Verification and Validation of PARET/ANL (V.7.6)

This report documents the software testing which has been performed for the PARET/ANL version 7.6 software. The capabilities addressed in this testing were selected based on the use of the software for analysis work under the Research and Test Reactors Department quality assurance program. The verification and validation have been performed and documented to address the steady-state capabilities of the software, as described in Chapter 2, and the transient capabilities, as described in Chapter 3. Testing based on the comparison between PARET/ANL calculations and analytical solutions, hand calculations, or another code calculations of the test cases confirms that all the identified capabilities of the software were implemented correctly.

Air Dispersion Modeling for the Idaho National Laboratory Permit to Construct P-2015.0023 Facility Emission Cap Revision Request

The U.S. Department of Energy Idaho Operations Office (DOE-ID) is seeking to modify permit to construct (PTC) P-2015.0023 issued to U S Dept. of Energy – Idaho National Laboratory (INL) on January 11, 2018 by the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). This PTC allowed the INL to become a synthetic minor source of air pollutants using a facility emission cap (FEC). Air dispersion modeling was performed as part of the permit revision application process to demonstrate that the modifications will comply with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). This report documents the modeling methodology and complete results for the air dispersion impact analysis and is supplied as an appendix to the permit revision request, Idaho National Laboratory Permit to Construct P-2015.0023 Facility Emission Cap Revision Request (DOE-ID 2020). All CAPs regulated under Section 109 of the Clean Air Act were modeled with the exception of lead (Pb) and ozone which are not required to be modeled by DEQ. Consistent with the original permit application, modeling was not performed for toxic air pollutants (TAPs) as uncontrolled emissions did not exceed screening emission levels for carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic TAPs. Acceptable model design values (concentrations) for each CAP and averaging period were summed with average background concentrations and compared to NAAQS. The results demonstrate the impacts of requested FEC limits for CAPs are less than applicable standards and demonstrate emissions up to FEC limits will not cause a violation of ambient air quality standards.

Segmented Gamma Scanner for Radioactive Waste Assessment: A User Guide

Radioactive waste assessment is important for ensuring nuclear material security at various types of facilities, such as enrichment, fuel fabrication, and reprocessing plants. The waste generated at such nuclear facilities is stored in standard containers and is required to be characterized for material-accounting purposes. The segmented gamma scanner system is a popular, nondestructive analysis measurement system used for characterizing nuclear material, including radioactive waste. This document provides guidance on how to achieve effective performance from a segmented gamma scanner system for accurately quantifying fission products, activation products, and transuranic wastes.

A key aspect of this effort involves replacing all 1,728 blast shields on the NIF, which requires specialized equipment such as the Handling Frame Assembly Table to support the production of new blast shields. This project follows a systems engineering approach that guides the design sequence. This report documents the design process from initial concept through final design, including stakeholder analysis, requirements development, conceptual design, design analysis and validation, and final design. Future work will focus on building and commissioning the system.

Evaluation of film type QX 807 (SO-368, Kodak Ektachrome MS, Estar thin base, with an equivalent Wratten 2A filter overcoat)

A color film with a sensitivity and color balance equal to SO-368, Kodak MS Ektachrome (Estar thin base) was required for use on the Apollo-Soyuz test project (ASTP). A Wratten 2A filter was required for use with the film to reduce short wavelength effects which frequently produce a blue color balance in aerial photographs. The background regarding a special emulsion which was produced with a 2A filter equivalent as an integral part of an SO-368 film manufactured by Eastman Kodak, the cost for production of the special film, and the results of a series of tests made within PTD to certify the film for ASTP use are documented. The tests conducted and documented were physical inspection, process compatibility, effective sensitivity, color balance, cross section analysis, resolution, spectral sensitivity, consistency of results, and picture sample analysis.

The Build System - Integration and management of large software avionic systems

The Build System comprises the software tools and procedures creating the flight memory load for the Space Shuttle Backup Flight System. The system has six functions: (1) configuration management, which insures that the memory load contains the proper modules, all clearly marked; (2) source translation, which translates the source code into a relocatable machine code; (3) module integration, which combines and assigns memory locations to all the object modules produced in source translation; (4) static code analysis, which verifies the integration process; (5) deliverables generation, which yields release documentation and deliverable items; and (6) release maintenance, which controls all system patches subsequent to release. Further developments will include more automation in the producing of patches from source-code updates and system requirements for tracking.

Burner liner thermal/structural load modelling

The objective of this program is to develop a thermal data transfer computer program module for the Burner Liner Thermal-Structural Load Modelling Program. This will be accomplished by reviewing existing methodologies for thermal data transfer and selecting three heat transfer codes for application in this program, evaluating the selected codes to establish criteria for developing a computer program module to transfer thermal data from the heat transfer codes to selected stress analysis codes, developing the automated thermal load transfer module, and verifying and documenting the module. The overall objectives of this thermal transfer module are that it handle independent mesh configurations, perform the transfer in an accurate and efficient fashion and that the total system be flexible for future improvements.

Extended aeroelastic analysis for helicopter rotors with prescribed hub motion and blade appended penduluum vibration absorbers

The mathematical development for the expanded capabilities of the G400 rotor aeroelastic analysis was examined. The G400PA expanded analysis simulates the dynamics of all conventional rotors, blade pendulum vibration absorbers, and the higher harmonic excitations resulting from prescribed vibratory hub motions and higher harmonic blade pitch control. The methodology for modeling the unsteady stalled airloads of two dimensional airfoils is discussed. Formulations for calculating the rotor impedance matrix appropriate to the higher harmonic blade excitations are outlined. This impedance matrix, and the associated vibratory hub loads, are the rotor dynamic characteristic elements for use in the simplified coupled rotor/fuselage vibration analysis (SIMVIB). Updates to the development of the original G400 theory, program documentation, user instructions and information are presented.
