Nuclear spin coherence and RKKY interaction in superconducting Nb 3 Sn

We have investigated the normal and superconducting states of the technologically important compound Nb$_3$Sn using $^{93}$Nb nuclear magnetic resonance. From spin-lattice relaxation we find strong suppression of the zero-temperature superconducting order parameter by magnetic field. Additionally we have identified an anomalously large electron-nuclear exchange interaction from spin-spin relaxation measurements, an order of magnitude beyond that of the nuclear dipolar coupling. This RKKY interaction evolves from normal to superconducting states, becoming essentially Lorentzian in the low temperature limit.

Probing coherent electronic superpositions of singly and doubly excited states of krypton with extreme-ultraviolet four-wave-mixing spectroscopy

Radiative nonlinear four-wave mixing can monitor the evolution of electronic wave packets, providing access to lifetimes and quantifying the light-induced couplings between excited states. In this article, we report the observation of quantum beats in an autoionizing electronic wave packet in krypton, probed using this technique. Analysis of the signal reveals that these beats originate from the contribution of previously unassigned, doubly excited states interacting with singly excited ones. We introduce a minimal theoretical model, based on multichannel quantum-defect theory, which quantitatively reproduces both the wave-packet dynamics and the static spectrum. This work combines a versatile, noncommensurate XUV-IR-based experimental scheme with a tractable model, establishing a powerful approach for the metrology and control of complex, correlated electronic states.

Modified coherence and the transverse extent of jets

We present a study of the transverse size of parton showers and their diminishing interaction with the medium in the high virtuality stage of jet evolution. We consider the process of a hard quark produced in deep inelastic scattering off a large nucleus. Single gluon radiation from this quark, in the absence of scattering, is rederived using wave packets. This allows for a derivation of the quantum uncertainty size of the hard quark, at the point of splitting. This uncertainty size is then incorporated within a Monte Carlo shower routine yielding transverse shower sizes noticeably larger than the classical antenna size of the shower. No clear relation is found between the full uncertainty size of the shower and the virtuality of the originating parton. The single gluon emission from the hard quark is then reanalyzed for the case of single rescattering off the remainder of the nucleus. A relation is derived between the jet transport coefficient $\hat{𝑞}$ and the gluon Transverse momentum-dependent parton distribution function (gTMDPDF). Solving this relation, for a simple case, clearly demonstrates the weakening of $\hat{𝑞}$ with the virtuality of the hard splitting parton.

Coherence-Induced Deep Thermalization Transition in Random Permutation Quantum Dynamics

We report a phase transition in the projected ensemble—the collection of postmeasurement wave functions of a local subsystem obtained by measuring its complement. The transition emerges in systems undergoing random permutation dynamics, a type of quantum time evolution wherein computational basis states are shuffled without creating superpositions. It separates a phase exhibiting deep thermalization, where the projected ensemble is distributed over Hilbert space in a maximally entropic fashion (Haar random), from a phase where it is minimally entropic (“classical bit-string ensemble”). Crucially, this deep thermalization transition is invisible to the subsystem’s density matrix, which always exhibits thermalization to infinite temperature across the phase diagram. Through a combination of analytical arguments and numerical simulations, we show that the transition is tuned by the total amount of injected by the input state and the measurement basis, and is exhibited robustly across different microscopic models. Our findings represent a novel form of ergodicity-breaking universality in quantum many-body dynamics, characterized not by a failure of regular thermalization, but rather by a failure of deep thermalization.

Dark and bright modes, and their coherent control in dipolar metasurface bilayers

Several plasmonic nanoparticles supporting dipolar resonances can couple to form normal modes. Here, we develop an analytical model to explain the formation of nonradiative “dark” and radiative “bright” modes through radiative coupling in bilayers consisting of dipolar nanoantenna arrays that are separated by a subwavelength distance. We also include near-field contributions in our model and show that the absorption and reflectance spectra obtained from our model agree reasonably well with the respective finite-difference time-domain simulation results for both perfectly aligned and misaligned bilayers. Here, the ability to vary the reflection and absorption spectra of these bilayers by changing the material and geometrical parameters has potential applications in the design of efficient spectral filters. We also show that we can selectively excite these modes by adjusting the phase between two counterpropagating normally incident fields, which has applications in all-optical modulators and switches based on purely linear interferometric effects.
