Bayesian Estimation of Oscillator Parameters: Toward Anomaly Detection and Cyber-Physical System Security

Cyber-physical system security presents unique challenges to conventional measurement science and technology. Anomaly detection in software-assisted physical systems, such as those employed in additive manufacturing or in DNA synthesis, is often hampered by the limited available parameter space of the underlying mechanism that is transducing the anomaly. As a result, the formulation of anomaly detection for such systems often leads to inverse or ill-posed problems, requiring statistical treatments. Here, we present Bayesian inference of unknown parameters associated with a generic actuator considered as a representative vital element of a cyber-physical system. Via a series of experimental input-output measurements, a transfer function for the actuator is obtained numerically, which serves as our model for the proposed method. Linear, nonlinear, and delayed dynamics may be assumed for the actuator response. By devising a code-based malicious signal, we study the efficacy of Bayesian inference for its potential to produce a detection, including uncertainty quantification, with a remarkably small number of input data points. Our approach should be adaptable to a variety of real-time cyber-physical anomaly detection scenarios.

Polar orbiting operational weather satellites.

The progress in the development of operational weather satellites is reviewed, covering their chronology from Explorer 7 of 1959 through Meteor 12 of June, 1972. Special attention is given to the development of the TIROS series satellites with the evolution of their operational sensors, data systems and performance requirements. The topics also include the data collection system designs, to Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), the sounder radiometer, the Solar Environment Monitor (SEM), the data processor, and TIROS-N operation and orbital characteristics. It is expected that TIROS-N and its forthcoming advanced versions will provide an effective technology for sensing environmental data on a global scale in the latter half of the decade.

Advanced figure sensor operations and maintenance manual

This manual contains procedures for installing, operating, and maintaining the optical figure sensor and its associated electronic controls. The optical figure sensor, a system of integrated components, comprises: (1) a phase measuring modified interferometer employing a single frequency 6328 A laser, and a Vidissector; (2) a two-axis automatic thermal compensation control mount; (3) a five degree of freedom manual adjustment stand; and (4) a control console. This instrument provides real time output data of optical figure errors for spherical mirrors, and is also capable of measuring aspherical mirrors if a null corrector is added.

Gravitational-wave astronomy.

Discussion of the nature and origin of gravitational waves in the light of current theories and data, stating the concept of gravitational waves as a field of relative gravitational forces that propagate with the speed of light. The topics include the generation of gravitational waves, their astrophysical sources, pulsars, supernovae, the birth of neutron stars, explosions in quasars and nuclei of galaxies, and atomic and molecular processes. Also considered are gravitational wave reception techniques, covering free-mass antennas, nonmechanical displacement sensors, almost free antennas, mechanical displacement sensors, acoustic systems, resonant antennas, Weber's detectors, and natural antennas. Future developments in gravitational wave astronomy are considered.

An operational earth resources satellite system: The LANDSAT follow-on program

The LANDSATS 1 and 2 have demonstrated the role of remote sensing from satellite in research, development, and operational activities essential to the better management of our resources. Hundreds of agricultural, geological, hydrological, urban land use, and other investigations have raised the question of the development of an operational system providing continuous, timely data. The LANDSAT Follow-on Study addressed the economics, technological performance, and design of a system in transition from R and D to operations. Economic benefits were identified; and a complete system from sensors to the ultilization in forecasting crop production, oil and mineral exploration, and water resources management was designed.

Issues in advanced automation for manipulator control

This paper provides a brief description and analysis of the main issues in advanced autonomous control of manipulators as seen from a system point of view. The nature of manipulation is analyzed at some depth. A general multilevel structure is outlined for manipulator control organization which includes the human operator at the top level of the control structure. Different approaches to the development of advanced automation of mechanical arms are summarized. Recent work in the JPL teleoperator project is described, including control system, force/torque sensor, and control software development. Some results from control experiments are summarized.

Reliability measurement during software development

During the development of data base software for a multi-sensor tracking system, reliability was measured. The failure ratio and failure rate were found to be consistent measures. Trend lines were established from these measurements that provided good visualization of the progress on the job as a whole as well as on individual modules. Over one-half of the observed failures were due to factors associated with the individual run submission rather than with the code proper. Possible application of these findings for line management, project managers, functional management, and regulatory agencies is discussed. Steps for simplifying the measurement process and for use of these data in predicting operational software reliability are outlined.

Sensing the earth's environment from space: User needs and technology opportunities

The specific measurements and data needs of users of remotely sensed environmental data were identified in a number of studies supported by NASA in cooperation with industry, universities, and the operational government agencies involved. The present capabilities of space and aircraft sensors, data systems, and satellite support systems were assessed and compared with the trends in the supporting technology. Areas of high benefit in which there is a large gap between the efforts underway and the need are identified. The problems in narrowing these gaps are briefly discussed.

Rebirth of remote sensing: Do we know enough for our own good?

Obstacles or deficiencies in on-going satellites that impede operational use of data are described. Because spectral and spatial characteristics of LANDSAT D sensors are different from earlier satellites, they deter operational planning and data use, and an operational program operated in parallel with experimental technology development is needed. Particular attention is given to the satellite sensor readout system, its current applications, and needs for the future.
