The design and testing of a memory metal actuated boom release mechanism

A boom latch and release mechanism was designed, manufactured and tested, based on a specification for the ISEE-B satellite mechanism. From experimental results obtained, it is possible to calculate the energy available and the operating torques which can be achieved from a torsional shape memory element in terms of the reversible strain induced by prior working. Some guidelines to be followed when designing mechanisms actuated by shape memory elements are included.

Scanning and focusing mechanisms of METEOSAT radiometer

Two mechanisms, both of screw-jack type are described. The scanning mechanism, an oil lubricated and sealed unit drives and accurately positions the telescope of the METEOSAT radiometer. The dry lubricated focusing mechanism is used to adjust the focus of this telescope. The METEOSAT program is nearly completed, and the first flight model will be launched at the end of the year.

An application of interactive computer graphics technology to the design of dispersal mechanisms

Interactive computer graphics technology is combined with a general purpose mechanisms computer code to study the operational behavior of three guided bomb dispersal mechanism designs. These studies illustrate the use of computer graphics techniques to discover operational anomalies, to assess the effectiveness of design improvements, to reduce the time and cost of the modeling effort, and to provide the mechanism designer with a visual understanding of the physical operation of such systems.

Docking and retrieval mechanism

An engineering prototype docking and retrieval mechanism (DRM) is described which enables two spacecraft to dock and be structurally joined on-orbit. The joining of two spacecraft or payloads on-orbit supports future planned space activities such as payload servicing, deployment and retrieval, and assembly of large space systems. The DRM, as developed, provides advantages over prior approaches because it is a nonimpact docking mechanism, does not require impact absorbing mechanisms or attitude stabilization on the target spacecraft, is capable of docking to a spinning spacecraft, and can spin up and deploy a spinning spacecraft or payload.

Lubricating and wear mechanisms for a hemisphere sliding on polyimide-bonded graphite fluoride film

Friction, wear life, rider wear, and film wear for a 440 C high-temperature-stainless-steel, hemispherically tipped rider sliding against polyimide-bonded graphite fluoride films were evaluated in a moist-air atmosphere at 25 C. Optical microscope and surface profilometry observations were made at various sliding intervals to determine how film thickness affected the lubricating and failure mechanisms of the films. Two lubrication regimes operated for the same load. In the first, the film supported the load and the lubricating mechanism consisted of the shear (plastic flow) of a thin layer of the lubricant between the metallic rider and the film surface. In the second, the film did not support the load (it was worn away) and the lubricating mechanism consisted of the shear of very thin lubricant films between flat areas generated on the rider and on sandblasted metallic asperities in the film wear track. Lubricant was supplied from the valleys between the asperities or from the sides of the wear track. With thicker films, wear life increased since a greater lubricant supply was available from the sides of the wear track.

Population inversion mechanisms producing nuclear lasing in He-3-Ar, Xe, Kr, Cl, and UF6

The paper examines the lasing excitation mechanisms of present nuclear lasers, with a view to developing more efficient, higher power nuclear lasers. Particular attention is given to volumetric nuclear discharges pumped by either the He-3(n, p)H-3 reaction or the U-235F6(n, ff)FF reaction. Insight gained from these laser systems will make it possible to determine the major excitation mechanisms and then to look for new gaseous laser systems where these excitation mechanisms dominate.

Lubrication and wear mechanisms of polyimide-bonded graphite fluoride films subjected to low contact stress

The tribological properties of polyimide-bonded graphite fluoride films were studied with a pin-on-disk friction apparatus. A 440 C HT stainless steel rider with a 0.95 millimeter diameter flat area was slid against the film in order to achieve a light, closely controlled contact stress. A 1 kilogram load was applied to this flat to give a projected contact stress of 14 megapascals. Two stages of lubrication were operating. In the first stage, the film supported the load and the lubricating mechanism appeared to be the shear of a thin surface layer of the film between the rider and the bulk of the film. The second stage began after the original film was worn away, and the lubricating mechanism appeared to be the shear of very thin lubricant layers between the flat area on the rider and flat plateaus generated on the sandblasted asperities of the metallic substrate. The major difference between the lubricating mechanisms of the hemispherical and flat riders was that the flat wore through the film much more slowly than did the hemisphere.

Mechanisms to deploy the two-stage IUS from the shuttle cargo bay

The Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) is a two-stage or three-stage booster used to transport spacecraft from the space shuttle orbit to synchronous orbit or on an interplanetary trajectory. The mechanisms which were designed specifically to perform the two-stage IUS required functions while contained within the cargo bay of the space shuttle during the boost phase and while in a low Earth orbit are discussed. The requirements, configuration, and operation of the mechanisms are described, with particular emphasis on the tilt actuator and the mechanism for decoupling the actuators during boost to eliminate redundant load paths.

Manned maneuvering unit latching mechanism

The astronaut/Manned Maneuvering Unit interface, which presented a challenging set of requirements for a latching mechanism, is described. A spring loaded cam segment with variable ratio pulley release actuator was developed to meet the requirements. To preclude jamming of the mechanism, special precautions were taken such as spring loaded bearing points and careful selection of materials to resist cold welding. The mechanism successfully passed a number of tests which partially simulated orbital conditions.

