A low-scale flavon model with a $ {\mathrm{\mathbb{Z}}}_N$ symmetry

We propose a model that explains the fermion mass hierarchy by the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism with a discrete $ {\mathrm{\mathbb{Z}}}_N^F $ symmetry. As a concrete model, we study a super-symmetric model with a single flavon coupled to the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model. Flavon develops a TeV scale vacuum expectation value for realizing flavor hierarchy, an appropriate μ -term and the electroweak scale, hence the model has a low cutoff scale. We demonstrate how the flavon is successfully stabilized together with the Higgs bosons in the model. The discrete flavor symmetry $ {\mathrm{\mathbb{Z}}}_N^F $ controls not only the Standard Model fermion masses, but also the Higgs potential and a mass of the Higgsino which is a good candidate for dark matter. The hierarchy in the Higgs-flavon sector is determined in order to make the model anomaly-free and realize a stable electroweak vacuum. We show that this model can explain the fermion mass hierarchy, realistic Higgs-flavon potential and thermally produced dark matter at the same time. We discuss flavor violating processes induced by the light flavon which would be detected in future experiments.

Fiducial $q_T$ resummation of color-singlet processes at N$^3$LL+NNLO

We present a framework for $q_T$ resummation at N 3 LL+NNLO accuracy for arbitrary color-singlet processes based on a factorization theorem in SCET. Our implementation CuTe-MCFM is fully differential in the Born kinematics and matches to large-$q_T$ fixed-order predictions at relative order $α^2_s$. It provides an efficient way to estimate uncertainties from fixed-order truncation, resummation, and parton distribution functions. In addition to W ± , Z and H production, also the diboson processes $\gamma\gamma$, Z$\gamma$, ZH and W ± H are available, including decays. We discuss and exemplify the framework with several direct comparisons to experimental measurements as well as inclusive benchmark results. In particular, we present novel results for $\gamma\gamma$ and Z$\gamma\gamma$ at N 3 LL+NNLO and discuss in detail the power corrections induced by photon isolation requirements.

Transverse momentum resummation at N$^{3}$LL+NNLO for diboson processes

Diboson processes are one of the most accessible and stringent probes of the electroweak gauge structure of the Standard Model at the LHC. They will be probed at the percent level at the high-luminosity LHC, challenging current theory predictions. We present transverse momentum resummed calculations at N$^{3}$LL+NNLO for the processes ZZ, WZ, WH and ZH, compare our predictions with most recent LHC data and present predictions at 13.6 TeV including theory uncertainty estimates. For W$^{+}$W$^{−}$ production we further present jet-veto resummed results at N$^{3}$LL$_{p}$+NNLO. Our calculations will be made publicly available in the upcoming MCFM release and allow future analyses to take advantage of improved predictions.

The O(N) S-matrix monolith

We consider the scattering matrices of massive quantum field theories with no bound states and a global O(N) symmetry in two spacetime dimensions. In particular we explore the space of two-to-two S-matrices of particles of mass m transforming in the vector representation as restricted by the general conditions of unitarity, crossing, analyticity and O(N) symmetry. We found a rich structure in that space by using convex maximization and in particular its convex dual minimization problem. At the boundary of the allowed space special geometric points such as vertices were found to correspond to integrable models. The dual convex minimization problem provides a novel and useful approach to the problem allowing, for example, to prove that generically the S-matrices so obtained saturate unitarity and, insome cases, that they are at vertices of the allowed space.

Finite N indices and the giant graviton expansion

The superconformal index of N = 4 super-Yang Mills theory with U(N) gauge group can be written as a matrix integral over the gauge group. Recently, Murthy demonstrated that this integral can be reexpressed as a sum of terms corresponding to a giant graviton expansion of the index, and provided an explicit formula for the case of a single giant graviton. Here we give similar explicit formulae for an arbitrary number, m ≥ 1, of giant gravitons. We provide 1/2 and 1/16 BPS index examples up to the order where three giant gravitons contribute and demonstrate that the expansion of the matrix integral differs from the giant graviton expansion computed in the supergravity dual. This shows that the giant graviton expansion is not necessarily unique once two or more giant gravitons start appearing.

