Design and performance of a 427-meter-per-second-tip-speed two-stage fan having a 2.40 pressure ratio

The aerodynamic design and the overall and blade-element performances are presented of a 427-meter-per-second-tip-speed two-stage fan designed with axially spaced blade rows to reduce noise transmitted upstream of the fan. At design speed the highest recorded adiabatic efficiency was 0.796 at a pressure of 2.30. Peak efficiency was not established at design speed because of a damper failure which terminated testing prematurely. The overall efficiencies, at 60 and 80 percent of design speed, peaked at approximately 0.83.

Thermal characteristics of the 12-gigahertz, 200-watt output stage tube for the communications technology satellite

A description of the methods used to measure component temperatures and heat-rejection rates in a simulated space environment on output stage tubes (OST's) developed for the Communications Technology Satellite is presented along with summaries of experimentally determined values. The OST's were operated over the entire anticipated operating drive range, from the dc beam (zero drive) condition to the 6-db overdrive condition. The baseplate temperature was varied from -10 to 58 C with emphasis placed on the testing done at 45 C, the normal anticipated operating temperature. The heat-rejection rate of the OST baseplate ranged from 7.6 W at the dc beam condition to 184.5 W at the 6-db overdrive condition; the heat-rejection rate of the multistage depressed collector (MDC) cover ranged from 192.2 to 155.9 W for the same conditions. The maximum OST temperature measured on the MDC cover was 227 C during a dc beam test. The minimum temperature measured, also on the MDC cover, was -67.5 C at the end of an extended simulated eclipse test period. No effects were observed on the OST thermal characteristics due to vibration testing or temperature-reversal cycle testing.

An implementable digital adaptive flight controller designed using stabilized single-stage algorithms

An explicit adaptive controller, which makes direct use of on-line parameter identification, has been developed and applied to both the linearized and nonlinear equations of motion for the F-8 aircraft. This controller is composed of an on-line weighted least squares parameter identifier, a Kalman state filter, and a real model following control law designed using single-stage performance indices. The corresponding control gains are readily adjustable in accordance with parameter changes to ensure asymptotic stability if the conditions of perfect model following are satisfied, and stability in the sense of boundedness otherwise. Simulation experiments with realistic measurement noise indicate that the controller was effective in compensating for parameter variations and capable of rapid recovery from a set of erroneous initial parameter estimates which defined a set of destabilizing gains.

Parallel-burn options for dual-fuel single-stage orbital transports

A parallel-burn version of a single-stage vehicle for transport from the earth to low-earth orbit using two fuels and rocket propulsion is considered. New engine results were incorporated in vehicle performance and design studies. The results indicate that a hydrogen-cooled gas generator cycle engine provides attractive vehicle performance and that there is little incentive for increasing the chamber pressure beyond 27 MPa.

Ramjet propulsion for single-stage-to-orbit vehicles

The concept of single stage earth-to-orbit transportation is studied with respect to existing and projected ramjet technology. Four types of ramjet are analyzed: fan ejector, fan ramjet, supersonic combustion ramjet, and fan ramjet with turbojet boosters. A fan ramjet with a removable fan, with separate rockets for the non-air-breathing flight phase, is considered superior to an ejector ramjet, for both ease of orbit insertion and payload boost capability. Vehicle design is also discussed in terms of trajectory integration and optimization, aerodynamic trim and stability, and complete mass estimation. Graphs are presented showing Mach number for air-breathing and non-air-breathing flight, specific impulse from various ramjet engines, and orbital-insertion parameters.

Low energy stage study. Volume 2: Requirements and candidate propulsion modes

A payload mission model covering 129 launches, was examined and compared against the space transportation system shuttle standard orbit inclinations and a shuttle launch site implementation schedule. Based on this examination and comparison, a set of six reference missions were defined in terms of spacecraft weight and velocity requirements to deliver the payload from a 296 km circular Shuttle standard orbit to the spacecraft's planned orbit. Payload characteristics and requirements representative of the model payloads included in the regime bounded by each of the six reference missions were determined. A set of launch cost envelopes were developed and defined based on the characteristics of existing/planned Shuttle upper stages and expendable launch systems in terms of launch cost and velocity delivered. These six reference missions were used to define the requirements for the candidate propulsion modes which were developed and screened to determine the propulsion approaches for conceptual design.

