Radio stars - A possible link between the Hipparcos optical reference frame and an extra-galactic very long baseline interferometry reference frame

The concept of typing the Hipparcos optical and the JPL VLBI frames of reference by means of VLBI measurements of the positions and proper motions of the radio components of some bright stars is considered. The properties of the thermal and non-thermal radio-stars are discussed and 22 candidate stars are selected to achieve this tie. A description is given of the first VLBI attempt to detect these stars on the intercontinental baselines of the Deep Space Network with the Mark II recording system.

Radio frequency fields generated by the S-band communication link on OV102

The Space Shuttle STS-3 mission carried a Plasma Diagnostics Package (PDP) whose instrumentation included an S-band antenna and detector. The PDP was maneuvered by the Remote Manipulator System arm through a computer controlled sequence in the Orbiter's X-Z plane, above the quad and hemi S-band communications antennas. Antenna field strength measurements were conducted during transmitter high power modes, and the results were compared to ground full scale measurements and predictions. A field strength 4.8 + or - 3 dB higher than predicted is noted. This RF field is primarily due to the quad PM transmitter, whose power output of 115 W compares with 15 W for the hemi.

Ionospheric electron density irregularities observed by satellite-to-satellite, dual-frequency, low-low Doppler tracking link

A low-low, satellite-to-satellite, dual-frequency, Doppler tracking experiment was performed. The data are analyzed here for irregularities in electron density at the altitude of 212 km. The differential Doppler data with the relative motion term removed are integrated to obtain a representation of the electron density variation along the satellite path. Well-known large-scale features such as the equatorial geomagnetic anomaly and day/night ionization level differences are clearly observed in the integrated data. The larger crest of the morning geomagnetic anomaly is seen to occur in the southern (winter) hemisphere in agreement with previous observations. In addition, a sharp peak in the electron density at the day-to-night transition point is observed in two consecutive revolutions. This effect may be due to the previously postulated atmospheric shock wave generated by supersonic motion of the terminator.

An evaluation and force gradient determination of mechanically linked reversible sidestick controllers for General Aviation aircraft

In connection with the increase in air traffic, IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) flight in the air traffic control system has become very demanding. It has, therefore, become imperative to optimize the pilot's skills in his management of the various aircraft systems. The present investigation is concerned with the human factors aspects of the use of sidesticks in direct mechanical linkage (reversible) control systems in a production General Aviation (G.A.) aircraft. A total of 140 fifteen to twenty minute flight tasks were flown on the NASA Langley G.A. motion base simulator. The study involved a comparison of three locations of the sidestick, left side, center, and right side, and the standard yoke. It was found that the sidestick is preferable to the standard yoke. However, some of the design and installation features of the sidestick are critical for pilot acceptance.

Problems relevant to town incoming radio TV links

The degradations produced on the wanted TV signal by an interfering signal are examined. The TV protection ratios to be respected are also examined in case of co-channel interference and adjacent channels. Problems related to the possible disturbances produced by the interfering signal on the AGC and the squelch of the interred receiver are also taken into account. Some solutions normally adopted for the above problems are examined, including improvement of the antenna directivity, suitable filtering, and polarization discrimination. Finally, some problems related to the propagation I urban areas for what concerns the possible distortions on a color TV signal are examined.

The 60 GHz antenna system analyses for intersatellite links, phase A

A tradeoff study for 60 GHz antenna systems applicable to an advanced Tracking and Data Acquisition System is also discussed. A conceptual design of a preferred antenna system is also discussed. The tradeoff results for four types of antenna systems are presented: (1) Reflector/fixed feed, (2) Mechanical scan, (3) Electronic scan; and (4) Hybrid mechanical/electronic scan. The 12 candidate antennas were assessed on the basis of a preliminary design and a performance analysis then were scored against 15 weighted parameters. This process resulted in the ranking of the 12 candidates for the two applications, namely, for the geostationary TDAS only with a narrow field of view and for low orbit user satellites with a wide field of view.

Orbital stability of the unseen solar companion linked to periodic extinction events

Evidence from three-dimensional numerical modelling is presented that only cometary orbits with a limited range in inclination with respect to the galactic plane are formally stable for the length of time required to cause periodic extinction events. The calculations were done using Cowell's method employing a fourth-order Runge-Kutta integration scheme in an inertial reference frame in orbit about the Galaxy. Tidal perturbations in the radial direction due to the Galaxy and the Coriolis forces are included. The vertical component of the gravitational field of the galactic disk is superimposed on these forces. The results indicate that orbits for Nemesis that are inclined at more than 30 deg to the galactic plane are not allowed and suggests that the search for Nemesis should be concentrated toward the plane of the Galaxy. Perturbations by passing stars or molecular clouds may make even the low-inclination orbits unstable.