Loop equation and exact soft anomalous dimension in $ \mathcal{N} $ = 4 super Yang-Mills

BPS Wilson loops in supersymmetric gauge theories have been the subjects of active research since they are often amenable to exact computation. So far most of the studies have focused on loops that do not intersect. In this paper, we derive exact results for intersecting 1/8 BPS Wilson loops in $ \mathcal{N} $ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, using a combination of supersymmetric localization and the loop equation in 2d gauge theory. The result is given by a novel matrix-model-like representation which couples multiple contour integrals and a Gaussian matrix model. We evaluate the integral at large N, and make contact with the string worldsheet description at strong coupling. As an application of our results, we compute exactly a small-angle limit (and more generally near-BPS limits) of the cross anomalous dimension which governs the UV divergence of intersecting Wilson lines. The same quantity describes the soft anomalous dimension of scattering amplitudes of W-bosons in the Coulomb branch.

Toward an effective CFT 2 from $ \mathcal{N} $ = 4 super Yang-Mills and aspects of Hawking radiation

Using $ \mathcal{N} $ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory we recover important aspects of the near-extremal thermodynamics of AdS 5 black holes including both the outer and the inner horizons with their corresponding entropy and energy. This $ \mathcal{N} $ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory approach to black hole thermodynamics leads to an effective CFT 2 interpretation similar to the work by Callan and Maldacena. We corroborate this effective CFT 2 by implementing a particular near-horizon limit that geometrizes the Virasoro algebras as asymptotic symmetries. Using the effective CFT 2 picture, we discuss aspects of the Hawking radiation rate for a region of the near-extremal AdS 5 black hole quantum evolution.

TMD fragmentation functions at N 3 LO

We compute the unpolarized quark and gluon transverse-momentum dependent fragmentation functions (TMDFFs) at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N 3 LO) in perturbative QCD. The calculation is based on a relation between the TMDFF and the limit of the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross section where all final-state radiation becomes collinear to the detected hadron. The required cross section is obtained by analytically continuing our recent computation of the Drell-Yan and Higgs boson production cross section at N 3 LO expanded around the limit of all final-state radiation becoming collinear to one of the initial states. Our results agree with a recent independent calculation by Luo et al.

\( \mathcal{N} \) = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills thermodynamics to order λ 2

We calculate the resummed perturbative free energy of \( \mathcal{N} \) = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills in four spacetime dimensions (SYM 4 , 4 ) through second order in the ’t Hooft coupling λ at finite temperature and zero chemical potential. Our final result is ultraviolet finite and all infrared divergences generated at three-loop level are canceled by summing over SYM 4 , 4 ring diagrams. Non-analytic terms at \( \mathcal{O} \) ( λ 3 / 2 ) and \( \mathcal{O} \) ( λ 2 log λ ) are generated by dressing the A 0 and scalar propagators. The gauge-field Debye mass m D and the scalar thermal mass M D are determined from their corresponding finite-temperature self-energies. Based on this, we obtain the three-loop thermodynamic functions of SYM 4 , 4 to \( \mathcal{O} \) ( λ 2 ). We compare our final result with prior results obtained in the weak- and strong-coupling limits and construct a generalized Padé approximant that interpolates between the weak-coupling result and the large- N c strong-coupling result. Our results suggest that the \( \mathcal{O} \) ( λ 2 ) weak-coupling result for the scaled entropy density is a quantitatively reliable approximation to the scaled entropy density for 0 ≤ λ ≲ 2.

One-loop central-emission vertex for two gluons in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 super Yang-Mills theory

A necessary ingredient for extending the BFKL equation to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy is the one-loop central emission vertex (CEV) for two gluons which are not strongly ordered in rapidity. Here we consider the one-loop six-gluon amplitude in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory in a central next-to-multi-Regge kinematic (NMRK) limit, we show that its dispersive part factorises in terms of the two-gluon CEV, and we use it to extract the one-loop two-gluon CEV for any helicity configuration within this theory. This is a component of the two-gluon CEV in QCD. Although computed in the NMRK limit, both the colour structure and the kinematic dependence of the two-gluon CEV capture much of the complexity of the six-gluon amplitudes in general kinematics. In fact, the transcendental functions of the latter can be conveniently written in terms of impact factors, trajectories, single-emission CEVs and a remainder, which is a function of the conformally invariant cross ratios which characterise the six-gluon amplitudes in planar $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM. Finally, as expected, in the MRK limit the two-gluon CEV neatly factorises in terms of two single-emission CEVs.

