A computational modeling framework for pre-clinical evaluation of cardiac mapping systems

There are a variety of difficulties in evaluating clinical cardiac mapping systems, most notably the inability to record the transmembrane potential throughout the entire heart during patient procedures which prevents the comparison to a relevant “gold standard”. Cardiac mapping systems are comprised of hardware and software elements including sophisticated mathematical algorithms, both of which continue to undergo rapid innovation. The purpose of this study is to develop a computational modeling framework to evaluate the performance of cardiac mapping systems. The framework enables rigorous evaluation of a mapping system’s ability to localize and characterize (i.e., focal or reentrant) arrhythmogenic sources in the heart. The main component of our tool is a library of computer simulations of various dynamic patterns throughout the entire heart in which the type and location of the arrhythmogenic sources are known. Our framework allows for performance evaluation for various electrode configurations, heart geometries, arrhythmias, and electrogram noise levels and involves blind comparison of mapping systems against a “silver standard” comprised of computer simulations in which the precise transmembrane potential patterns throughout the heart are known. A feasibility study was performed using simulations of patterns in the human left atria and three hypothetical virtual catheter electrode arrays. Activation times (AcT) and patterns (AcP) were computed for three virtual electrode arrays: two basket arrays with good and poor contact and one high-resolution grid with uniform spacing. The average root mean squared difference of AcTs of electrograms and those of the nearest endocardial action potential was less than 1 ms and therefore appears to be a poor performance metric. In an effort to standardize performance evaluation of mapping systems a novel performance metric is introduced based on the number of AcPs identified correctly and those considered spurious as well as misclassifications of arrhythmia type; spatial and temporal localization accuracy of correctly identified patterns was also quantified. This approach provides a rigorous quantitative analysis of cardiac mapping system performance. Proof of concept of this computational evaluation framework suggests that it could help safeguard that mapping systems perform as expected as well as provide estimates of system accuracy.

Machine Learning-Enabled Wearable Piezoelectric Acoustic Sensor for Real-Time Breast Abnormality Detection

In contemporary society, breast health has become a significant public health concern, particularly among women. According to statistics from the World Health Organization, both the incidence and mortality rates of breast tumors have steadily increased in recent years. Therefore, effective early-stage screening and postoperative monitoring are essential for maintaining breast health. However, conventional clinical diagnostic modalities are typically bulky, operationally complex, and unsuitable for continuous real-time monitoring, which limits their use in portable and everyday health management applications. To address these limitations, this study proposes a machine learning-integrated wearable piezoelectric sensing platform as an auxiliary tool for breast health assessment. The device consists of a PDMS matching layer embedded with flexible silver nanowires, a P(VDF-TrFE) piezoelectric layer, and a multi-channel low-noise signal acquisition circuit. It is capable of acquiring acoustic echo signals from tissue-mimicking environments and automatically evaluating signal validity using a convolutional neural network (CNN). By integrating piezoelectric sensing with deep learning-based signal analysis, the proposed system achieves a signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 70 dB and a real-time classification accuracy above 96% under controlled conditions. These results demonstrate that the platform provides a compact, portable, and intelligent approach for wearable sensing of mechanical heterogeneity and highlight its potential for future development in continuous biomedical monitoring technologies.

Linear and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Iridium Nanoparticles Grown via Atomic Layer Deposition

Nonlinear optical phenomena enable novel photonic and optoelectronic applications. Especially, metallic nanoparticles and thin films with nonlinear optical properties offer the potential for micro-optical system integration. For this purpose, new nonlinear materials need to be continuously identified, investigated, and utilized for nonlinear optical applications. While noble-metal nanoparticles, nanostructures, and thin films of silver and gold have been widely studied, iridium (Ir) nanoparticles and ultrathin films have not been investigated for nonlinear optical applications yet. Here, we present a combined theoretical and experimental study on the linear and nonlinear optical properties of iridium nanoparticles deposited via atomic layer deposition (ALD). Linear optical constants, such as the effective refractive index and extinction coefficient, were evaluated at different growth stages of nanoparticle formation. Both linear and nonlinear optical properties of these Ir ALD coatings were calculated theoretically using the Maxwell Garnett theory. The third-order susceptibility of iridium nanoparticle samples was experimentally investigated using the z-scan technique. According to the experiment, for an Ir ALD coating with 45 cycles resulting in iridium nanoparticles, the experimentally determined nonlinear third-order susceptibility is about χ Ir (3) = (2.4 – i2.1) × 10 –17 m 2 /V 2 at the fundamental wavelength of 700 nm. The theory fitted to the experimental results predicts a 5 × 10 6 -fold increase around 230 nm. This strong increase is due to the proximity to the Mie resonance of iridium nanoparticles.