Mechanical property characterization of intraply hybrid composites

An investigation of the mechanical properties of intraply hybrids made from graphite fiber/epoxy matrix hybridized with secondary S-glass or Kevlar 49 fiber composites is presented. The specimen stress-strain behavior was determined, showing that mechanical properties of intraply hybrid composites can be measured with available methods such as the ten-degree off-axis test for intralaminar shear, and conventional tests for tensile, flexure, and Izod impact properties. The results also showed that combinations of high modulus graphite/S-glass/epoxy matrix composites exist which yield intraply hybrid laminates with the best 'balanced' properties, and that the translation efficiency of mechanical properties from the constituent composites to intraply hybrids may be assessed with a simple equation.

Excitation mechanisms for the unidentified infrared emission features

Infrared and radio observations of various objects are analyzed to put observational constraints on the mechanism which gives rise to the unidentified emission features at 3.3, 3.4, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.3 microns. The results show that gas-grain collisions or fluorescence is not likely to be the excitation mechanism responsible for the observed features. Thermal emission by dust is reanalyzed and it is concluded that this mechanism can explain the emission features. A simple model in which the emission features arise in a population of small, hot, interstellar grains is constructed. These grains are very efficient radiators, and the emitting materials only need be a minor grain constituent to provide the power that is emitted in the features. The model offers, therefore, a simple explanation for the absence of these features in absorption.

ATS-6 engineering performance report. Volume:Program and systems summaries: Mechanical and thermal details

The overall mission and spacecraft systems, testing, and operations are summarized. The mechanical subsystems are reviewed, encompassing mechanical design requirements; separation and deployment mechanisms; design and performance evaluation; and the television camera reflector monitor. Thermal control and contamination are discussed in terms of thermal control subsystems, design validation, subsystems performance, the advanced flight experiment, and the quartz-crystal microbalance contamination monitor.

The design of a mechanical referencing system for the rear drum of the Longwall Shearer Coal Miner

The design of two systems which reference the position of a longwall shearer coal miner to the mine roof of the present cut and of the last cut are presented. This system is part of an automation system that will guide the rear cutting drum in such a manner that the total depth of cut remains constant even though the front drum may be following an undulating roof profile. The rear drum referencing mechanism continually monitors the distance from the mine roof to the floor for the present cut. This system provides a signal to control a constant depth of cut. The last cut follower mechanism continually monitors the distance from the mine roof of the prior cut to the cutting drum. This latter system provides a signal to minimize the step height in the roof between cuts. The dynamic response of this hydraulic-pneumatic and mechanical system is analyzed to determine accumulator size and precharge pressure.

Mechanism and models for zinc metal morphology in alkaline media

Based on experimental observations, a mechanism is presented to explain existence of the different morphologies of electrodeposited zinc in alkaline solution. The high current density dendrites appear to be due to more rapid growth on the nonbasal crystallographic planes than on the basal plane. The low current density moss apparently results from dissolution from the nonbasal planes at low cathodic voltages. Electrochemical models were sought which would produce such a phenomenon. The fundamental plating mechanism alone accounts only for different rates on different planes, not for zinc dissolution from a plane in the cathodic region. Fourteen models were explored; two models were in accord with the proposed mechanism. One involves rapid disproportionation of the zinc +1 species on the nonbasal planes. The other involves a redox reaction (corrosion) between the zinc-zincate and hydrogen-water systems.

Pre- and post-annealing of mechanical damage in silicon wafers

Basic properties of mechanical damage in silicon consisting of cracks and abrasion were studied using transmission electron microscopy. The crystallographic structure of mechanical damage was determined before and after high temperature annealing. The main findings include that stresses in silicon around crack tips are not plastically relieved at room temperature and that abrasion at room temperature introduces shear loops into the silicon. It was also found that cracks of micron size can be annealed out, specifically, if cleavage occurs on 111 planes. The healing products of such cracks are 60 deg and 90 deg dislocations. Submicron cracks transform into stacking faults during annealing. Likewise high concentrations of shear loops due abrasion were found to anneal into stacking faults. A one to one correlation between surface areas containing small cracks and stacking faults was made. Measurements of damage removal on silicon surfaces through chemical-mechanical etching techniques are presented. It is shown that silicon dioxide repolishes damaged silicon surfaces most effectively.

Fracture mechanics criteria for turbine engine hot section components

The application of several fracture mechanics data correlation parameters to predicting the crack propagation life of turbine engine hot section components was evaluated. An engine survey was conducted to determine the locations where conventional fracture mechanics approaches may not be adequate to characterize cracking behavior. Both linear and nonlinear fracture mechanics analyses of a cracked annular combustor liner configuration were performed. Isothermal and variable temperature crack propagation tests were performed on Hastelloy X combustor liner material. The crack growth data was reduced using the stress intensity factor, the strain intensity factor, the J integral, crack opening displacement, and Tomkins' model. The parameter which showed the most effectiveness in correlation high temperature and variable temperature Hastelloy X crack growth data was crack opening displacement.

Investigation of degradation mechanisms in composite matrices

Degradation mechanisms were investigated for graphite/polysulfone and graphite/epoxy laminates exposed to ultraviolet and high-energy electron radiations in vacuum up to 960 equivalent sun hours and 10 to the ninth power rads respectively. Based on GC and combined GC/MS analysis of volatile by-products evolved during irradiation, several free radical mechanisms of composite degradation were identified. The radiation resistance of different matrices was compared in terms of G values and quantum yields for gas formation. All the composite materials evaluated show high electron radiation stability and relatively low ultraviolet stability as indicated by low G values and high quantum for gas formation. Mechanical property measurements of irradiated samples did not reveal significant changes, with the possible exception of UV exposed polysulfone laminates. Hydrogen and methane were identified as the main by-products of irradiation, along with unexpectedly high levels of CO and CO2.