Holography from lattice $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 super Yang-Mills

In this paper we use lattice simulation to study four dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. We have focused on the three color theory on lattices of size 12 4 and for ’t Hooft couplings up to λ = 40.0. Our lattice action is based on a discretization of the Marcus or GL twist of $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM and retains one exact supersymmetry for non-zero lattice spacing. We show that lattice theory exists in a single non-Abelian Coulomb phase for all ’t Hooft couplings. Furthermore the static potential we obtain from correlators of Polyakov lines is in good agreement with that obtained from holography — specifically the potential has a Coulombic form with a coefficent that varies as the square root of the ’t Hooft coupling.

Open giant magnons suspended between dual giant gravitons in $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 SYM

We study classical solutions to the Nambu-Goto string onAdS 2 × S 1 and AdS 3 × S 1 corresponding to strings stretched between wrapped branes extending in AdS. The solutions are obtained by analytic continuation of giant magnon solutions, cut at the position of the branes. These solutions carry one or two SO(2 , 4) charges and a single SO(6) charge. We compute their energies and show their relation to $$ \frac{1}{2} $$ 1 2 -BPS geometries. Their relevance to the SL(2) sector of $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 SYM is also discussed.

Two-loop HTL-resummed thermodynamics for $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

We compute the two-loop hard-thermal-loop (HTL) resummed thermodynamic potential for \( \mathcal{N} \) = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM). Our final result is manifestly gauge-invariant and was renormalized using only simple vacuum energy, gluon mass, scalar mass, and quark mass counter terms. The HTL mass parameters m D , M D , and m q are then determined self-consistently using a variational prescription which results in a set of coupled gap equations. Based on this, we obtain the two-loop HTL-resummed thermodynamic functions of \( \mathcal{N} \) = 4 SYM. We compare our final result with known results obtained in the weak- and strong-coupling limits. We also compare to previously obtained approximately self-consistent HTL resummations and Padé approximants. We find that the two-loop HTL resummed results for the scaled entropy density is a quantitatively reliable approximation to the scaled entropy density for 0 ≤ λ ≲ 2 and is in agreement with previous approximately self-consistent HTL resummation results for λ ≲ 6.

Vertex algebra of extended operators in 4d N=2 superconformal field theories. Part I

Abstract We construct a class of extended operators in the cohomology of a pair of twisted Schur supercharges of 4d$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N =2 SCFTs. The extended operators are constructed from the local operators in this cohomology — the Schur operators — by a version of topological descent. They are line, surface, and domain wall world volume integrals of certain super descendants of Schur operators. Their world volumes extend in directions transverse to a spatial plane in Minkowski space-time. As operators in the cohomology of these twisted Schur supercharges, their correlators are (locally) meromorphic functions only of the positions where they intersect this plane. This implies the extended operators enlarge the vertex operator algebra of the Schur operators. We illustrate this enlarged vertex algebra by computing some extended-operator product expansions within a subalgebra of it for the free hypermultiplet SCFT.

Splitting interfaces in 4d $ \mathcal{N} $ = 4 SYM

We discuss entanglement entropies in 4d interface CFTs based on 4d $ \mathcal{N} $ = 4 SYM coupled to 3d $ \mathcal{N}$ = 4 degrees of freedom localized on an interface. Focusing on the entanglement between the two half spaces to either side of the interface, we show that applying the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription in general leads to multiple natural entangle- ment entropies. We interpret the different entropies as corresponding to different ways of assigning the 3d degrees of freedom localized on the interface to the two half spaces. We contrast these findings with recent discussions of universal relations for entanglement entropies in 2d interface CFTs and formulate generalized relations for 4d interface CFTs which incorporate our results.