Colorless Polyimide Containing Phenoxy-Linked Diamines

Tough, optically transparent films produced. Polyimides having this molecular structure form tough, transparent films. Films made transparent by careful control of manufacturing conditions, including use of highly purified monomers. Need for high-temperature, flexible polymeric films and coating materials that have high optical transparency in 300- to 600nm range of electro-magnetic spectrum for use on antennas, solar cells, and thermalcontrol coatings.

Process for preparing essentially colorless polyimide film containing phenoxy-linked diamines

A polyimide film that is approximately 90% transparent at 500 nm, useful for thermal protective coatings and solar cells, and the processes for preparing the same by thermal and chemical conversion are disclosed. An essential feature for achieving maximum optical transparency films requires utilizing recrystallized and/or sublimated specific aromatic diamines and dianhydride monomers and introducing phenoxy or thiophenyl separator groups and isomeric m,m' or o,p'-oriented diamines into the polymer molecular structure. The incorporation of these groups in the polymer structure serves to separate the chromaphoric centers and reduce the formation of inter-chain and intra-chain charge transfer complexes which normally cause absorptions in the UV-visible range. The films may be obtained by hand, brushing, casting, or spraying a layer of polyamic acid solutions onto a surface and thermally converting the applied layer to the polyimide, or the polyamic acid solution can be chemically converted to the polyimide, subsequentially dissolved in an organic solvent, and applied as a polyimide film layer with the solvent therein thermally removed.

A possible comet and asteroid link in the formation of comets

IRAS data on particles in the asteroid belt and 'cirrus' clouds at large heliocentric distances are used as the bases for a model of ongoing comet production. It is noted that many particles in the solar system have a radiation pressure/gravitational attraction ratio of 0.5, a condition that holds true for particles in the asteroid belt. Collisionally disturbed into eccentric orbits, the particles could collect frosty grains in the outermost solar system. IRAS revealed the presence of many of these grains in the asteroid belt. It is numerically shown that the agglomeration of many subkilometer radius asteroids deflected into the outer solar system by orbital perturbations induced by Jupiter could provide a nucleating location for the outwardly-migrated grains. Techniques which could be employed to test the hypothesis are discussed.

Cometary nuclei and asteroids - Has a link been found?

Data from recent spectrophotometric observations of cometary dust are summarized and compared with similar data on asteroids. A number of systematic similarities are noted between comet materials and dark reddish-black asteroids such as the Trojans. It is suggested that Trojans and comet nuclei are members of a class of outer-solar-system planetesimals with colors due to opaque carbonaceous dust containing reddish low-temperature organic condensates.

Mars to earth optical communication link for the proposed Mars Sample Return mission roving vehicle

The Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission planed for 1989 will deploy a rover from its landing craft to survey the Martian surface. During traversals of the rover from one site to the next in search of samples, three-dimensional images from a pair of video cameras will be transmitted to earth; the terrestrial operators will then send back high level direction commands to the rover. Attention is presently given to the effects of wind and dust on communications, the architecture of the optical communications package, and the identification of technological areas requiring further development for MSR incorporation.

A possible biochemical missing link among archaebacteria

The characteristics of the newly discovered strain of archaebacteria, VC-16, the only archaebacterium known to reduce sulfate, suggest that VC-16 might represent a transitional form between an anaerobic thermophilic sulfur-based type of metabolism and methanogenesis. It is shown here, using a matrix of evolutionary distances derived from an alignment of various archaebacterial 16S rRNAs and the phylogenetic tree derived from these evolutionary distances, that the lineage represented by strain VC-16 arises from the archaebacterial tree precisely where such an interpretation would predict that it would, between the Methanococcus lineage and that of Thermococcus.

Consistent Data Distribution Over Optical Links

Fiber optics combined with IDE's provide consistent data communication between fault-tolerant computers. Data-transmission-checking system designed to provide consistent and reliable data communications for fault-tolerant and highly reliable computers. New technique performs variant of algorithm for fault-tolerant computers and uses fiber optics and independent decision elements (IDE's) to require fewer processors and fewer transmissions of messages. Enables fault-tolerant computers operating at different levels of redundancy to communicate with each other over triply redundant bus. Level of redundancy limited only by maximum number of wavelengths active on bus.

Fiber-linked telescope arrays on the ground and in space

The use of single-mode optical fibers in telescope arrays, first proposed for a set of free-flying spacecraft, is developed and applied to more modest, shorter range projects. The basic advantage remains a considerable simplification in the control system; the main limitation is spectral range. Two proposals are described: a ground-based array of small optical telescopes supported on a radio dish, and a similar space array. The control system is almost the same in both cases, hence the ground-based array can be considered a test-bench for the space device.
