The photospheric vector magnetic field of a sunspot and its vertical gradient

The results of direct comparisons of photospheric and transition region line-of-sight field observations of sunspots using the SMM UV spectrometer and polarimeter are reported. The analysis accompanying the data is concentrated on demonstrating that the sunspot concentrated magnetic field extends into the transition region. An observation of a sunspot on Oct. 23, 1980 at the S 18 E 03 location is used as an example. Maximum field strengths ranged from 2030-2240 gauss for large and small umbrae viewed and inclination of the field to the line-of-sight was determined for the photosphere and transition region. The distribution of the magnetic field over the sunspot and variation of the line-of-sight gradient are discussed, as are the magnitudes and gradients of the photospheric field across the penumbral-photospheric boundaries.

Proposal for the measuring molecular velocity vector with single-pulse coherent Raman spectroscopy

Methods for simultaneous measurements of more than one flow velocity component using coherent Raman spectroscopy are proposed. It is demonstrated that using a kilowatt broad-band probe pulse (3-30 GHz) along with a megawatt narrow-band pump pulse (approximately 100 MHz), coherent Raman signal resulting from a single laser pulse is sufficient to produce a high-resolution Raman spectrum for a velocity measurement.

Scanning wind-vector scatterometers with two pencil beams

A scanning pencil-beam scatterometer for ocean windvector determination has potential advantages over the fan-beam systems used and proposed heretofore. The pencil beam permits use of lower transmitter power, and at the same time allows concurrent use of the reflector by a radiometer to correct for atmospheric attenuation and other radiometers for other purposes. The use of dual beams based on the same scanning reflector permits four looks at each cell on the surface, thereby improving accuracy and allowing alias removal. Simulation results for a spaceborne dual-beam scanning scatterometer with a 1-watt radiated power at an orbital altitude of 900 km is described. Two novel algorithms for removing the aliases in the windvector are described, in addition to an adaptation of the conventional maximum likelihood algorithm. The new algorithms are more effective at alias removal than the conventional one. Measurement errors for the wind speed, assuming perfect alias removal, were found to be less than 10%.

Injection module thrust vector control

A three-axis controlled Injection Module propelled by a Star 48 solid rocket motor has been considered for use as a final 'kick' stage to supplement the Inertial Upper Stage in a proposed launch option for the Galileo and International Solar Polar missions. A flight control law for the Injection Module is developed. A position plus rate control law is considered, with integral, path guidance, and derived rate terms added for improved pointing accuracy and fuel efficiency. Selection of control gains is accomplished with the help of analytical limit cycle expressions and verified by computer simulation of the closed loop system. A computer simulation of the flight control system is built around a rigid spacecraft model with gyro dynamics and thruster delays included. Models for pitch/yaw/roll disturbance torques are included. Through simple gain changes the proposed flight control law is shown to accommodate the widely different mass properties of the Galileo and International Solar Polar spacecraft. Pointing accuracies of better than the desired 0.2 degrees are achieved.

Analysis of the Viking Lander 1 surface wind vector for sols 45 to 375

The Viking Lander 1 wind sensor data during the period between sols 45 and 375 were corrected. During this period, the heating element of the quadrant sensor which provided the primary signal used for determining wind direction had failed, but both hot film wind sensors were functioning normally. The wind speed and direction corrections are explained.

Trends in measurement of solar vector magnetic fields using the Zeeman effect

Trends in spectropolarimetry as applied to the problem of Zeeman effect measurement are discussed. The use of detector arrays to improve observing efficiency is obtained. Which required new polarization modulation schemes that match the time required to read detector arrays. Another significant trend is narrowband filters, to improve angular and temporal coverage, and to Fourier transform spectrometers, to improve spectral coverage and precision. Low-polarization designs and improved methods for compensating instrumental polarization were developed. A requirement for high angular resolution suggests using adaptive optical devices to subdue the effects of bad seeing. The ultimate strategy to beat the seeing is to loft the telescope above the atmosphere such as is planned with a 30-cm telescope in 1985 and a 1250-cm telescope in 1990.