Towards Automated and High-Throughput Quantitative Sizing and Isotopic Analysis of Nanoparticles via Single Particle-ICP-TOF-MS

The work described herein assesses the ability to characterize gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) of 50 and 100 nm, as well as 60 nm silver shelled gold core nanospheres (Au/Ag NPs), for their mass, respective size, and isotopic composition in an automated and unattended fashion. Here, an innovative autosampler was employed to mix and transport the blanks, standards, and samples into a high-efficiency single particle (SP) introduction system for subsequent analysis by inductively coupled plasma–time of flight–mass spectrometry (ICP-TOF-MS). Optimized NP transport efficiency into the ICP-TOF-MS was determined to be >80%. This combination, SP-ICP-TOF-MS, allowed for high-throughput sample analysis. Specifically, 50 total samples (including blanks/standards) were analyzed over 8 h, to provide an accurate characterization of the NPs. This methodology was implemented over the course of 5 days to assess its long-term reproducibility. Impressively, the in-run and day-to-day variation of sample transport is assessed to be 3.54 and 9.52% relative standard deviation (%RSD), respectively. The determination of Au NP size and concentration was of <5% relative difference from the certified values over these time periods. Isotopic characterization of the 107 Ag/ 109 Ag particles (n = 132,630) over the course of the measurements was determined to be 1.0788 ± 0.0030 with high accuracy (0.23% relative difference) when compared to the multi-collector–ICP-MS determination.

Tunable Work Functions in Plasmonic Metals

We have studied the effect of BITh molecules on the work functions of Ag and Au, with and without quartz lamp illumination. Silver and gold films coated with BITh molecules were fabricated and studied in reflection and Kelvin Probe experiments. The deposition of BITh films on Ag and Au reduced their work functions (in agreement with our recent study, wherein a similar reduction was caused by the deposition of a PMMA polymer). Illumination of the BITh-coated samples with a quartz lamp caused reductions in work functions by several tens of meV, which (almost) returned to their original values when the light was turned off. The characteristic time of this process (~15 min) was much shorter than that of photopolymerization (~180 min), suggesting that these two phenomena are nearly independent of each other. The effects of the Au substrates were qualitatively similar to those of the Ag substrates. Our findings pave the way to fundamental studies and applications of light–matter interactions.

Co-Exposure of Nanopolystyrene and Other Environmental Contaminants—Their Toxic Effects on the Survival and Reproduction of Enchytraeus crypticus

Plastics in all shapes and sizes have become widespread across ecosystems due to intense anthropogenic use. As such, they can interact with other contaminants that accumulate in the terrestrial environment, such as pharmaceuticals, metals or nanomaterials (NMs). These interactions can potentiate combined toxic effects in the exposed soil organisms, with hazardous long-term consequences to the full ecosystem. In the present study, a terrestrial model species, Enchytraeus crypticus (oligochaeta), was exposed through contaminated soil with nanopolystyrene (representative of nanoplastics (NPls)), alone and in combination with diphenhydramine (DPH, representative of pharmaceuticals), silver nitrate (AgNO3, representative of metals) and vanadium nanoparticles (VNPs, representative of NMs). AgNO3 and VNPs decreased E. crypticus reproduction at 50 mg/kg, regardless of the presence of NPls. Moreover, at the same concentration, both single and combined VNP exposures decreased the E. crypticus survival. On the other hand, DPH and NPls individually caused no effect on organisms’ survival and reproduction. However, the combination of DPH (10 and 50 mg/kg) with 300 mg NPls/kg induced a decrease in reproduction, showing a relevant interaction between the two contaminants (synergism). Our findings indicate that the NPls can play a role as vectors for other contaminants and can potentiate the effects of pharmaceuticals, such as DPH, even at low and sub-lethal concentrations, highlighting the negative impact of mixtures of contaminants (including NPls) on soil systems.

Neutrino-driven Outflows and the Elemental Abundance Patterns of Very Metal-poor Stars

Abstract The elemental abundances between strontium and silver ( Z = 38–47) observed in the atmospheres of very metal-poor stars in the Galaxy may contain the fingerprint of the weak r -process and ν p -process occurring in early core-collapse supernovae explosions. In this work, we combine various astrophysical conditions based on a steady-state model to cover the richness of the supernova ejecta in terms of entropy, expansion timescale, and electron fraction. The calculated abundances based on different combinations of conditions are compared with stellar observations, with the aim of constraining supernova ejecta conditions. We find that some conditions of the neutrino-driven outflows consistently reproduce the observed abundances of our sample. In addition, from the successful combinations, the neutron-rich trajectories better reproduce the observed abundances of Sr–Zr ( Z = 38–40), while the proton-rich ones, Mo–Pd ( Z = 42–47).