D-Band EPR and ENDOR Spectroscopy of 15 N-Labeled Photosystem I

For billions of years, nature has optimized the photosynthetic machinery that converts light energy into chemical energy. Key primary reactions of photosynthesis occur in large membrane protein-cofactor complexes. The light-induced sequential electron transfer reactions occur through a chain of donor/acceptor cofactors embedded in the protein matrix resulting in a long-lived transmembrane charge-separated state. EPR is the method of choice to study electron transfer and the interaction of protein environment with redox-active cofactors. However, the spectra of organic cofactor radicals typically are not fully resolved and severely overlap at conventional X-band EPR. Even at Q-band EPR, this overlap is present and often a serious problem. As a result, there is a large variation of the reported EPR data and limited understanding of electronic structures of several redox-active cofactors. These serious problems can often be overcome by the excellent spectral resolution provided by high-frequency EPR (HF EPR). In this work, we study the electronic structure of the primary electron donor P 700 and the secondary electron acceptor A 1 of Photosystem I (PSI) using 130 GHz (D-band) EPR and Electron-Nuclear-Double-Resonance (ENDOR) spectroscopy. PSI was isotopically labeled with 15 N (I = $\frac{1/2}$) to avoid quadrupolar interactions in the most abundant nitrogen isotope 14 N (I = 1) and simplify the ENDOR spectra. ENDOR spectroscopy is central for determining the hyperfine coupling of nitrogen atoms of the two chlorophyll molecules comprising oxidized P 700 and the involvement of protein nitrogen atoms with reduced A 1 . While HF ENDOR of A 1 - allows identification of two nitrogen atoms, HF ENDOR of P 700 + still does not permit unique assignment of the recorded hyperfine couplings.

Neutronic Performance of a Compact 10 MWe Nuclear Reactor with Low Enrichment (ThxU1−x)N Fuel

Abstract Recent interest in compact nuclear reactors for applications in space or in remote locations drives innovation in nuclear fuel design, especially non-oxide ceramic nuclear fuels. This work details neutronic modeling designed to support the development of a new nuclear fuel concept based on a mixture of thorium and uranium nitride. A Monte Carlo N-Particle Version 6.2 (MCNP-6) model of a compact 10 MWe reactor design which incorporates (Th x U 1− x )N fuel is presented. In this context, a “compact” reactor is a completely assembled reactor which may be emptied of coolant and transported by specialized commercial vehicle, deployed by a C130J aircraft, or launched into space. Core geometry, reflector barrels, and the heat exchange zones are designed to support reduction of overall reactor volume of core components while maintaining criticality with a fixed total fuel mass of 4500 kg. Dense mixed nitrides of thorium nitride (ThN) additions in uranium nitride (UN) in 5 wt.% increments between $$0.05 \le x \le 0.5$$ 0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.5 have been considered for calculation of $$k_{\infty }$$ k ∞ and $$k_{{{\text{effective}}}}$$ k effective . ThN additions in UN results in a slight increase in the magnitude of the temperature coefficient of reactivity, which is negative by design. The isotopic distribution of the principal actinide inventory as a function of burnup, time, and initial fuel composition is presented and discussed within the context of the proliferation risk of this core design.

The exact discontinuity of a partial wave along the left-hand cut and the exact N∕D method in non-relativistic scattering

We first deduce the analytical continuation in the complex planes of the initial and final three-momenta of the Lippmann–Schwinger equation in coupled or uncoupled partial-wave amplitudes. This result allows us to deduce a master equation whose solution is the exact discontinuity of the on-shell partial-wave amplitudes along the left-hand cut. This equation is always a linear non-singular integral equation whose solution is fixed exclusively by the knowledge of the potential, applicable to either regular or singular potentials. The capability of calculating exactly this discontinuity allows one to settle the exact N∕D method in two-body non-relativistic scattering for coupled and uncoupled waves. We exemplify this new advance in scattering theory by explicitly checking the agreement between the Lippmann–Schwinger equation with the corresponding solutions of the exact N∕D method for some examples that involve regular and singular potentials, either attractive or repulsive.
