Solar electric propulsion breadboard thrust subsystem test results.

Work providing a firm basis for building an engineering model thrust subsystem (TSS) is described. A 1500-hr functional demonstration test revealed the impact of each element on TSS integration, operation, and future development. The primary conclusions are: accurate and specific definition of interfaces is essential to a timely system integration program. In addition to normal operating requirements, this definition must include requirements for preflight checkout, self-protection of all interfaces, capability expansion, failure modes, maximum input power, interelement power losses, noise and transient sensitivity and production, packaging for vacuum, thermal control, electrical grounding, cabling, mounting, and handling. In any future design, each phase of the TSS operation (startup, throttling, switching, etc.) should be considered in detail to anticipate and account for possible in-flight variations in element characteristics and performance.

Variable load indicator

Weighing device measures loads as a function of its elongation. Device is compact, simple, and inexpensive. It does not require presetting and will measure any load from zero to its yield point. Because of its low cost relative to other load indicators such as strain gauges, device can be used as turnbuckle for tensioning straps, rods, or cables where accurate preloading is critical.

Emergency-escape device

Relatively simple inexpensive device uses reeled steel cable, is controlled by automotive-type shock absorber, and allows safe descent from burning building. Device is cheap to manufacture and assemble and requires neither skill, special knowledge, or athletic ability to operate. It is reliable and fireproof and can be deployed instantly.

Means for mapping radiated fields and for measuring differential movement of antenna elements

Null seeking system uses two transponders located at selected points on dish to detect phase-front of received signal. One signal line has continuously variable phase shifter driven by reversible stepmotor. Each of two transponders on dish is a dipole with mixer crystal between elements. Crystal is driven, in turn, by 181.6MHz signal carried by miniature coaxial cable.

RF shielded connectors

Gap, where cable joins connector housing, is shielded effectively by composite RF shielding made from suitable potting resin material (fumed silica, thixotropic prepolymer composition), conductive coating (silver-filled, flexible, polyurethane resin), and protective jacket (wax coated housing formed around another wax form having contours shaped to match configuration).

Satellite networks for education

Satellite based educational networking is discussed with particular attention given to the potential uses of communications satellites to help meet educational needs in the United states. Four major subject areas were covered; (1) characteristics and structure of networks, (2) definition of pressures within educational establishment that provide motivation for various types of networks, (3) examination of current educational networking status for educational radio and television, instructional television fixed services, inter- and intra-state educational communication networks, computer networks, and cable television for education, and (4) identification of possible satellite based educational telecommunication services and three alternatives for implementing educational satellite systems.

Smoke Plume Analysis Using Fan-beam and Single-beam Radiometers

Smoke plume data were taken using the stacks of the Mills Road Steam Plant on Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama. The fan-beam unit was placed approximately 235 meters east of the Mills Road Steam Plant, and the single-beam unit was placed approximately 80 meters north of the fan-beam unit. Results of the smoke plume measurements indicate that the smoke plume is a periodic process near the mouth of the smokestack. The usefulness of the system is limited because of inaccurate and cumbersome positioning methods and base line constraints due to cable length. It is recommended that the radiometers be mounted on pedestals which have both azimuth and elevation positions determined by digitally controlled stepper drive motors. It is also recommended that a time multiplex system be used to transmit data from the radiometers to the electronics van.

Evaluation of an aeroelastic model technique for predicting airplane buffet loads

A wind-tunnel technique which makes use of a dynamically scaled aeroelastic model to predict full-scale airplane buffet loads during buffet boundary penetration is evaluated. A 1/8-scale flutter model of a fighter airplane with remotely controllable variable-sweep wings and trimming surfaces was used for the evaluation. The model was flown on a cable-mount system which permitted high lift forces comparable to those in maneuvering flight. Bending moments and accelerations due to buffet were measured on the flutter model and compared with those measured on the full-scale airplane in an independent flight buffet research study. It is concluded that the technique can provide valuable information on airplane buffet load characteristics not available from any other source except flight test.

Manufacturing and quality control of FCC harnesses

The Saturn 5 program contractors encountered many technological challenges and problems relative to inter-connecting wiring and cabling during the development stages of the Saturn program. The knowledge gained from solving these problems, plus recently developed state-of-the-art techniques, materials, and processes were documented in a report prepared for NASA/MSFC. The portions of that report which deal with FCC harnesses are presented.

Transition splices and cost comparison

The development and testing of two designs of transition splices are reported. The design goal was to produce splice terminations that are electrically insulated to withstand the environmental conditions of commercial aircraft and are capable of being repaired and reworked on installed cables with the use of hand tools. In addition, a cost study comparison of FCC vs. RCC is reported. The comparison was made on a basis of 10 aircraft with each vehicle using approximately 100,000 feet of wiring and 2,000 connectors. The results are tabulated for seven different wiring configurations.

Stability analysis and trend study of a balloon tethered in a wind, with experimental comparisons

A stability analysis and trend study for a balloon tethered in a steady wind are presented. The linearized, stability-derivative type analysis includes balloon aerodynamics, buoyancy, mass (including apparent mass), and static forces resulting from the tether cable. The analysis has been applied to a balloon 7.64 m in length, and the results are compared with those from tow tests of this balloon. This comparison shows that the analysis gives reasonable predictions for the damping, frequencies, modes of motion, and stability boundaries exhibited by the balloon. A trend study for the 7.64-m balloon was made to illustrate how the stability boundaries are affected by changes in individual stability parameters. The trends indicated in this study may also be applicable to many other tethered-balloon systems.