Measurements of vector fields with diode array

A polarimeter was designed for high spatial and spectral resolution. It consists of a quarter-wave plate alternately operating in two positions for Stoke-V measurements and an additional quarter-wave plate for Stokes-U and -Q measurements. The spatial range covers 75 arcsec, the spectral window of about 1.8 a allows the simultaneous observations of neighboring lines. The block diagram of the data processing and acquisition system consists of five memories each one having a capacity of 10 to the 4th power 16-bit words. The total time to acquire profiles of Stokes parameters can be chosen by selecting the number of successive measurements added in the memories, each individual measurement corresponding to an integration time of 0.5 sec. Typical values range between 2 and 60 sec depending on the brightness of the structure, the amount of polarization and a compromise between desired signal-to-noise ratio and spatial resolution.

Analysis of the new polarimeter for the Marshall Space Flight Center vector magnetograph

The magnetograph was upgraded in both electronic control of the magnetograph hardware and in the polarization optics. The problems associated with the orignal polarimeter were: (1) field of view errors associated with the natural birefringence of the KD*P crystals; (2.) KD*P electrode failure due to the halfwave dc voltage required in one of the operational sequences; and (3) breakdown of the retardation properties of some KD*Ps when exposed to a zero to halfwave modulation (DC) scheme. The new polarimeter gives up the flexibility provided by two variable waveplates to adjust the retardances of the optics for a particular polarization measurement, but solves the problems associated with the original polarimeter. With the addition of the quartz quarterwave plates, a new optical alignment was developed to allow the remaining KD*P to correct for errors in the waveplates. The new optical alignment of the polarimeter is prescribed. The various sources of error, and how those errors are minimized so that the magnetograph can look at the transverse field in real time are discussed.

Vector magnetic field observations with the Haleakala polarimeter

Several enhancements were recently made to the Haleakala polarimeter. Linear array detectors provide simultaneous resolution over a 3-A wavelength range, with spectral resolution of 40 mA. Optical fibers are now used to carry the intensity-modulated light from the rotating quarter-wave plate polarimeter to the echelle spectrometer, permitting its removal from the spar to a more stable environment. These changes, together with improved quarter-wave plates, reduced systematic errors to a few parts in 10,000 for routine observations. Examples of Stokes profiles and derived magnetic field maps are presented.

A comparison of finite volume flux vector splittings for the Euler equations

A comparison is made between the computational results of the Steger-Warming (1981) and van Leer (1982) flux splitting methods, which have been applied in generalized coordinates to quasi-one-dimensional transonic flow in a nozzle and two-dimensional subsonic, transonic, and supersonic flow over airfoils. The latter splitting method leads to higher convergence rates and a sharper representation of shocks in the transition region. The second-order accurate, one-sided-difference model is extended to a third-order, upwind-biased model with only small additional computational effort.

Instrument for differential on flux vector measurements on Spacelab 2

The DIF (differential ion flux) probe used on the Spacelab-2 mission as part of the PDP (plasma diagnostic package) as well as the DIF design, operational characteristics and data reduction procedures required to obtain plasma properties are described. The basic principles, the sensor head design, and the electronics design are discussed. Plasma properties such as ion drift energy and temperature, ion flow direction, and ion flux density are explained, and in addition, calibration procedures and calibration data on detection of multiple ion streams and detection of ion streams superimposed on an isotropic plasma are analyzed. Finally, the mounting and role of the DIF probe on the PDP are briefly reviewed. Schematics of the instrument and of its control logic are included.

Twos-complement data processing form improved encoded matrix-vector processors

A new method for handling bipolar data by twos-complement representation is detailed. This technique requires fewer bits, uses simpler optical processor devices (fewer channels), and provides a higher processing rate and throughput. It is directly extendable to more complex matrix operations because of its data flow property and requires only a modest increase in the complexity of the digital support system.