Effect of casing treatment on performance of a two-stage high-pressure-ratio fan

A two-stage fan, previously tested with a solid casing, was tested with a casing with circumferential grooves over the tips of both rotors (casing treatment). Tests were conducted at 80 and 100 percent of design speed with uniform flow. The casing treatment improved the flow range and stall margin significantly without changing the characteristics overall performance curves of total-pressure and efficiency as functions of weight flow, other than extending them to lower weight flows.

An investigation of the initiation stage of hot corrosion in Ni-base alloys

The mechanisms which lead to the destruction of a normally protective scale during the initial stages of hot corrosion of 14 nickel-base alloys contaminated with Na2SO4 and other condensed deposits were investigated. A continuous reading microbalance was used to record weight changes at temperatures between 900 C and 1000 C at 1 atmosphere pressure of slowly flowing oxygen. The reaction was initiated by raising a preheated furnace around the quartz tube in which the specimen was supported with oxygen flowing. The furnace was raised in a time period of seconds. At 900 C, the system and specimen came to thermal equilibrium in less than one minute. Oxidized specimens were studied using optical and scanning electron metallography and X-ray diffraction techniques. Transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction spectroscopy were also used to identify the structure of carbides in some of the commercial alloys.

Aerodynamic performance of 1.38-pressure-ratio, variable-pitch fan stage

The performance of a variable pitch fan stage tested over a range of blade setting angles, speeds, and flows is presented. The fan was designed for a tip speed of 289.6 m/sec and a flow of 29.6 kg/sec. The measured performance agreed reasonably well with the design point. The stall margin was only 5 percent. Static thrust values along an operating line ranged from less than 15 to over 115 percent of that at design angle as the blade setting angle was varied from 25 degrees (closed) to -8 degrees (opened). The use of casing treatment increased the stall margin to 20.6 percent but decreased efficiency by 4 percentage points.

An analysis of thermal stress and gas bending effects on vibrations of compressor rotor stages

A preliminary study conducted by Kerrebrock et al. (1976) has shown that the torsional rigidity of untwisted thin blades of a transonic compressor can be reduced significantly by transient thermal stresses. The aerodynamic loads have various effects on blade vibration. One effect is that gas bending loads may result in a bending-torsion coupling which may change the characteristics of the torsion and bending vibration of the blade. For a general study of transient-temperature distribution within a rotor stage, a finite-element heat-conduction analysis was developed. The blade and shroud are divided into annular elements. With a temperature distribution obtained from the heat-conduction analysis and a prescribed gas bending load distribution along the blade span, the static deformation and moment distributions of the blade can be solved iteratively using the finite-element method. The reduction of the torsional rigidity of pretwisted blades caused by the thermal stress effect is then computed. The dynamic behavior of the blade is studied by a modified Galerkin's method.

Investigation of a staged plasma-focus apparatus

A new staged plasma-focus geometry combining two Mather-type plasma-focus guns was constructed, and the current-sheet dynamics were investigated. The production of simultaneous pairs of plasma foci was achieved. The intensities of X-ray and fusion-neutron emission were measured and found to agree with the scaling law for a plasma focus. Advantages of this new geometry include the possibility of using plasma-focus type pinches in multiple arrays at power levels beyond the validity regime of the current scaling law for a single gun.

Planetary mission requirements, technology and design considerations for a solar electric propulsion stage

High energy planetary missions such as comet rendezvous, Saturn orbiter and asteroid rendezvous require development of a Solar Electric Propulsion Stage (SEPS) for augmentation of the Shuttle-IUS. Performance and functional requirements placed on the SEPS are presented. These requirements will be used in evolution of the SEPS design, which must be highly interactive with both the spacecraft and the mission design. Previous design studies have identified critical SEPS technology areas and some specific design solutions which are also presented in the paper.

Modeling of switching regulator power stages with and without zero-inductor-current dwell time

State-space techniques are employed to derive accurate models for the three basic switching converter power stages: buck, boost, and buck/boost operating with and without zero-inductor-current dwell time. A generalized procedure is developed which treats the continuous-inductor-current mode without dwell time as a special case of the discontinuous-current mode when the dwell time vanishes. Abrupt changes of system behavior, including a reduction of the system order when the dwell time appears, are shown both analytically and experimentally. Merits resulting from the present modeling technique in comparison with existing modeling techniques are illustrated.
