature, respiratory rate, minute respiratory volume and electrical activity of the muscles involved were all measured. Performance of the exercises with maximum muscular exertion for 20 sec and without movement resulted in the greatest shifts in these indices; in the conventional manner substantial changes did not occur; and with isometric muscular exertion with 50% maximum force with and without movement, optimal functional shifts resulted. The latter is recommended for use in industrial exercises for the prevention of hypodynamia. Ten exercises are suggested.

Simulation of the magnetic structure of the inner heliosphere by means of non-spherical source surface

A new method for mapping the Sun's magnetic field B from the photosphere through the corona and interplanetary space is presented. The method entails the derivation of B from a scalar potential within a current-free annular volume bounded inside by photosphere and outside by a prescribed nonspherical source surface to which B is made (as nearly as possible) perpendicular. As usual we obtain the potential for the part of B that arises from currents inside the Sun by fitting an expansion to the observed line-of-sight component of B at the photosphere. A second least-squares fit is introduced to obtain the part of B that arises from currents outside the source surface. Comparisons are made between this model and observed coronal and interplanetary structures. There is evidence that observation data underestimate the strength of photospheric polar magnetic fields.

Theoretical investigation of the generation and injection of electromagnetic waves in space plasma by means of a long-orbiting tether

Analysis of the various mechanisms of electromagnetic wave generation by the shuttle-borne orbiting tether of the T.S.S. Facility shows that significant electrodynamic power levels are available even when overestimating the loss mechanisms expected to intervene. This electrodynamic power is in part dissipated by Joule losses in the tether, in part goes to accelerate electrons through the sheath surrounding the balloon (when in a downward deployment), and in part goes into e.m. wave generation. A preliminary estimate shows that a 100 km tether in orbit would produce ULF/ELF signals that are detectable on the ground with state-of-the-art magnetometric instrumentation.

An Introduction to Magnetospheric Physics by Means of Simple Models

The large scale structure and behavior of the Earth's magnetosphere is discussed. The model is suitable for inclusion in courses on space physics, plasmas, astrophysics or the Earth's environment, as well as for self-study. Nine quantitative problems, dealing with properties of linear superpositions of a dipole and a constant field are presented. Topics covered include: open and closed models of the magnetosphere; field line motion; the role of magnetic merging (reconnection); magnetospheric convection; and the origin of the magnetopause, polar cusps, and high latitude lobes.

Examination of silicon solar cells by means of the Scanning Laser Acoustic Microscope (SLAM)

The Scanning Laser Acoustic Microscope produces images of internal structure in materials. The acoustic microscope is an imaging system based upon acoustic rather than electromagnetic waves. Variations in the elastic propertis are primarily responsible for structure visualized in acoustic micrographs. The instrument used in these investigations is the SONOMICROSCOPE 100 which can be operated at ultrasonic frequencies of from 30 MHz to 500 MHz. The examination of the silicon solar cells was made at 100 MHz. Data are presented in the form of photomicrographs.

The Manned Space Platform as an evolutionary means to achieve a permanent manned orbital operations facility

An evolutionary approach to permanently manned on-orbit facilities is discussed, and it is noted that the Science and Applications Manned Space Platform, which is the first step in this evolution, can be based primarily on existing and currently planned hardware. It is shown how by upgrading the systems capabilities of the Spacelab modules, the platform can be reconfigured to provide a permanent manned research and operations facility. The facility can grow in size and capability to accommodate increases in user requirements, more experiment modules, and larger crews and to provide additional power and heat rejection. It is noted that the Growth-Permanently Manned Facility can be used for science activities and/or to support various operations functions such as space construction, servicing and maintaining space systems, and vehicle assembly.
