Thrust-augmented vortex attenuation

An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the vortex attenuating effect of engine thrust. Tests were made using a 0.03-scale model of the Boeing 747 transport aircraft as a vortex generating model. A Learjet-class probe model was used to measure the vortex induced rolling moment at a scale separation distance of 1.63 km. These tests were conducted at a lift coefficient of 1.4 at a model velocity of 30.48 m/s. The data presented indicate that engine thrust is effective as a vortex attenuating device when the engines are operated at high thrust levels and are positioned to direct the high energy engine wake into the core of the vortex. The greatest thrust vortex attenuation was obtained by operating the inboard engine thrust reversers at one-quarter thrust and the outboard engines at maximum forward thrust.

Study of methods for direct optical address of integrated optical circuits

Methods for introducing optical information directly, without intervening recording and storage steps, into integrated optical data-processing devices are surveyed. The information is taken to be in the form of a one-dimensional variation of intensity across the beam. Physical phenomena that may be utilized are evaluated, and the most suitable presently known classes of materials for exploitation of each type of interaction are discussed. A variety of possible device configurations are suggested and general principles are outlined whereby many more device types can be generated. A simple experimental device was demonstrated and its operation was analyzed.

Telemetry of intracranial pressure

A completely implantable epidural pressure telemetry system designed for accurate measurement of intracranial pressure (ICP) is described. The implant device is batteryless, providing unlimited operating life. The described system uses a capacitive pressure transducer with excellent long-term stability. Once detected with the transducer and converted to a frequency with the oscillator electronics, the pressure signal is digitized. It is then telemetered without the possibility of further degradation. After detection with the small external module, the data can be retransmitted by a radio link for complete patient mobility or the energizer signal pickup module can be wired to a bedside readout unit. Continuous data are available from the system so that the dynamic ICP changes reflecting arterial blood pressure can be observed and used for diagnosis.

Satellite pattern classification using charge transfer devices

The potential uses of Charge Transfer Devices (CTDs) in pattern classification operations are explored. The needs for a hardware-based pattern classifier are established, and a matrix multiplication subsystem based upon a sum-of-products CTD is presented. Applications of the subsystem to the classification of multi-modal Gaussian distributions in general and to LANDSAT data processing in particular are discussed. Finally, the potential impact of this technology on satellite data processing methodologies is discussed.

Solid State Circuits for Cryogenic Operation

Tests confirm operation of five commercial semiconductor devices at cryogenic temperatures. The five devices - one tunnel diode, one field-effect transistor, and three CMOS integrated circuits - all perform well in circuits immersed in liquid-helium bath. For some tests, bath temperature was reduced to 1,25K by pumping.

Evaluating Energy Conversion Efficiency

Devices that convert solar radiation directly into storable chemical or electrical energy, have characteristic energy absorption spectrum; specifically, each of these devices has energy threshold. The conversion efficiency of generalized system that emcompasses all threshold devices is analyzed, resulting in family of curves for devices of various threshold energies operating at different temperatures.

The fluid mechanics of continuous flow electrophoresis in perspective

Buoyancy alters the flow in continuous flow electrophoresis chambers through the mechanism of hydrodynamic instability and, when the instability is supressed by careful cooling of the chamber boundaries, by restructuring the axial flow. The expanded roles of buoyancy follow upon adapting the size of the chamber and the electric field so as to fractionate certain sorts of cell populations. Scale-up problems, hydrodynamic stability and the altered flow fields are discussed to show how phenomena overlooked in the design and operations of narrow-gap devices take on an overwhelming importance in wide-gap chambers

A hybrid silicon membrane spatial light modulator for optical information processing

A new two dimensional, fast, analog, electrically addressable, silicon based membrane spatial light modulator (SLM) was developed for optical information processing applications. Coherent light reflected from the mirror elements is phase modulated producing an optical Fourier transform of an analog signal input to the device. The DMD architecture and operating parameters related to this application are presented. A model is developed that describes the optical Fourier transform properties of the DMD.

NASA research in teleoperation and robotics

Increased automation is necessary in future NASA missions. Drivers for automation include constrained funding and physical resources as well as mission capabilities not achievable through conventional means. The application of emerging technology in manipulators and machine intelligence will enable the development of robotic devices remotely commanded by human operators to increase man's productivity in space. The Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology (OAST) has established a program for research in teleoperation and robotics. The program's near-term focus is a Remote Orbital Servicing System (ROSS). The longer range goals include: (1) basic research in autonomous operations, (2) human factors research on the man-machine interface to remote systems, and (3) system integration and analysis of advanced concepts. This paper reviews the current NASA research and technology and considers future work needed to meet the OAST goals.

