Site-specific surface reactivity on MgO for atomic layer deposition via selective hydration

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a powerful technique for thin film synthesis, offering atomic-scale precision and conformality. While ALD of MgO has been widely studied for applications in energy storage and microelectronics, its potential as surface on which deposition may be selective and defects repaired remains underexplored. Here, we present a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of MgO surface hydration and its implications for targeted ALD growth using water and dimethyl aluminum isopropoxide (DMAI) as reactants. We perform density functional theory (DFT) calculations to examine molecular and dissociative H 2 O adsorption on MgO (100) terraces and step-edge sites, including pristine surfaces and those with Mg/O vacancies. Reaction Gibbs free energies are calculated under various conditions to quantify surface reactivity. Our findings reveal facet- and defect-dependent hydration behaviors that align with experimental ALD growth trends on MgO (100). This study provides a molecular-level understanding of MgO surface chemistry critical for optimizing ALD processes for thin film growth and defect repair.

Kinetic and structural evidence for specific DMSO interference with reversible binding of uncharged bis-oximes to hAChE and their reactivation kinetics of OP-hAChE

The structural basis of inhibitory effect of organic solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on human acetylcholinesterase (EC 3.1.1.7; hAChE) was inferred from the effect of DMSO on kinetics of reversible inhibition of uncharged, heterocyclic bis-oximes to hAChE, from DMSO effect on rates of reactivation of inactive organophosphate (OP)-hAChE conjugates by bis-oximes and by X-ray structures of bis-oxime and DMSO binding to hAChE. Here, the reversible inhibition constant of DMSO for hAChE in 0.1 M phosphate buffer pH 7.4 at 22 °C, was K i = (0.32 ± 0.04) % (or 45 ± 5 mM). The K i of the bis-oxime LG-703 for hAChE was 3.2-fold larger in 1 % DMSO, consistent with direct competition between LG-703 and DMSO. The X-ray structure of the LG-703∗hAChE complex (PDB ID: 6U3P) shows DMSO and LG-703 bound to individual hAChE monomers, LG-703 in the chain A and DMSO in the chain B. In the co-crystallization both small molecules were present at a similar excess over their corresponding K i values for hAChE (7.8-fold for DMSO and 6.5-fold for LG-703) and formation of two different complexes (DMSO∗hAChE and LG-703∗hAChE), in the same crystal, appears consistent with inhibition kinetics. Furthermore, rates of reactivation of paraoxon-inhibited hAChE (POX-hAChE) and of VX-hAChE by LG-703 and by a novel heterocyclic bis-oxime LG-1922 were reduced 2 – 3-fold in DMSO, consistent with observation of the active-center-bound DMSO molecules in the newly solved structure of the LG-1922∗POX-hAChE complex presented here and in our POX-hAChE structure (PDB ID: 8DT2) showing obstruction of the reactivator access to the conjugated P atom.

Specific molecular design of polycarboxylate polymers exhibiting optimal compatibility with clay contaminants in concrete

Highlights: • Allyl ether-based PCEs with short side chain length and low side chain density presented superior clay resistance. • PCEs with medium side chain density exhibited best clay robustness when compared at the absolute dosed quantities. • The proportion of PCE being intercalated into the layered structure of clay was quantified. It is widely recognized that the dispersing ability of polycarboxylate superplasticizers (PCEs) could be hindered due to the presence of clay contaminants in concrete. In this study, a series of allyl ether-based polycarboxylate superplasticizers possessing short polyethylene glycol side chains was successfully synthesized and probed for their clay tolerance. The resulting PCE polymers were characterized via Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) to obtain their molecular properties. Thereafter, their dispersing ability was probed in the absence and presence of sodium bentonite. Allyl ether-based polycarboxylate (APEG) polymers possessing short side chains were found to exhibit enhanced clay resistance as compared to that of conventional MPEG PCEs holding long pendant chains. The mode of interaction between APEG PCEs and bentonite was investigated via sorption and XRD measurements. The data revealed that APEG PCEs possessing a lower side chain density intercalate less into the interlayer space of bentonite than those exhibiting higher side chain density.

Mineral-specific heterogeneous neptunium sorption onto geological repository rocks in oxic and anoxic conditions and various temperatures

Neptunium poses challenges for radioactive wastes management due to its long half-life and ingrowth from americium decay, as well as its high mobility in water in its oxidized forms. Np(V)-bearing aqueous solutions were contacted with polished and crushed gneiss and dolerite from the Yeniseisky site, Russia, which is under consideration as a location for an underground repository, both in oxic and anoxic conditions at 20 and 90 °C. Neptunium sorption on crushed gneiss and dolerite in oxic conditions at 20 °C was quite low, but increased substantially in anoxic conditions. Autoradiography on samples treated at 20 °C revealed that sorbed Np was associated mostly with dark colored iron-bearing minerals, and solvent extraction indicated partial reduction of Np(V) to Np(IV). Sorption of Np from aqueous solutions contacted with dolerite and gneiss at 90 °C was in all cases higher than at the lower temperature. Autoradiography of polished rock samples treated in anoxic conditions at 90 °C revealed that Fe-bearing minerals had 3–4 orders of magnitude more Np sorbed on them than the quartz and feldspar grains. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated this sorbed Np was present as NpO 2 . This study supports the concept that the geologic conditions present at the planned repository site will retard Np migration.
