User's instructions for the cardiovascular Walters model

The model is a combined, steady-state cardiovascular and thermal model. It was originally developed for interactive use, but was converted to batch mode simulation for the Sigma 3 computer. The model has the purpose to compute steady-state circulatory and thermal variables in response to exercise work loads and environmental factors. During a computer simulation run, several selected variables are printed at each time step. End conditions are also printed at the completion of the run.

Modifications to the steady-state 41-node thermoregulatory model including validation of the respiratory and diffusional water loss equations

After the simplified version of the 41-Node Stolwijk Metabolic Man Model was implemented on the Sigma 3 and UNIVAC 1110 computers in batch mode, it became desirable to make certain revisions. First, the availability of time-sharing terminals makes it possible to provide the capability and flexibility of conversational interaction between user and model. Secondly, recent physiological studies show the need to revise certain parameter values contained in the model. Thirdly, it was desired to make quantitative and accurate predictions of evaporative water loss for humans in an orbiting space station. The result of the first phase of this effort are reported.

Shoe-box orbit determination system for SMM preliminary results

The implementation of both sequential and batch methods of estimation on IMP-16 microprocessors was investigated. Simulated data was used from a tracking and data relay satellite whose target satellite was the Solar Maximum Mission. An interesting feature of the hardware was the use of two interconnected IMP-16's. Some preliminary results from the study, as well as the difficulties and advantages in the use of microprocessors, are presented.

Compatibility of elastomers in alternate jet fuels

The compatibility of elastomeric compositions of known resistance to aircraft fuels was tested for potential use in Jet A type fuels obtainable from alternate sources, such as coal. Since such fuels were not available at the time, synthetic alternate fuels were prepared by adding tetralin to a petroleum based Jet A type fuel to simulate coal derived fuels which are expected to contain higher amounts of aromatic and hydroaromatic hydrocarbons. The elastomeric compounds tested were based on butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber, a castable Thiokol polysulfide rubber, and a castable fluorosilicone rubber. Batches of various cross-link densities of these rubbers were made and their chemical stress relaxation behavior in fuel, air, and nitrogen, their swelling properties, and response to mechanical testing were determined.

ATLAS, an integrated structural analysis and design system. Volume 3: User's manual, input and execution data

The input data and execution control statements for the ATLAS integrated structural analysis and design system are described. It is operational on the Control Data Corporation (CDC) 6600/CYBER computers in a batch mode or in a time-shared mode via interactive graphic or text terminals. ATLAS is a modular system of computer codes with common executive and data base management components. The system provides an extensive set of general-purpose technical programs with analytical capabilities including stiffness, stress, loads, mass, substructuring, strength design, unsteady aerodynamics, vibration, and flutter analyses. The sequence and mode of execution of selected program modules are controlled via a common user-oriented language.

AOIPS - An interactive image processing system

The Atmospheric and Oceanographic Information Processing System (AOIPS) was developed to help applications investigators perform required interactive image data analysis rapidly and to eliminate the inefficiencies and problems associated with batch operation. This paper describes the configuration and processing capabilities of AOIPS and presents unique subsystems for displaying, analyzing, storing, and manipulating digital image data. Applications of AOIPS to research investigations in meteorology and earth resources are featured.

Causes of compositional variations within mare basalt suites

The short-range unmixing model, which explains compositional variations produced during crystallization of a single undifferentiated basalt flow, has been applied to the variations found within each of the suites of mare basalts. Based on this modelling, the following suites of mare basalts could represent random samples from single, undifferentiated lava flows: Apollo 11 A (high K), Apollo 15 olivine, Apollo 17 A-U, Apollo 17 B, Apollo 17 C. The short range unmixing model fails to account for variations within the Apollo 12 olivine-pigeonite group and Apollo 12 ilmenite group, which are well explained by fractional crystallization. The fact that the compositional variations within a suite of samples of unknown affinity can be explained in terms of short-range unmixing of a single lava does not mean that they are necessarily related in that way. It does, however, mean that independent evidence (stratigraphic, petrographic, isotropic, or age) is required to support arguments for the variations being caused by fraction crystallization or different magma batches.

Transverse vorticity measurements

A technique, involving programmed digital calculations, is proposed for evaluating transverse vorticity in typical laboratory shear flows from an array of four hot-wire probes. The computing scheme successfully recovers the velocity vector information from a wide range of velocity magnitudes and a wide range of pitch angles. It is readily implemented in a batch process mode on a digital computer.

Orbit/attitude estimation with Landsat-1 and -2 landmark data

The accuracy of spacecraft orbit and attitude determination is investigated using Landsat-1 and -2 picture data. The data consists of ground control points, of known geodetic coordinates, which are identified on a series of Landsat pictures. Both sequential (extended Kalman filter) and batch (nonlinear Bayesian weighted least-squares) estimation techniques have been implemented in two software systems. Discussion of these systems includes a system overview, mathematical formulation, and sample numerical results. Particular emphasis is given to the application of a spectral analysis technique to derive spacecraft attitude models.

Sequential triangulation of orbital photography

The feasibility of structuring the satellite photogrammetric triangulation as an iterative Extended Kalman estimation algorithm is demonstrated. Comparative numerical results of the sequential against batch estimation algorithm are presented. Difficulty of accurately modeling of the attitude motion is overcome by utilizing the on-board angular rate measurements. Solutions of the differential equations and the evaluation of state transition matrix are carried out numerically.

Space Shuttle data acquisition and processing

The techniques of minimizing the amount of Space Shuttle data processed by using real-time ground data and on board computer to prescreen the data are presented. With the advent of long duration space flight and the large amounts of data generated, it became necessary to limit the amount of data to be processed and also to present data in a manner that highlights the most important data. The Shuttle operational data system with output of 128 kilobits/sec, the developmental flight instrumentation system, and screening of data by the analysts, flight crew, or onboard computers is described, noting that by using these monitoring methods the mission evaluation team can rapidly determine time periods for which postflight data processing is required. Postflight processing systems, batch system output products, data compression techniques, the interactive computer system, and the special telemetry conversion system are discussed, and it is concluded that the combination of Shuttle on board and ground data processing systems enhances the ability to perform a functional evaluation of the Space Shuttle vehicle.