Experimental investigation of the pulsed electrothermal (PET) thruster

Burton et al. (1982) have discussed the theory of the Pulsed Electrothermal (PET) thruster, a device which in principle can operate with 70 percent efficiency at a specific impulse of 1000 seconds and higher. It is pointed out that this level of performance would be particularly attractive for orbit raising of large satellites and other near-earth missions, which cannot be easily accomplished by chemical propulsion. The present investigation is concerned with two PET thruster operating modes. A PET thruster was built and tested on a thrust stand. Exhaust velocities for polyethylene propellant vary from 20 to 27 km/sec. Single pulse specific impulse and efficiency measurements based on ablated mass show a thruster efficiency of 37-56 percent in the time range from 1000 to 1750 seconds. It is believed that an improved design with a thruster efficiency in the range from 70 to 80 percent might be possible.

Oblique focus ICCD laboratory evaluation

An oblique focus intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) was constructed and operated in a vacuum system. Special gratings were obtained and an optical system set up to try to model a candidate UV spectrometer (Milieu Interstellaire et Intergalactique-MISIG), and to produce small enough images to test the theoretical subpixel resolution capability of the ICCD system. The efforts were only partly successful. Based on the results, a similar detector was built and flown successfully on a Princeton rocket program.

Cold electronics: An overview

Generally speaking, several roles are seen for low temperatures in electronics: As a means of extracting better performance from existing technology, avoiding expense and delay required for the advances in design or fabrication which would be needed to achieve the same performance at room temperature. As a necessity in the quest for improved performance, to counteract detrimental effects which arises as technology is pushed to extremes. As an opportunity to take advantage of effects made available by low temperature operation, and to develop new devices based on them. The electronic devices and circuits considered are those based on semiconductivity. Superconductive devices and circuits are not included.

High temperature electrolyzer/fuel cell power cycle: Preliminary design considerations

A model of a high temperature electrolyzer/fuel cell, hydrogen/oxygen, thermally regenerative power cycle is developed and used to simulate system performance for varying system parameters. Initial estimates of system efficiency, weight, and volume are provided for a one KWe module assuming specific electrolyzer and fuel cell characteristics, both current and future. Specific interest is placed on examining the system responses to changes in device voltage versus current density operating curves, and the associated optimum operating ranges. The performance of a solar-powered, space based system in low earth orbit is examined in terms of the light-dark periods requiring storage. The storage design tradeoffs between thermal energy, electrical energy, and hydrogen/oxygen mass storage are examined. The current technology module is based on the 1000 C solid oxide electrolyzer cell and the alkaline fuel cell. The Future Technology system examines benefits involved with developing a 1800K electrolyzer operating with an advanced fuel cell.

Separation of cells from the rat anterior pituitary gland

Various techniques for separating the hormone-producing cell types from the rat anterior pituitary gland are examined. The purity, viability, and responsiveness of the separated cells depend on the physiological state of the donor, the tissue dissociation procedures, the staining technique used for identification of cell type, and the cell separation technique. The chamber-gradient setup and operation, the characteristics of the gradient materials, and the separated cell analysis of velocity sedimentation techniques (in particular Staput and Celsep) are described. Consideration is given to the various types of materials used in density gradient centrifugation and the operation of a gradient generating device. The use of electrophoresis to separate rat pituitary cells is discussed.

Photovoltaic-Driven Multiple-Quantum-Well Modulator

Proposed high-performance spatial light modulator consists of multiple-quantum-well, strain-layer superlattice similar to one described in accompanying article, "Strain-Layer-Superlattice Light Modulator" (NPO-16915). Device differs from other one, operates in transmission rather than in resonant reflection and therefore includes only one stack of GaAs/InAs layers having total thickness less than penetration depth (1 to 2 micrometer) of optical modulating signal. Alternating, semitransparent semiconductor layers contain space-charge barriers forming quantum wells. Modulating light (with photon energy greater than semiconductor band gap) induces photovoltaic action, which affects transmission of modulated light (having photon energy less than band gap).