Investigation of Contact Properties and Device Performance for Bifacial Double-Side Textured Silicon Solar Cells With Polysilicon Based Passivating Contacts

We investigate the impact of the surface morphology on the contact properties of phosphorus doped poly-Si layers. If the poly-Si layer on a textured surface remains intact after high-temperature metallization using a fire-through (FT) silver (Ag) paste, the J0,metal is not expected to increase significantly while the specific contact resistivity can improve with a textured surface. The contact properties of the FT Ag contacts to n+ poly-Si deposited on both textured and planar surfaces are investigated by measuring and evaluating ρc and J0,metal. The reasons for differences in contact resistance and recombination are further investigated with SEM imaging. Solar cells with n-type polysilicon based passivating contacts on the rear side are fabricated and characterized. The scientific approach used, and the insights presented in this work, help to understand the mechanisms and behavior of screen-printed and fired-through contacts to polysilicon layers deposited onto textured silicon surfaces.

“Green” Fabrication of High-performance Transparent Conducting Electrodes by Blade Coating and Photonic Curing on PET for Perovskite Solar Cells

This study presents an innovative material processing approach to fabricate transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates using blade coating and photonic curing. The hybrid TCEs consist of a multiscale Ag network, combining silver metal bus lines and nanowires, overcoated by an indium zinc oxide layer, and then photonically cured. Blade coating ensures film uniformity and thickness control over large areas. Photonic curing, a non-thermal processing method with significantly lower carbon emissions, enhances the conductivity and transparency of the coated layers. Our hybrid TCEs achieve an average transmittance of (81 ± 0.4)% referenced to air ((90 ± 0.4)% referenced to the PET substrate) in the visible range, an average sheet resistance of (11 ± 0.5) Ω sq−1, and an average surface roughness of (4.3 ± 0.4) nm. We benchmark these values against commercial PET/TCE substrates. Mechanical durability tests demonstrate <3% change in resistance after 2000 bending cycles at a 1 in radius. The scalable potential of the hybrid TCE fabrication method is demonstrated by high uniformity and excellent properties in 7 in × 8 in large-area samples and by performing the photonic curing process at 11 m min−1. Furthermore, halide perovskite solar cells fabricated on these hybrid TCEs achieve average and champion power conversion efficiencies of (10.5 ± 1.0) % and 12.2%, respectively, and significantly outperform devices made on commercial PET/TCEs. This work showcases our approach as a viable pathway for high-speed “green” manufacturing of high-performance TCEs on PET substrates for flexible optoelectronic devices.

Activation of propane on Ag–PdO(101) model surfaces

Oxidation of alkanes remains a central challenge in catalysis due to the high activation barriers of C–H bonds and the thermodynamic favorability of complete oxidation. Palladium oxide (PdO), particularly its (101) facet, is known for its high reactivity in alkane oxidation, which is attributed to its coordinatively unsaturated palladium (Pd) and O atoms. In this study, we investigate the effect of silver (Ag) incorporation on the oxidation behavior of propane over PdO(101) using temperature-programmed reaction spectroscopy (TPRS) under controlled conditions. While pristine PdO(101) exhibits complete oxidation of propane with CO₂ and H₂O desorption at high temperatures (approximately 475 K), Ag incorporation induces a new CO₂ desorption peak at significantly lower temperatures (approximately 330 K). This shift is attributed to the formation of new active sites at the Ag–PdO(101) interface. Quantitative analysis reveals that low-temperature activity correlates with Ag coverage, while overall CO₂ production decreases, suggesting a redistribution of reactivity rather than an increase in active surface area. Activation energy estimations using the Redhead method confirm that C–H bond activation becomes more facile at the interface, with a 46 kJ/mol reduction compared to pristine PdO(101). These findings demonstrate that incorporating a less reactive metal such as Ag into PdO surfaces not only modifies the reaction energetics but also enables the design of bimetallic catalysts with improved selectivity for partial oxidation reactions.

Deep Green Unannotated Protein Structures

The Deep Green list is based on the identification and curation of conserved unannotated proteins in three green lineage (Viridiplantae) model organisms; Arabidopsis thaliana, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, and Setaria viridis. Preliminary characterization of Deep Green proteins and genes was done using various informatics tools and published data sets and is presented in Knoshaug, Sun, et al., 2023, submitted. The structures of these unannotated proteins were also predicted using AlphaFold (Jumper et al., 2021). The data deposited here are the AlphaFold structural predictions having the highest pLDDT score and thus identified as the best folded structure (ranked_0). These data enable others to do in-depth structural characterizations to aid in functional characterization leading to deeper understanding of plant biology.
